@@BH33312 The Leafs are very relevant. They have the reverse problem of just about every team in the league. Most teams that have fans roasting them are roasting them because the management are unable to build a team that have talent up and down the lineup and the management just can't build an effective team.
The Leafs have a management that's been very effective at building that kind of team, but the star players just don't care. That's very relevant. Competitive? No. Definitely not competitive. Relevant? Absolutely.
Relevant means worth talking about. Competitive means what I think you are going for.

Biggest question is... "How do you resolve all these contracts coming up??"
And my answer is the typical answer when it comes to managing successful relationships... good communication!
All these players know about the salary situation... get them all together! Tavares is already in at 11 mil, get Matthews, Marner, Nylander together.
Ask them if they want to continue to play together, or if they'd rather go get more money elsewhere. Matthews could definitely get 11, but maybe he'll take 10 or 9.5. Marner could get 10 if he continues on this pace, but maybe he takes 9 or 8.5. Basically... if all of them take a 1-2 mil paycut, they can stay together and do something special.
If you approach the issue by talking to them together as a group, I think you're more likely to make them all happy while also signing them for less. The whole point is to keep them together, so it only makes sense to speak to them as a group, see how they all feel about it.
If managed correctly, no one will feel pressured one way or the other, it's just about knowing where the players' interests lie, and then the organization can move forward with a plan in mind. I think something similar happened with Bozak and JVR, and a bunch of other longtime leafs that just left.
The reason I say that is because they all left on good terms. Not a single person seemed salty or disillusioned. I wasn't a fan of the organization before, but I did become a fan again when they were headed in the right direction.
Jets will always come 1st, but being from Toronto means that I'll always be happy to see the leafs successful too :)

I'm here after they missed the playoffs
If they won that game seven in Tampa in 2021, they would've won the Stanley Cup. There was no way Montreal was winning the finals that year. When they lost that game seven 1-0 in regulation on a SHG by Yanni Gourde, I knew it was gonna be a long time until they got that close again. 2021-22 was a difficult year with the season opening 13 game road trip, the covid problems in late November right as UBS Arena opened, and then a long gap between games in January because of the omicron variant and the fan and travel restrictions in Canada. 2022-23 they were a first round exit in the playoffs. 2023-24 has been absolutely miserable with all the blown leads and smashing records for the most overtime losses, not to mention the worst penalty kill in the league and they will likely miss the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

Bdots44 there’s only one nhl team on the west coast. Nobody out here cheers for Vancouver. We all cheer for either Toronto, Edmonton, Montreal or whichever American team is good
Steve, Adam & Jesse, I can tell you from experience that the World Cup is unlike anything you've ever experienced. Back in 2006 the World Cup was in Germany (I was 13 then) and one day we made a school trip to Cologne, one of the host cities. Coming off the train, I can't tell you how many people from all over the world there were. Swedes, English (those two played that day), Africans, Asians... Everyone was just partying and having a great time. With each other! I've never seen such joy, such fraternity in a single place. And that was the case all over Germany! Truly the happiest summer I've ever had. In 2026 the WC will likely come to Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto. So even if you can't actually attend a game, get ready for an unbelievable experience :)

Honestly who cares about the Big C. Just have 3 A's, have the mindset in the lockeroom that it's a team, not a competition. We don't need one, it impacts nothing.

davfernape exactly. It's something u have to really take into consideration and not rush it. Not even taking in the fact that being the Maple Leafs Captain is a BIG responsibility and the fans take that very seriously and don't wanna see it bounce from Tavares, to Matthews to whoever, right? If you're gonna slap it on someone's jersey, make sure it stays on that same jersey for a long while.
Also, u gotta make sure the team simultaneously agrees to that one guy taking the reigns. If some have a problem with that, don't even try it.

Teams are going to have a lot of trouble with match-ups. Have your main shutdown pair cover Tavares-Marner, and leave Matthews-Nylander open to dominate or vice-versa. Pick your ☠️

Big, goes in the corner and the opposition questions following (as it will hurt), and can kill penalties. points/offense don't matter, defensive minded ( would just be a huge bonus if he has a shot- as we are also lacking a big shot from the point - but at this point does it matter? JT!)

Isles fans don't want to face it, but their team's front office became complacent. They didn't build a team around JT to contend for about a decade, and they underestimated his desire to win a Cup. Toronto provided him an opportunity to do so. The only ones isles fans should be blaming is the front office.

Oh boy this was fun to watch.. Thanks Toronto for helping the Islanders. Losing John Turdvares was the best thing that could have happened. Ironically the Islanders had more points than the leafs the following season. Signing JT was a huge mistake. One they still pay for.

Kapanen: Completly reinvents playstyle to be a solid defensive winger, learns to kill penalties, Scores OT playoff game winner, scores short handed go ahead goal in playoffs, deemed too good to play on the Marlies anymore and lights up the WHC.
Babcock: Sorry you have to earn a spot on the third line.
yeah i feel for a lot of the guys not in the top 6 especially kap and leivo, kapanen is not a third line winger, hopefully he makes his way up the depth charts in the next few years or maybe another team will give him what he deserves
MrNiggah2 The third line will play almost as much as the 1st and 2nd lines considering they are the shut down line against the opposite teams 1st line. Kadri has had back to back 30 + goal seasons and so Brown-Kadri-Kapanan will get more then enough ice time. It's the 4th line that won't get any ice time. Brown-Kapanan both kill penalties as well and Kadri is elite on the PP. Johnnson can also kill penalties and can be put on the 3rd line and 2nd PP unit. I would much rather have the problem the Leafs have now, then not.
RoughRunner Kapanen will play on the 3rd line with Brown or Johnnson and Kadri at centre. Kapanen will also kill penalties and will also be on the 2nd PP unit at times. He will get more then enough ice time.
How come everyone is forgetting that the Leafs signed a big, mean, right handed defenseman with a hard shot and can skate, hit, fight, move the puck... hes not a teenage boy prospect from the AHL hes a 25 year old 6'2" 210 LBS man that plays against other men in the KHL.... he has a $950,000 cap hit and hes already on our team we signed him in May... his name is Igor Ozhiganov and seems like the type of player people are saying we should trade Nylander for but we already have him signed....

looking back all these years. tavares hasn't led them to a stanley cup. kinda surprising this "super team" hasn't produced more than one 2nd round appearance.
So I stayed up to watch this..... so after I’m done I look outside and the sun is almost risen

Different experience heading into this though for me. It was dropped by Maple Leafs Hotstove almost an hour before Friedman finally threw his hat on it where Tavares was going. So it was more of a slightly uneasy wait just sitting there for more to chime in on it.
Now to have fun with where things go from here. A crazy talented team that is going to be tough to handle.
And yeah I'm sick of seeing this "The Leafs can't be contenders without defensive upgrades." Bull! This team is has everything they need right now to be Cup Contenders. Whether they fulfill their potential or not is up to them. But they have a darn good goalie, some solid D-men, and a forward group that is utterly insane. Yeah they could and should look to improve the blue line. It's the weakest element. But they are drafting and developing so it isn't as if they are unaware. Quite frankly the blue line needs to be good enough for that forward group and Andersen to do the job.
The pre season games are to get the fans drooling for regular season and to hear the puck hit the boards

How is Miro Aaltonen not in the conversation for the fourth line centre position? He almost took the spot from Dominic Moore last year in training camp and he was a 20 goal scorer last year in the AHL.

Thing about be well rounded about a subject (all sports in this case) is that there are is something to being a specialist. If someone was to spend all their time focusing on a specialist topic (like, JUST hockey), chances are they will have deeper insight on it. When i talk to people who can flip over to world cup, baseball, college football etc etc its cool, i like it but unless your whole day-to-day is sports in general, you are probably scratching the surface of each.

Looking back 3 years after the signing, probably one of the worst days for the franchise in history, completely handcuffed the franchise financially, and forced almost all of their young depth out the door. You already had a Tavares in Kadri and you were paying him less then half of what you’re paying JT.
On the Captaincy.... Why do we need to rush Mathews into the captaincy? Why not groom Mathews under a JT captaincy as JT has already done it and knows the pressures etc. After the 7 years, when Mathews has observed proper captain wear the C for 7 years he will know what to expect and how to handle it ( + he will be 26 and still a great time to be the leader with the C)

Honestly I looked at Zaitsev's stats and I know it sounds like I just don't like the guy but I think his average is a lot closer to last season than the one before. I think Holl and Rosen both deserve a chance and I think they will prove they deserve a spot. Personally I think it will be Zaitsev or Carrick not Zaitsev and Carrick. I pray they don't put Zaitsev with Gardiner because neither of them do well together and Gardiner got all the heat and Zaitsev got, "well he's having a bad year" and "he's trying to clean up after Gardiner" and I don't think he's nearly the player people give him credit for.
Robinson Joe Zaitsev is closer to his first season where he was healthy, rather than the season where he wasn't. It also doesn't help that our forwards had trouble clearing out the puck. He's going to be a regular fixture on the 2nd pairing and he will prove the doubters wrong.
Nuke Fighter could be neither Carrick or Zaitsev. I wouldn't be opposed to

Blame Snow for not getting competent coaching.

You can blame both under different circumstances. With or without Garth, he was doing to Toronto. Issue was lack of transparent ambivalence.

Carter Cruise Well one, saying it always goes to the best players is just not true. And the whole point of having captains IS leadership, why give it to a guy who isn't a voice in the locker room? Phil Kessel was the best player in Toronto his whole time there, but he was definitely not a leader. And I'm not saying it has to go to a guy like Matt Martin or Ryan Reaves, but maybe base it off influence and not just, "oh he scores the most points". And if he does both, great, more power to him.

I would've loved video/audio for the Torts rant. I agree with Torts' statements, too. JJ had a bad year, so I don't get what Rutherford is on about. Not only did JJ have a bad year, but other players like Nutivaara were stepping up their game. I think it was pretty clear why JJ was a scratch.
