David Lynch as John Ford in Spielberg’s The Fabelmans. Stole the show in such a small role. “When the horizon's at the bottom, it's interesting. When the horizon's at the top, it's interesting. When the horizon's in the middle, it's boring as shit. Now, good luck to you. And get the fuck out of my office!”
Terrible loss for me. I was planning on showcasing Wild at Heart at my film school tomorrow for Film review of a picture that is important to you. Now I will also pay tribute to him, he was my idol. :(
“The Straight Story” is his most underrated film and a masterpiece which I felt would only get more word in his passing…and since the news broke, I have already seen people starting to talk about it again.
Said flick is an overlooked gem. A magnificent film. Let's hope that many now visit the most unexpected of his works (for no one would ever connect Disney and Lynch).
For me, Mulholland Drive is one of the greatest films ever made. No matter how many times I’ve seen it, I’m always taken on a journey with it and appreciate the strong emotions it drags out of me. No film captures the feeling of a dream descending into a nightmare better.
This did not cover enough David's relationship with philanthropy of the most extraordinary kind... His David Lynch Foundation funded the instruction in the Transcendental Meditation technique for millions of students in at-risk schools and inner city communities, as well as veterans with PTSD, abused women and native Americans. He gathered together dozens of practitioners of TM, such as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sting, Hugh Jackman, Katy Perry, Russell Brand and many others, to perform and raise money for his foundation. As a veteran, I know of thousands of men and women who benefited from Lynch's inspiration and wisdom. And his foundation is now funding programs globally. He will be missed, but his foundation's work will continue to enrich, inspire and enlighten millions of people -- in a way that expands minds and hearts, even more skillfully than his film-making prowess. David Lynch will live on in the lives of millions of people, and will continue to pave the way for a wise, loving and harmonious world.
He was brilliant, portraying John Ford. My favorite ever and living in LA, I was worried because he was diagnosed with Emphysema last year. Rest in peace, David Keith Lynch.
Mulholland Drive is the film for me. It's one of my all time favourite films. At first pass, you wonder what it is you are watching, but it's a cleverly crafted, entertaining, at times horrifying, but profound story. But, there's other films like The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Eraserhead that spring to mind too. Will never forget Twin Peaks also. I was only a young child but I'll never forget everyone saying, "She's dead, wrapped in plastic". His filmmaking was highly surreal. He could tap into unconscious fears and desires like no other director. Watching his daily weather reports during covid was a comfort. We have truly lost one of the greats. RIP
Twin Peaks, namely because I live in a logging town and it reminded me so much of where I live, including the fact that our saw mill as in the show was shutting down in the 90's. He was truly unique, an artist and filmmaker, a great combination. He certainly was original, something lacking today in films.
Thank you John, this was therapeutic...To say I'm heartbroken is an understatement, I honestly have no words right now other than eternally thank you and RIP Mr. Lynch
I have been a huge David Lynch fan since Twin Peaks. I have seen through some news stories and interviews now, and so far my absolute favourite has not been mentioned by name. Lost Highway is literally my favourite movie of all. I love Seven Samurai, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Godfather, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Blade Runner, list the greatest. After 50 watches, it still makes me laugh, cry, and everything in between. Rest well, visionary.
heartbreaking news~ my favorite filmmaker of all time. rest in peace, dear soul, your amazing art will always inspire. hope you got that perfect cup of coffee when they welcomed you to heaven 🤍
I saw DUNE in theater when I was 9, so for me this movie will always have a special place in my heart even if it's not the one that defines the awesomeness of David Lynch the most.
Lynch as been a huge influence on my work as a filmaker and creative director, and I have seen every one of his movies, many multiple times. no other filmaker explored surrealist filmaking to the fullest extent before he did. RIP David
I feel David Lynch was more of a surreal artist than a storyteller, and you couldn't deny his abstract ideas made you think. Twin Peaks helped launch The X-Files, and The Elephant Man remains one of the Great Films in history. You can tell his influence in movies and television, Doom Patrol comes to mind, that continues to give us lateral thinking and creative landscapes. It would be interesting to see what he was presently working on when he passed.
Eraserhead is one of the most wholly unique and engaging work of surrealism. The feeling the imagery and sound give off is incredibly powerful. Lynch was one of the few directors who best understood that feeling and emotion and atmosphere were more powerful than any kind of logical comprehensive narrative. RIP
Lynch was one of my all time favorite directors.😢 In his life, he was a living legend, now he is a _real_ Legend. A unique creative mind with a brilliant sense of humour and artistic flair for the weird and absurd. 🏁🥀
Twin Peaks is my all time favorite TV show. (Yes I loved The Return as well!) It actually paved the way for the X-Files a similar show about the paranormal. (Both starred David Duchovny!) Also Mulholland Drive is one of my favorite films of all time. And The Straight Story always brings a tear to my eye. Lynch is so sinilar to Kubrick in so many ways. Rest In Piece David Lynch you will be missed!!!!!
Gonna miss him, Twin Peaks the return is an absolute piece of art, its David Lynchs best 18hr movie, it literaly is a movie and it is his best work and his last we will ever see unless he had some unreleased work we dont know about. Wisteria
David Lynch is a one of a kind director. I love his movie The Elephant Man. One of my best memories of him is when I saw The Fablemens in theaters and I saw Sammy talking to John Ford. I didn’t know this until I went home that David Lynch himself played John Ford. Rest Well David Lynch.
Lynch is on my Mt Rushmore of directors. So many of his films are in my list of favourite movies. Such an eclectic artist. Imagine the same guy directing The Elephant Man, Dune, The Straight Story and Twin Peaks? Legend.
I think Dune and Blue Velvet were the first movies that actually made me think about the craft of film making. Lynch was an interesting person who made interesting art, and there aren't enough like him. Also he nailed it as John Ford in The Fablemans.
I've only ever seen The Elephant Man & found it utterly devastating. Got to watch his other movies at some point. RIP & sending good vibes to his loved ones.
A true visionary legend. I would've loved to see him direct some of our most talented young actors today like Pattison, Emma Stone, Chalamet, Keogan, Qualley, etc.
Am so very sad to hear this news. The world has lost a great artist. My first viewing of a Lynch film was INLAND EMPIRE. I was stunned into submission, so I watched it again to make sure my memory wasn't playing tricks. It is sensational. Everyone has their favourites. Mine is Mulholland Drive
The Grand Dad I never had...He was the change/zeitgeist in the mid 90's that inspired every form of media since. He was the Isaac Newton of Television since Twin Peaks...
The first Lynch film that I saw was "Lost Highway in the theater in Denver, CO in 1997, so that film has a special place in my heart. I was hooked on Lynch's work after that. His best films that come to mind are, Eraserhead, Twin Peaks: Fire walk with me, and Inland Empire were Lynch's best films in my opinion.
First intro for me as a teen was Mulholland Drive for... reasons. Then Eraserhead in later teens. I became very interested in movies that were difficult to understand - maybe because I had difficulty understanding things lol It was like mental exercise to watch. From there I saw Blue Velvet, and bits and pieces of the others like Lost Highway. Some of the others didn't really stick with me BUT my appreciation of his unique style is very high and I audibly groaned when I saw the news. He's left behind a mark on moviemaking and me.
He did say that if he directed another movie, he’d have to do it over FaceTime due to a lifetime of smoking. His health rapidly declined after they evacuated him from his house to avoid the LA fires. So, that basically killed him.
I can still remember watching Twin Peaks when it first aired and the fever that ensued. A truly unique individual who will be missed both creatively and personally.
Mine too. I know it has its issues as an adaptation, those aside it is a classic film. I even like the extended cut that is on youtube. It changes the rain at the end, but you really don't need that part and it rounds out some of the other issues / elements.
Sad day. When the fires in LA broke out, one of my first thoughts was if Lynch was safe, thats how big a fan of his I am and how much of an effect his films and projects had on me as a thinking human being. I was introduced to his work with Dune, then fell in love with his work on Twin Peaks. My favorite movie of his, is Blue Velvet, but Lost Highway is a very close 2nd. This man will be missed in this household.
A sad day. Even though I was aware of his health issues I didn't get the sense that they were life-threatening. I regret not attending a lecture on creativity and meditation he gave in New Haven, Connecticut. It was my only opportunity to see him in person. Even though I drifted away from his career over the last decade or so the influence his early films had on me linger. When I saw Eraserhead for the first time I was never quite the same afterwards. It was my doorway into the "midnight movies" sub genre. Seeing The Elephant Man in 1980 was an unforgettable experience. By the time Blue Velvet was released I was a devoted fan. Twin Peaks became an obsession. Even those films that I have mixed feelings about are still unique and unlike any other director in modern cinema. The Straight Story is among my favourite of his films. Even a G rated film made in cooperation with the Disney studio still had those David Lynch touches but never overshadowed the simple story of a man travelling to see his brother. He was one of a kind.
One of the more memorable contributions David did that means alot to me was his acting in Lucky. A minor role but his performance in it still sticks with me to this day
RIP Lynch is my second favorite director of all time. Only behind Hitchcock. Fun fact: He was the first person George Lucas offered the director job to for Return of the Jedi. Lynch turned down the job because he wasn't a fan of Star Wars, and he wanted to do Dune.
I havent amounted to anything in my life when it comes to the arts, and while it may not seem like it, this artist had a beyond outstanding influence on my interpretation and subconscious translations of great art and culture. This news really hits me right in the gut. Rip!!!

A lot of comments I have seen note how great his movies or how amazing he was a director, but I can't help of Maggie May Fish video that talked about how well he treated the actors on his sets. It seems rare these days to hear about a director who collaborates with their actors rather than treating them like puppets.
Many great artists in film, art and music can be bad people. Stanly Kubrick and Francis Ford Coppola were other directors with a reputation of being unpleasant people. It doesn't detract from the quality of their movies.
My connection to Lynch was because of TM (transcendental meditation.) He was a HUGE proponent and like me first learned of it when the Beatles dabbled and brought Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to our tiny town of Fairfield, Iowa! Long story, but wow... he was SO incredible in his art and mind. I'll watch your video now... thanks.
As i visited New York in early 1981 , it was Oscar season and after seeing the poster of The Elephant Man i felt compelled to see that movie. Little did i know how this film would change my life and my orespective on cinema and what can be done in this medium and the stories that can be told using this medium. Is a beautiful film told with such humanity , a cast that is pure gold ( although we all know why Anne Bancroft got her role). A unique voice in cinema and one of my all time favorite filmmakers now gone. May you rest in peace maestro Lynch , thank you for your legacy.
Fans of his heard about an emphysema diagnosis in the last couple years or so & as a heavy life long smoker that's not too surprising, but this news today is still an unfortunately heavy blow.
"Wild at Heart" - gloriously gratuitous and super cool (David let Nic Cage totally indulge in his Elvis obsession). It also features Willem Dafoe's most disturbing role (which is saying a lot). Let's not overlook the absolutely wonderful "The Straight Story." Going in blind, no one would guess it was directed by David. It is a ruminative, peaceful and kind tale of forgiveness. Highly recommended. PS - "Mulholland" is fantastic, too, obviously.
David Lynch is one of the most creative artists period. Nobody has a mind like him. Absolutely devastating. Rest in peace

Mr. Lynch had emphysema. Rest in Heavenly Peace...
He's not dead, actually. He just disapeared into the blue box. SilencioooooOOOOOOOOOOO !!!
“The Straight Story” is his most underrated film and a masterpiece which I felt would only get more word in his passing…and since the news broke, I have already seen people starting to talk about it again.
I do agree. Maybe finally my favorite movie of his because the story, the simplicity, the actors. It is so touching and essential.
Said flick is an overlooked gem. A magnificent film. Let's hope that many now visit the most unexpected of his works (for no one would ever connect Disney and Lynch).
4 out of my top ten movies beling to David Lynch with Mullholland Dr. at #1 and FWWM at #3.
RIP legend.
Fix your hearts or die.
For me, Mulholland Drive is one of the greatest films ever made. No matter how many times I’ve seen it, I’m always taken on a journey with it and appreciate the strong emotions it drags out of me. No film captures the feeling of a dream descending into a nightmare better.
Lost Highway, What a soundtrack 👌 🎶

David Lynch films to me are if Salvador Dali’s paintings were to come alive. What a revolutionary icon in the big and small screens. RIP
Mulholland Dr is my favorite, he was a painter at heart and it showed in his films. We lost a great one. RIP David Lynch 😢
I'm a Blue Velvet fan. He also had the best cameo in Spielberg's The Fabelmans, a cameo that surpasses every MCU cameo.
He was brilliant, portraying John Ford. My favorite ever and living in LA, I was worried because he was diagnosed with Emphysema last year. Rest in peace, David Keith Lynch.

He was such an icon his name now and forever will describe a style. Lynchian. There will never be another.
Eraserhead changed how I saw movies. It really inspired me. And for that I'll always be grateful.
100% did the same thing for me...there was me pre-Eraserhead and post-Eraserhead, I'm going to miss the man terribly
There’s never been a creative force that has shined brighter, or had more of an influence on me than David Lynch has. He was the epitome of an artist.
Twin Peaks, namely because I live in a logging town and it reminded me so much of where I live, including the fact that our saw mill as in the show was shutting down in the 90's. He was truly unique, an artist and filmmaker, a great combination. He certainly was original, something lacking today in films.
To this day Lost Highway is still maybe the scariest premise I can think of for a film.
One of the great directorial minds of the last century. Sad day for him to leave us. He would be honored by how much we think of his works and legacy.
I'm so sad you guys. I adore this man. My heart hurts. 🖤
Thank you John, this was therapeutic...To say I'm heartbroken is an understatement, I honestly have no words right now other than eternally thank you and RIP Mr. Lynch

heartbreaking news~ my favorite filmmaker of all time. rest in peace, dear soul, your amazing art will always inspire. hope you got that perfect cup of coffee when they welcomed you to heaven 🤍
I think that his The Straight Story does not get enough attention. Such a sweet movie and not at all what you would expect from Lynch.
YES!!! The Straight Story is an overlooked gem!
David Lynch completely changed the way I view cinema and the world. I'm gonna miss him
In some alternate universe there’s a version of Return of The Jedi directed by him.
A sad day. 😢
One of the greats of cinema. RIP😞
I saw DUNE in theater when I was 9, so for me this movie will always have a special place in my heart even if it's not the one that defines the awesomeness of David Lynch the most.
A true artist - he could do everything himself.
What a legacy he has left for us.
R.I.P. David Lynch

I cried.
Rammstein is one of my all time favorite bands and their career was helped massively by David Lynch putting their music in the lost highway soundtrack
David Lynch and Chris Carter saved TV and its darkest time
I was praying for one more movie from him. RIP
RIP to one of the last true artists. Perhaps the greatest creative mind of our time.
He was a true master of cinema. I was looking for his film "Inland Empire", wich I never got to see, when I learned of his passing. Very sad news.
My favourites:
1. Mulholland Drive
2. Twin Peaks (season 1 + Fire Walk With Me / NOT season 2 & The Return)
3. Lost Highway
4. Inland Empire
Lynch is on my Mt Rushmore of directors. So many of his films are in my list of favourite movies. Such an eclectic artist. Imagine the same guy directing The Elephant Man, Dune, The Straight Story and Twin Peaks? Legend.
David Lynch always struck me as a very sincere and genuine person that has such brilliant creative mind.
One of the most unique film makers.
My favourite
Just recently finished Twin Peaks and it was amazing! Sad to hear Lynch is gone now. RIP Gordon Cole
R.I.P such a sad day man.

Start with Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway. Those are his most accessible, but still Lynch movies.
@harrisd1983 Thx Ya!
Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway are my favorite films by him but yes, Peaks, all day, all night, all the time.
A true visionary legend. I would've loved to see him direct some of our most talented young actors today like Pattison, Emma Stone, Chalamet, Keogan, Qualley, etc.

I honestly am very new to the filmography of David Lynch but out of the films of his that I have seen. Blue Velvet is my favorite film of his
The Grand Dad I never had...He was the change/zeitgeist in the mid 90's that inspired every form of media since. He was the Isaac Newton of Television since Twin Peaks...
At 78? Wow. He had a great life. RIP.

Amazing he managed to survive and thrive in Hollywood with grace . Thank god he wrapped up twins peaks , on a high . Best tv series !
He was an amazing A-R-T-I-S-T! ! !

Twin Peaks old and new series. Blue Velvet, and the ideas and sound and visuals of Lost Highway.
Twin Peaks my favorite show and Eraserhead. My favorite movie
Everything by David Lynch stands out in some way. R.I.P.
He's rocking back inside our hearts
Rip David we all miss you
One of the more memorable contributions David did that means alot to me was his acting in Lucky. A minor role but his performance in it still sticks with me to this day
Him and Bob Uecker gone on the same day. Tough tough day.
RIP
Lynch is my second favorite director of all time. Only behind Hitchcock.
Fun fact: He was the first person George Lucas offered the director job to for Return of the Jedi. Lynch turned down the job because he wasn't a fan of Star Wars, and he wanted to do Dune.
RIP to one of humanity's treasures.
The Elephant Man is a masterpiece.
I had always hoped that the alchemy of caffeine and nicotine was going to make him immortal. 😢
Falling. A true Twin Peaks Fan Will Understand
Blue Velvet is not getting enough love here. I absolutely love Blue Velvet.
My favorite movie of his was his G rated Disney movie "The Straight Story" with Richard Farnsworth.
This is the correct answer, to me.

Lost highway ❤
today sucks thats true, david lynch out of all artists, the best ❤
I havent amounted to anything in my life when it comes to the arts, and while it may not seem like it, this artist had a beyond outstanding influence on my interpretation and subconscious translations of great art and culture. This news really hits me right in the gut. Rip!!!
I am crying. The end of an era
Lynch was a one of a kind. His movies changed my life and perspective on cinema.
😔 Followed his weather reports on YT for a while. Loved that man so much.
Rey had nothing to say. Gee. What a shock.
Nepotism at its finest.
In the Town where Twin Peaks was filmed there’s a small memorial in front of Twede’s Cafe.
Rip David Lynch
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi commented, "When life leaves the body, it is the breath leaving, like transcending. For one who has been accustomed to this experience for many years, the transition is easy, painless, and blissful, not catastrophic. Dropping the body is like letting a bird out of its cage.”
It started with Eraserhead then somewhere in between I went on a Twin Peaks binge and in the end it was The Straight Story.

I love the Dune movie. I am going to watch it tonight to celebrate his memory.
He's my cinematic hero. Inspires my reflection of consciousness everyday. ICON
