I remember the first time I listened to your book, I was so upset with do the dishes. But it's true. The real answer is to do the thing regularly. I'm still grieving the life I dreamed of where cleaning just happened by itself because I genuinely thought it did for those 'tidy people'

Yes!!! This has been my experience too! I have yet to make the dishes a daily habit. I know it’s the answer, but I don’t usually make it more than 3 days in a row. Everyday is the goal!

I too got irritated with do the dishes but it works. At 77 yrs old i still wish my mother was here to clean the house. She is 100 yr old I asked sister when I visted if I should dust ma's house. She said dust wouldn't dare go into ma's house.

@@Chantelle456 decluttering the kitchen to only what we need also helped me a lot. We simply do not have enough crockery to go more than a day (two at a push).

    • @Chantelle456

@@Elspm I actually did that! We only had one set of dishes per person. The problem was I would resort to using paper product or eating out of measuring cups 😂 I just brought back in a few dishes to get us through one full day before I have to wash. Going to see if doing them just once a day will help me not feel like I’m constantly doing the dishes after every meal.

I can tell you as a professional cleaner that you do NOT want one! The glass sliding doors are the absolute worst to clean and so time consuming shuffling those doors back n forth, not to mention all the bathing products that get splashed on the door. They will literally only look clean right after you clean it and then the second you turn that water on...poof..all your hard work down the drain. The fixed doors aren't as bad if your shower head isn't too close to glass but I try to warn anyone considering them to not do it bc they will never remain clean. Some even have to keep squeegee in shower but that doesn't really help with the water spots after it dries, and who wants to think about squeegee after showering and trying to get ready. If I ever buy a house and see any glass in shower it will be the first thing I remove even if I have to rip it out myself..lol I blame HGTV for that utterly ridiculous trend.

I know you never make the claim nor "advertise" this (at least not in your videos), but your cleaning style is the saving grace of ADHD people everywhere. It's not that your advice is a "cure" for Executive Dysfunction issues of course, but it has been incredibly helpful to simply acknowledge the fact that my approach to cleaning is fundamentally different than the average person - and that is OKAY. There *is* a style that can work for me. You taught me that. Thank you!

Dana, as much as your 5-step process has changed my life-and it has-the heart of what I've learned from you is stop with the magical thinking. Magical thinking is actually what got my house into so much trouble to begin with. Stopping magical thinking was a very hard thing to do, but has been the most "impactful" thing in getting my house in order and KEEPING it in order. I wasted a lot of time thinking magic was the key and I needed to find the magic-but the "magic" was in doing the work.

You are absolutely right!! There is no magic trick🪄. Along the same note…I have a fiberglass tub/shower with a curtain. Here’s my “trick”: wipe down your “already clean” shower every time you shower with the towel you just used (I don’t reuse towels). Works so perfectly!! And, I also try to get my shower right before my husband so he can do it. 🤣. I also used to get the plastic/vinyl liners and just throw away. Now I get the fabric liners & wash with my towels and just hang it back up to dry in the shower. Works like a charm! This is coming from a confirmed slob who’s trying to do better & find systems that work for me!! Thanks so much, Dana!!! You’ve helped me so much!😘❤️

Probably the most disappointed I’ve been in any RUclips ever…
Shower screens are the standard in the country where I live. The myths and broken promises as to how to keep them clean fill a very, very long aisle at the store.
A genuine tip born of observing my mother: grow old. The older she gets, the less she doe and the less mess she makes, plus she qualifies for more hours of home care - and the cleaner her house becomes.
And the dishes? The best thing to come out of a very low calorie diet is the stunning reduction in dirty dishes.
Time to face facts: I am domestically doomed.

I'm so glad that I watched this video today. I love your wisdom. I was listening to a flylady "crisis clean" video while I cleaned a couple of days ago. I was reminded of things she said so long ago that I had forgotten that resonate with what you've said here. When I started the "swish and swipe" habit (daily swish the toilet and swipe the rims and sink), my bathroom sink and toilet were never messy. She has said to always fill the kitchen sink with hot soapy water whenever you enter the kitchen. What a good habit! Hearing you say that the only way to never have a pile of dirty dishes is to do the dishes. I really needed to hear that. I love how you two probably accidentally say the same things. Both wise women. Her idea of using an ostrich feather duster works great, but only if you've cleaned and used your furniture polish or other cleaner to get the grime off first. Like the squeegee example, the magic of the ostrich feather only works on cleaned surfaces to keep the daily dust away and then, it stays clean. She does say, though, to do a load of laundry a day. So you differ on that. I get your reasoning, which is a very good reason, too. I'm glad you have differed from that because it helps so much. As I said before, this has been such a helpful video for me. You are the greatest Dana.
Sorry for so long. I do have a QUESTION: (capitalized so you'll see it 😊): Do you have a good suggestion for a daily tip of keeping a shower curtain clean? I mean, it can't really respond well to a squeegee.

    • @katie7748
      @katie7748 День назад +1

Don't leave it all smooshed to one side. Close the curtain 3/4ths so it can "breathe." Less mold/mildew that way.
Get a fabric curtain and liner. Wash curtain as needed. Wash liner as needed. In our house it's every 3-6mo for the curtain and about once a month for the liner to keep them both looking nice.

This is why I'll do a 1hr weekly cleaning blitz of our apartment as follows:
      1. Put a load of laundry in (45min eco cycle).
      2. Bleach the toilet + bathroom and kitchen sinks.
      3. Spray any antibacterial cleaners / use disinfectants.
      4. I'll use that 10min dwell time to handwash the dishes.
      5. Wipe all the antibacterial/disinfectant cleaners down (I use Dettol multipurpose, so I don't have to rinse! Read the bottle directions).
      6. I then have 30mins to speed dust and vacuum. (Not moving furniture, and surfaces are already pretty clear).
      7. Then the laundry will be finished so I'll hang it up to dry.
      8. By this time the bleach has had about 1hr to work, so I'll scrub & flush/rinse all the bleach.
I deliberately DON'T stop, coz of "Autistic Inertia". Likewise, "never go empty handed" & "1min rule" are vital to have things put where they belong and clear surfaces to clean quickly. I can't just leave things til later / make it Tomorrow Me's problem.

Ms. Dana, as a fellow Texas who has relocated to Florida, I can give you a tip on the shower and the squeegee. It's great as a maintenance object. What I found to work vest, regardless of well water, hard or soft water...Rainex makes a product line for the shower glass. The aerosol version literally allows the water to roll off the glass in the same manner as the car window treatment. There is an entire line, yet the aerosol version although I am not a fan of the VOCs, I am more not a fan of the manual labor to clean the water and soap scum. My home in Texas was 5K sq ft and I shared it four male family members. The squeegee has been retired. Honestly, I am a fan of form, fit and function in all areas of life and working smarter versus harder.

@@r.a.fraley1616 This is reassuring. My husband is still functionally asleep until at least an hour after he showers, so getting him to wipe down the shower (or even step onto the mat instead of the floor when he gets out so there aren't any puddles!) is an exercise in futility most weekdays. So if it works at 50% wiping, I'll take it!

The other important thing to remember is that a big once-in-awhile cleaning of your shower door, for example, is not only a huge amount of work, but it's never going to look as pristine as when you keep it from getting cruddy and stained in the first place. There could be scratches, and areas that are not as shiny, etc.

I have an older vacuum that I keep in the garage and use it for the pool area. Of course I only use it when the pool area is dry, but it’s so much faster and easier than a broom or a shop vac.

I also use a squeegee and a microfiber cloth in glass shower doors. It’s been clean for years. My biggest trick is consistently dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning. Then it’s never a big deal.

I have a curtain too as my shower is over the bath. I've had it about 10 years now - I just pop it in the washing machine with some bleach every couple of years to freshen it up.
We have incredibly hard water here, so a glass screen would be a lot of work, and I don't see myself squeegeeing one every time - like Dana said there isn't a time saving trick as such other than cleaning it every time.
I know HOW to clean a glass screen that got gross (acid), but do I want to? Nope 😂

The real 'trick' is to do the work of maintaining! No magic in it. It's not fun or sexy but it's worth it to no longer have to deal with 'recovery'. And now I need to go change out my shower curtain. It's been on my to-do list. I just worked out and am yucky so I will change the curtain and scrub the shower to maintain, then enjoy a pristine shower to clean up.

Next upgrade on the pool area cleaning: try a leaf blower instead of sweeping or shop vac'ing! Much less labor intensive... but there is a learning curve to make sure you don't blow dirt and debris *into* the pool. Keeping your back to the water works, just make sure you don't accidentally back up into the pool! 😅💦

I know the point of this video is not specifically about squeegees, but I’ve got to say….. I think the problem with big ones is that it doesn’t have the same amount of pressure all along the blade. I found using 2 hands works well, one to hold the handle and the other to put extra pressure on one end of the blade. If you’re doing 2 swipes anyway, hopefully it will help putting extra pressure on opposite ends for the 2 swipes. (Disclaimer: I’ve only used this technique on windows which don’t swing open, I’ve not tried it on a shower door…. Please don’t push too hard and fall out of your shower!)

lol. My husband and I do that every single time too. Nope, hard water means I still have to clean it on top of squeegee 😡. I hate hard water. We don’t have anywhere to add a water softener.
Oh! I just heard you have hard water too. Then I have to see what I’m still doing wrong.
Now that I think about it it’s always worse around the handle. Gotta think smarter about this 🤔

CLR has a product called Brilliant Bath that works like bandits on major glass shower door build up. it does an amazing job on even caked on hard water stains. only bad thing is it a strong smelling a bit of a harsh product. I know some ppl dont like that stuff but sometimes you have to bring in the heavy duty stuff to get thru those water stains and gunk build up. I can't believe how quick it works and how clear the glass looks after i use it. It does leave behind a smell but it doesnt take that long to dissipate. there are tons of other less harsher products and methods out there but that stuff is the fastest and left the best finish out of all the products and methods Ive tried, which is A LOT.

squeegee tips: The angle of the rubber "blade" matters where it hits the glass. The angle of the handle of your squeegee will determine how you have to hold the handle in order to have that rubber blade contact with the glass at a good angle. And SOAP. soap will make the water wetter. it will squeegee right off. Maybe trputting a little soap soapy water on glass. The second pass with the squeegee will be mostly on the dry glass you just did on the first pass! That will make second pass feel sticky or unglidey. lol. If you are determined to make it work.. check out window washing vids that show how to do a waterfall style of squeegee pass so that you don't lift off the glass til the end. one pass. good luck. long time viewer.
