I think Ted Albert, owner of Albert's Studios & older brother George Young were the ones that said bagpipes had to be there in the song. Bon grabbed some money from the studio & ran around the corner where there was a bagpipe shop, bought quite a pricey set, & ran back to the studio. Former bassist Mark Evans, who was there, said it hilarious watching Bon, Malcolm, & Angus, try to put them together, swearing & carrying on! He described the scene as three Scotsman all trying to figure out how to solve a Scottish Rubik's puzzle!

Bon Scott was a genius on stage... Wish I could have seen him live!!! He died before I turned 7 years old.... He was the best front man.. I like Brian Johnson, and where he took ACDC, after Bon died...but Brian is not the front man that Bon was... Try "Whole Lotta Rosie ", by ACDC, with Bon Scott....

Here's a neat bit of trivia for you - Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' is the number one selling album of all time. It united genres, and all music fans loved it. #2 on the all time list is AC/DC's 'Back in Black' album, because it does the same. Everyone loves their music, and not to take anything away from MJ, but it's harder for a lot of music listeners who aren't rock fans to give AC/DC a try while it's much easier for everyone to try MJ. So, it's always great to see reactions to AC/DC music because we (older listeners) all know you'll love their music because you're giving them a chance =)

While jamming on new songs in the studio, co-producer George Young (the older brother of Angus and Malcolm) recalled that Bon Scott had once been in a pipe band and encouraged the band to experiment with incorporating bagpipes into the song. Scott left the studio that day and returned with a set of bagpipes purchased at a Park Street music store at what was an extortionately high price (AU$479- the equivalent of about 6 weeks wages) at the time. Bassist Mark Evans would later muse that the amount “would have bought two Strats”. Simply putting the pipe-set together proved tricky, and it became apparent Scott had never played the instrument before, having in fact been a drummer in the aforementioned pipe band. Nonetheless, Scott taught himself to play well enough to record and perform the song (initially with the help of tape loops).
However, playing the song live was made difficult by the fact that the whole band would have to tune to the drone pipe. Thus the song, though iconic of the band's early repertoire, was probably played live no more than 30 times The last occasion was in 1976, following an incident where Scott set down the pipe-set at the corner of a stage during a concert at St Albans High School in St Albans, Victoria, Australia and they were destroyed by fans. Subsequent (relatively rare) live performances employed a recording of the song's bagpipe track or an extended guitar solo by Angus Young.

As far as I can tell this is the only song Brian has never sung from the Bon era, well I have never heard Brian sing it anywhere myself, I think it was quite personal to the original band members and especially Bon era fans and they never wanted to go there. I wasn't even 2 years old before Bon died but was raised with all the Bon era vinyls from my dad and we didn't really start listening to Back In Black, Hells Bells etc until late 80's and then started listening to more Brian songs once Thunderstruck was released and I personally wouldn't want Brian singing It's a Long Way To The Top because it wouldn't sound right to me.

BRIAN JOHNSON'S VOICE HAS A FAR BETTER HARD ROCK SOUND THAN BON SCOTT'S VOICE. Bon Scott sounded like he hadn't hit puberty yet, he sounded like Justin Bieber. Now we know the truth.
