People don't realize this Pasadena fire is majority working-class people. They see the Palisades fire has celebrity homes and beachfront property, but this is small businesses, families that have been there for decades, renters, etc. So sad :(
I am convinced, because of independent content like this, there will almost be zero market for legacy media. They simply can't compete with the army of independent content creators and journalists.
I've been saying that lately too, in 10 to 15 years once Gen A hits the spending demographic, It will be a fool's errand to spend major advertising on any type of legacy media source such as cable television, network broadcasting. Although current laws require network broadcating per the FCC, I think those regulations will be lifted, those laws were enacted prior to the worldwide communications infrastructure that we have today. With streaming platforms like Netflix and prime video now taking sports broadcasts and the legacy news media now losing mass numbers of viewership to social media, its an inevitably at this point.
That's why they want to ban these apps and hinder RUclipsrs. Very sad. This is where I get all my news now. I wish the mainstream would get on board but they are run by greed and misinforming us.
25:06 my sister and brother-in-laws house. His childhood home. On my 60th birthday. My emotions are indescribable. Lots of memorable moments at this address. I'm glad they got out safely. I'm praying for all that are impacted. Thanks for the insight from Georgia.
Dang and you're in GA, hope you weren't too impacted by the hurricanes in 2024. Wishing you and your family have a better 2025 and I'm sorry for your BILs loss of both his homes :( Only way left to go is up for y'all!! 🧡

But gifts and Patreon you support RUclips (Google) almost half the amount of money donated? Is this correct and where can you find it because taking that much is not a fee but Criminal. RUclips Red Blood Money. And I like I found a glitch in youtube's flight against add blocks that if you watch a 20 min video you get normally at the beginning 2-3 times in the middle and the end adds. You have to pay a big amount of money to get add-free and with adblock they made your videos unwatchable till impossible. However with some knowledge I watch hours on hours youtube without 1 single add. Only what the youtuber you watch itself is selling something and that I directly skip it. How to become successfull without zero knowledge or just 250 investment goes automatically to thousands in a month or stupid products. I then just dislike the video because I judge the video on its content and 1,5 minute of someone trying to sell a subscription service. Thank you for taking the chances and driving through these disaster fire areas. My heart goes out to the people of the LA area. The sad part is we’re expecting more high SA winds this coming week. Here’s a little something to get a cold drink after your ride. You deserve it!! Take care!!

As a midwesterner, this is hands down the best and most real account of the fires that I have seen, and it's so much worse than we have seen on the news. Can't even imagine what these folks are going through.
After only two days, this video has almost 6,000,000 views. This seriously gives the entire world an almost in-person view. It's also more info that the media won't or can't even give. Thank you for your world service 🙏🏽

Thank you for showing the world the level of this destruction. Cannot really understand from the POV of the news station helicopters. Seeing these people walking around their remnants of a home hits our hearts. Sending love from the east coast US♡♡
You’re donating to someone who’s taking advantage of the disasters for monetary gain and going into a place they don’t need to be at to cause more traffic and cruise around like it’s a game? They need to leave people alone and stop exploiting people’s misfortunes. It’s one thing to report, it’s another to carelessly drive up to a decimated home where you could potentially injure yourself or others. This is no better than mainstream.
Dude, you rode through my childhood neighborhood! Thank you for the eye-witness reporting - I live out east now. I was just there, however over Christmas, walking all around those streets - I almost saw my parent's house! Luckily, it's still standing, but my friends' houses are not. You happened to stop right in front of one of them - where the speed sign was about the middle of the video. Thank you for doing this - it's good to be able to have some notion of what is happening on the ground. What a tragedy! My heart goes out to all of those neighbors who are dealing with this grief. I pray for healing and the opportunity to rebuild and that the neighborhood is able to pull together.
Wow, at 15:10 you can see Bishop's fire truck. I pass by their station when I travel to Mammoth. Crazy to see that it's driven 300 miles to help fight the fires.
Thank you for giving us this POV during this horrible tragedy. Also shout out to all of the firemen police officers personnel. I’ve read stories that some people haven’t slept since Tuesday. It’s now Friday. Stay safe to everyone there and God bless.
I did the exact opposite today. One side of the US is on fire, and the other side is frozen. Went on a bike ride in 9 degree weather and about a foot and a half worth of snow everywhere except the roads. Can surely say I'd much rather do a snow ride versus this hell. Props on you for getting out there.
I know what you mean. I’m on the east and the wind is freezing and the gusts would blow a small dog away. It really is a world of ice and fire right now. I don’t know how to explain it with the right words.
There seems to be a 50-mile forcefield around my house in my pretty-northern state where there is just no snow. My area only has a mere inch and just barely freezing temperatures. The south of my state has had a week of snowdays, while I have had not even a 2-hour delay
@T00_SHADY, I live in Southeast Kentucky. Despite the fact that we have not yet gotten nearly as much snow in my area, you described the general situation perfectly. Stay safe. Teri Woolum LeFevers.
This video is destined to be a vital part of the public record-history-of these devastating fires. Great footage enriched by your personal in-the-moment reactions and the brief conversations you held with other people in Pasadena. A family member of mine fled a nearby neighborhood that we were sure would burn; thankfully her home has been spared (so far) but so many, many others weren’t so fortunate. Thank you for braving the smoke to give us this sobering view of tragedy.
🇬🇧Watching this from Manchester UK. This is just unfathomable to us here in England so thanks for showing us the true scale of this catastrophe and my heart goes out to everyone affected by these fires. Be safe on that bike my man, great job. 😢
It's an area of devastation, where is the news interest in showing the destruction of peoples lives? We lost our house in the 2019/2020 Black Summer fires in Canberra, locals were ready to punch on with journalists for filming them at their lowest. This is not journalism, it is disaster porn.
thats not a good job or journalism, its desaster tourism. and instead of risking your life AND others, you better should help and not cause risky situations for firemen
@@tbb1985 he didn't even bother any fire men and the houses he are passing are already burnt to a crisp they have no risk, the only risk for him is his lungs from the smoke
Thanks! I just came across your channel today and this is the first video I’ve seen from you! So impressed with your bravery and content looking at everything you’ve done. Rewatched this and definitely agree, you deserve a coffee/tea or two for this. Thanks so much. You set the bar crazy high for everyone else out there especially regular media coverage that would never think or be brave enough to report in such a way. Keep doing your thing! Thanks from the rest of us!❤
I just dropped a video of the fire department saying on open air that the mayor wants LA to burn. The mayor wants the fire damage to rise to $29,000,000 in damages. Insane and unbelievable.
This kind of citizen journalism is really something you can't get anywhere else. Thank you for your service here. Sorry you had to experience this and my heart goes out to everyone impacted.
Found your channel all by off chance. I live in Denmark, but got friends in Cali. It's not only distressing, I've been crying seeing this. All I can think about the work classes and less fortunate that is now without a home, let alone may not even have the finances to rebuild. My heart goes out to all of you out. Thank you John for reporting on this. I hope it can make people rally together for those in Cali. Stay safe. I will have all of you in my prayers.
I keep thinking as well of the people who worked at all these businesses that have burned to the ground, they have no job to go to now and the people who own these small businesses also now have no income. This whole event is affecting so many people on so many different levels, it truly is devastating and unimaginable. I can’t imagine the amount of people who are going to be dealing with PTSD from this.
I swear it's something you see outta a disaster movie, but it's legit really happening. I thought the whole "unknown drones" situation was strange & scary enough, but this is even worse.😶
I couldn't afford to be poor in LA. The median income is $180,000+. You can't buy a house for under a million. They'll be fine. 11 people so far have died. That's who I feel bad for. The people who lost their lives and their families. Material possessions can be replaced.
People living near foothills and mountains are in a panic. Lots of people are either NOT prepping or have left the state , or Insist on staying put until the last chance 🤯 Although.... We are waiting for the winds to finish by next week 😅 that's out only hope.
I was born in that exact neighboorhood back in 1968, our address was E Woodbury 1167. At the end of the video, when you're riding south on Lake Av., you're just reaching the corner of E Woodbury, where there is a large Catholic Church (luckily still standing). I only lived there for 1 year, then moved away to Europe, but I visited the neigbourhood several times as a grown-up. Now, watching this from Germany, it touches me deep down to see it so utterly destroyed. I want to express my compassion and wish for everyone to stay safe.
Mainstream news protects the leaders, independent reporters protect the voiceless. Keep it up all you independent journalists. We want and need you for truth.
Watching from Australia where we have our own experience with bushfire. My heart goes out to everyone affected by these horrendous fires.Thank you so much for sharing this video. As you said the news reports don't give a full scale of this disaster but your ride through does. Best wishes to you and everyone in LA.
A lot of people are gripping about mainstream media not covering this. That simply is not true. They just aren’t showing it on RUclips or Instagram. I have subscriptions to Washington Post, NYT, AP, and the Houston Chronicle. They are all covering it. So are all the major networks. Local stations that are big enough are sending crews. Firefighters are coming as well. The only problem is they can’t bring their apparatus (firefighter speak for fire engines and fire trucks). They can’t leave their own jurisdictions without coverage. I live in Houston where we had two storms within weeks and power lines, including huge transmission towers. I got extremely and my daughter made reservations for us on South Padre Island so we didn’t have to sit in the dark with hot, humid weather. On the way down, we saw electrical trucks from all over heading to Houston. The same thing happens in any huge emergency. With the snowstorms, crews from places that didn’t get much snow are going to places where there is too much snow. In EVERY disaster, the looters come out to take what little people have left, or go into houses where everyone has evacuated and take what they can sell. That is why the National Guard has been called. Looters have Mo respect for anything.
Oh my gosh, it’s all every channel has on here. There’s plenty of on the ground reporting I actually thought the reporters were a bit crazy to be so close, just as I I think this gentleman is. 😊
The scariest part is this isn't over. I live in a town next to Alta Dena. The fire is actively climbing the mountains, which is the path it usually takes to get to my town. We are still at extreme risk.
Way better than traditional news station. And with army of content creators as long as they don’t censor, we get to see what’s really happening on the ground. Thank you John.
Exactly. Citizen journalism is the present and future. In recent disasters it has become really clear. Lahaina.. North Carolina. On the ground journalism is where it's at. Raw. Uncensored.

Hey, just a piece of knowledge that my dad gave me: When around smoke or fires, use a woodworking mask. They’re white and go around your face, and usually have a little box in the front. The disposable ones are much much better at keeping out the dust than a regular medical mask. I’ve used one while the air was filled with sawdust it’s amazing how much it filters out.

Watching from the UK. Thanks for bringing this to us, it's how journalism should be. It's very hard to imagine what it's like from a cold England, we are getting reports on TV but nothing brings the reality of it quite like your footage. I feel utterly devastated for everyone caught up in this horror.
@D__H damn straight. I'm from the uk, and I can't understand why the USA doesn't build houses to be strong. Especially with the extrememe weather they have over there. It's sad, and I feel bad for them right now..
@toast4736 I think they don't use brick as they're also in an earthquake zone and falling masonry causes more injuries/casualties. Wood is more flexible. So I guess it's a choice between a rock and a hard place, literally.
@toast4736 different parts of the world require different standards. Better off building with wood considering they need to be flexible for earthquakes and it's less devastating when hurricanes and tornadoes roll around sucking up debris.
I have to be honest man, this video is not what I thought it was going to be. It's a lot better than what I actually thought. Very good coverage John, its hard to explain what it does to you looking at the devastation, completelywiping out a familys home, and someone like you living with fires will have experienced it before. The time I had first hand experience was in Australia living with my Aunt, & Uncle, he took me to where a wildlife had passed through 2 days earlier and I was not prepared at all for what I seen, scenes just like this which brought out emotions I'd not experienced before and something I will never forget.
🙏 God Bless the first responders - LAFD, OCFA, everyone doing the best they can. Under resourced, lacking supplies and personnel from insane budget cuts, no water in the fire hydrants to fight the fires - this is truly unacceptable and should be criminally negligent. Absolutely devastating.
@@Ghost_of_a_Flea There have not been budget cuts to the fire depts, they have had increases over the last 4 years. Also the lack of water was due to the 15 hours of continuous drain on the tanks and the pressure was too low to continue to push water to elevations. People saying they ran out of water are spreading false information. Just takes a quick google search and multiple outlets explain exactly what happened.

I am convinced, because of independent content like this, there will almost be zero market for legacy media. They simply can't compete with the army of independent content creators and journalists.
They won't be around much longer. 🎉

I did the exact opposite today. One side of the US is on fire, and the other side is frozen. There seems to be a 50-mile forcefield around my house in my pretty-northern state where there is just no snow. My area only has a mere inch and just barely freezing temperatures. The south of my state has had a week of snowdays, while I have had not even a 2-hour delay

Same words I was thinking as I also am in Australia
The scariest part is this isn't over. I live in a town next to Alta Dena. The fire is actively climbing the mountains, which is the path it usually takes to get to my town. We are still at extreme risk.
I was watching the Topanga Peak camera feed last night. In a 15 minute time lapse, I watched the fire crawl up the mountain. It was scary fast.

Hey, just a piece of knowledge that my dad gave me:
When around smoke or fires, use a woodworking mask. They’re white and go around your face, and usually have a little box in the front. The disposable ones are much much better at keeping out the dust than a regular medical mask. I’ve used one while the air was filled with sawdust it’s amazing how much it filters out.
Better than nothing but he needs a proper mask. Need to protect against particulates as well as volatile compounds e.g. formaldehyde.
Well fit-tested N95 particulate filter mask.
@@kxjx Nothing is probably better. Surgical masks give a false sense of safety while filtering absolutely nothing.

I concur. Be safe, fellow ⚜️'en.. ❤🙏🏽
It is written in the Quran, the word of God, that He said:
(Would any of you like to have a garden of palm trees and grapevines, beneath which rivers flow, for him therein of all kinds of fruits, and old age afflicts him while he has weak offspring, and then a whirlwind in which is fire strikes it and it is burned? Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may give thought ) . [Al-Baqara : 266]
A hurricane made of fire...that is powerfully put. It gives me chills and I think you should use it often. The commonalities between fire and water and what we are here and with Katrina...you should make a video about your Katrina survival and what we see here. The devastation, trauma, questions of rebuilding...you had a wildfire made of Hurricane.

@@LeighPhillips78i went through Katrina also and if you look it up there’s so much bs that the media makes up to make it sound like they gave us so much help. The jail flooded and the inmates were still there while the gaurds left. Every inmate after Katrina settled turned up missing, you and me both know what happened
if you go again, go north of altadena drive on lake ave and the houses above it. my street, rubio st and holliston was completely decimated. it’s surreal. within 10 hours, a house we had for 42 years of memories just vanished
I am so sorry. From Va.
So sorry :(
That's so sad, my thoughts are with you all down there
Prayers
So sorry for your loss. Fires suck, I lost much in 2020 but it gets easier with time, as long as everyone is safe. Sending prayers and good vibes.
9:43 dude with the wind sound in the background and the reddish sun made this a really a inhumane vibe just to look at. Just imagine what the people living hera gone trough and everyone else in La
As an Aussie very used to bushfires, my heart goes out to the people of LA. Amazing, heartbreaking footage- you really captured the scale of destruction that even the air shots could not convey.
Stay safe.
Maybe Trump invited the fire.
Fate responded to Trump's word and hell broke out in Los Angeles
From Canada please take care L.A our hearts and prayers go out to you all
Thank you for your kind words ❤.
Thank you for your kind words ❤.
This is bad . same destruction happened in Jasper Alberta Canada. 1/3 of the homes that were burnt to the ground. Much compassion from your northern neighbours.
❤❤❤
New construction is untouched..... gas lines fueling the fire... Duke energy?
What company regulates the gas lines in this line of fire?
You stay safe and watch your back at all times and Thank You for your videos! I use to work in LA a few years ago. 😮
John Hicks is World Famous now - he reported live in the LA Fire, you have very good commentary - good job!
What’s real sad is the insurance companies will find every way not to pay their customers. Yet the rest of the country will find themselves watching a bowl game starting with the title of said insurance companies not to mention the millions spent on advertising. That’s the real discussion we should all be talking about.
It'll never change / Just like getting rid of the federal reserve
Yup.
"Line go up!"
Are you suggesting that the people who have been paying for coverage year after year should matter more than shareholders?
Ha! You funny...
you are right, unfortunately it will take things like this to wake people up
Bombs... booms... sounds like another gas lines explosions. Need a federal, state investigation
I've done work as a Wildland Firefighter and you're right about that smoldering Root causing Bigger fires.
It takes entire Teams to scout through the rubble and find every one of those smoldering hot spots and put them out
Jeez I hope they fix it
Do you guys use things like thermal cameras to find em?
we can go to mars and spend billions on war but cant control fire, how pathetic r we
@@eliasnyc1Mother Nature is more powerful than you will ever be able to comprehend.
@loganchapman105 no no, that's small fire, one guy on CNN said it's worse than 3rd world country they got no water and I believe him, house on fire that could def be put down by firefighters but they just standin there
Great reporting sad that this is going on at all, you really do a better job than the news media. Thank you for sharing and stay safe, this is series sadness.
Mind your lungs homie building materials in the air are not good for you !!
He needs to be wearing a better mask than what he has on. That one's not protecting him.
I was just thinking that. Building materials and much much more. I'll bet that smoke is extremely toxic compared to forest fire smoke. Every one of those houses contains very toxic chemicals you don't want to smoke like lithium ion batteries and cleaning chemicals and all kinds of plastics and other synthetic materials.
I'll bet burnt car smoke is really toxic. All those petrochemicals, plastics, electronics etc.
are you saying that the air in california is deemed to cause cancer by the state of california?
Glad to see other people calling it out, dudes playing ruskie roulette with all those carcinogens
Thanks for posting this. I’m from Pasadena. It’s really sad 😢😢
my sisters go to college around pasadena and im worried for them. theyre safe and not going to college currently..i havent heard any further news on the pasadena fire and dont know if its near their college or not.
Same I'm from Altadena/ Pasadena and to see everything gone like that really breaks my heart .. I grew up on Harriet and glen ave and Washington fairoaks like all that is my stomping grounds it's just really really sad .. praying for you and your family whoever who was affected by this ❤ ..

You mentioned how you were going to remember this for the rest of your life. I'm 61 years old. I was 6yo when a fire erupted in the hills and neighborhoods above our home in Claremont CA. I distinctly remember hearing an explosion in middle of night and seeing flames to the north. Next day I remember my dad and brothers on roof spraying water on the shake roof. I also remember watching the slurry bombers dropping retardant seemingly right up the road. Pretty surreal for a 6yo, but I thought it was cool. Your footage is unbelievable. Watching you zip down the diff roads and seeing the devastation sent shivers up my spine. You probably need a better mask/goggles next time you go out. Peace out brother. Subbed.
Thanks for the video, and providing some unbiased, clear account on what's going on. These people have my deepest sympathies over what's happening. To whatever extent it's nature or something else, we should stand united and not be divided by any bad actors. Sending love from Thailand. Stay safe brother.
Crazy and just 15-20 miles down in the South Bay, we're just chilling and shopping at the malls like nothing. Thank you showing us the devastation and the reality check.
CA is suffering so bad it seems the govt has nothing to do with it. My sister got into USC in 2001 at that time this place was great.
The Chimneys being the only things left standing in all the houses that burnt down is just eerie
It's because the US builds houses out of wood and cardboard. Which burns to the ground. All that is left is exactly what they should use for building. It's not like the US doesn't have clay and cement to make bricks and stuff.
@@ganimedero California is in a major earthquake zone. European brick construction is not built for the amount of quakes you get in the ring of fire.
On much of the east coast you get the opposite problem. The hurricanes, and tornados are so strong, that brickwork turns into lethal projectiles.
@@Rill_1 quakes can be solved with smart foundations. Solutions exist, the will to use them, less. And yes these are old homes, which don't have these. But these should be lessons learned.
Steel bar reinforced breeze blocks are good for earthquake zones.

Great coverage better than any news station I’ve seen we share the same last name. Keep up the good work.
Im from germany, and im just completely devastated by how much people have lost all of their belongings, places where they feel home and just what they have worked for their entire lifes! I wish everyone much strenght and stay safe ❤🙏 Thanks for sharing this with us!

You literally are showing more and giving more information than any news network out there! I agree with what several of these guys are saying on here. There is just simply no room for legacy media anymore. I mean, I was wondering if maybe the news was hyping this whole fire up but this is serious. I mean, it is awful and you proved it and you showed it to us. Thank you for your work man.

Thank you John for reporting and sharing how dangerous the situation is. This is what RUclips is for.
My dad's strike team was protecting the Getty Villa. He got discharged home due to an eye injury from all the smoke and debris. He's fine now, thank God. I wish everyone up there the best. The firefighters, LEO agencies, news crews, civilians, everyone.
Your dad's a hero
I just went through Hurricane Helene in the mountains west of Asheville NC, but this is really heartbreaking. I'm just SO sorry for everyone that can't easily replace what they're losing. And nowadays that's MOST of us.😢🙏🏼
This is the time of the choosing. Thank you Jonathan.
I'm so sorry for everyone going through these catastrophic events.
Here in the Uk we had a Headline "LA WILDFIRES" with a couple of photos.
Your video (randomly entered my feed) was an inspiring view of horror and disaster that folks in Europe dont understand!
You have this going on in the West and at the same time a Polar vortex covering the East in feet of snow and freezing conditions.
And only 10 weeks after the hurricane down south.
Keep safe.
They literally glossed over the ongoing disaster in North Carolina, East Tennessee and Virginia. The scale of that disaster is beyond comprehension.
The world is definitely changing its wild how bad these disasters are getting!

The house you passed by around the end was for my first wife and kids. Beautiful home just in rubbles. I wanted to move back there after retiring but now its just memories.
Damn.
my condolences.
Also my condolences
Lots of misinformation floating about.
@@Horace1993 what misinformation do you mean
@@Ghost_of_a_Flea There have not been budget cuts to the fire depts, they have had increases over the last 4 years. Also the lack of water was due to the 15 hours of continuous drain on the tanks and the pressure was too low to continue to push water to elevations. People saying they ran out of water are spreading false information. Just takes a quick google search and multiple outlets explain exactly what happened.

Try humanism instead
Watched through. Apocalypse is the best way to put the situation. Thanks for showing us around Pasadena

Thank you so much for taking the risk to bring this video to us. For your own good, you need a completely different mask to even get close to filtering what is in the air. At the very least, a half face piece style with dual replaceable filters.
Stay safe out there, John and everyone in Cali.
