ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Indeed, who's Marty McFly? I only know Calvin Klein and Clint Eastwood.
#at4w #BackToTheFuture
Robert Zemeckis has thr film rights to Back to the Future and has literally said "over my dead body" when it comes to reboots and sequels
I'm very cool with that.
@@vernsherris6779
Worst timeline.
Yeah I’m grateful he has the rights 😅
Problem is one day they will die.
Look how many people have said they won’t allow one of their books or whatever to be made into a film again like Roald Dahl and P.L Travers but once they die the family or estate allow it.
It’s also possible that one day a studio will just throw so much money at them they’d be stupid to turn it down
Studio: “We can wait~”
So, the big reason why Back To The Future has never had any sort of legacy sequel is because the Bobs (Zemeckis and Gale) have been fiercely protective of the trilogy on a filmic basis, with one of them even saying it will likely be in their will that no further movies be made, as they do retain quite a bit of the franchise’s creative control. That being said, I also suspect it has a lot to do with Michael J. Fox’s physical health, as the rise of these legacy films has coincided with the worsening of his Parkinson’s symptoms.
And if people REALLY want a sequel, there's the Telltale game.
How about a sequel but it's actually a parody and stars Rick and Morty?
@@CMWatersyeah that is so fun!❤
@@CMWatersor the 90s cartoon
Hasn't stopped Zemeckis from staining his own cinematic legacy in the last few years...
IIRC, part of the joke in Back to the Future was that if you could actually get a Delorean up to 88mph on level ground, it would probably become a time machine all on its own. The car had a notoriously unreliable an under-powered engine.
They dubbed a Porsche engine sound over it to make it sound faster
Wrong. The engine was only under powered in the American market. They put a heavily restrict catalytic converter on the us market cars which had only 130bhp in the "federal spec" also lost about 40 foot pounds of torque, the UK / euro spec cars had 163bhp and the extra torque as standard.
Having driven multiples of both it's significant in not just enjoyment, how the 262c engine also revs without the cat is significantly transformative. It works out as 105bhp per ton to 131bhp per ton.
It's certainly not late 70s Lotus Esprit sadly, as the stainless cladded panels add 180kg of extra weight to it.
One of the benefits of growing up in Northern Ireland, these cars, like the Titanic and Bushmills whiskey are hammered into you as part of your culture.
@@RobsonRoverRepairWell, perhaps it was a joke about the DeLoreans available on the American market, then. Back To The Future does take place in America.
@@adamdavis1648 Yeah I'd heard the director joked that getting a DeLorean to go at 88 mph was about as impossible as time travel and it was a joke about the unreliability of the American version of the car.
@@allanolley4874 And i guess the reason Doc used a delorean, was becaus ehe heard the same joke, and thought "challenge accepted"
23:46 Doc Brown being a Time Lord is interesting. Fun Fact, Doc Brown met the Twelfth Doctor in the trailer for Lego Dimensions, in which they call each other Doctor.
All Doctors up to 12 are in the game so Brown could meet any of them.
I can’t see it myself one is a Time Travelling Doctor who has a close friend called Clara they will have nothing in common
Eh!
And I'm positive The Doctor mentioned BttF at least once on the show.
Honestly, the Back To The Future trilogy is a storyline that can continuously make the audience think about how time travel works, or what happens to one timeline when it’s changed or a new one is created. Marty constantly questioning what happened to the Marty from the new timeline he now lives in, or what happened to Marty in the timeline he used to live in. It’s something that not only creates an interesting story, but also keeps the audience talking about the ramifications of time travel or how it could go for you or another version of you. Truly something that can make you think.
In that regard, The theory of Time-Travel is constantly Evolving over the years
@@joe95883I hope this guy didn’t just walk into a store and buy plutonium
The reason why Back To The Future hasn't been remade or rebooted is because Robert Zemeckis the Director or the Trilogy has said that'll never happen as long as he lives. Which of course the cynical part of me thinks Universal is waiting with baited breath for him to die.
I think Stephen Hillenburg have the same attitude when it comes to Spongebob. After his death, a spinoff and a prequel was greenlit.
@@animefan25 which irioincally are all tecnically prequals since the movie is cannonically the last adventure
@@animefan25 And Nick pretty much plays reruns of SpongeBob all day, every day. He needs Nick's permission to die.
Tom Holland said he was actually approached a few years ago by an undisclosed producer about portraying Marty McFly in a reboot of this marvelous franchise. They really are waiting to Zemeckis and Gale to get their first tickets into the cemetery so they can put their filthy hands stain these perfect movies!
I never played the Telltale game, but I hear it felt like a Back to the Future 4 in a lot of ways. Bob Gale even came back to help write the plot. I'm curious if the comics acknowledge that at all or if that's a split in the timeline as well.
Apparently, the comics did wind up adapting that plot as "Citizen Brown".
Heck, the Telltale game could be considered Part 4 and 5 with how it's done, with Episodes 1 and 2 being enough for Part 4, with Episodes 3-5 being Part 5.
The Telltale game has a really fun sequel story, but as a game itself it's mediocre, not like other Telltale games where the player's choices can drastically change the plot.
The game is still fun to play, the newly introduced characters are nicely written and interesting, the returning characters feel like their film counterparts - A.J. Locascio does a great young Michael J. Fox impersonation, and Fox himself makes a cameo in the final episode, even Claudia Wells returns as Jennifer for a couple episodes, my favourite character has to be Doc though.
Christopher Lloyd is great as always, you also have 17-year-old Emmett Brown (voiced by James Arnold Taylor, he does a great job sounding like a teenage Doc), the character is really well-written, I enjoy his story arc perhaps more now than I did when I first played the game 13 years ago. Emmett's story arc is also consistent with the themes of the films, without feeling like a complete rehash. If you spend time exploring the game, asking every character every available question, observing every object, you'll find some nice little easter eggs and even some minor character details.
The game is fantastic, the story was great and Bob Gale basically said that it was best to see it as like an other universe story.
@@repulser93 I read the Citizen Brown comics a while ago and I remember not liking them very much. It seems like they tried to cram the game plot into books that were too short, so the story became a lot more rushed and jolted.
There's a visual novel called Zero Time Dilemma which touches upon the same dilemma Marty has in this comic. In fact, a character blatantly references Back to the Future and posits something of a similar idea to what Marty has - that when he travelled back in time, he instead swapped places with a Marty from a different timeline, meaning that timeline's Marty is stuck in another one with no clue how he got there. Highly recommend that game and the whole Zero Escape series
I actually watched a Let's Play of that game a couple months ago. Very interesting premise and mystery, though some of the discussion on philosophy and probability theory made my head hurt. 😅
Even though Viga had to step away I still think J-Maner is doing a really good job with the artwork
Why’d she step away?
@repulser93 there's a note in the description explaining it.
Agreed
Yup
Congrats to Viga for the big commission btw.
You know what would have been an interesting resolution to this story? If Marty, using "futuristic" technology, went back in time and silently watched his own childhood from a distance, learning what happened to himself thirdhand.
To a movie that isn't practical at all but to a comic, this could definitely work for a few pages.
"Easy, Doc, you're channeling Sylvester McCoy from the review I'll be doing in November!"
God am I glad the world didn't glitch and change, considering your release schedule.
The Ancient Egypt joke done in a Doc Brown voice. That made my morning.
Glad you tackled this comic even if it was just a Patreon request. Maybe you can check out the Transformers crossover?
About why there's no reboot or nostalgia-baiting sequels: Bob Gale, one of the creators, has been stopping them! It was written into his and Robert Zemeckis' contracts that anything new involving the property MUST go through them.
This Back to the Future comic was cool and made me want to check out the rest of the series. Still, I consider Telltale's Back to the Future video game the only true continuation of the original series. While the gameplay wasn't great (and this was before The Walking Dead), the story was good and kept you invested episode to episode, the time travel was a lot of fun and fit with the spirit of the movies, and it had a lot of great world building and character development, especially for Doc Brown. It's honestly a really good love letter and epilogue to the movies and I highly recommend it, even if the game is dated by today's standards.
That line near the end about unlicensed nuclear reactors now invites me to imagine a world where both franchises exist. The amount of hijinx and story ideas from both concepts interacting is insane.
I'm kind of surprised this is the first time we've ever talked about Back to the Future it's amazing trilogy of films everyone should see and the comics for what they tried to do did their job mostly well while still telling new and interesting stories in the process what's not to love
I think the Telltale Games Back to the Future is the closest thing we'll get to a fourth movie.
16:17 "GREAT SCOTT MARTY ANCIENT EGYPT!"
"Whoa this is heavy Doc."
Been awhile since he used that meme
@@TheInkPitOx Indeed.
It's interesting because part 6 of Jojo's Bizzare Adventure deals with these issues near the end too. Thier answer was that the memories of people can be different but your soul is still the same. Also, the main villain gets erased from existence thus making every action he's even done not happen. Alot of this review and Marty's dilemmas just made me think of these points while watching.
Sadly Araki will never bother explaining or exploring jack shit about it... Hell, there's no confirmation that Pucci is inexistent in that universe.
The unfairly maligned JORGE novel though explores that question. Kudos to Maijo...
There was technically a Back to the Future 4, but that was just the name of an episode of Spin City where Christopher Lloyd guest-starred.
There is also the video game
As great as this review of one of my all time favorite franchises was, I have to say the last line of the episode made me literally bounce up and down for a second. I've been eagerly awaiting Amalgam Comics Month literally all year. Time to grab the popcorn and cola!
Never heard of it before. BUT I decided to look it up on Wikipedia. And now I'm also excited for it.
I may be a relatively new viewer of AT4W, but, God, have I missed the Ancient Egypt gag.
You know he forgot to mention that they’re turning the first back to the future movie into a Broadway musical.
Macy’s highlighted this months later
My theory has always been that eventually the change in time would catch up to Marty, just like it did before, and effectively his memory of the past would be what it was.
Luckily, his trip to the past wasn't an intentional attempt to change history, so in both timelines he still would have gone back in time, so it still all works out.
Hitting the like button at 88 MPH with 1.21 gigawatts of power! BTTF is one of my favourite movies and this comic run was awesome.
I see Marty got advice from Dr. Gregory House again
Jumping Gigawatts! Linkara talking about a Back to the Future comic is the best way to cap off a good night. It's one of my favorite film trilogies.
'Marty, I'm going to tell you something a college associate once told me. Sometimes science is mor art than science. ...it was the seventies Marty.'
It's a shame you can't play it because of copyright, but I think the Back to the Future theme song has to be one of the best in film history.
31:41 Nice AT4W/BTTF mashup outro, Lewis and ZeroRyoko999.
15:48 That's early 1986, so still firmly within the mid-1980s range.
29:59 They made the best video of 1987.
6:30 well Marty also looks exactly like his ancestor Shamus so it wouldn’t be too surprising Marty looks like that. Plus George only knew “Kelvin Klein” for a week and hasn’t seen his face in 30 years
The idea of Doc Brown going through time travel stories and him getting hooked on Chrono Trigger and many Zelda games.
Side note Chrono Trigger's Epoch still my fav time machine.
The TARDIS, the Epoch and Doc Brown's DeLorean are my top 3 favorite time machines.
@@KevinTheTimeGeek86 Sadly the tardis is just one I could never like. Now the Hyper Zector that's my second fav right before Doc's DeLorean
@ProfessM Might I ask why you're not a fan of the TARDIS?
@@KevinTheTimeGeek86 On top of who not holding my attention, it just feels too much. Time, space travel, bigger on the inside and it used to cloak. But mostly cause who not even Linkara's reviews could keep my attention.
@@ProfessM Ah, okay. That's fair. I personally love it because of the contrast of an ordinary police box on the outside, followed by some extraordinary alien wonderment on the inside. But I guess that's not for everyone, and I respect that.
Using robots in a “Back to the future” story reminded me of the How should have it ended video they did about the first movie, that was a crossover with Terminator. 😂
Oh, hey, I remember that yarn ball theory video! It was actually pretty insightful. It's interesting how popular understanding of time travel went from a single, fixed timeline a la BTTF, to time loops like Bill and Ted, and for now settled on Multiverse theory like Avengers Endgame. Multiverse is the most stable of the three, even if it loses the dramatic opportunity of single timeline paradoxes or clever planning of a time loop. But one thing about it that always bothered me is how it violated the conservation of energy. Specifically, how an entire universe's worth of energy comes out of nowhere whenever someone time travels. A pre-existing time loop (like I believe your yarn ball theory implied) solves this problem by pre-establishing that those other universes were always there.
"Don't put the internet in your brain."
Dr. Quease from Ninja Turtles The Next Mutation is proof of why such a thing is a bad idea.
My personal headcanon/theory is that the Marty from the first timeline, T-A, replaces the Marty from the second timeline, T-B. However, Marty-B in turn changes things so that HE lives in T-A!
Simply:
Marty-A now lives in T-B
Marty-B now lives in T-A!
Maybe a little dark for Marty-B, but let’s say that’s the Eric Stoltz serious version, and he makes things better? Idk
Also, ooh, Amalgam! That’ll be fun to see! I have a bunch of those comics, always loved them!
Back to the future is truly my favorite movie of trilogy of all time in my opinion.
the cartoon focused on Doc and his sons, I think mostly to appeal to kids and it was some times educational. The Tell Tale Video game focused on Doc and Marty and created an alternate time line Doc who got married and didn't invent time travel and dedicated him self to creating a world where people conformed to his laws.
Love for more episodes on this. Your Christopher Lloyd impression’s hilarious
I think my favorite version of time travel is where you can travel to the past, but only in a way that creates a causal loop (so you can't change anything that creates a paradox), and you can travel to the future, but doing so takes you to a future where you weren't around after time traveling since you haven't gone back yet (thus you can never see your own personal future). First saw it in a game I liked, though it kind of mucked it up at the end lol
31:36 So Amalgam Comics Month. Nice!
I’m pretty sure that Eric Stoltz tidbit has only gotten more infamous since The Flash movie referenced it like ten times. Which, I might add, had my theater cracking up.
As someone who majored in philosophy and minored in religious studies and is now pursuing a masters degree in popular culture, the religious implications of time travel is a FASCINATING topic and I’m kinda shocked I’ve never come across it before.
I audibly cheered when you mentioned Amalgam month. Thank you so much.
Didn't think you'd be doing a Back to the Future comic.
If you are wondering, I love the trilogy with my personal favorite being Part 3. I like Part 3 more than the other two because it felt like a sense of closure. Not only that but the best actor in the trilogy to me is Thomas F. Wilson who plays Biff Tannen and his various versions & counterparts. Not to mention that there was a Back to the Future game by Telltale that took place after the events of the trilogy where it focused on Marty McFly trying to find Doc Brown only to end up contending with serious time shenanigans involving a woman named Edna Strickland. It's crazy, I know.
I hope you one day do more BTTF comics since it has done crossovers with one involving Transformers. No joke. Back to the Future with Transformers and a Transforming DeLorean. You can't go wrong with that. Believe me.
I'm glad you're back to getting things out on time. I remember going to my comic shop to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Back to the Future franchise. They served a drink called a Flux Capacitor. It was bad.
01:33 I think, from what I've heard, one of the guys working on the BTTF movies has it in his contract from back then that no sequels are to be made with his approval, as long as he's alive. The Studio most likely would love to milk the franchise more, but, apparently, they have to bide their time til the guy dies.
Back to the future is the best film trilogy hands down
One of the better trilogies out there. Not best
@@Jai137let him have his opinion
Back to the Future is one of my favorite film trilogies of all time, because of the memorable characters, the Alan Silvestri music, and it introduced me to the concept of time travel. Part I was one of the first movies I remember watching. Part III was the 2nd movie I remember seeing in the theater (the 1st being The Little Mermaid). I remember seeing the animated series being advertised on TV, as well as seeing some episodes years later. I also rode the ride twice at Universal Orlando back in 2002 when it was still around.
9:06- And I am thanking God right now that Pure Flix or the like DIDN'T make Back to the Future. But there is that movie Assassin 33 A.D., where Jesus haters use a time machine to go back an assassinate Jesus, and it's laughably bad.
9:57- In the Flash movie, Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne talked about the multiverse by using spaghetti as an example, and his universe is one where Eric Stoltz WAS Marty from Back to the Future.
24:42- Now I'm reminded of that deleted scene from the first movie where 1955 Doc is looking through the "personal belongings" of 1985 Doc, and he finds a hairdryer, cotton underpants, and a nudie magazine.
Is that a BttF version of the AT4W theme in the end credits? If so, damn awesome.
"Is that a BttF version of the AT4W theme in the end credits?" That is is!
First. Also didnt expect this review until next week. You play catch up, you take it seriously. Good on you, Linkara.
The only Back to the Future comic I read was the Transformers crossover one. Sure it was just a 4 issue special to tie in with their Gigawatt figure but it was a good time! Also it made me want a figure of the hoverboard, who is ALSO a transformer in the comic...
"I'm honestly kinda shocked we haven't had a nostalgia-baiting sequel in the last few years [...]"
I'm awaiting the day this turns into a Hilarious in Hindsight moment.
I don't think i've ever seen them before, so i gotta say that i love the pride and trans cybermats!
8:17
Strangely, Dragon Ball Super (in the Future Trunks Saga) is probably the only work I can think of that actually dealt with the implications of Time Travelling in a world where deities exists and help shape the world.
this is pretty deep stuff for a comic about a wacky time travel movie. and I CANT WAIT for next week! I am a SERIOUS Amalgam fan!
Usually these comics and novelizations go where the movies can't. Star Wars also have very neat stories (both canon and legends).
Glad to see BTTF covered and off course having the Ancient Egypt gag back.
BTTF is my favorite film Franchise, yet I've not gotten around to reading all of the IDW comics. This was a solid story!
23:47 Why is it that we've never gotten a Back to the future/Doctor Who crossover comic book? Just imagine the possibilities.
Can it be the sixth Doctor? Since i'm pretty sure he was the doctor when the original movie was released
Yeah, that makes sense.
I like how the artstyle made them look very human
Megatron: ''hmmm...this time displacement device might be useful, Soundwave acquire this 'DeLorean'''
Soundwave: ''As you order, mighty Megatron...''
Great Scott! I had no idea there was a Back to The Future comic until now!
BTTF is one of those film trilogies I hope goes untouched. Sure they can make games and comics that probably wouldn’t be considered canon.
It's still a shame that Yusuke Murata wasn't able to get the BTTF license to make that BTTF manga he wanted, the BTTF cast looks pretty amazing in his art style. And it's such a wild pet project for such a well-known artist that it would've been amazing to see.
I wonder why he didn’t get the license? It sounds neat.
18:21 Now I just want Linkara to read through the whole comic with Doc's voice, it'd be HILARIOUS
Can you imagine what it'll be like, when Linkara did a review on Transformers and Back to the Future crossover comics? That would be so neat if he did that. But overall, nice review. I have seen all 3 Back to the Future movies, so you know how well prepared I am for this one.
A reboot to BttF COULD work. Send someone from modern times back to the 90s in an electric car so there's no where to charge it. Lots of potential to poke fun of like limited slow internet, no cell phones, or EA releasing good games.
Since you've now popped your Back to The Future cheery, perhaps you can now look at the Transformers/Back to the Future crossover comics. And I just realised, the Transformers have crossed-over with a lot of franchises in comics.
Just wait till Linkara gets to Back To The Future and Transformers crossover comic, its something else! Though ive never heard of this comic run till now, its a real interesting concept
God, Linkaras Doc Brown hat me laughting constantly throught the whole video.
The fact that Back to the Future hasn't had a nostalgic-baiting sequel or a reboot is a freaking miracle in this day and age. It's all thanks to Robert Zemeckis, who has final film rights to the franchise and has vowed to never allow a sequel or reboot be made as long as he is alive. I call this a win and that we should celebrate it.
It is surprising Zemekis hasn’t walked back given how much he’s sold out in recent years with stuff like the Pinocchio remake
@@skibot9974 That is true. Perhaps Back to the Future holds a very soft spot in his heart. I'm just happy that he's protecting the franchise. Back to the Future is in my Top 3 favorite films of all time.
It's fun to see the variety of franchises you get to cover, even if a quiet a few are due to Patreon requests. Oh and it's great news that Viga got a big commission and I hope it goes well for her.
Great review!
I enjoy the BTTF trilogy. My favourite is the third one. I just love the Wild West theme and Mad Dog is a great villain for that film.
I've got a few trades of the comic series. I've got Biff to the Future, Citizen Brown, (Which is based on the Telltale game) and the first 12 issues of the series. Recently reread them in preparation for your review, on the off chance I had the one you were going to talk about, and they're still good.
Highly recommend giving the game a play. It's a good time travel story about Doc's past and what could have happened if he never got into time travel.
Looking forward to the Amalgam comics and another cross of your "Comics I'd never review" list :D
Keep up the great reviews :)
Technically if you got the most recent anniversary edition of the movies, there’s a segment showing Doc Brown erasing 2015 technology (hover boards, re-hydrators, fly cars) because they started to blow up and destroy the world.
Otherwise Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis have lock tight contracts saying they’re can never be sequels or reboots.
Eric Stoltz is probably the Marty with the blue jacket.
I LOVE Back to the Future.
Back to the Future is one of my favorite trilogies
Great episode! Seriously can't wait for AMALGAM AUGUST!!
If the original Yarnball theory vid is gone could you make another? It sounds really interesting.
I think it would be funny as hell if you do a fusion joke during Amalgam Month.
loved this comic run, the bttf run was IDW at their best
Gotta disagree, personally I enjoyed their TMNT run a lot more, but their BTTF run was still amazing
Fat Grandma: Marty, MARTY YOU GET BACK IN THAT CAR RIDE THIS INSTANT AND GO BACK TO THE FUTURE FOR ME..... Who's doc Brown?!
Tony’s videos are indeed hysterical!
There was a transformes back to the future Cross over
You probably knew that but I must remind
Because it was pretty good if I remember
"Man, I need to get the Southland Tales Crossover back up, don't I."
YES! YES YOU DO!
Legends of Tomorrow explained this theory when Professor Stein had a daughter in the new current timeline; he was slowly gaining past memories of her childhood as time was catching up with him to fill in the gaps.
Wow, that finally made me see why Rick and Morty is believed to be a spiritual sequel to BttF, and where it comes from. Just imagine Doc and Marty ruminating about it some more (a whole lot more), Doc finding the multiverse, becoming cynical, in constant pain, becoming "Rick" and finding some sort of "Morty" instead of Marty...
Linkara should remake that time yarn ball vid & post it here.
Loving the new outro music on this one.
We haven't had a sequel or remake to the Back to the Future trilogy outside of the excellent Telltale game because the IP owner, Bob Gale, is actively forbidding it. And good on him for doing so.
My theory is that Marty was altered by his time travel. his more bold dad taught him to be more bold, so he has his trigger about the word chicken seen only in 2 and 3.
What’s intersting is in the novelization of Part 1 Loranine gets Marty to drink before the dance by calling him a coward. So in some form that was always there
The best part about Back to the Future is that if you had never known it had sequels it works as a single film, but because they actually had issues with getting the plot correct for the original sequel, we got two sequels that actually help build in and reinforce the themes of the first while still be enjoyable for their own merits.
it's really funny to me that you say there's a "slim chance" someone hasn't seen the movie trilogy cuz, I AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. yeah despite being knee deep in 80's and 90s pop culture for years (thanks to growing up on you and the critic) it's one of those big pieces of classic nostalgia i never touched. right along side ghostbusters, jurassic park, and ferris buler
they're pretty good movies for a weekend bing watch, strongly recomend
"As you can see from my modern shirt and mummy rapping, I've just done battle with man kinds greatest enemy to ever exist in the time stream .....ANCIENT EGYPT!!!.......God, I love this fucking show😂
I would love to see that video of the Yarnball Theory of Time Travel, if you still have it.
I took away two things from back to the future as a kid, Marty erased his original time line making himself a time orphan or Doc and Marty haven't figured out yet that alternate time lines exist. If there are multiple time lines then there is a chance Marty can go back but there's a new question as to how do we navigate time travel.
Great Scott! We have a Back to the future comic review!
great Scott! A back to the future review
You know Doc should have taken Marty to the early 2010s, then he could have showed him that Marvel's Avengers Assemble cartoon show episode where Thor ends up in an altered timeline because of Doctor Doom, where even with the alterations the Avengers still kept doing good and Thor told Doom flat out why even altering time won't stop them, "You miscalculated, Doom. Powers or not, my friends were always destined to be heroes. That will never change."
That would have helped Marty with this crisis.
