Having owned manual transmission cars for over 50 years, I can answer absolutely, yes. No question some steering feel is lost w/o rack & pinion steering. Simply goes with the electronic reality. The car simply doesn't need gears, although a highway overdrive might extend range. Using brake regeneration - B mode - for one pedal driving yields the same feeling of oneness that you get in a manual. Handling in the BMW autocross was superb. In a few years when a "bespoke" model comes out & battery tech advances, the next generation will be 500+ pounds lighter and even better.
It’s a pity that the i8 was canned so soon, I really would have loved to see this drivetrain in that as opposed to what was in there since it would look like the future and also have the tech to boot. To prove that you can’t please everyone, I feel this one could do with more visual interest given the quantum leap from the ICE.
Go and check Rich Rebuilds on RUclips and see the struggles he has with his i8 and dealerships are refusing to fix his car because it’s costly and I think “over engineered” or something like that.
Beautiful car, great review and camera work... But just where is that road? Beautiful scenery. Someone, let me know, I want to go and take a drive there??
I will stick to a Parallel Hybrid. If BMW Reliability and Resale are Poor as it is with Fully Blown Internal Combustion Engine, Imagine the Sell-By on these Electric Computers. Great Vid.
The problem with electric cars is the prices and lack of engine noise (load shedding of course) but apart from that, good cars and good for the environment.

Nice. What about service plans, warranty information and how frequent software upgrades would be done. Are those options BMW work into their EV ranges?
I imagine the way we handle mileage will change. I don’t think most will drive their EV to near empty as we do with ICE vehicles. You could plug-in your vehicle every night (even if not necessary) and perhaps never actually have the battery below 30%-50%. Perhaps you plug-in at your destination too.
Good review. I don't know if we will ever get the feeling of commotion engine powered car from electric vehicle partly because we talking different technology all together. Even the great car manufactures will struggle to infuse their identity in the current and future era of automotive industry. Maybe we the consumers may have to adjust.
It won't last 10 years. EVs don't last long-term nearly as long as petrol cars because batteries permanently expire. It'll probably only last you 5 years until you need a battery replacement, at which point it's cheaper to buy a brand new car.
BMW offers an 8 year warranty on their batteries in most markets. After 8 years ANY BMW is worthless. Ask me, I have sold a 6 year old 330d F30. BMW not even intersted to make an offer on their own cars once they are out of warranty.
Yes. Electric version has less parts to maintain and less parts to end up being broken especially by the engine. You do also save alot on brakes if you use One pedal driving allowing your brakes to fade slower compared to a petrol car. Plus the obvious is that its costs less to refill since electricity is cheaper and more accessible than petrol and also the car can bring back more charge when braking or going downhill when your not accelerating
@@CiroDeSiena I live in Boskruin Jhb ... been sitting , without electricity for three days 😬 How does these cars benefit Joe Average... I don't think my tiny little inverter going to charge this sucker 🤔

@@raaz1zn Yes that is a good point. In a shorter video like this its' difficult to cover all the nuances. I think I should have said that it's better for the battery to charge to 80%, and then it should charge at the full 150kW. I think in the relatively short term we will see a big shake up of the EV market in SA. They are definitely way to expensive for the average South African motorist but I think (and hope!) that that will change.
I guess you figured that few people who watch your video will ever drive this car so you can just say whatever. The rear seat space is not great according to Munro, the boot is a small 10 cubic meters, just over half what a Model 3 has, and the handling sucks. Cannot wait for the Moose Test with the M50, the 40 failed spectacularly, taking out cones on each side of the track.
Where do you get your info from? The i4 has 470l in the boot, vs 425l in TM3. With 10 cubic meters it would be a small van.. Have you driven the i4? Get serious, fanboy.
M440i XDrive please, at R1,3mil. Not only has it quick refuel times, and sounds a million times better (the i4 sounds terrible), you'll still get a decent trade-in value after a while. (EV's depreciate faster than ICE)
What I would love to see is seeing you charge on those 50-150kW chargers because people think there are no chargers at all in SA. Please next time do some charging experience in SA, maybe drive from JHB to CPT or Polokwane to CPT just to show that it is possible, not just saying it. And I wonder why BMW didn’t give us i4 eDrive40 since it has better range especially for a market that hasn’t developed yet.
A question about electric vehicles in general, does charging the battery between capacities, affect the battery at all? So charging from 20% to 50%, or 30% to 80% or 55% to 65%?
Ah man I just love how you guys review cars. The camera work, the content and ofcourse a bit of Ciro humour just makes it one of the best on RUclips. Great work guys! One thing I Beleive BMW should have added as a option for this car is to be able to turn off the front motors, so that when traveling on the open road your range could double using only 1 motor, and 200kw is more than enough for the rear motor alone.
When driving in comfort or eco mode it will only use the rear motor, it will only engage the rear motor when using a lot of power. In sport and sport boost it will have both motors engaged
