  • Hello, I have been given a Yaesu FT-101E, It needs working on as there is no Receive or Transmit, it does power on but chatters and hums like a good'n, still it was free and I do like a challenge.
    Thanks to Bob G0NUN for the Radio, a great gift and will be much loved.
    I'm still learning and any comments to correct or confirm my belief are gratefully received.
    Please subscribe and like.
    Cheers
    Mike - M0MSN
    P.S. do not take my word for it, give it a go for yourself.

    Another FT-101 returns to the air - always a good thing. There is a very active Facebook group devoted to the FT-101 series - Keeping the FT101 Alive. Now over 1200 worldwide members, everything focused on repair, alignment and using these radios. If you have a FT-101, head on over, plenty of knowledgeable blokes and good contributions. Sooner or later, you'll have to fix it- part of the fun & learning!

    That radio is the reason why i have radios today. 1981, my best friends Parents were both Hams, she invited me over one day and she showed me her Parents radio room. she had two 101's parked next to each other along with a vast collection of other radios but the 101's stood out to me above the rest. I'll never forget the impression it left on me, her Mum got her G4 licence and i would sit with her and watch tapping the key. i was around 13/14 years old at the time. Cheers MIke, brings back alot of good memories. 73

      Hey Matt, Its the sounds and smell of the tubes of these older radios that bring the memories for me..

      @Mike-M0MSN Completely off-topic Mike, but I have a question about scientific calculators and Amateur radio formulae. I've noticed that on one or two of your videos, you use a scientific calculator. Have you ever thought of doing a video on how they are used in regards to the exams?
      I've searched the web but with no real results, and i think you may be the man to change that as I'm sure I'm not the only one who struggles with the calculator input.
      73 Mike, and thank you.

    I SO WANT TO DO THIS TYPE OF WORK! But I can barely screw in a light bulb! Did a lot of SWL as a boy, now 71 and really want to get back to not just SWL but Ham and even more to understand operation and repair on a more practical level as illustrated by your skill. Please don't stop, inspiring.........thank you.
    Best, John L. Raymond, Maine U.S.A.
    PS: I have Yaesu FT 101EX bought it about 5 years ago in a shrewd deal($450). STILL DO NOT KNOW IF IT WORKS, lights up though, fun to look at(yea for me).

    Boy does this bring back memories. My brother-in-law hand carried on of these back from Japan for my dad. I grew up watching him talk on it. When he moved away I got my general and we had regular talks every Sunday night. I had a Yaesu FT401b (still do)
    Unfortunatley my dad's Yeasu was lost when his house burned down. I'm getting back to being active and I'm looking at restoring my FT401B.
    Thanks so much for the video!

    Good to see you got it running well Mike. It sounds lovely and looks in good cosmetic condition. I'm sure you will get a lot of pleasure using it. Old rigs are not everyone's thing but for me, they have the charm of history to them. That's my excuse for ending up with 4 off RCA AR88s!

    One of the issues that can escalate quickly is the equalising resistors across the high voltage rectifier diodes, they are operated at over rated voltage (not wattage) and when they fail they cause the rectifiers to fail like dominoes. I will message you elsewhere 73

    A nail blimey ! I thought you only put a nail in place of the main fuse after the electricity company had cut you off🙂

  • @TheColeChannelEagle
    @TheColeChannelEagle Год назад

    Lol!!.... apparently the "mod" was for 12 meters. As I see that you conveniently removed the sticker from the scale on the bandswitch by the second segment of the receive demonstration video! And the "short" was obviously caused by the nail rattling about inside the radio, and not the mod.

    On my FT-101EE, unless I have the Heater switch ON, it won't transmit....what could it be? Thank you everyone for your thoughts and advice.

    • @ChartreuseKitsune
      @ChartreuseKitsune Год назад

      The heater switch controls the filaments for the output tubes. It's normal behaviour that you can't transmit without it on, the reason you'd turn it off is if you're on battery and just listening, or saving wear on the tubes when not transmitting. After turning on the heater it'll take around 30s before the tubes are war,ed up and you can start transmitting. If you havent used a tube set before, check the manual for the procedure of tuning up the finals.

    Wonderful video. What was the "modification" that was done?

    • @mike-M0MSN
      @mike-M0MSN  2 года назад +1

      11 meters

    • @PeterKings
      @PeterKings Год назад

      @@mike-M0MSN Actually I think you will find that the modification was to bring the WARC bands to the rig - so 30, 17 and 12 metres. Hence the extra markings that are on the front of the rig. I have a 101E the same in which I fitted the same mod many years ago. The rig has sat on my shelf for many years and needs new finals in it and have at long last decided to do the work on it. So been looking up vids on the subject. There are one or two questionable ones out there!! (G0OIK)

  • @2EOGIY
    @2EOGIY 2 года назад

    7:58 That's not a nail, that's a fuse. Can't see details on the video but it should be somewhere around 30-60A. I guess that spark emiting resistor was the culprit behind the malfunction.
