- Escape to the Italian Riviera for Shakespeare’s irresistible comedy of sun sea and mistaken identity.
---
The cast includes Katherine Parkinson (Home, I'm Darling, The IT Crowd) and John Heffernan (Dracula, She Stoops to Conquer).
Since 1931, the legendary family-run Hotel Messina has been visited by artists, celebrities and royalty. When the current owner’s daughter falls for a dashing young soldier, the hallways are ringing with the sound of wedding bells.
However, not all the guests are in the mood for love, and a string of deceptions soon surround not only the young couple, but also the steadfastly single Beatrice and Benedick.
Director Simon Godwin (Twelfth Night, Antony and Cleopatra) returns following the award-winning success of his Romeo & Juliet film.

I had the pleasure of this a couple of weeks ago - beautifully done and so entertaining!
Katherine Parkinson (as one would expect) is a PERFECT Fit for Beatrice!!
She's the PERFECT actor
I love how they bring it to the 20th century
😍👌🏻
20th century?
@@silentprotagonist9 It was a period of history that ran from 1900 to 1999.
The play appears to be set in the 1930s, which falls between those two dates because of mathematics.
@National Theatre PLEASE do tell me how those of us outside of the UK can see this! Would love to see it, even if only for Katherine Parkinson,
Can thoroughly recommend. Delightful production.
["I would eat his heart on THE INTERNET!" joke goes here]
it is a trek to the nearest theatre in my US state, but this is worth the effort
Really enjoyed this. Loved the acting, jokes, set design but the outfits had me captivated. Any chance of bringing out something so that we could enjoy them more or make them?
This was so good. I would recommend!
So this had to be the show Katherine Parkinson was referring to during Taskmaster
Goosebumpy event😊
Looking forward to seeing her in this.
Do you do NHS discounts?
Jen from IT crowd!
KATHERINE PARKINSON?!?!! :O
ah, katherine.
that's theater
Go Rufus!
Looks to be a bit more fun than the dire Rylance/Redgrave/Earl Jones 2013 version, the worst production I've ever seen
Did you try turning it off and back on again?
We walked out of the; Rylance/Redgrave effort, as did many at that performance. Amazing that the Old Vic management let them get away with it. Like doing Errors with eighty year olds.
It's not for you Jen
Oh dear
Yes, I think I can hear Shakespeare spinning in his grave!
@@Jen-lg4hp glad I am not the only one that found the delivery on some of these lines as being stilted and semi-literate. I am ok with reinterpretations, but forget the wokeness and the equity hires please. Just get the best actors in for the job. And What is with Benedick? He looks like a wet noodle, not a soldier that will ‘render a dear account’ from Claudio while also, mostly, holding his own in sparring matches with Beatrice. This appears to have all the charm of a high school production- if this is the best of it that they can offer up in a trailer. Huuurgh- just when we can get back to the theatre after COVID lockdowns, it hardly seems to be worth the price of admission or a taxi ride there. I despair.
@@virginiacharlotte7007 I was planning on going to the theatre while on a trip to London from the country, but having seen the incessant woke agenda- pushing in most (if not all!) London theaters/West End shows currently , and even in the Royal Opera (which is now insupportably woke!), I think I'll save my money, curl up with the original Shakespearean texts at home and, wait out this storm of woke propaganda in the same way that theatre owners waited out Puritan England and the closure of the theatres! It's only a matter of time before discerning audiences(those regular theatre- goers with money!) have the chance to show the current censors- in- chief of Wokedom how little we value their efforts! Money talks and those who the wokists are pandering to will NEVER attend in the numbers that we old fogies who grew up pre-wokism have/do! The tide will turn and this current woke Maoist trend will cease!
@@Jen-lg4hp I agree on all fronts. :)
@@Jen-lg4hp Are you guys all upset because Don Pedro is black?
