Great Videos! I've watched all of your Fiat 500e mod videos and your teardown videos. I'm excited to watch your EV Conversion videos. Keep them coming please!
Do not run the power electronics without any cooling. You will be surprised how quickly they overheat and thermal limit. The battery won't need cooling in this scenario, but don't try to charge without cooling, and if you possibly get the car to come out of park, definitely cool the HV Inverter. It doesn't have to be fancy, you could even hook up a garden hose to it, just as long as there is liquid flowing through. Also, you can go through the stored messages to at least get an idea of some of the errors on all those lights.
@The Evolving World I know it's been over a year, but I was wondering if you have any 500e parts left over? I'm looking to replace the Power Inverter Module on my 500e.
Most parts are either: reused, sold, or gone. If you have a '13.5 or an early '14, there was a recall for faulty PIM's. If so, you should be able to that replaced for free.
thank you for this video. will you have a follow up on getting the motor bench tested? You also mentioned an aftermarket wire harness solution. Who are you sourcing that from?
So what's going on with this project these days? Your videos are extremely helpful as someone wanting to do a conversion based on a 500e. (We have a 500e now, as does my dad - I want another one to become the powertrain for my 92 Jeep Comanche.) I was really bummed to not see this bench test work. My best case scenario would be to use as much out of the 500e as possible, particularly the controller/inverter/charger. This is all just a dream at this point, but I'm trying to learn everything I can. I'm wondering whether it's going to be very demanding of certain sensors, though - wheel speed sensors come to mind, as well as any sort of collision detection it may have.
I'm finishing up my first of at least five EV conversions. Lot's of videos will be coming later this year. Not using the 360v Bosch motor, charger, inverter/controller as it's a whole lot easier to buy a fully customizable motor. But, lot's of other EV parts have been successfully transferred over. Stay tuned!
@@theevolvingworld Interesting, and thanks for getting back to me. Did you get any farther with that motor/controller combination than in this video? My dreams of harvesting the drivetrain and parting out the rest of a 500e are 90% dashed, but still anything I can learn from you about any absolute roadblocks would be really helpful.
@@tmarbut Not much further. Somebody, one day will figure it out. Just set the powertrain aside for now & use the other useful parts. Also, I would save anything with an electrical connecter on it & "part out" the rest.
Hi, I am researching a motor for a low power conversion in Australia and I can get a Bosch 180/120 from a hybrid axle. I am needing some help in determining if the Fiat 500e motor is wound the same as the Hybrid application. Do you still have the motor? If so, would you be able to measure the resistance across the windings? That way I can compare the resistance to the hybrid application and see if it is wound the same. Thank you for your time.
Is there anything inherently wrong about putting in a second ev kit car type charger in a stock fiat 500e and using a generator to charge while in motion? Thinking about this for a once in a rare while cross country trip with a generator on a small hitch cargo platform
I love all the crazy ideals people come up with! In the very near future, there will be all kinds of cool EV's coming out. We personally have a deposit on a Aptera, which has solar panels on it to allow for charging while driving or sitting in the sun. Cheers,
I have a 500e which I plan to gut to convert a Honda 1986 CRX into an EV. From what I'm aware, you used the batteries but not the motor or controller from the 500e. Any words of advice or suggestions you can share? I've done engine swaps before but I'm also keenly aware that the Fiat is extremely sensitive to "missing" parts so I assuming a high chance that I will also fail to bench test the 500e motor battery controller. Did you ever get it to work? I was going to take a slow part removal analysis approach by removing accessories and check to see if the 500e will still operate (drive). Starting with things like lights, airbags, seats, hvac. Essentially to figure out where the ecu stops and won't let the car run. Alternatively I might explorer an alternative controller to see if I can pair it with the motor and batteries. Thoughts?
Yes, I remember you. Long story short, until somebody hacks into the 500e controller &/or makes another controller work with the Bosch motor, it's not going to work. Too much OEM CANBUS integrated crap. We are well on our way on our 2nd EV conversion project, this time a FWD with a 5 speed manual (full project videos will be appearing soon).
@@theevolvingworld thanks for the reply. So from your investigations, we can't use any other controllers as the motor requires the oem canbus to operate? No way to splice in wires to bypass the oem canbus?
@@theevolvingworld It seems the motor "could" be operated with other controllers based on these diagrams. drive.google.com/file/d/1-q4d5VPuHH9xh_1l9SAy9MbHnjg1VDal/view?usp=sharing
@@Windraver Fundamentality, the motor should really just need a power supply & basic instructions (as an accelerator pedal) to tell it what to do. I've heard that some people have gotten the LEAF powertrain to work, which is interesting. It would be great if somebody hacked into the 500e evcu. I like aftermarket controllers as they are completely customizable. If you got the time & want to experiment around, then by all means.
Are you selling any parts? I'm rebuilding a 2015 500e that had a front end accident and I need the small aux coolant pump that is behind the radiator fan slightly to the driver's side, mounted on the big rectangular aluminum motor mount block..
Select parts have been kept & avail. If that specific pump is for the motor/inverter/charging cooling, then I will be using it. If it's a battery cooling pump then it would be avail. I'd have to check. Maybe contact us on twitter.
Thanks for posting these Fiat500e videos. Can you do one on replacing the orange charging port? I am not the only Fiat500e owner that has a broken charge port . I just ordered a new charge port and would love to learn from the pros how to replace it; thanks!
We like that you appreciate the FIAT 500e vids. Sorry, we don't have a broken one in need of replacing at this time. However, from the teardown series, I recall it being a fairly straight forward procedure.
No, it's an iconic classic. I'll do a full series on the whole process, once it's complete. As opposed to as I go. Hence, the seemingly light posting of videos in recent months. The second one will be an ultra light sports car, think Ariel atom or lotus elise as an EV. Hope your 500e is doing well.

@@chadman98116 Hi Chad, Well I never really got it to work right & lost interest in pursuing further. If someone does ever get "it all figured out", I'd love to be in the know on that & put my 500e Bosch motor/controller & charger in another car.
Why would you not use all the parts from the 500e and connect everything? All those components are well-engineered and it works. This way you can use the 500e troubleshooting guide if something goes wrong with your EV project. I really doubt that you are going to crack the can bus code and make it work with another controller.
