Here we are 6 years after this was posted and I have successfully followed The Lucky Needle's great instructional video to fix my sunroof shade..... That's not to say there weren't some stumbles along the way, but got it done and it looks great! Thanks a million!
Have to congratulate Lucky, one of the best instructional vids on RUclips. Straight to the point, factual, no BS and no annoying loud metal soundtrack. Well done.
In case you're still checking the comments here... All my questions answered! Thank you! Speaking as an owner of a beloved 200x BMW E82/E9x, I'm very grateful for these DIY clips. My '09 135i has been an absolute champ through the years, but it has essentially transitioned in to a restoration project. My sunroof is currently in need of a proper lube and adjustment. Watching this just made it a breeze. TY!
Thanks you had to repair a hanging sunshade that some guy just stuffed into the roof and let the roof back but thanks to this video taking it apart and putting it back together was easy as pie and saved me money
THANK YOU for posting this tutorial... I used it to pull a headliner and sunroof cover from a wrecker today. Only difference was that I used the 4mm hex key to manually open/close the sunroof which was totally easy! Very straightforward job when you know what to do!
Thank you very much for this detailed video. I watched it a few times and tackled it last weekend. Only took 1.5 hours to remove everything and about the same to reinstall. I replaced my grey liner and all accessories with black. Even the sunshade is a 45 min job. Very easy. My mint e90 looks even better!! Thank you.
Genius, i just did mine 325i E92 07 done in upholstery shop couple months ago and the moon roof was not flush %100 from outside even in closing position even with motor Rest method, your video was extremely helpful, greating from Bahrain 🇧🇭!
Thank you....I did this repair following another video... it didn't not explain the leveling part. After doing 20k sunroof resets I found this video which helped tremendously.
What an excellent guide. I Just removed the headlining and sun roof of my 120i hatch following your instructions. Brilliant work. It was easy to follow. By the way removing the headlining from a 2006 BMW 120i hatch was out through the back hatch. I removed the headrests and tilted the seats only. I did have to give it a slight bend to get it out. I am not one to comment on videos but yours really deserves the credit. I have subscribed. Thanks again from down under 👍
@@Theluckyneedle hey, awesome video! Just one question though, that you didn't show in the end, how the heck do you put the rubber accordian thingy back in?? Lol the two rubber pieces you just pry off at the start before you work on the glass screws. Thanks for your time looking forward to your reply. Cheers!
@@Theluckyneedle hey thanks for your speedy reply! I did see that, and I assumed that was it, but I can't seem to get in at it because of the tight angle unless Im doing it wrong. The roof has to be tilted as it was when taken off the first time, or pulled back slightly?
Your welcome. Maybe you have the left an right mixed. The channel on the accordian that hold to the metal tangs are different on the top and bottom I think.
Thanks for this video. I just had to remove the interior to get water out of the passenger side after the car sprung a nasty passenger side sunroof leak. After I got it all together I guess maybe one spot on that felt sunroof trim was too high and the fabric got snagged. It basically ripped the whole thing off. Now I got to go back and fix it. I am thinking it would be a good idea to paint mark the sides of the 6 bolts with something before removing the sunroof so that you can realign them with ease upon reinstallation.
Thank you for this toturial and explanations around the sun roof & Co. I have to replace the seal around the glass piece (the soft coating is disintegrating). Can I do it without removing it from the car ?
I just came across your video and you do excellent work! I love how thorough and finicky you are when dealing with those small parts. Not sure where you're located what state but I would definitely bring my BMW X5 to you anytime for fixing. Keep up the great work I'll be watching all of your videos
one lil tip, if shade material had loosened, rolled or peeled off exposing old gummy sticky smearing stuff(its old deteriorated foam backing). make sure ya clean up that stuff from the cavity the shade stows in. gummy stuff could be on lower surface of cavity, which will ruin the newly covered panel when ya hide the shade. I made that mistake once......ONCE.
My sunroof broke in the Beirut explosion last week, from the force of the blast, and after I replaced the glass the shade fabric came off when I operated it. Is there something I should be looking out for during installation?
Thanks very much for this vid, I will be attempting it soon to recover my sunshade material. Just to make sure, the whole roof lining doesn't need to be removed as in the video right?
I did the same exact thing you did, but when I plugged in the two plugs and tried to tilt the sunroof, it gave me this message and won’t move - “Sun Roof Slide/Tilt Anti-Trap Function!”
Hey dude! Great video, but I had one small issue. After putting the sunroof back together everything works except when I want it to open completely. It gets stuck. Is this perhaps an adjustment issue I have to do manually? Any way to get it to auto-adjust?
🤨I followed the instruction in the video, had new fabric glued to the sunroof cover and reinstalled the cover and the glass. However, now when the cover retracts under the headliner along with the sunroof, it will not return to the original position when the sunroof is closed. It stays stuck under the rear headliner area and has to be fished back out each time. Obviously the mechanism that pulls the cover back out is either broken or detached. I can't see anything missing when i peer under there with a light. Any help, ideas or diagrams would be greatly appreciated!
yo man my sunroof stopped reacting to the buttons and its slightly out of place but i can hear the motor working like its supposed to.. shud i remove the sunroof and re align it ??
Where are you located? I’m having a huge issue my sun blocker does not even slide back at all. All I get is the vent title up. I already tried the reset that don’t work at all
Hold the the center of the button up for about 25 seconds or until the reset cycle is finished. Sometimes the computer glitches and won't allow you to open or close the sunroof. But usually that fixes it.
Do I need to remove the headliner in order for me to remove the sunroof glass? I set my new phone on top of my sunroof and my daughter went inside and opened the sunroof. Now my phone is sliding around in the roof of my car. Whats the easiest way to get the phone out?

Holy crap! That is a lot of work, but you did a great job showing how it’s done. 👍🏼

I work in upholstery and removing the sunroof panel was a pain, but seeing a video this detailed made my life easier. Thanks
Gonna try reupholster my own sunshade instead of paying someone watching this video. Thank you for the straight forward instructions!

Excellent. One of the best DIY car repairs I have ever seen and I have seen many. Thank you!
Thank you! You're the only one I've seen detail how to remove the sunshade.

Thank you for this video. Could not have done this without your guidance. Great that you are so detailed, careful and patient.
Thank you Andrew!
Wow you have made it look so easy
It’s so simple to follow along. I just subscribed
Thanks!
Hey man thanks a lot for this video!
Really appreciate the effort you went to show us the process of dismantling sunroof.
Cheers!
Glad it helped Jack!
Most people don't realize how consuming it is to dismantle the interior. Great job
Yeah that's for sure.. Thanks! The rest of the videos on recovering the headliner and sun visors in suede will be out in a week or two.

It just slides back on over the metal tangs of the frame. Its really easy.

Yes you can get it out without removing the the entire roof lining.
Thank you, kindly! I just may tackle this problem myself... the fabric on the sunroof visor came loose and all crunched up in the mechanism #ugh!
Really glad this helped!!!
me too!
Thanks, that was really helpful
I did the same exact thing you did, but when I plugged in the two plugs and tried to tilt the sunroof, it gave me this message and won’t move - “Sun Roof Slide/Tilt Anti-Trap Function!”
Thank you for kindly information sharing, and your teaching is really detail and good. Thank you very much.
Thank you !!
Thanks man, nice work
This is an awesome tutorial and it’s hella easy to follow! Good job. Subbed
Thanks Matt!!
Is the process the same on the panoramic moonroof?
I have a 2007 750i and I'm having trouble putting in the accordion rubber piece back on, can you help?
How did you get the side clamps back on ?!? It’s been a huge hassle to get them to fix. Seems like they are too long
Got it out ok (328i) but putting it back it was impossible to align the sunshade or put back the little plastic stabilizers. Had to take it in :(
lmao same here! I have the same model bmw 328i and just replacing the fabric on the sun shade because the material came off. :(
John Frutos I have the same problem with the fabric coming off . Did you glue back the fabric ? Trying to figure out what I should do with mine .
You helped me a lot
Glad it helped!!
I ended up flinging the plastic piece at 7:29 somewhere into the bushes, do you have the partnumber for that so that I can order it?
There are lots of online BMW parts stores. You should be able to find it there.
Thank you, i would’ve taken apart the whole headliner if I didn’t know
Thats awesome to hear it helped you save so much time! Its a lot of work to get the headliner out!

yo man my sunroof stopped reacting to the buttons and its slightly out of place but i can hear the motor working like its supposed to.. shud i remove the sunroof and re align it ??
I’ve lost the bolts to mine, anyone know the specific ones needed? I know they’re T25 but what dimensions
How similar is this procedure for a e60?
Does anyone know if it's the same for the f30
very helpful!
For some reason my sunroof track isn’t aligned. One side of the sunroof glass will bolt up but the other side won’t line up. Any suggestions ?
Thats frustrating. I have never had that issue before... Something must have gotten moved when removing it.
halfway into this video i realized i did not charge car owner/customer enough for headliner+shade recover.
Yeah that happens. Its all a learning process. Sorry....
Where are you located? I’m having a huge issue my sun blocker does not even slide back at all. All I get is the vent title up. I already tried the reset that don’t work at all
I'm in Northern California
Can I call and ask few questions?
My sunroof doesn’t move and is stuck. How can I remove it to realign it?
Hold the the center of the button up for about 25 seconds or until the reset cycle is finished. Sometimes the computer glitches and won't allow you to open or close the sunroof. But usually that fixes it.
Vesper Ibanez tried that. But the person I bought the car from took the sunroof off and reinstalled it all cock eyed.
I did mine perfevtly but now when i close it the shade wont come with it and it just keep retracting

Im In Northern California
Do I need to remove the headliner in order for me to remove the sunroof glass? I set my new phone on top of my sunroof and my daughter went inside and opened the sunroof. Now my phone is sliding around in the roof of my car. Whats the easiest way to get the phone out?
