Making Custom Battery Tray On The XS400

- Making a custom battery tray for the Yamaha XS400 build! This item was an important piece of the puzzle and having it done means fabrication is nearly complete on this build. I like to utilize the space under the swingarm to mount batteries for a clean look that is still relatively easy to access.
I made this tray from 11 individual pieces:
- Bottom tube is 1" diameter
- Ends are machined and tapped for M10x1.25 threads
- Vertical plate is 3/16" steel
- Bent bar is 1/4" diameter round bar
- Strap tabs and side tabs are 14G steel
- The strap is a generic Amazon battery strap

In before "But the mudghads!?" 😉 Seriously though I hope everyone enjoys these build videos. If there is one takeaway with these things it's that they don't need to be viewed as "bike specific" as the ideas can be used on anything. I often get comments asking for specific videos on specific bikes where the information is already covered in other videos I have made. Just know this information applies to nearly any bike. Happy building!
I'm always in awe of your fabricating skills BJ!
Thanks Jeff
Great job on the battery holder........be careful in the floods.......
I'll try to avoid anything over 3 feet deep! Thats when I say no
awesome use of space! it's going to make the frame look so clean when youre done
Thank ya! I feel its an underused area
I see you are going for the clean look on this one.....keeping the engine and exhaust as the point of focus. Me gusta 👌. Nice work
100%
Your bike, your build, your solutions, full support from me
🤘🤘
Nicely done! Learning the of hand is critical. Takes time, but being able to do most processes proficiently (wrenching, welding, cutting ect) both paws will allow you to
change it up enough to last thru a working life. I switched most tasks to my left about 40, I'm 60 now and have both hands good most times. Also injury will force this on most
who wrench and fab. Airplanes for the $ and bikes/cars for fun!
I do Enjoy the build videos!!
Glad you have enjoyed!
Nice piece of fabrication BJ very neat
Thank ya!
Piece of art.
Thank ya
Beautiful job man, congrats!
Thank ya!
Nicest XS400 build I've seen. They were so forgettable from the factory.
Well thank you. I've yet to even ride one so I hope its decent!
For small parts I use a very small drill vice to hold the parts. I drilled and tapped the body of the vice and threaded a stud into it for my work lead clamp. I also machine inserts for an almost press fit so one side does not lift up when tacking the opposite side. No tig finger hold down needed. Cool project
Thanks for watching
I love Rust Oleum, the primer, a big can of that, slathered on with a brush. Then some color, usually flat black or sometimes high gloss black. (and then a pint of the primer in a quart of waist oil and a quart of diesel fuel with maybe some minwax stain amazing for the outside wood finish project. The Rust Oleum primer holds it all together. No bugs on the fence. ever.). And so.... Oh yea. No rust for me. Just saying. Your student, always, Steve from New Hampshire.
Love it! Looks like a giant belt buckle. 👍
Sort of!
Floods ! Underwater biking. 🤣🤣🤣. Nice tidy job. A cover over the battery terminals might be necessary , though I guess you have thought of that already .
Floods indeed! The battery has boots included
Great work Mr BHB, and equipment
Thanks Jim
Brilliant! Love watching you work.
🙏🙏
I am just about to buy a TIG welder, picked up a couple of welding tips right there 😂 Well done job, very enjoyable video 👍
A TIG is definitely nice to have for the detail stuff. This could be made with a MIG for sure but cleanup would take longer. Glad you enjoyed though!
I like that bench top bandsaw you have!👍
It's awesome. I made the platform so you can use it vertically
I'm not a welder at all but these cool projects are inspiring!
Glad you have enjoyed them!
Nice work!
Thank ya much!
Nice work BJ your welds are mint buddy I’ve watched you weld quite a lot now and to have self taught yourself is amazing, laughed when you touched the rod and gave that look ,lol it said it all hahaha doing a cracking job mate take care and all the best to you 🔧🔧🔧👍👌🏍️🏍️🏁🏁❤️
Oh yeah striking an arc on accident while looking at it is my favorite lol 😆
@@BrickHouseBuilds hahaha😂😂
Wonderful job!!!👍I think I'll steal your idea for relocating the battery of the cafe racer I'm building!😉
🤘🤘
Great video done that. Glad you are picky
Thank you!
Looks great. One of one design.
Thanks Andy!
Buen trabajo, nice job
Thank you!
Great job brother
Thank you!
You did it wrong. (just kidding 😁😁) I like the design. Pretty cool. Custom designed and made is the way to go.
Master class - great job BJ
Thank ya sir!
Nice job BJ, can't wait to see what comes next. 🎉
Thank ya!

🤘🤘
Awsome cool looking bike
Much appreciated!
Clever man.
🤘🤘
Came out great. Man I need to get a tig so much nicer welds
Thanks! A TIG is definitely nice to have for things like this
As a former California resident, I'm not too worried about people stealing my motorcycle batteries anymore (Not that it ever happened, apparently they liked heavy boat tanks more). Lol
Nice work! But, forgive me,I'm old school, and I worry aboot the protection of the battery and electronics from road debris and wet roads. Please consider a fender extension/mud guards. Regards from Canada 🇨🇦 😊
Not riding on wet roads full of debris though lol
@@BrickHouseBuilds never say never, my friend! 😃
❤
🙏
Floods that translates into i am not riding my bike😁
Yeah at that point I take the canoe to work!
😎👍😎.

Wire wool on a drill bit! Why didn't I think of that?
Probably has potential to dull the bit but still handy!
@@BrickHouseBuilds Drill bits are plentiful. Old honda suspension parts are not.
@@montgomerybusch-pigg2722 truth!!
Hi, you obviously don't share Colin Chapman's philosophy: "Simplify, then add lightness”. This battery box is anything but lighter than the original.
I do actually and have a Porsche build underway with that line of thought as the main focus. This bike is not along that line of thought. The goals are different with more a visual goal rather than being the lightest or best performing. Thanks for watching

@@BrickHouseBuilds: I have actually been following this series since Day 1!
"We have weather reports."
Well said. If it is a pavement only bike there is no worry.
"What if you are riding in a nuclear apocalypse?" Sheesh.
I probably should have considered the nuclear apocalypses as those are bi-monthly on my way to work
You can do better 😮
