Mojang on their way to put 90% of their development resources into an april fools joke:
They remade aether but potatoes
The April fools jokes are only in one version of Minecraft and that’s exclusive to just Java. So coding this stuff costs a lot less when it doesn’t need to work across a dozen platforms.
Mojang also doesn’t need to worry about fans liking their ideas in these April fools updates. They can just put them out there and move on. If a grappling hook got added in 1.21 they may get tons of hate from fans.

Yes because this is only a Java thing, if they tried doing it to all the other platforms (which uses different coding language run by different companies) then it would be impossible
Mojang isn't in control anymore, they just do what they're told. They belong to Microsoft and it's no secret they try to control everything.
The April Fool's update is likely the only time they have full creative freedom.

Mojang doesn't have to polish, bug fix or think about how features fit in the game for April fools snapshots. Most of the features in the April fools snapshots are just retextures of existing features.

Quality assurance. Theres a reason the “report bugs” button is disabled in this snapshot.
It's Microsoft, Mojang is barred from adding anything in the game without exec meeting after exec meeting. But for April fools day patches they basically have free reign
If Mojang wasn't owned by Microsoft some of these ideas would be a part of Minecraft.

I'm glad that 1.21 is turning into a more whimsical and magical update rather than some ultra serious stuff limited heavily on reality like every Caves&Cliffs update we got. Minecraft is a magical game full of wonder. Not a game that should be limited by the expectations of reality.

I finally found my dimension that I've been looking for sooooo long
Before the comments get rolling too much, it should be noted that Mojang is heavily limited on what they can do for updates due to Microsoft. Apparently getting new ideas through is a nightmare because Microsoft knows Minecraft is lightning in a bottle and are worried about ruining it. April fools updates allow Mojang to go all out without restraint of corporate bureaucracy. Don’t blame the developers, blame Microsoft.
THIS! Absolutely this!!! All the features in April fools snapshots are barely tested & are ment to be absurd. Even if they wanted to add some of these features to the real game it would have to go thru months worth of polish & executive judgement.

You know what's really funny? In Bedrock, the add-on has an item called the Poisonous Potato Minecart, which moves super fast. I'd put money that that was directed specifically towards you.

Genuinely, these updates are infinitely (in some cases literally INFINITELY) better than anything we get in the official updates.
I know "it's easier to produce this stuff because they don't have to run it by a million different people" blah blah blah, but if anything these updates are just proof that mojangs command structure needs a huge rework if this is the amount of stuff we get when it isn't a factor. They need to massively rethink how they handle things internally, because the "joke" update has higher quality content than the stuff being produced under their usual methodology of having every dev have to check everything with loads of different people, its clearly stifling creativity, and slowing dev times to a crawl.

I mean, most of these April fools updates do not actually require a huge amount of work? Half the things in this update are just retextures? We've had the sky islands generation style for ages too, there really isn't that much "new" in this update, its just being repacked.
