He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book ruclips.net/user/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide ruclips.net/user/postUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff ... But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!

We had no problems potty training our hound (a Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen bitch). I think the three things that made the largest difference were:
      1. Spending a lot of time outdoors and rewarding her anytime she did her business. We would eat our meals outside and tie her to the table, read books while she slept on a blanket, etc.
      2. Restricting her indoor space (she lived in our small-ish kitchen), and making sure every part of that room was valuable to her (playing, training, feeding in every part of the room and placing water, toys or her bed in spots she might be drawn to). This is a lot like the crate+playpen setup only it was easier to also spend time in her space.
      3. One of us would stay up very late and the other one would wake up early so that we could take her out during the night and early morning as well. I think we took her out every second hour throughout the night for a week or so, after that we could space her nighttime potty breaks out quite quickly as she started to desire to keep her area clean. We did not leave her alone for extended periods during the day before she was very close to being completely potty trained, and when we both had to go to work we had a dog walker take her out in the middle of the day.
      4. We never used puppy pads or newspaper, instead we aimed for never having her go inside the house. Of course she did have a few accidents, which we removed with an enzymatic cleaner and made sure to cover the area with valuable objects. When she was almost potty trained she'd have an accident maybe once a week or once a month for about half a year, we just made sure to clean well and be extra careful about taking her out during the following days, and her accident rate would drop steadily so we knew she was on the right track.
      5. As we introduced her to new rooms in the house and took her to new places we were very careful to make sure she had just done her business and we loaded these new areas with value by feeding, playing and training for a short while and the taking her out again.
It was A LOT of work during the first month, but all that dedication quickly payed dividends in that her accident rate dropped very consistently, and compared to puppies of the same age that we met she improved quite quickly as well. Our hound now has a desire to keep all indoor areas clean and at 15 months we feel completely confident she would never soil an indoor space.

    • @emmamemma4162
      @emmamemma4162 3 года назад +2

@@elisabethunderwood716 Also, NO FREE FEEDING! Make a mealtime/potty break schedule and try to figure out how long it takes for a meal to become a bowel movement (it should be about 12 hours for an older puppy, at only 3 months it might be a bit difficult to tell since he probably has more than two meals a day). Playtime and treat training will also affect their potty schedule.
Since you have a male puppy, be careful he does not start marking indoors. Preventing indoor marking is a bit different to potty training, so that's something to read up on once he starts approaching sexual maturity.

Emma Blomqvist thank you!! This is great to hear. My hound was doing great with potty training he keeps his play pen clean, and barks to go outside for his business, but recently he began to poop on our living room carpet something he never did before. He’s done it every day this week even as I’m watching over him like a hawk. When it happens I pick him up mid poop and take him outside. I think I will try your (5.) introducing him to new rooms slowly. Thanks again 👍🏻🙂🙂

I have a new puppy that is also a new breed to me. He's a rescue, but I got him early at 4 months old, 2 weeks ago. The breed I'm 95% sure he is is a Dutch Shepherd. He's super smart. My Pitbull-German Shepherd puppy is 13 weeks old now. I'm potty training him an alternate way -- I built two exercise pens together with a crate in the front yard. He gets to play in there and have plentiful potty breaks whenever he wants. I work from home in the living room and monitor him thru the window. I can praise him every time I see him go, and it provides much less opportunities for accidents in the house. I've been able to gradually increase his time in the house, monitoring him closely. I prefer to bring him in the house for playtime right after he has gone #1 and #2 for lowest risk of accidents. Then we can play together or he hangs out with a chew stick and learns how we behave in the house. I love your "Settle" training and I incorporate that a lot in my training! I praise and reward him for calm behavior as much as possible.

I really like having them at night because she still usually goes at least once during the night. I live in an apartment so it's also nice to have them when it's raining and stuff. Do I need to phase them out? I hear a lot of people say that it slows down potty training, but she doesnt really have accidents in the apartment anymore (except when she misses the mat!). I just don't really see a lot of people who continue using the pads after the first few months.

I just got my puppy 2 days ago. He is 8 weeks old and he doesn’t like going outside. I’ve tried to walk him for 30 minutes to an hour right after feeding and he will hold it until he gets inside 😫

My 3 months border collie does the same, last night he just hold it for 3 hours, he is always distracted by noises, people or stuff he finds in the street.

Sounds like maybe you're taking them to places with too much stimulation. You need to find a quiet place outside where there aren't a lot of distractions for them to go.
The time when they need to go the most is right after waking up, not right after eating. It takes a while to process the food.

@@imnotmike lol...just got a pup. She will pee and poo right before she eats andpee and poo again right after she eats. She will pee immediately after she drinks a bit of water or if she has been playing or sleeping. I have a multi-level home. 😰 I'm certainly going to get more exercise running up and down the stairs with this pooch.

My 4 month old lab does the same thing!!!! He will pee something but not like how he should and I don't think he has ever went poop outside. The second we come in the house he will pee and poop😭 Someone please help!!! I have a crate but I haven't tried it, I don't know much about them, I'm sure he will cry in there. He's so spoiled, he can't climb onto our bed so we have to help him up. I think I'm going to have to start cracking down on a strict schedule. I'm getting so tired of picking up his poo ugh He's growing so fast and the piles are growing even faster lol #Help!!!

you should make a program that shows you each video to watch depending on the puppys age. And a schedule that tells you when to have them take naps be feed. And how much to feed them as they get older.

I love your videos, they are super helpful and I enjoy your enthusiastic energy. I have a lot to learn and you are helping me with that. Thank you!
Today I came home after having my puppy be alone for the first time for almost 3 hours. I was suprised to see she did not pee or poop inside. As soon as I came home I took her outside for about 10min, but she didn’t do anything, I feel like she’s scared outside, she just wants to go back inside and keeps pulling towards the house. We are back in for about a minute and I hear her peeing! Once I cleaned it and was washing my hands I come back and I smell poop...she pooped at the same spot I just cleaned 😅

Zak, thanks for all these amazing videos, they are tons of help! We have a 17 week old englsih cocker spaniel. she is doing great potty training wise, but she still wakes up twice in the middle of the night to be let outside, usually at around 12-1 and 5-6 am. Did I do something wrong or is it normal for her to still wake up once or twice? I never used the pads in our house, i watched her like a hawk during the day and took her out as much as possible and praised her when she did it outside.any tip would be really appreciated, thanks so much

Love all your videos Zak, Molly is loving life on our farm. She is my Old English Sheepdog and is 3 months old. We crate trained her and she won’t go in the crate but she’ll still wee wee whenever she wants indoors. She is also very nippy and has attitude. Any tips? I’ll just keep at it. Keep up the great tutorials. :)

You need to introduce her to every room in the house so that she learns to keep that space clean. First take her out, when she has gone potty take her to the room you want to introduce (preferably on leash) and do some playing and treat training for 5-10 minutes. Then take her out or to her crate. Repeat several times in all areas of the room. It's also a good idea to put dog beds, water bowls, treats and toys in any area she is especially "drawn" to. The idea is to make these rooms valuable to her so that she does not want to soil them.
In areas where you think she has already peed, use an enzymatic cleaner to get the smell out (normal cleaners will not get all the smell out and her sensitive nose will tell her "this is a good place to go").

Great video. Very helpful with our new puppy. We have a 3 year old dog that ONLY goes in her spot in our backyard. How can I train her to go in a new area? For example, we rented a cabin this past weekend and would have loved to give her a command to get her to go potty instead of holding it for almost a day like she did.

I have a Samoyed puppy which is 6 months and he is having a lot of troubles with, 1) excitement urinating. 2) table/counter surfing. 3) Crate trading. (We watched Zaks videos all the time about crate training and we did crate training drills 7 times a day with at least 45 minutes or 20 minutes. We crate trained him since around the second or first week of having him, the first few night, when the crate didn’t come in yet, we had him sleep in a small square shaped baby gated area.) 4) leash training. ( he also tends not to listen very well and when he sees dogs he either cries or tugs). 5) My cousins have 2 Shiz Tzus and he tends to be more rough against them. (He is often okay-ish) with dogs but with some mostly smaller dogs he is more rough but with bigger dogs he is either scared, antsy, jumpy or barking I don’t know whether or not he is being mean to them though.
If anyone has any answers it would help greatly! I knew Samoyeds were stubborn be he seems very stubborn because he had slept in his crate for basically 6 months already and still hates it.

Hi Zak! Love your videos! I am getting a puppy very soon and I am so excited to use these videos and Pupford for training.
I have a question though: my puppy is in my hometown which is 6 hours away from where I currently live. Should I bring him to home as soon as possible? Or would it be ok for us to stay at my moms house for a week?
I am scared to make him more confused by letting him adjust for a week and then moving again....

Zak, can you please help with a video explains what to train your dog and when? So not to overwhelm the puppy? Maybe you already have one? I have been watching inertia’s training from the start and this somewhat answers my question but would be great to have video with a breakdown by week... 8, 12... milestones etc

I swear Zak, you are the only North American trainer I've found so far to even consider the idea that your viewers may live in a high rise apartment building with no quick direct access to a lovely lush backyard. I live in an apartment on the 6th floor, and it takes me a good couple of minutes to take my puppy out, so I'm always a little frustrated with how backyard owners make potty training look so easy - just pick them up before they get the opportunity to go and rush them outside... Easier said than done!
My puppy was using padded mats for the first two weeks (took to them quickly), but then my local trainer insisted I get rid of them and focus on teaching her to solely go outside. She's been having accidents ever since. Should I just go back to using mats? 🥺
Thanks for your videos, love your style.

Great video. I’m trying to train kids as much as the puppy, and they are as bad as the puppy at waiting till the last minute before going to the bathroom. So of course the puppy has lots of accidents when she’s with them. We are going on a sailboat soon and wondering if you had any specific advice for keeping a puppy on a boat? We will take the potty pads to put out on the deck at potty time.

Hi, I'm about to get a Sataffordshire Bull Terrier puppy (Thor) in the next few days and was thinking on taking your videos as a guidanceto be able to have a good behaving dog when he grows up. I've been wondering though, how much time did you spend daily training Inertia when she esa a pupp? and how much time did playing take of her day? Cause all the reference I get from your dog training experience videos are the educating moments and would like to know what is a good balance between both. Thanks for your videos!

Hi Zak, thanks for sharing your amazing videos. I have a question. I've been told to keep my puppy on the same diet used by the breeder for two weeks (Purina chicken and rice) after picking her up, however, I'm also hearing about training using treats. I need to potty train, crate train, and leash train my dog asap. So, should I use treats? Will they mess my puppy's digestive process? Thanks for your help.
