Growing up, my twin brother and I always lusted over a buddy’s Stevens model 22/410. On our 18th birthday in 1969 I bought my brother a Savage model 24J-DL in .22/.410. To my surprise he had bought me a model 24S-A in .22mag/20 gauge. That was just 1 of many ‘twin coincidences’. He’s gone now, I still have, use and love both guns and I sure miss him.

I walked many many miles through the hills and fields carrying a model 24.... and many Jacks, cottontails, quail and dove fell despite the guns imperfections... but as a young man (12-17) with visions of Big game hunts and Alaskan adventures, the small shortcomings of that gun didn't matter at all. I share your sentiments about the model 24. It truly is one of the all-time greats as a practical hunting gun. I look back at those times as a kid roaming the hills and that gun is a part of some of the greatest memories of my life. Thanks for the video and your review of a great gun.

I have an original Model 24 in 22WMR over 410. My favorite Uncle gave it to me recently. He bought it for his wife over 60 years ago. I stayed with them one summer when I was 13 years old. My Uncle was the first person to teach me how to shoot a gun. I used this very gun to shoot a woodchuck. I brought the woodchuck home and my Uncle cleaned it and cooked it up for us. I will never let this gun go. It will be in my family forever.

My dad had a special one. It had a .22 Magnum over a 20 Gauge with a white metal receiver and a brass trigger. It was the prettiest gun I've ever seen with engraving of a turkey on one side, and a fox on the other. The choke was full, and although a single shot shotgun, he got more than his share of ducks with it.

The quality of old Savage firearms is World Class. They had great craftsmen, great mettalurgy, excellent machine tools and the pride that American workers used to possess just emanates from them. It seems like they were the most flexible guys in the business. As you mentioned, you see guns from the same era with wildly different finish, engraving, wood, etc. My Grandpa shot a Model 99 Featherweight in .300 Savage. He was poor, but he hunted with the local Doctor, who had one of the fully engraved ones with fancy wood. I have his 99 and it's still an MOA rifle with its period Weaver Mark 4. I took a big whitetail with it three years ago.

Alright! This brought a tear to my eye as the Savage 24 was my first gun that I still have and wouldn’t sell at any price. My father gave it to me on my 13th birthday in 1961 with a cut down stock. It’s the original model with 22LR and 410 barrels, and a case hardened receiver. As you said, they are very well made rifles, regulate well, and was the perfect gift to start a 13 year old on a hunting life. I’ve added many rifles into my arsenal in the years since but none are as dear to me as my old Model 24. Thanks for the excellent video!

A friend of mine has one of the earlier models that was his dad's. I replaced the original cracked stock with one I found at a gun show that had the same finish. He loved the result and his 24 is good for another generation of reliable use and service.
I've got a few old Stevens that were my grandfather's and would've loved to have added this 24 to the group... No dice, but I enjoyed working on an old family gun for a good friend.
I enjoyed your video, brought back some great memories!

I have one that belonged to my grandfather. 22LR over 20 gauge. It is a good shooter. The 25H DL that you showed with the engraving. My son used it a couple of years ago to take his first squirrel. It is not the most valuable firearm I own, but it is one of the last I would part with.

Another awesome production, DD. Very interesting. Looks like you got a real shooter in your hands, one of the best of the best. I remember when I was in scouts, we had a porcupine hunt at the summer camp (but in the fall of course). One of the kids had a Model 24, it was his Dad's. Because the rest of us had never seen one before, we poked fun at him and his ridiculous looking gun. I guess he's the one laughing now! Those 24's are true heirloom pieces. I'm a subscriber and look forward to your upcoming videos. Thanks.

I grew up shooting a friend’s 24. Years later I got a new one. The day I bought my 24F twenty five years ago, my other plinkers started collecting dust. The 24 is the most enjoyable firearm I’ve ever owned. It’s nothing to beat your chest about, or kit-up with and prance about like a closet commando; just a fun gun.

Great video for those of us who appreciate the iconic model 24. All of mine are 20 ga. Have .357, .357 maximum, .223, 30-30, and .222. Also have a new-in-box Baikal .22 mag/.410 combo. I kind of went nuts on these since they were so affordable at the time and I love firearms that use real wood and steel. Side note: 20 gauge slugs punish the shoulder.

Great video. I have a Model 24 N and I haven't gotten the sights set yet to hit anything. I haven't picked up any .410 shells and only had 6 when I got the gun, and Walmart hasn't had any in quite some time, so I haven't had any real checks on it. Right now, I can hit a printer paper case box around 50 feet and way off on the .22 even at 25 yards. It has potential but hard to do much at a public range where everyone is competing for a shooting spot and you can't go cold range every few minutes to check targets. You guys with a private place and room to shot are more fortunate than most know.

  • @davewinter2688
    @davewinter2688 2 года назад +1

I never owned one but was always attracted to the 22LR/410. I thought that would be the perfect squirrel and rabbit gun. I don't understand why the 24" barrel would be a problem with any choke as all the velocity is gained in about the first 18" of barrel. Also with modern plastic shot wads will make a shotgun pattern almost one choke increment tighter than what's stamped on the barrel especially with older fixed choked guns. Now I've got to go out and find one of the early guns with the good barrel construction and regulation. I'm with you on the barrel selector but I like the top tang lever like on my side by sides and over/unders. Keep up the good work. Keep'em coming and good hunting.

In my opinion- a conjoined barrel combo gun like this with a 12 gauge on the bottom (threaded chokes) with a .204 ruger on top. Outfitted with see-through scope rings and a 4-16x optic. Then carry a chamber adapter kit.

You found a good one. My first Savage 24 was the .30-30 over 20 Gauge. I wanted a deer rifle I could use in North Carolina. Sad to say, it was a split barrel. The .30-30 could not group all that well. But the 20 gauge shot rifled slugs through it into cloverleafs at 40 yards all day long. I sold it. My second was a .22 Mag over 20 gauge. I shot a few squirrels with it. I told it to get an Baikal Model 94 in .22 Mag over 20 gauge. I liked the double triggers. It had the barrels together. It was accurate enough. I shot a few squirrels with it as well. I sold it and now have an older model 24 with the closer barrels. It is a .22 LR over 20 gauge. It is very accurate and regulated. I also picked up the Double Badger in .22 LR over .410. I liked the double triggers. It was accurate but some of the .22 LR ammo did not shoot. There was some light strikes. I cleaned it up and sold it. So I am looking for another Savage Model 24 in .22 LR over .410 and one in .22 Mag over 20 gauge to round out my collection. Nice vide!

I have a 24S-D 22lr/20gauge. It was pretty rough when I got it and I had the sights redone with fiber optic peeps lights and removable choke system installed. Love it! The only caveat is to remember to keep it on 20 Gauge for snap shots and to check that you don't eject the unfired .22 cartridge when you reload.

I bought a color case hardened Modell 24 chambered in .22WMR and 20/76 around theree years ago. This gun had split barrels and major regulation issues, so I sold it again. After that, I bought a BRNO ZH 304 in 7x57 R and 12/70. Great build quality, excellent regulation, set trigger, automatic safety and it is one of only a few big bore combination guns, that has the rifled barrel on top of the shotgun barrel. Including one you missed. It's a 30-30/12 gauge. All are the older brazed barrel style. It's funny that I bought them for next to nothing, I paid the most, $100 for the 30-30/12 gauge. I first found a later model WMR/20 that was ina a house fire, I restored it but I was never happy with the split barrels and the cheap sights. Ive tried to sell it a few times and I always end up being mad at people and keeping it.. Once I learned a lot more about them I started looking for another one. I found a gun that someone had tig welded a scope mount to the barrel. its a 24s-e similar to yours. its only .22lr though. I had the barrrel cut down to 19in and winchoke screw in chokes installed. then I shortened the stock from the front so it moved the grip closer to the trigger while shortening the LOP. I carried it for years and now im getting ready to tear it down and refinish it.

I really enjoyed this vid, Dog, because going back to my teenage years I wanted one of these guns badly. Fast forward 1-2 decades, I found a combo gun at a gunshow. A .222 Rem over 12 ga, it is nothing fancy. Has split barrels and side selector but the rear sight folds down. It says Ithaca Gun Co as well as Tikka on the side. Sadly, I have not hunted it much. Now, I have a Krieghoff drilling with 16 ga barrels over 7X57R. It's a cool gun. When you select the rifle barrel, the rear sight flips up automatically. As far as old guns with fixed full choke barrels, they can be made to be more effective at close, upland ranges with the use of spreader loads. Thanks again, DD!

Hello, I have a savage 24 that is a 223/23 and I have tried as hard as I can to find out what the scope mount that was used that screwed into the two screw holes on the side. I have a picture of one but I can't find out what brand it was. I probably couldn't find one, but I thought I might be able to have one made for it. Would you have any idea what brand the scope mount was? Thanks Mike.

I’ve owned two, a 17 over 12 and a 357 over 20. The 17 had an extractor issue that ultimately caused me to sell it, I’m still working out the sights on the 357 but I like it a great deal so far. My favorite combo though has to be my marrocchi 612 (an updated valmet 412) in 30-06 over 12 gauge. This one is particularly nice because you can adjust the barrel regulation on your own. Super fun guns all of them!

Mine must have been a 24V because it was a .22mag. over a 20guage and if the rifle barrel was on the shotgun barrel shot about a foot low and when I tried to trade it in at a gun shop for a .22mag. rifle the guy didn't even want to deal with it saying they were real dogs

Does Savage or anyone offer the 24E hammer conversion kits? My 24 has the receiver-side mounted barrel selector. Thanks

Sold my stevens 22 410 with tenite stock for $400. Buying a bolt action 223 now for $450. comes with a red dot sight. Ill use that as my main hunter instead of my savage 243. 55 grains can drop deer easy. Theres a video by waikirimoane and they hunt red deer and they are dropping those big red deer with 55 grains bullets in 223. id set it for 300 yards and leave it there. Red dot sight is a tube style that looks like a scope and the gun with the reddot looks really sweet. I can use it for target shooting too.

I've shot a few Model 42s and they all have been shooters. All Savages are accurate but like anyone there will always be a lemon here or there. These 42s shoot better than they look. Problem with the 24 is it's too expensive to make, same goes with the Model 99. They could make them but most are not going to pay what they would cost. Your talking Ruger One money and maybe more. I tell you that 410 with a slug is a thumper in the 42's six pound weight. Not as bad as my old HR single shot break action 12 gauge, she was old and actually serial number 6 on that gun. That thing was brutal and too painful for a 15 year old. Freaking thing cause a flinch after the shot

I just bought a 24F in 12 gauge choked and 22 hornet. Never been fired. Got it for about half of what they are selling used for on gun broker. The trigger is horribly heavy and gritty. I’ll take it apart and do a trigger job on it before it it gets an optic.

I stoned my trigger on and off for the last couple of days testing along the way.I now brakes crisp at 4.5 pounds. Its so crisp that to me it feels similar to 3.5 pound AR aftermarket triggers. I’ll load test and see if it’s regulated before I lighten it any more.

My model 24 is quite early there is no serial number and there is no A or B so I have no idea how old this gun is . The clambering is .22 lr over 3" 410.
