It is absolutely brilliant, the lines, the stories, the characters - Andy & Lance, Becky, Terry & Sheila, the group - Russell, Hugh, OMG - I love them with all of my heart. Perfect song for a perfect series. Kinda makes you want to be in a quiet old English village on a warm summer day sat outside of a good real ale pub slowly downing a pint of best bitter. Bliss.
Couldn't be more perfect. I loved the programme. I love the song. It evokes in me sadness, nostalgia, longing and grief for times past. So, so beautiful
I put off watching Detectorists for ages,no particular reason I just didn’t get around to it but when I did my God have I fallen in love with it,head over heels and completely besotted,Mackenzie Crook called the program a love song to the English countryside and to people and their pastimes, what beautiful words so if you haven’t seen it do yourself a massive favour and give it a watch.❤
Same here; had never heard of it and started watching it last night with my daughter. Couldn’t stop. So beautifully filmed. Definitely a tribute to the English countryside. And the theme song is just something else. I just love it all. Can’t wait to start series 3 tomorrow ❤
From an actual detectorist viewpoint , this song perfectly portrays the emotions of being there alone , in the middle of a 40acre field/pasture , hearing that birdsong , searching through the briar and bramble , waiting for 'you' ( the magical sound of a target ) ....... 🎵 will you be my treasure?🎵.
Someone mentioned that when people try to cover the song they usually get some of the lyrics wrong. I noticed that the captioning gets some wrong, so that can't be helping! 😂
best show ever. myself and my partner and our 3 small children bonded over this show and the music. my daughter can sing this song pitch perfect and shes 5. melts my heart. i have so much admiration for every person involved in the process of this show and this gorgeous soundtrack.
As a viewer from across the pond, I have to say, The Detectorists is one of the best shows I've ever watched, both on American and British tv. I do not understand why it ended after only three seasons. Can anyone in the UK enlighten me? I love it so much I rewatch it all the time. What a talent in Mackenzie Crook.
in the UK, our best comedies only ran for a few series, so they dont go stale and people begin to hate them. Look at fawlty towers (only 13 episodes i believe), the UK office (couple of series and xmas special). I much prefer it, instead of pumping out episode after episode, the show retains that special quality.
End the show with the audience wanting more, ... like George Best, Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe & Elvis .... The Detectorists have left the Building 🙁
Isn't it just , absolutely love it . Apart from the series there is a 75 minute special which was absolutely brilliant that aired on the BBC in December 2022 , just in case you never saw that one :)
I've really enjoyed reading other comments on this one that have also been captured by the same feelings of nostalgia, melancholy, beauty that this song and series evoke. As i described the series to a friend "it has made me feel home sick for a place ive never been." A wonderful series

My brother and I were Civil War relic hunters all through the 1960s and 1970 here in North Carolina. The "Detectorists" BBC series and this song have strung a chord in my heart as nothing has in many years. Thank you, Johnny Flynn, for transporting me back through the years.
there were battles from the Revolution and Civil wars in North Carolina.. The battle of Bentonville NC was the largest land battle in North Carolina during the Civil War. It involved around 60-80 thousand troops, the battle last 3 days. and covered an area 6,000 acres.
Hundreds of buttons... both Union and Confederate. Thousands of rounds of ammunition... almost exclusively around Goldsboro, North Carolina, which was a major rail function in the state, and also where General Sherman refitted after the Battle of Bentonville. All told, that is the reason we found so much material from both sides. My wife laughed and laughed about the boring "Button Talk" from the first episode of the series.
I'm nearly 60 and I have watched hundreds of British sit coms in my time. The Detectorists show, together with this wonderful theme tune, is my current no 1 of all time. Lyrics to the song
Will you search through the loamy earth for me
Climb through the briar and bramble
I'll be your treasure
I felt the touch of the kings and the breath of the wind
I knew the call of all the song birds
They sang all the wrong words
I'm waiting for you, I'm waiting for you
(Mmmmmm)
Will you swim through the briny sea for me
Roll along the ocean's floor
I'll be your treasure
I'm with the ghosts of the men who can never sing again
There's a place follow me
Where a love lost at sea
Is waiting for you
Is waiting for you
Thank you! 🙂
it's definitely "lonely" not loamy
