  • BMW recently unveiled the all new G42 M240i, which marks the start of a new generation of 2er. Enthusiasts hold onto the 2 series dearly due to its sporty design, smaller proportions, & shorter wheelbase. Has this new design hit the mark, I guess time will tell. No design is ever completely perfect. Everyone is a critic and we are all bursting at the seams with opinions based on preconceived notions, personalities, region, hatred, brand loyalty, and economics.
I’m not a BMW fanboy, although I have owned BMWs in the past. The G42 is far more than the sum of its parts. While some may not care for certain design elements, this design works overall for me. It embodies certain elements from several iconic BMW models. It’s brutish and muscular yet classy and beautiful. It’s quite sporty while comfortable and refined. It’s impossible to please everyone and haters are going to hate everything.
I put my money where my mouth is and purchased a 2023 LCI G42 in Brooklyn Gray over a Cognac interior. Splendid job, BMW!

Owned classic E9 1974 3.0 CSA, this is the ONLY vehicle on the market that can be compared to it, 3 box I6 GT coupe. Trolls comparing it to other brands obviously haven't driven it, who else is producing almost 400 bhp. turbo I6 unicorn? NO ONE! Weight also irrelevant as larger, auto., awd, platform does 0-60 in almost 4 secs., stop typing from the past as BMW go forward.

The single headline design is an homage to the 2002 so while I'd also prefer angel eyes, I personally can accept the omission. The headlights kind of remind me of the E60 tbh. Overall I don't find the car beautiful but interesting to look at if that makes sense, so I'd buy one if I had the money lol. Biggest offender to me is definitely the rear (like most people), aside from the slightly awkward taillights, the raised trunklid (with perhaps the spoiler as an additional factor) kind of looks like the bangle butt. Still, even though I don't find the rear objectively beautiful, it still looks fresh + interesting to me and that's honestly enough since this is prolly going to be the last pure ICE small 2-door RWD coupe we're gonna get (not to mention how much worse it COULD have been, LOL). Always interesting to hear your thoughts!

Hey at least they didn't ruin the front in with hideous grill from 3/4 series. Pros: perhaps better drivering dynamic, little faster 0-60 with hr/tourqe incearse.
Cons: exterior design is mixed bag, m240i will be awd only, maybe 150-250 lb weight gain, slightly bigger car.

    • @SimplyCarThings

Over all I agree with all that you've said here. I to feel that the rear is the only part of this vehicle that's problematic from a design stand point. I certainly welcome the power and
the smooth torque curve. I'm looking forward to having a go... also think its going to look really
good with a slight drop and some spacers, mostly as a result of those fenders. Keep up the good work, I always appreciate your perspective.

Not bad. Overall proportions are good. My issue is the business caused by too many creases across the body. The most unfortunate design elements are the front triangular intakes. They are not "form-follows-function" but overly styled appendages. The later LCI hopefully will clean some of that stuff up.

About the frontend the headlights resembels the 2002 turbo in terms of singularity but the front bumper is a liiiiittle bit busy but I have no problem with it. The side profile looks mean and muscular which is great. The rear lights if the were stretched a little bit with replacing that black piece in the inner side of it with the brakes light it'd look absolutly gorgeous. As a verdict in my humble opinion the car is refreshing and reassuring because in last few years loving bmws was like holding to a burning coal

The triangles in front make it look Hyundaish. I think they design lower end cars to look a bit “weak” intentionally. Similarly in approach to the B5 S4 I owned, strong front, weak back, they left stronger all around design for higher end. I think all manufacturers do this, cheaper looks “cheaper” to differentiate with more higher end options.

    • @SimplyCarThings

Most definitely, I think the styling is intentional. However I don't think this 2 series has a "cheap" or lesser look to it

  • @8teate
    @8teate 3 года назад

Definitely not a very beautiful compact BMW. The car has gotten too disproportionate. The bonnet is too long for its total size. Not to mention the lack in design language. Just look at the lines in the front bumper, side skirts and backlights. You will loose track in an instant within this chaos. Nonetheless I think I will end up buying one in a dark color to hide these flaws.
I guess I am just getting more mature like the car itself ( I see the starting target group as 30-40 yrs). Not as exciting any longer, but still going steady with better ride comfort and technological advancements.
I think a lot of people on the 2addicts forum are actually trying to justify the design. But let’s be real here. There’s no longer a good alternative either compared to other models or brands within the same price range.
We just stick with the 2 series range as we would stick with our loyal girlfriends who become older and who are showing their first signs of disproportionate dimensions. Perhaps wiser but slowly starting to decay. Something to accept. The love will still continue.

@@SimplyCarThings So as much as I like the current M2, I've never really liked the rear end styling. It looks great from the front, decent from the side profile, and not so great from the rear. The taillight design, specifically, just never really did anything for me. Now with this new design, I think the front looks good (but I do wish they would have kept a four headlight design with some sort of angel eye look) and I absolutely love the side profile design. But again, I find the rear view as the weakest in terms of design/styling. I wish the didn't go with that weird kinked LED look. And the taillight housings somehow look tacked on rather than nicely integrated. But overall, I still find it an improvement over the current cars. I really think the M2 is going to look fantastic. And since it's the only way you can get a manual transmission, that's really the only version of the car that interests me.

The g42 m240i rear tail lights are a nice change. Its a reverse style of the headlights and its not 'blocky', but more 3D polygon like. Also the car is just a welcomed change overall. Much nicer updated interior, longer wheel base for more compliant ride quality, and the best b58 i6 to date before we go complete electric in near future. Engineer wise, the g's are superior to their predecessors suspension wise. Its rear wheel drive bias awd platform on the newer CLAR platform. The thundernight purple is great to see too. A radical press release color change that is only offered out of the new upgraded plant in Mexico for specifically the 2 series. I thought the f22 was meh.. and couldnt get my self to let go of my e82 during its reign. The f87 is still special tho and I would still consider one of those beauts. The new g m2 will be jesus 🙌 🙏 just ..like my...opinion, man.

Your comment on the “feminine “ look of the f22 2 series kind of hurts, because it’s true. I have to agree that it does look a bit too narrow, and lacks some aggressiveness. I like the design, you have nailed exactly how I feel about it, but I’ve only just purchased an f22 lci2 m240i and absolutely love it, so I won’t be changing anytime soon. I’ll see how I feel about it in the next 3-4 years, but by then I’m hoping to be going full m car territory. I suppose it all hinges on how the whole electric car scene goes over those years to, with the governments seemingly pressing is all to go that route. With the likes of Audi stating that they will only be making electric going forward, it’s only a matter of time before the rest follow I reckon. So I could possibly be keeping this f22 as a memento to the end of the era 🙁😢

I’d say with cars it’s the opposite lol, wider fenders and body panels equate to a more aggressive looking car pretty much 100% of the time. You can’t really compare the design of an inanimate object like a car to a human

I really feel like BMW is destroying their identity.

I like all the ugly designs from BMW except for the SUVs but then again all SUVs no matter which marque are crap, marketing led design for unimaginative people!

BMW designers need to be fired. Literally since the new designs of the m3/m4 surfaced, instantly turned me into Benz/Audi fan. I was a huge bmw fan boy, I owned own, nice fun sporty car.. but looks are very important to me with vehicles. Obviously performance too but you must must have the “look”. And so far it’s Audi and Benz for looks right now. They make beautiful machines.

BMW is going downhill in my opinion. I’m switching to Mercedes for my next car. Way better interior / styling

Funny, BMW outsold Mercedes for the 1st time when current design chief did Bangle butt 745i, since then he has doubled their volume on neu X crossovers. BMW are so going downhill that world's largest truck manufacturer have announced they are segregating Mercedes in an effort to chase BMW upmarket. Anything you think you know about BMW is about to change as they half ICE production in favor of announced 25 neu EV, hate on this as much as you like, just means you will miss out on last ICE M2 (which Mercedes can't compete with because they have already announced next C AMG will be 4 cyl.).
