This is my first video of a playlist about Delicate sound of Thunder songs cover.
I'm a fan of the tone of Gilmour from this live since 9 years. The backing track is the soundboard version of On the Turning Away played by the group (1988-08-21 version). I just modified it in order to put the guitar lower. It's the original version that has been used for the official live DSOT. But this version is longer (some parts in the official version have been splitted).
I used a Fender stratocaster (EMG DG20) and a Hiwatt DR504 replica (a 70's replica). I recorded with a Shure SM58 but I also added the sound of my camera in order to have a tone which is less dry (it recorded the ambient sound in the room where I played).
I didn't add any effects with my PC except en EQ tuned subtly because I didn't use my Boss GE7. Otherwise the sound is basically the same as the one I really had when I recorded (except some stereo settings).
I don't have any tabs for this version, i learnt it by ear. Don't hesitate to leave a comment. Next video will probably be a cover of Sorrow (20th august 1988 version) and Dogs of War.
Awesome playing, hope I can get to play half as good as this one day. One of my favourite solos by far.🤘🤘
That's the sound of the thunder! Nice job
Can I have your backing track?
Thanks man!! The best solo cover of this song. I searched to many time for original delicate sound of thunder version. I ll be copy you 😁😉😊
axilleas aggelos thanks!
Great job, not only in terms of the playing but also accuracy of the tone, sound and feel [with just a backing track]. A fine production and presentation, kudos to you Sir.
It brings a smile to my face how you were able to memorize every note in the uncut solo. Keep it up. :)
Thanks !
@@furywolf29do you have tabs man you nailed it every single trem note even
Excellent just excellent...👍
I would pay a lot of dollars for these tabs
You even used your "fuck off" finger on that two handed G note on 3:30. Mythical cover
Thanks for sharing this, you are amazingly skilled and an inspiration too me.
O cara reproduziu todas as notas da música do disco Delicate Round. Thanks!
Excelente realmente. De donde sacaste el Backing track?
Perfect!
Nice job! U should put the EMGs in then u wouldn’t need all that equipment. Nonetheless great job.
Thanks. I have the EMGs on this video
Very good sound, very good Guitar, very good version , nice !
Really best sound and play
(Bel suono ed esecuzione 🤙🏼Italia)
Backing Track?? Beautiful performance and sound.
Well done. :)
Very nicely done!
Bravissimo, complimenti. First ever Gilmour's solo cover I really enjoyed from the first to the very last note.
Many thanks!
Absolutely Amazing! One of my ATF solos from one of my ATF favorite albums and you nailed it!
Where can one find the soundboard recording? I'd love to hear the raw versions of those tunes?
ruclips.net/video/0ta3x9dElLg/видео.html you can find it here. And on the website « yeeshkuhl »
Very Good
Complimenti, bella esecuzione! Occhio però, se zio David si accorge che hai fatto tapping, ti scomunica ;)
Great Cover of an amazing solo.
As a learning guitarist I would really like to know where you got the backing track so I can try my luck at playing this also.
Nice tone bro!
You can sure play bud I also love Gilmour and that tone. How do you get that high pitched tone when you hit G-string on 2nd fret? At 37 seconds in thats what I'm asking about thanks.
he's using pinch harmonics if u want to learn this heres a video... ruclips.net/video/2ObT1M0uc-o/видео.html
It's not a setting, it's a technique called a pinch harmonic, it takes practice to get good at it.
muy bueno loco, me voló la cabeza
Really nice playing Morgan, superb tone as well. The closest DSOT I’ve ever heard. Please help me - I to have the HM-2, the TC BLD, a Rams Head clone even a Mesa Studio Preamp, but just can’t seem to get as close to the the tone as yourself. What drive pedals are you using? Is the HM-2 into the BLD or the other way around. Or are you using the Muff and BLD or something different like the Metalizer?... Any, and as mush assistance would be very, very much appreciated. Thank you from Aus. Looking forward to Sorrow...
Thanks ! I used the Ram's head and the BLD for this song. Gilmour also may have used sometimes a Boss MZ2... it depends of the song I think. For this version of OTTA, i think that the Ram's head as a more thin and sharp sound than the MZ2.
But the key of the tone is the chorus. Not the Boss CE2 (i didn't use it here) but the TC Stereo chorus. It's about the same as the TC 1210 spatial expander that Gilmour had in its pedalboard. The TC SCF is incredible and when i first used it, the sound was closer than with the CE2. I really think that the TC SCF is an essential pedal of this tone.
Finally i used a TC Nova delay. You have to be careful with the delay unit. The delay must be adjusted substly (In the soundboard, we can't hear a lot of repetition of the note played by Gilmour when there is a break). The key here is to adjust the delay enought to "inflate" the sound, but not too much (in order to avoid to have a sound drowned in the delay). The sound you can hear in the soundboard seems to be almost dry. In fact, there was a lot of reverb in the stadium where Pink Floyd played, so David didn't have to use a lot of delay, but just a little to give strenght to its sound.
Congratulations from Marseille in France 👌
Merci beaucoup!
wow!!!
I think you have it, your playing is absolutely masterful!
Thanks!
Con diferencia el mejor cover que he oido de este tema... Gracias
Wonderful!
Maybe a little bit more reverb in this recording…but really a great tone!
you play vere well
Great job!
Very good
Nailed it
you are very good, congratulations. I'm trying to learn this solo but without tabs it's really hard. I didn't find any sheet music for this live version, could you help me?
I don’t have any tabs sorry!

@@furywolf29 Thanks!!

Thanks so much for sharing such valuable info. I really appreciate how much time and money you’ve invested to get this sound. I’m fairly new to some of this gear and so very glad you didn’t mind giving over some time-saving pointers. I just read your reply after just trying the TC BLD after the HM-2 ...and...bingo, there’s the tone! (I only just got the BLD in the post and hadn’t had a chance to try it out until your clip inspired me to give it a go.) Before this I’d been using the HM-2 into Big Muff - in the ball park yet frustratingly far off. I have a lot of the same gear you have:
Candy apple red Strat dg-20’s, Boss CS-3 compAbsolute Analog Green Russian Tc Electronic BLDSource Audio programable eqMXR Analog chorus (signal splits L&R here)Nova modulatorNova delayTC Electronic Hall of Fame reverb Boss RT-20 (for rotating speaker sim)Fender Hotrod Deluxe (left signal)Fender Deluxe VM (right signal)
Plus a Messa Boogie Studio Preamp and some modulation effects I’m yet to rackcontrolled by a Rack Gizmo:Deluxe Electric MistressBoss CE-2MXR Phase 90 script
Thanks for the tip on delay mix. I agree. I think mine is set to only 17 (mix level) just to thicken, plus some hall reverb on the tc stereo reverb to smooth things out. And I appreciate very much the advice on the TC Chorus. Wow! I would never have considered that, you’ve saved me so much time & frustration! It makes perfect sense when you consider the August 1988 signal chain diagram (Kitrae) shows boss ce-2 in mono - (way too dominating - must have been for ‘Run’) and that the TC 1210 hadn’t been removed from rack yet. That piece of the chorus puzzle now fits - thank you very much Morgan. 1 or 2 more questions, if I may? Big Muff before or after BLD? And what do you think was used for Shine On intro? Love all your vids - quality viewing! Cheers, Ryan.
It's always a pleasure to talk about this period of Gilmour ;) I'm studying this sound since my 15 years old, when i started playing the guitar. At the beginning, I was also using the HM2 with the Big muff. There is another video of On the turning away on my channel which was recorded with these pedals. But the TC BLD is better than the HM2.
The CE2 never convinced me when i played with distortion pedal, but maybe it's because i used it in a single amp. I should try it in mono, but when i tested the TC SCF, it immediately suited with the original sound of DSOT, even in a single amp ! The TC SCF really gives something very similar to the DSOT sound. I bought it in january 2018 and it was a sort of revelation.
About the Boss CE2, there are many possibilities : Gilmour could use it only for his clean sound, when he wanted to have a "spatial" tone (for instance, the four notes of Shine on, or maybe Us and them? Or even on the acoustic guitar on Welcome to the machine, or the rythm part of ABITW... ). Or he could use it with his distortion sound, in mono, with the TC 1210... I should test the CE2 in mono and do some comparisons with the TC SCF..
My big muff is after the TC BLD. For the shine on intro, it's very difficult to know. It can be the clean sound of the guitar (EMG) with only a Boss CS2 and no overdrive pedal... (Gilmour plays very loud so maybe it's enough to have this sound) but I'm not sure. It can also be the CS2 + Mesa boogie Mark I : in fact, for the solo of ABITW (studio version), Gilmour used the Mesa boogie Mark I in order to have a better sound. It's still clean but it has something more powerful with the mesa. So maybe it's the same here...
For DSOT, Gilmour also used the mesa boogie mark III. Unfortunately, i don't have enough money to buy a Mesa boogie, even a Studio preamp (which was used on Knebworth) so I can't test. Maybe the Mark III was used for overdrive tones such as ABITW solo, Dogs of War, or the second solo of Shine on (after the four notes). About this, an interview (which can be read on kitrae) says that the Mesa boogie was used as an overdrive pedal.. Or maybe it was used with the Big muff or MZ2 (that's what's Kitrae thinks if i remember correctly). Or maybe it was used only on the intro of Sorrow, to have a stronger tone... I don't have this amp so it's quite difficult to know. I just can say that, even without the Mesa boogie, i can get a close sound so... BUT there is something to say : in his solos, Gilmour plays a lot of "Harmonics" (or overtone? i don't know how to translate this?). These overtones are sometimes very difficult to do.Maybe it's only the result of a sound which is loud. But maybe it's also the Mesa boogie that gives some gain and helps to have these overtones.
And there is also something we can say : "Signs of Life" was also played by the band in its setlist. This song has a very particular sound of guitar... So maybe one of the mesa boogie was in the pedalboard only to have this particular sound (the sound of the mesa is typically this type of tone).
About the overdrive tone, you can get very close with a TC BLD in disto mod ! there is something in this sound which is very close of the overdrive tone of DSOT. I think the TC BLD can be the key of the overdrive tone. Maybe it was used with the mesa boogie to have a stronger tone.
Hi Morgan. Thanks for the videos. I’m currently using a boss ce2 for all my chorus Gilmour tones but seriously considering the purchase of the tc scf reissue. Could you possibly please tell me about your settings and setup of the scf ? Are you using just the chorus mode?
Obviously the ce2 has its place but I really think that in order to nail the dsot live tones the scf is essential. Gilmour used the 1210 originally and I find that even on kit Rae site there isn’t a lot of information on his modulation from this period.
Thanks
All the best
Joe
Bravo ! Cette version longue est fantastique...
