Hatching Pete: Disney's UNDERRATED Masterpiece

- Hatching Pete is a DCOM that doesn't get talked about often, at least not compared to some of the other ones from its era. So today, I decided to take another look at it, and talk about why I think it's underrated and deserves more attention.

just realized there's no zeke and luther reference in this video. im sorry. consider this video non-canon 😩
"If she was into Cletus as the mascot, then she don't belong to the streets, she belongs to the Sesame Street" was a line that had me howling
yeah so good.
that was so unfunny fam pls sthu
@@TheMimic12 when you said “she” are you referring to Jamie?
Yes I don't get why the coach was so worked up on the chicken. As a kid watching the locker room scene, even now I still ask why he didn't get fired😭
I remember Hatching Pete but I definitely under estimated it. Thank you for the dope video (btw loving the intro & background music mix) ❤. Mitchell’s hatch line is hilarious (cause they played it so dramatically) but it fits the theme and lesson so well 👌🏾
Den brother definitely should be on the list of underrated dcoms
Ooo yesss
4:56 this actually happened to me in middle school. Literally one of my teachers was like “who are you?” It was like halfway through the year at this point
Mitchell Musso was amazing n this and pair of kings. He potrays Nerdy class clown that's kind of a Jerk but somehow loveable really well. It's a bit different from his character on Hannah Montana, as he's a bit sweeter there and clumsy.
My youbg brain really thought this was just a really weird episode of good luck Charlie 😂
Anyone else notice the similarities between this and Let It Shine??
Yeah I was gonna comment on it in this video but I forgot.
Do let it shine 😭🙏🏾
this intro smacks
Can u do minutemen (2008) next that was undoubtedly the best Disney movie (that I can remember)
The musical ones always got pushed way harder (obviously because they were generally successful). This, Jump In, and Minute Men were the non-musical ones that I remember being actually pretty decent.
Was Jump In not a musical? For some reason I remember it being one.
@@MrNostalgia iirc, they had a decent amount of original music in the movie and that was, like, the main way they promoted the film. But the characters just do their routines to the songs instead of actually singing them.
And now I have Push It to the Limit stuck in my head.
It’s not, but like MoonBunny mentioned, it had a really successful soundtrack. In hindsight that’s probably why they’d re-air it in the late 2000s as often as they did.
Also Wendy Woo
Yeah, they always hyped the hell out of the musicals because of the Disney Marketing Strategy. Miley Cyrus is the best example, but musicals allow them to sell the music and then kick start a music career alongside the acting career and thus more $$$$
I literally wanted to be a mascot for my school after seeing this film. I got my school to create a mascot and so on and I was the mascot for 3 years. I danced around, played air guitar to the songs the players would come out to and helped out the music development by buying 5 doughnuts for every game and handed them out to everyone and anyone. Kids thought I was funny and wanted to steal my props I had. But I was no Hatching Pete, truly legendary.
That is LEGENDARY. You really had an idea and went with it completely. I love that.
Bro literally create his own destiny
Fun Fact: Jason Dolly has the most leading roles for any DCOM
really? i thought it was brenda song
@@nickdemarino5391I think it is Brenda since she has way more leading roles then him
This video better blow up. People need to remember this masterpiece of a film
Fr
Completely forgot about this movie
I never heard of it.
@@daryantsns3448 watch it it’s hilarious
I remember owning the dvd that had dadnapped and hatching pete together
Until I watched this video, all I knew of Hatching Pete was the poster. I assumed it was a movie about Mitchell Musso laying an egg that hatched into a teenager. I'm not kidding. I genuinely thought that. The sad part is that honestly that sounds like a DCOM that they would make.
My childhood assumption that the chicken mascot's name was Pete suddenly seems a lot more reasonable and a lot less embarrassing.
I laughed wayyy too hard at your comment 🤣 Logistically, how would they even go as a movie idea? Was it like an experiment gone wrong? 😭
I laughed too damn hard at this comment bruh 😭
@@Arri7979 they made Pixel Perfect, a movie where a kid in a band uses his dad’s government lab facility at home to make their new lead singer. they also made that Zapped, a movie where a teen girl’s phone can suddenly control boys after it SLID across a CABLE SATELLITE. i’m sure they’d be able to pull a teen hatching from a chicken out of their asses somehow😭
@@aced6333 Also How to Build a Better Boy where they use government tech to make an Android boyfriend
Pete and Angela are legit one of my favorite Disney couples. I love how even though Pete got all his popularity from being the chicken, Angela noticed him way before that just for who he was. Unlike the girl he liked at the beginning of the movie.

Brian Stepanek is doing mad bank at Nickelodeon nowadays, I don't care for the show but it makes me happy to see the king still winning 👑
Fr. Bro was on Nicky Ricky Dicky and Dawn too
@@MrNostalgiaWhich was made and released by Nickelodeon.
Finally someone else mentions the greatness that was Brian O Brian
Truly a underappreciated DCOM
I ALWAYS THOUGHT HATCHING PETE WAS SO OVERLOOKED and I don’t know why 😢
Hatching Pete , minutemen and Wendy wu
Wendy Wu was a straight banger, ngl.
Love the video, this was iconic back in the day. Minutemen and Jump In were two films that were underrated as well
Jump In was my growing up one
Minutemen & jump in both were so unforgettable to me like actually legendaries in the DCOM franchise 💀 minutemen was creative and different and starred Disney familiars, while jump in was realistic and relatively relatable. Plus a majority (if not all) black cast for a DISNEY DCOM?? Til this day, im a keke Palmer fan 😭❤️

I think the other thing that made this movie great was the chemistry especially Between all of the actors (except sonny with a chance girl lol) especially the friendship between the two leads, I think Mitchell's and Jason's acting was spot on. They bounce off each other wonderfully and pulled off that toxic sorta one-sided friendship dynamic perfectly.
They both really capture their characters perfectly and I'm proud of Mitchell in particular because it's easier to play a likable character than an accurately disrespectful character. He NAILED that _"where my hug at??" starter pack_ personality lmfao. The writing was really good, all of the characters were fully flushed out and seemed like _genuine_ people.
YESSSS, i’m so glad you covered hatching pete!! this is one of my fave disney movies and makes me so nostalgic but no one ever knows what i’m talking about 😭😭
That moment you realize Disney remade this movie twice with Radio Rebel and Let it Shine.
maybe more
Let It Shine, Minutemen, High School Musical, Camp Rock, Jump In.....Disney isn't original, just mixed up the details
I mean, Let it Shine is a more modern version of Cyrano De Bergerac, even down to the name. But Disney does love this story of a shy kid who while obscuring their face, they are entertaining people.
Hatching up another great video I see.
ah good one mate.
The only issue I have with this movie was that they blew the horn after every made basket, someone on post production had to know that's not a thing in basketball right?? Great video about a truly underappreciated DCOM!
i remember that commercial for it so, so vividly, they played it so much. the 'hes brash, and bold, and daring!" followed by the "you can live your whole life in a shell" bit is seared into my brain
I wonder if cleetus spoke ahead of time to his dad and a teacher/coach that he could not be the rooster anymore, but picked someone who wanted to remain anonymous, it would have made him a smidge leas problematic. The mystery would still be there along with the fame getting to cleetus’s head.
Locker room scene is different because of the following speculations as a film director myself
1) Actors were probably told to portray this in a way to make the severity of the relationships affected are felt after the scene.
2) Editing, Cinematography and pacing are 1000% different, almost as if they got Walt Disney Studios crew to do it instead of DCOM studios crew
They filmed this at my old high school! Sadly it's been torn down and a new one built in the parking lot, but it was part of 4 Disney Channel movies back in the day. Fun way to see my old school.
I always wondered what it was like to see your school as the set of movies
Just curious, where was this filmed? It looks like somewhere in Colorado or Montana
Edit: just learned it was Utah from Bradley and Jake’s podcast interview with Jason Dolley
This and Luck of the Irish are 2 of my favorite Disney tv movies
I LOVE this movie I always talk about it even if I'm speaking to the void. It's one of my comfort movies i often watch it when I need something chill to watch. Watching it as an adult, I will say it falls flat sometimes it feels boring in some scenes but the scenes that are great are really great! Personally I was very invested in the romance between Angela and Pete I LOVED them. That scene where he says she looks cuter everyday and picks her up had 10yo me in a CHOKEHOLD. I replayed that scene so many times growing up and genuinely I still do its VERY CUTE TO ME!!! anyways I love this movie I chruly don't care if people think it flops or sucks. It's simple and fun with a cute little romance, that's all I need.
Thank you for the hatching Pete appreciation, for seeing what I've seen since it dropped😭
Lol great comment. Yeah I will say the romance was done better in this show than some other DCOMs. I'm just personally not a big romance in media person. Glad you enjoy it though.
@@MrNostalgia for sure! Definitely looking forward to the starstruck vid too!
Love this, would love to see a video on Holes or Sky High
Sky High is one of my fav movies ever so I will probably cover it at some point
This movie was great! They took a totally absurd premise and went all the way! A school whose basketball team (which seems to be the only sport they have) couldn't be worse if they were all amputees, so the mascot is the real star of the athletic program, to the point that it's passed through a family like an heirloom and it's a major crisis for the whole town if the wrong person wears the costume.... they seriously went all in on that concept, and it was GREAT!
This was filmed at my high school and you could volunteer to be an extra in it and the teachers got annoyed at the kids not coming to class to film it. Lol😅
Ngl as someon with social anxiety this video almost made me cry. Especially the end at the game 😭 it’s so corny but I love just generic goofy feel good movies. definitely watching this 😅
Dawg you can’t name someone that looks like Mitchell musso Cletus. It’s not allowed.
This man Pete really stole a car and committed Grand Theft Auto
After your Starstruck review can you talk about Disney games? I keep seeing the poster of the logo in the background in your videos all time.
👀
Jason Dolley was the king of Disney Channel
Minute men has to be up there with underrated DCOM
Yooo this was probably the last DCOM i watched as it was a little after my time. And damn what a banger to go out on. Was pleasantly suprised that it was not only so good but better than some of the ones I grew up with. Hyped to see this pop up in my recommended.
Fun fact this was filmed in Utah. And the company that made the mascot is the company my mom works at
That's fire
Brian O’Brian reference in 2023 is crazy. I’m realizing there’s so many of these random one off DCOMs in the late 2000s nobody talks about often. Another W video 🙌
Calling them one offs is so weird, like the majority of things don't call for a sequel but the phrase one off is usually used for things that could've or should've had one.
Stopped at that poll screenshot to say that Hatching Pete, Den Brother and Dadnapped are all iconic and I cannot wait to see you cover three of my fave DCOMS
My conspiracy theory is that you like the chicken because he looks like you.
That's racist.
I don't know why this popped up in my recommended, but I'm so glad it did! I honestly thought I had dreamed this movie, because I only ever saw the last 15 minutes of it once when I woke up in the middle of the night after leaving the tv on the Disney channel. I had no idea what the movie was called, but I like the little bit of it that I saw.
I kinda got into Mitchel Musso's music a couple years ago after binging old disney shows on disney+. Him and Emily Osment have some great songs, even if they had a lot of outside writers on their albums that came out when they were with disney. I think Mitchel and Emily have better songs than the big disney stars like Hannah Montana and Demi Lovato. I wish Mitchel was still making music, because his self titled album was great. Emily Osment is still making music under the name Bluebiird, which is pretty sweet.
Idk how to fully explain this, but Hatching Pete gives me old DCOM vibes like pre high school musical. I can’t really articulate why, but I think there was a definite shift in the style of DCOMS around that time.
I watched this movie bc i had a phase where i was obsessed with Mitchel musso so i went on a little marsthon. His music was fire and Pair of Kings was hella fire!
Jason Dolly was a class actor and under appreciated.
This was one of my favorite DCOMs as a kid! It was my go-to sick day movie. I actually bought it on itunes (when that was still more of a thing) so you *know* I really liked it lol. Although a big part of that might have just been that I thought Jason Dolley was really cute 😅. It feels so forgotten compared to other dcoms of the day, so happy to see you talking about it!
You're completely right about how likable Pete is (although I was a little annoyed during his most doormat-y moments) and how *awful* (yet still fun to watch) Poole is. Poole definitely should’ve faced more consequences for how he acted though. Also I love how the whole town is absolutely losing it over a mascot doing normal mascot things - it's like none of them have ever seen a typical mascot before.
honestly what surprised me the most about this masterpiece of a dcom is the fact that the principal that brings out the chicken signal is the actor that played richard gilmore on gilmore girls
I completely forgot about this movie but oh my goodness I now remember watching it quite a few times when it was running on the channel. Also did not think I would recognize Angela’s actress but I know her as Bud’s fiancée from Grace and Frankie.
I completely forgot about this movie but the second I saw that thumbnail it awakened something in me and I definitely remember seeing this on tv back in the day.
All these jokes towards Mitchell Musso’s musical career and the only song I actually remember is Reduce Reuse Recycle ♻️
I respect the hell out of any actor that gives it their all, even for a made for TV movie. Literally making chicken salad out of chicken shit
So our votes didn't matter at all? Democracy...
if no one has said it already, HARD AGREE . let it go by mitchell musso and tiffany thornton is a fucking BOP. i was obsessed with that song when this movie came out 😂
Hatching Pete and Minute Men might just be the best disney channel original movies ever.
5:42 ROOKIE Kemba Walker on our 2012 Charlotte Bobcats
The ancient Anthony Davis footlocker commercial was great. I love how I watch these videos and see a bunch of nba references
Could you do a video on the ramifications of the disney channel shared universe, like all the moments where Wizards, Bionic humans, and superheroes and villains couldve easily met and assisted each other, or the fact that all slowly get exposed over time….like if Adam, Bree, Chase, and Leo can expose bionics, can’t wizards do the same?
This movie was the sole reason why I wanted to be a mascot
You know your basketball team is ass when everyone is hyped for the mascot
Just found your channel the other day and I am loving it. Keep up the good videos. Also will you eventually be doing a video on Geek Charming? Don't know why but I like that one.
I’m so happy that someone finally understands that Jason dolly is a Disney Channel legendary back in the era❤
I’ve been loving the content you’ve been putting out man, keep up the great work! It’s so cool how you don’t massively alter your manner of speaking in these vids, I never would’ve expected to hear that Hatching Pete was running from the ops in a long form vid like this focusing on a Disney movie. Also I have to mention how glad I am that you found some way to include a clip from the Rugrats movie in this vid, it actually spooked me as you snuck it in near the end 23:33
another movie, jessica darling's it list, has a very similar plot to this, just the plot of hatching pete is a bit smaller in the story. it'd be interesting for you to review that as well.
also awesome video and very entertaining and funny!
I’m surprised no one talks about how the first girl is no longer talked about thru out the whole movie
i forgot about this until Jason dolley was on Bradley Steven perry (gabe from good luck Charlie) and Jake shorts (fletcher on ant farm) podcast and he brought it up
Teen Beach Movie is unironically a master piece, and I'm someone who hates musicals
i never noticed the girl tried to cheat on her boyfriend 😭
This review has made me genuinely want to see this movie now. Definitely earned a sub and recommendation to friends.
Thanks Josey!
I really hope you make a video about Dadnapped literally noone likes or remembers that movie but its such a staple of my childhood i absolutely adored it lmao
And let's come full circle by stating that the father of Peter is played by the teacher of Mía Thermopolis in Princess Diaries, the one who would become her stepfather .
To me minuteman is most definitely the best DCOM but im 22 now and im glad i grew up in the best era of disney channel its insane how much the quality has dropped when you see whats aired now.
Agreed, It’s just not the same anymore
I wanna see some CN original movies/specials, like... I wanna see a break down of Good Wilt Hunting
I had such a huge crush on the actress that plays Angela.
As a former school mascot, I can confirm that it does not have the desired effects.
I remember they use to air the music video on Disney channel 🤣
No it’s not the first time that a Disney channel original movie showed blood, the first time was 1998s Brink!
I LOVE this movie because it's not just about basketball like some other DCOMs. It's also about parties. Everybody loves parties so hey, why not? Besides Mitchel and Jason are both my celeb crushes. No lie! Anyways, here's some suggestions for more movies. Wendy Wu; Homecoming Warrior, Rip Girls, Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, Avalon High, Invisible Sister, and Phantom of the Megaplex.
Would love reviews on the Twitches movies, pair of Kings and Zeke and Luther!! Found your channel recently and I'm really enjoying the content 🌟
“All Disney D-Coms have a token single parent.”
Lizzie McGurie movie: parents married
Camp Rock: parents married
High School Musical: all characters parents are married
Starstruck: parents married
I can keep going 😂😂😂
In Starstruck, the grandmother is a widow meaning at some point in time she was in fact a single parent.
As for the other one, I'm sure I'll find a single parent in there somewhere 😂
Fuck I never skipped this movie whenever it came on. Growing up bullied for being gay, shit like this movie and spiderman really helped, just the idea of being able to be someone else. So cheesy, but I look back at younger me and remember the comfort this movie brought. Now I do cosplays and it's always nice to make people smile by being someone else 🫡
i used to have the biggest crush on jason dolley and would replay this movie and minutemen all the time (illegally, but disney doesn't need my money)
Remember this movie being promoted a lot. Also Brian doing his best Jim Carey impression is hilarious.
My friends and I recently rewatched Hatching Pete. I knew about it when it premiered but never actually watched it. My friends had the hots for Jason Dolley. I thought Angela was sweet, but the fact she was going cheat on her boyfriend made me look at her sideways.
i watched this movie sometime in the last 2 years and it made me miss my childhood 😅 loved this movie and minutemen
They did the whole face perspective inside the suit before iron man came out
A while ago I set out to watch all the DCOMs in reverse chronological order. As I went along this journey I ranked all of these movies and put Hatching Pete at the bottom giving it a 0/10. I hate this movie with a passion. Some DCOMs are too cliche (Star Struck), some are bizarre (Pixel Perfect), some are basically unwatchable (Zapped). But this movie has committed the unforgivable sin of being boring and forgettable. I’ve tried re-watching it and cannot justify wasting even more of my life on it. However, respect that someone out there likes it even if I wish I could scrub this movie from my memory.
Great video. Im glad you brought up the difference of DCOMs
Mitchell Musso went to a TPUSA event a few years back lol
As the sponsor of the mascot, this is complete BS. I know who is in the costume at all times. There most definitely is an adult who knows which student is in the costume.
What are YOUR thoughts on Hatching Pete?
I loved it as a kid it was silly and no realistic for the most part but that's why in my personal opinions I loved watching it because it takes you out of your everyday Middle School, or High School bull shit your always worrying about for a Funny Fun family Classic Disney Channel Original Movie for The Disney Channel Station!
@Mr .Nostalgia you should talk about the movie Quints with the girl from Halloween town about triplets or something I remember this movie being on air a lot in 2014 #Kimberly j brown #trashquints
The guy playing Mitchell Musso's dad does not look old enough to be Mitchell Musso's dad.
Am I the only one seeing the similarities between this movie and let it shine?
That's hilarious because I was going to actually talk about it in this video but I ended up scrapping it. But they are more or less the same film
