Freddie was a huge opera fan and he fell in love with Montserrat's voice very quickly.
This was the first crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva in the history. Montserrat mentioned it was a great service towards the people who never listend to opera before, because their collaboration has definitely increased the popularity of this genre. Pls, check out The Golden Boy at La Nit 88. that's another lovely preformence of these 2 great artists, you will love it!

This video clip I believe was shot during the first performances of this legendary duet at the prestigious "Ku Club" on the island of Ibiza in 1987. Prior to this, the idea of collaboration between Freddie Mercury, a global "rock" Superstar and Montserrat Caballe, considred by many to be the best Operatic Soprano ever, was treated with scepticism and derision, by the public when first mooted. Luciano Pavarotti who had performed with Montserrat, in 1983 at Covent Garden Opera House in London, where Freddie first heard her, even went so far as to accuse her of betraying her operatic heritage. Yet despite all the adverse comments fortunately the duo were steadfast and determined to proceed with their project. Freddie composed this powerful duet with his musical maestro Mike Moran as a tribute and homage to the legendary Opera Diva(I use the term in the original sense here). The three main reasons behind the piece were that Montserrat Caballe was born in Barcelona, lived there most of her life and it was the venue for hers' and Freddies' first actual meeting which, soon developed into a deep and devoted friendship, which was to last the rest of their lives.
Their very first performance in Ibiza, was greeted with instant, wild rapturous acclaim. Freddie and Montserrat Caballe had achieved the seemingly impossible, combining rock and opera for the very first time ever, in an amazing duet. They had not just succeeded, they had superceded, even the most optimistic hopes and decisively silenced their detractors forever. Subsequently, The Duet was to become the main focus of the successful bid by Barcelona to host the Summer Olympics in 1992.
Freddie once told Montserrat taking both her hands in his, in answer to silence doubts she had mentioned, "Why doi you want to sing with me....? I am Old...I am Fat....."
"Montsy"(which he callled her affectionately) ..You Are Music...and Music knows no Age"..
How true that seems, even now 37 YEARS after the first public airing of this Triumphant Anthem.
Fortunately, although both are now sadly deceased, thankfully owing to technology, we can still enjoy and even thrill to, this ground-breaking masterpiece. Music truly does live through the ages....
    " VIVA, BARCELONA..!!!"

You should hear the demo he sent Montserrat when he wanted to do this opera collaboration with her. He absolutely adored her, matter of fact in this song that part where he says "The moment you stepped into the room, you took my breath away" he was singing about the first time he ever saw her. The demo is on youtube and it's called "Exercise in Free Love" Some people that listen to it, mistakenly think it's Montserrat singing the notes while Freddie is playing the piano, but in actuality, it's ALL Freddie, this was done before he sang with her. It's what she listened to judge his talent as an operatic singer, and to do the collaboration of the Barcelona album. He blew her mind away, she said the way he could move in and out of registers so effortlessly was amazing. He could jump from the bottom of the keyboard to almost the top without working his way up to it. The two ended up adoring one another...lol She loved him just as much :) If you look for it on youtube, I usually listen to the one where it's just a picture of him sitting down looking at the camera, for me so far it's the clearest. There are no words, just piano and notes, but I promise it will be one of the most beautiful things you'll ever hear, it's like an Angel singing. Actually I'll put the link here if anyone else is interested that has not heard it yet. ruclips.net/video/qkuBUWykrIU/видео.html It will blow your mind that these high notes are him, and every now and then he'll come back down just for a second, just enough for you to hear the Rocker Freddie, but moves quickly back up.

How good he was, remember song" Under pressure," with late David Bowie, they never sang it live, because he would " blow," Bowie away. So,no more such talent as Freddie was.Sad thing is he could' ve been alive, but he stoped taking medicine him self, and died.

Both gone and I cry every time I watch this. Beautiful song and beautiful unlikely friendship between these two. That is what makes me cry. However I know I will continue to watch it. This is what is referred to as bittersweet.
Freddie was taken from us before his time and I have to say if we speak of unique then I believe Freddie was truly unique. I remember at the time I heard of his death I thought oh no as I think if he had continued he would have continued to surprise and enthrall us.

Later, the whole album was re-recorded using the orchestra which was used during the "We will rock you" musical.

This song is a prime example of the disservice that most radio stations do to their audience by playing only their restricted playlist of their restricted genres. No 'Rock ' station would play this, No 'Classical ' station would play this, as for most of the other stations they are bound by their sponsors playlists. Luckily in the UK we have the often criticised BBC , which will play a whole range of genres on its several platforms and allow everyone to hear a wide range of music styles.

If you enjoyed this video with this song that was used in the Opening Ceremony of the Barcelona 92 Olympic Games, you should check out the performance of Sarah Brightman and José Carreras, in the closing ceremony of those same Olympic Games, singing "Amigos forever", which is as spectacular as this Mercury/Caballé song: ruclips.net/video/OmUS9vu-O1s/видео.html

I read that they wanted to do The Phantom of the Opera together, but he ran out of time before their schedules cleared for it.
Perhaps in some alternate universe they figured out a workable HIV cocktail just a little faster and they got to do that one.
