- Victor Borge in Sweden practising a Chopin-valse with Anna(Rundberg) Buchenhorst as a make-up-artist, Joakim Kallhed as a cleaner and Eddie Scoller as host. This recording was made in Gothenburg the 23th of November 1989.
Borge was born Børge Rosenbaum in Copenhagen, Denmark, into a Jewish family. His parents, Bernhard and Frederikke Rosenbaum, were both musicians-his father a violist in the Royal Danish Orchestra[7] and his mother a pianist.[8] Like his mother, Borge began piano lessons at the age of two, and it was soon apparent that he was a prodigy. He gave his first piano recital when he was eight years old, and in 1918 was awarded a full scholarship at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, studying under Olivo Krause. Later on, he was taught by Victor Schiøler, Liszt's student Frederic Lamond, and Busoni's pupil Egon Petri.
Borge played his first major concert in 1926 at the Danish concert-hall Odd Fellow Palæet (The Odd Fellow's Lodge building). After a few years as a classical concert pianist, he started his now famous "stand up" act, with the signature blend of piano music and jokes. He married American Elsie Chilton in 1933, the same year he debuted with his revue acts. Borge started touring extensively in Europe, where he began telling anti-Nazi jokes.
When the Nazis occupied Denmark during World War II, Borge was playing a concert in Sweden, and managed to escape to Finland. He traveled to America on the USS American Legion, the last neutral ship to make it out of Petsamo, Finland, and arrived 28 August 1940, with only 20 dollars , with $3 going to the customs fee. Disguised as a sailor, Borge returned to Denmark once during the occupation to visit his dying mother.
Move to America
Even though Borge did not speak a word of English upon arrival, he quickly managed to adapt his jokes to the American audience, learning English by watching movies. He took the name of Victor Borge, and, in 1941, he started on Rudy Vallee's radio show, but was hired soon after by Bing Crosby for his Kraft Music Hall.
From then on, fame rose quickly for Borge, who won Best New Radio Performer of the Year in 1942. Soon after the award, he was offered film roles with stars such as Frank Sinatra (in Higher and Higher). While hosting The Victor Borge Show on NBC beginning in 1946, he developed many of his trademarks, including repeatedly announcing his intent to play a piece but getting "distracted" by something or other, making comments about the audience, or discussing the usefulness of Chopin's "Minute Waltz" as an egg timer.Or he would start out with some well-known classical piece like Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and suddenly move into a harmonically suitable pop or jazz tune like Cole Porter's "Night and Day" or "Happy Birthday to you".

This sketch was made at the Swedish Televsion in Gothenburg as I was a student. Victor Borge was celebrating his 80th birthday and did a lot of performances in Scandinavia at that time.
What an awesome experience!! Jealous you got perform with him! You are a wonderful pianist and I'm sure he'd be proud!
Ja, but It's a very simple stage routine, but why can it be so hilarious?🤣🤣
He was and still is the BEST!
Thank you Victor!
I am sure the angels are cracking up at your jokes and marvelled at your playing!! We miss you terribly!!
This man is brilliant. I've been a fan since the first commercial that I saw in1990. RIP. Mr. Borge and thank you for the laughter.
So much fun to watch!! Some of the fun is anticipating what's to come next!! grin. Needless ta say, Mr. Borge was a Master at the piano and comedy! What a combination! Cheers!!!
When intelligence meets humour only laughter can be the outcome and Viktor Borge was a prodigy on that matter
It's easy to realize that he was such a phenomenal musician and pianist. That he could turn things on a dime was pure genius. He was the Fred Astaire of the musical arts.
This is one of my favourite sketches and this version has the glove twist at the end.
I don't speak or understand their words but their language of comedy (and music) is universal!
Thanks so much, such a great memory
men du hade inte hanske.....:)
Saw him live at Detroit Opera Theatre in the early 1990’s… so memorable! He was a great pianist AND comedian, such a rare combination..
Will never be another like Mr. Borge. The world is a sadder place without him.
I love that he had the humility to make that joke at his own expense! What a great man ❤️
No one came close then, and they haven't done since. Victor was a totally, 100% unique talent - often copied, but NEVER equalled, let alone bettered ! RIP Victor xxx
This is amazing! For one thing, it's not easy to purposefully make a mistake once you've learned a piece. Second, it's not easy to play piano with gloves on.
Stephanie Johnson I can say from experience, this piece is pretty easy to mess up even after having learned it.
First Last b
+ First Last
I can confirm that!
A favorite of mine, but it takes me a lot of concentration to prevent going astray. I really have to stay on top of it.
Valse, C# minor, Op.64 No.2. It's an opus-mate with the Minute Waltz; 64 No.1, Db major.
And the other one other, 64 No.3, Ab major, that has a very interestingly rambling nature.
I can also confirm that intentional, purposeful mistakes are really hard to pull off.
Alex Boles detonkewerö
And even though he was making mistakes, his phrasing was much more fluid than the other two so you could tell he's actually a professional lol
OMG no one like Borge, he is SUPER fantastic comedian.
Lucky girl, to have worked with Victor Borge; most of his audience nearly ended up hospitalised from laughing too much! Or maybe i should say: lucky Borge, having a pretty & talented make-up artist to mop his brow! Bravo!
Celebrating 100000 viewers. Thanks everyone for your comments!
now you have over 300.000 . must have been good to work with Victor .

I saw this when it was aired on Swedish tv. Love Victor Borge, brilliant man. I also think that was the first time I heard Eddie Skollers (the guy that introduced them) awesome songs!
hilarious, i had only seen the english version of this particular sketch - nice glove!
What a BRILLIANT sketch!!! Loved the Cleaner!! Victor Borge "struggling" to play the C#minor Valse and the Make-up Artiste and the Piano Polisher "show him how it's done"!! Priceless!!! Did Mr. Borge autograph the gloves after he was finished with them??!!
Che bellezza! Talento ,musica ,e tanta ,tanta ironia 😊😊🎉❤!!!
Maestro Borge, wonderful ! always. Thanks for sharing.
What a fun skit! Very enjoyable. Thank you.
He makes me SO proud to be Danish
You've got to love Victor Borge, he was a master on piano and a master at comedy.
Master pianist for sure.
Thank you so much for the abridged explanation! :) :)
So glad that I stumbled across this recording, and your whole channel!
Thank you so much, very glad to hear that!
Genius, in comedy and as a musician.
Wenn Virtuosität und Humor sich treffen, bleiben sie immer Sieger!
Thank you!
Tak for det lille fine klip med Victor Borge. Jeg har haft ham som gæst på Hotel d'Angleterre, hvor jeg var piccolo. Du er også god at lytte til pøj,pøj med fremtiden. :-)
Love this guy!!! But please, English subtitles!!! :)
Beautiful!
Priceless video!
Det var tider .. ❤
it's the gloves people it's the gloves!
Hi all, I have some rare footage with Victor Borge - recorded in his native country Denmark. He partly speaks Danish, but I have applied English subtitles for those parts. This is the playlist (Enjoy!): ruclips.net/p/PLCby7t-aPVUksdwJPSy7ov7-tHibgxC4h
Thank you very much. I have been looking for some "new" VB sketches and you have provided them. Great!
A highly original comedian. Pure class.
Comedy gold from such a simple concept....!
Great!
Victor the Great ;-)
1:33 loved the raised eye brow
He knows it so well, it is hard to play wrongly!
*Dieser Maestro war wirklich brillant.*
Victor Borge, Anna Buchenhorst and J.Kallhed playing Chopin
FLAMENQUEANTES&THE DODGES Thanks for that information! I would‘ve never guessed it. I mean it‘s not like it‘s written in the title
I like how he changed this act a little because normally at the end a kid comes and asks for an autogram but this time its the magic glove
autograph
I wanna borrow that right hand glove.
This is quality content right here
class act .
Yo quiero ese guante...
Волшебная перчатка!
Han är briljant. Fullständigt briljant.
Cute. So cute.
bare FANtastisk !! ..big, big, BIGGEN
I hear Bo Burnham in a lot of Borge’s comedic stylings.
I wonder if Bo had seen his stuff because I had.
Victor spoke Danish and it's easy for me as a swede to understand. The text is in Swedish!
Ein wahrer Mensch
Not that is matters but this particular klip is from Denmark and in the Danish language. Eddie Skoller also made shows in Sweden and in Swedish, but just in case any one was wondering, this isn´t one of them... It´s a nice video, that´s for sure! ;)
Sensacional 👏👏👏
006- 02. Year 1925 he went to cheak hands 2 hr. ,but may I. Years after and Frankensty on the left ,Mozart on the right hands.
Didn't understand a word, but I loved it anyway - THUMBS UP
Thanks for posting, to my account this is the 3rd (televised) impression of the famous Vorges routine of ¨mistakenly¨ playing the Chopin Waltz in C-sharp minor, Op. 64, No. 2 (at bar 22) being the first in Victor Vorge Parody & Music show (NBC,1946) and the second in the London Weekend - Borge Clockwise 1972, being the first one the most really impressive! yet this is the only one including the glove punch
A great entertaining video, Vítor Borges is an excellent pianist, but particularly in this video, a playback seems to have been used, not only because of the nature of the video, but also because it is difficult to play with gloves but also because it is difficult for a pianist to make mistakes when they already have practice in the execution of the piece. It can be seen that in reality they are not playing, just look at the hands and you see that when you hear the last two higher notes, the right hand is no longer on the keyboard, so it’s a play back (the right hand is in the air and not on the keyboard, the notes on a piano range from low to high from left to right), not that they do not know how to play, but because of the difficulties and comedic nature of the video!
Or there is a lack of synchrony between the audio and the video, which I don't think because when they speak the sound is synchronized with the mouth.
Genio 💖💖💖
Brilliant
thanks!!

Fantastic!!!!
Afternoon in Paris Thanks so much❤
Thanks so much❤
It is a difficult piece.
super
It was recorded in Gothenburg in Sweden. Thanks anyway!
Is my iPad out of sync? All of them seem to finish before the music does!
No it is the synchronisation in the recording that is the problem
Lovely Mis en scène ...
Я тоже хочу такие перчатки! 😊💐
Lol funny and they're great at playing the piano!
Op. 64 No. 2
Jeg savner ham...
another tribute to victor borge, you dont need to speak the language to understand it!
Partially (according to wikipedia)
Victor Borge: Danish
Sketch made in: Sweden

SEE?
A sharp miner.
Where did that last note come from?
The video and audio are not in sync! The audio is lagging nearly a second behind. Look at the left hand, playing the last note long before you can hear it.
Are the Swedish and Danish Languages similar enough that each is easily understood?
Some understand it better than others. :-)
APatronOfTheArts Yes we can communicate :-)
APatronOfTheArts norwegian and swedish are very similar and we can easily communicate. But danish on the other hand is impossible to understand, even for the danish themselves.
Eddie....
Name of the piece please?
Hi, it's Chopin Waltz in C sharp minor op. 64 no 2.
Trattisar like it....
