Once it caught on, there were dozens of companies selling them. The man who had the patent started litigation to stop them and receive money for the infringement. The litigation went on for years because the patent was challenged. I don't remember the actual costs but it was in the tens of millions of dollars and he ended up bankrupt. A good marketing strategy to keep as much of it as possible would have made some profit for his company instead of his attorneys.
