It’s worrying that he had antidepressants at such a young age?
But as a parent I was reliant on medical profession,if they said it was appropriate think I’d go long with it, they wouldn’t know that it’s out of the ordinary as you do.
Parents who feel they may have passed on a condition feel guilt more than anything I would think?
To do that kinda crime he must have been incredibly disturbed!
How often do you think over medicalisation is responsible for cases like this?

I get that u wanna b the best u can b but at what cost? What are the long term effects to the brain of these stimulants? In my day anyone that cdnt sit still or cdnt concentrate just wasn’t the best student and it wasn’t ideal but parents didn’t wanna run to get their kids on meds. … so nowadays there’s a name for everything and drs seem to think meds are necessary. Is it possible that the mother here might have been PROJECTING some of her mental illness on this kid, that MAYBE he wasn't really clinically depressed & needing to be put on antidepressants at age 10. Maybe he was just a quiet, introspective kid. I had a wonderful psychiatrist discharge me from care once who told me, "There's nothing wrong with you. If anything, you are too keenly in tune with reality, & it makes you sad."
And maybe he didn't have ADD or need to be put on Adderall. Maybe he just wasn't challenged enough & was bored & acting out, & not the "perfect" son that his older brother apparently was.
I developed hypothyroidism as a result of some of the psych meds I was prescribed. Could this have been the case with him too?
Psych meds have so many side effects, some of them quite serious, like diabetes, which can lead to heart disease, & can shave YEARS of your life. I understand if they are genuinely HELPING. I'd take a shorter life with a higher QUALITY of life over a prolonged life full of mental anguish any day of the week, but having been on SO MANY different psych meds, almost none of which helped me, I would advise ANYONE, especially a child, or the parents of a child, considering a course of medication for their mental health issues, to give, as you said, "talk therapy" an honest go, with everything they've got, for as long as their disorder is manageable. I would advise them that psych meds should be considered ONLY as a last resort, if therapy doesn't work & the condition is not manageable. Also things like diet & exercise should be looked at. Some hyperactive kids just eat WAY too much sugar! And they spend WAY too much time indoors on their phone, or gaming system. If they'd go outside, get some fresh air & sunshine, burn off some of that "kid" energy, maybe they wouldn't be so restless & fidgety, y'know?
I've got a Jack Russell Terrier mix, & if I don't take him somewhere where he can RUN & JUMP & burn off some of his pent up energy, every single day, he's bouncing off the furniture, knocking s**t over, being a real brat. Yes, I know he's a dog, & that dogs & children aren't the same, physiologically, but you get my point.
Maybe this kid shouldn't have been taking all those pills at such a young age. They change your brain chemistry. THAT'S what they do! And if there's nothing wrong with your brain chemistry, & you're taking a bunch of psych meds & hormones that change your brain chemistry, wouldn't you be changing it for the worse?
Did his parents at least get a 2nd (or even 3rd) opinion before putting him on psych meds? I just feel he was overmedicated at too young an age, that he wasn't an outgoing, popular kid (which is OK!) & his parents, his mom in particular, wanted to "fix" him, when he didn't particularly need fixing. He just had a different personality than she wanted him to have, & between taking meds he didn't need, & her undermining his self-esteem by making him feel like there was something wrong with him, it really screwed him up. Obviously, right?
Then you add the immense pressure of being a teenager, wanting your classmates to accept you, like you, think that you're cool, & the way that everything seems SO IMPORTANT at that age, like life or death...it just wasn't a good combination. All these factors sort of aligned to form the perfect storm.
I'm not trying to victim-blame. I'm sure mom was acting with the best of intentions, & wasn't consciously aware that she might be projecting something onto her son that wasn't really there.
And I'm not trying to excuse him from his actions. He hadn't had a psychotic break. He had a firm grip on reality. He was aware that what he was doing was wrong. And he showed zero remorse afterward.
I think that the parents of young children should take this as a cautionary tale: Let your kid be who they are, let their personalities fully form, their bodies grow, before intervening with prescription meds that are going to alter their brain chemistry. Not every boy is going to be the captain of the football team & go to prom with the homecoming queen. Some of them will be quirky & socially awkward until they find their tribe, where they will be accepted, which is all any of us really want.
Tragic, senseless story. A real shame. Great analysis, as always, Dr Das! Nice guns 💪🏼 too! Have you been working out? Hmmm...? 😉✌🏼

  • @szendrich
    @szendrich 2 года назад +11

I would never have agreed to give any child of mine all those prescription drugs at such a young age. I feel the same way for myself as an adult. I took drugs to treat depression. They never really worked, but they did leave some adverse reaction to my health, which made me decide to stop using them altogether. I've personally been living with depression for at least 30 years, maybe more, so I'm familiar with the feelings involved. I have to tell you, Dr. Das, that I lost trust in psychiatrists and psychologists a long time ago. I had multiple negative experiences with several of them, which didn't bode well for the profession, to be honest. No offence to you ... you look to be a trustworthy professional, but at the end of the day, it's still one person's opinion that may well destroy another person's life.

In those interviews his clearly intelligent and also articulate and friendly. Other than his gigantic size (I think he was 6ft 9"!) he appears to be a nice, easy going (maybe bookish from the glasses) guy. Just another example of not judging a book by its cover, with hansome Ted Bundy being another example. Kemper was so good that a team of psychologists had also fallen for his charms. Showing that you never truly know another human, with the darkness often being very well hidden.
Then you have someone like me. People cross the road when I walk into town. Security guards follow me around shops even when I have my children with me. Police pull me over while I'm driving and I've even had them stop me on foot before! I've been told (same with my younger brother) that I have scary eyes or look like I'm about to kill someone. So I get 'profiled' constantly due to my appearance/walk/eyes/I literally don't know what, but the real deal human predators roam free!

One of my daughters has ADHD and Autism. It was a major decision to allow her to be medicated with Ritalin as a child. She was diagnosed with the ADHD at aged 6 yrs. I didn’t like the idea of my 6 yr old being on drugs so for 2 years I tried to learn how to parent her opposed to my other children. At 8 yrs of age she was very disruptive, particularly in school and had been excluded from 2 schools! So we went down the drug route, I can honestly say that they changed her life! She’s an adult now and graduated from college with diplomas, distinctions and merits in IT. She’s still on medication for the ADHD, her autism is somewhat of a challenge. I don’t think I’d of agreed to my child being medicated at 6 with antidepressants and there is something worrying about a child that young being given them. Counselling and CBT may have been a better option. A lot of doctors are too eager to write a script for antidepressants instead of accessing other services. Changing direction from my younger daughter to my eldest daughter now, she is on mood stabilisers, antipsychotics, antidepressants and sleeping pills! She was in a very violent relationship and nearly died from the last beating, pancreas was split in half, many other injuries too numerous for a comment. This was in 2018, my question is why the hell is she on these meds still and they’ve been added to! The weirdest part is finding out all and I mean all, her friends and associates are on the same meds! She didn’t meet these people in hospital etc; they all live within a minuets walk from her! When I spoke to my own GP, saying I was concerned about my daughter, he offered me antidepressants! But I had to wait for antibiotics for a uti! Is it me or has the medical profession shot the plot!!? Good video Doc, I enjoyed your live feed with black belt barrister too, very insightful. The case in this video I’ve watched on Emma Kenny’s channel too. So I was somewhat familiar with it. But still an excellent choice, you both work in the same sort of profession yet you both give differing perspectives, whilst still saying the same conclusions. It’s like watching a movie from different angles. Keep up your great content, 🌹

To mix it with cannabis or narcotics must have been even worse. It's also rather...heavy medication, and like other medications of that type takes the bottom of your mood, it takes the top as well. That is not a good thing, because it robs you of the good days and good experiences. It made me feel even more isolated from the excited people around me.

19:06 - I think it's more likely that he took his time before following through with the murders due to the conscientious nature the perpetrator. He took drugs beforehand in order to disinhibit himself enough to commit the act. The whole "I savored the moment before striking" story is probably Tyler embellishing the act, because at his core he was hungry for attention. It's the same reason why he bragged to his friend about committing the murders. He wants the infamy that comes with being seen as a ruthless killer. He also didn't care that people were trashing his house and had no idea who he was because at the end of the day, people are still at his house, with him. There is a disconnect between positive and negative attention with this guy - it's all the same.

@@APsychForSoreMinds It's not unusual in the US that the school district will force parents to medicate their child to allow them to attend school. I'm British so don't take my word for it! But I see some comments from people from the US here.
We're talking combinations of stimulants, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics etc., all at the same time. And this can be for children of 11. These drugs are given off-label, because obviously they're not tested on little kids.
Some US psychiatrists are convinced they can see symptoms of bipolar disorder in 6 years old and younger. No I'm not joking. They diagnose young adolescents with borderline personality disorder sometimes.
They are almost forced to use these labels by the health insurance system - from my perspective it seems as though a child has to have a label in order for the cost of treatment to be reimbursed. Appointments with a specialist sometimes have such a high co-pay (insurance excess), that it seems like they prefer to throw ALL the medications at the person at once. Obviously if you're on three psychiatric drugs, you don't even know which side-effects are coming from what, or whether they are interacting!
I'm not a specialist in any of this, I just look at it and go "that seems weird". So I may be completely wrong about everything.

I mean, I had never had any kind of suicidal ideation before or anything like that. Thankfully, I still had some grasp on reality and stopped taking it, went cold turkey. Would you mind wearing a shirt? Thank you. Uncomfortable watching you speak as a professional whilst wearing a tank top.

This has been addressed before. Usually Das doesn't dress so informally, but it is his channel, and he can wear what he wishes. He is a professional, no matter what he is wearing. This isn't a professional office setting, and there are no set restrictions on the aesthetics. I just wanted to warn you. Das isn't going to change his apparel to suit his channel's followers. He's not that type of dude. He's his own person.
