    TRIP STATS
    ----------
    Day 1 - 8.4 miles / 2,094' Gained
    Day 2 - 14.9 miles / 3,286' Gained
    Trip Total 23.30 miles / 5,380' Gained
    This trip is an overnight in the Big Indian Wilderness area of the Catskills in New York. My initial plan was to head towards Mongaup Pond to setup camp and get used to shooting with my new camera. All was going according to plan until I decided to head out on day 2.
    On my GPS there was a 4x4 road that didn't appear on my paper map. 0.4 miles away, however, was a road that looked very similar to the 4x4 road showing on my GPS, even terminating further North of my position in the same fashion. I thought I had gone 0.4 miles to far and it turned out that I was 0.4 miles short of the junction. Unfortunately I made the decision to switch backpacks 2 hours before I got on the road so the compass I could have used to help out wasn't with me. The best course of action was to backtrack to the pond and head out the same way I came in.
    Even with the extra miles this added the trip was still fantastic and the pond was absolutely beautiful. It doesn't appear in the video but the pond continues from the area I was in so there is still a lot of exploration to be done here. Now that I've learned the area better I can eventually do the loop I wanted. There are plenty of other trails in the area so there is no doubt I'll be returning in the future.
    Safe travels all and thanks for stopping by to check out the video!

    Great video, good quality, My suggestion going forward which will help us follow along is to name the ponds, and trails you pass or travel on.

      Thanks for checking the video out and also thanks for the suggestion! I do get lazy sometimes and forget to actually include the useful information. I'll definitely keep it in mind moving forward.

    Awesome ! Your going to love that Canon SL2 ! A lot to learn for sure. Nice hike, that sure sounded like a bald eagle. Thanks for sharing my friend ! Cheers!

      No doubt a lot to learn. The last camera I used that was remotely like this one was back in the 90's! I really wish I had gotten the eagles on camera but now that I know I can find them there I'll be heading back and setting up shop to wait for them.

    Hey, I know this is a couple years old now, but nice job & much appreciated. Read thru some comments & appreciate the honesty about depression. Same here. A good, healthy thing to do.i went to the woods to live deliberately... (or walk around for awhile anyway,lol)

    Nice bridge in the start. I like this area so far, private, and to yourself. I don't like camp sites with a bunch of people.. Thanks for inviting us..cheers . Hope your camera is cool

      Considering how popular this area is in the Summer months, yes, you can still get that secluded feel to your hike. People usually spread out nicely back there. Sorry it took a few days to get back. The camera is in a good spot now (I replaced it) and I made sure I bought the lens protector for it this time.

    Maybe it didn't turn out like you planned but you still got out there! My current situation is a lot different. My fiance is 30 weeks pregnant with my son. No backpacking for me this year. Thanks for the video and keep them coming. Hopefully I will be making new videos soon with my son Kaysen!

    Stumbled across this video while looking for info on the NY area and primitive camping. Nice video and hope you’re feeling better.
    Was that Mongaup Pond you were at?

      Thank you for checking the video out, I really appreciate it! Yup, that was Mongaup Pond. From where I was there are campsites across the pond but I think they are drive-in sites. Very nice area back there, I was hoping to get back this year but that didn't materialize. Be good!

    Hike in 4 miles to the pond only to find a road that gives easy access to all the campsites. Been there done that lol

    great video, thanks for sharing. Quick couple of questions. Approximately how heavy was your backpack? And how many total miles did you hike within the 2 days?

    • @capsoutdoors
      @capsoutdoors  4 года назад

      Hey ML, thanks for stopping by and checking it out. Much appreciate the sub as well! My total weight on this trip was, I believe, 24lbs. I usually don't keep track of my weight but I'll start writing it down in the event I'm asked again. I always shoot for about a 12-15 base weight and just let it build from there. As for mileage, I did a little over 23 miles over the 2 days.

      I definitely had some reservations on staying there and usually don't like camping in bad spots but I now know for the next time much better spots to camp (like at the actual campground). I'm sure if I threw a few bucks at someone I could have setup on the fringes of their site. It was late though, was tired, and just wanted to eat.

      Sorry for the delayed response. I stayed at a site on Beecher Lake (42° 2'33.96"N 74°37'51.55"W). I thought I'd get a lot of noise from the campground but it was surprisingly peaceful there.

    Narration a little matter of fact, no sence of awe, or lightness...and seemed not to have really enjoyed himself when back in the jeep...his screw up, etc. No sense of how he really felt. Explanations of how you packed...not interesting enough...but a wonderful place to go. I know what I miss, a sense of the hiker enjoying himself out there alone.

    • @capsoutdoors
      @capsoutdoors  3 года назад +1

      You're definitely in the right to voice your opinion and I'll agree with you on a lot of what you said. One thing to take into consideration though is the person themselves, and what they may be going through in life. Yup, I went out and filmed a trip while going through a bout of depression, yes I maybe didn't enjoy myself as much as I should have, and yes it no doubt showed in the final product. I went back and forth on whether to post it at all when I watched it back but decided to do it anyway.
      Thanks for the comment! You should watch a few of my more recent trips, I think the positivity you're looking for definitely shines through in those more.

      @@capsoutdoors Thanks for the response. I understand the pushing through when down...don't have solutions...perhaps an experiement...if I were feeling better, what would I sound like...sometimes starting with an " s if" premise, like in acting...it takes you to a different place. Self assignments used to help me i NYC...walking...notice architecture, the windows, exteriors...The Chrysker Building, the Seamen's center, old entrances on Lexington Ave...then one day listen for sounds...or colors...or fashion observations...it changes one's relationship with one's self. Acceptatance...at least a little...helps one entertain oneself. and be a friend and have some fun. Humble efforts.
