You're right if you mean antiquity - they were the ancient Greeks. All that is left are old stones. The new Greece is a country of debt and mass tourism. Garbage everywhere and bad roads. The attitude of the people is tomorrow, simply tomorrow.
Right Alex, except for who were the barbarians for the Greeks and for the Romans, don't get me wrong for I love Greece, the Greeks and as an Italian levantine I feel more Greek. The western world is for social integration - multi ethnic, religious, language and ethical values. During the Byzantine period the Greeks themselves were Romans for this reason.
And the Ancient Greeks credited much culture to the Ancient Egyptians.

Was in a restaurant one evening on Crete and there was a small band playing music. They asked if anyone had a request so I asked for Zorba, the guy rolled his eyes as if to say "oh not again" but they played it. Everyone stopped eating and began to tap the tables in tune with the music, then continued eating after. Great moments, wonderful atmosphere, unforgettable music. I love Crete and its people. God bless from the UK.

Hermosa música. Tuve la oportunidad de ir en un tour de 4 días a Grecia. Fue en 1996, durante un descanso en el trabajo por el Ramadán en el trabajo que estábamos haciendo en Arabia Saudita con la empresa Techint. Era un tour de 4 días durante el cual conocimos el Partenón, los lugares emblemáticos de Atenas y hasta un recorrido en yate por las islas griegas y una noche de taberna, donde se presentaban músicos y bailarines excelentes. Esa noche, esos bailes, esas hermosas melodías me quedaron grabados en la mente y todavía recuerdo ese viaje como si fuera ayer. Saludos desde Colombia.
