It was exactly 10 years ago today that marijuana, better known as cannabis, first became legal in the United States…well in Colorado at least. Colorado was the first state to legalize it after around 77 years of it being effectively illegal across the country.
Now that 10 years have passed, how has Colorado and the entire country, for that matter, changed?
The campaign predicts tax revenue to make $2 million within the first year. $10 million? Ha! Colorado ended up making around $70 million in tax revenue that first year and has made more than $2 billion ever since. This money has funded everything from healthcare to education to highways to law enforcement. While more adults now consume marijuana in Colorado, there is no evidence that more kids do. Marijuana DUI arrests have modestly gone up.
Nationwide, cannabis is now completely legal for adults in 24 states, DC, and 3 territories and medically legal in 37 states. What a difference 10 years makes.
10 years ago today, Colorado changed the world.

I think it’s hypocritical to stigmatize weed when we treat tobacco and alcohol as normal and that’s coming from someone who’s pretty right wing.
Gee, it’s almost like there ARE movements against such things. Because those things ARE bad and have taken many lives.
The problem with rushing to federal law to change these things rapidly is because tabacco/nicotine and alcohol are so normalized that to make them illegal would be to criminalize the majority of the nation. The Mafia in America exists SOLELY because the law was too quick to prohibit alcohol back in the 1920s.
The solution to this problem is to change the social narrative first, integrate pier researched medicine/therapy for nicotine addiction and alcoholism, steps that we have been taking for decades now so that everyone has a fair shot at not being made a criminal by the addictions that they wanted to quit sooner.
EasyWay, the most successful cure for addiction in the world at the moment, has freed 18 million smokers from nicotine addiction, and it’s equally effective for alcohol, digital devices, gambling, refined sugar and empty carb addiction, harder drugs, etc. There’s even a free to read hack book adapted for porn addiction!
The point is, alcohol and cigarettes started off as something seemingly harmless, thus by the time scientists realized they were for us, we had already integrated it into society. The danger of weed isn’t that people will stop working or that it doesn’t have medicinal properties, it’s that we still don’t know enough about weed to know if it’s truly anymore dangerous than cigarettes or alcohol. And by the time we do find out exactly how it can hurt us, the nation will be addicted (mainly due to corporate tampering with supply) to a whole new drug to throw in with alcohol and nicotine.

My biggest issue with it after working in Colorado was the fact that ALL that money has gone more into personal pockets instead of actually improving the state.

Edit: No, I don’t get high at work. And I haven’t drunk alcohol since college. I just like hitting my dab pen every once in a while after I get home or on a weekend. The problem is that it’s in my system for like 30+ days after whilst alcohol can only be tested for a few hours after. And no I’m not telling you my job, but I can assure you i’m not operating heavy machinery.
Get a better job. I haven't had to take a drug test since 2015 when I worked for Amazon.

Work for a local company. Anything that is based in more than one state has to follow federal law. Aka why the test for marijuana. But if it's only in ur state where it's legal they only have to follow state law so unless it's fornsome reason still company policy (whoch would be a personal choice at that point) thwy don't have to test for marijuana

I've lived in CO nearly my whole life: they completely lied on how they'd use that money- schools and roads are just as bad as before.
I was born in Colorado in 78. I don't remember the roads, litter, or homeless being nearly as bad as it has been in the last 10 years.

I lived in Colorado for six years, and you clearly have never been to another state, much less in the South. I didn't see a year go by when they weren't updating/rebuilding local schools, and resurfacing the roads. They work fast, and efficiently too. In Georgia and Alabama you're lucky to have air conditioning and working plumbing unless you're going to a school in a wealthy district.
Drive south to New Mexico and drive those roads. Go check out how the rest of the country lives, maybe visit some of those schools. You're a liar.

Florida did something similar with the Lottery. The Legislature stopped funding schools to the same amout as the Lottery brought in. So schools never got better.

They spent years demonizing all drugs, claiming weed was on the same level as cocaine and heroin, and then after their administration left, the domestic policy advisor was quoted in an interview saying "... by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did." This allowed them to stop those communities from organizing protests and rallies, because those two communities were the biggest anti-Vietnam protestors out there. By silencing them, they could pretend the war was popular and good.

i think most people are aware that smoking anything isnt gonna be the best for you physically, and mentally the effects of regularly smoking weed could probably be equated to drinking regularly. Just approach weed as you would drinking pretty much. (im also under the opinion there’s more harmful effects to alcohol than there is to weed, so if alcohol is to stay legal than why not treat weed the same with similar limitations)

Our cost of living skyrocketed, homeless population is through the roof, and we have the highest crime right I’ve ever seen since the legalization of marijuana. Where did the 2 billion in tax revenue go??? Who knows.

I'm an almost-30 non-smoker living in California. People who smoke might be happy about it and those who own their own places might be able to ignore it, but it's almost impossible to find any truly non-smoking housing now that it's legal and common. Feels like almost every guy my age smokes it now. You have to have your own place to avoid it, which not everyone can afford. Otherwise, no matter how much a place may claim to be "non-smoking," at least one person there will still smoke weed anyway because they're convinced it's different. Very frustrating situation, especially given the recent housing shortage. Only was able to get out of the situation last year after finding a miraculously rare studio.

Second hand cigarette smoke can make you ill, can seep into the wallpaper, furnishings etc and poison people, and is not ok to have smoking areas in apartments. Weed is treated differently because it IS different. Second hand pot smoke is not going to give you lung cancer or COPD or stain your clothing or make it stink until it’s washed.
If anything a tiny bit of second hand pot smoke now and then might chill you out a bit.
As a substance abuse counselor, i proudly signed a petition to stop this from happening in Hawaii. The long term effects just aren't worth it.

So I live here in Colorado what I've seen is they put in handicap accessible street corners. It's a well known fact we have horrible roads. Closed school and homeless everywhere.
Nobody knows where the money went. Definitely didn't get what we were promised.

As a native of Colorado I want to set the record straight, we were never promised anything! Rampant homelessness is mostly contained in sanctuary cities which can by the way be run by a Republican. The blue people migrated here in masses from California back in the 90s and this place has stunk ever since. This state is a sh|thole in the making.

I guess you’ve forgotten that our Governor is a democrat. I live on the western slope in a small town (about 22,000) and I can tell you first hand how our town has changed for the worst. There’s beggars on most corners. The crime rate is through the roof, and our homeless population is out of control. We use to not have to lock our doors when we were home during the day. How much is this because of legalizing marijuana is anyone’s guess, but ten years ago we didn’t have this mess!

Been smoking since age 14. Did alright in school and well in university, but always knew I could've done better if I was sober. I think weed is good for older people - people who have climbed their ladder as high as it goes and achieved everything they wanted to. At that point there's nothing's left to prove and you may as well chill out. But for teenagers and young adults, I think weed should be approached very cautiously. Habitual use will trap you in numbness and apathy, and can either cause or exacerbate mental issues. When I buy an ounce of weed, I can forget about having any meaning or purpose in my life for the next 2 months. Legalisation is ultimately good, but there needs to be much better education about responsible use.
If it weren't for weed, I would have been too stressed and anxious to get my Masters. To each their own, I guess. I only use marijuana to destress after completing my work. I've never used while trying to work.
I genuinely feel like there is a proper way to smoke and improper ways . Like I imagine it's the same energy as how everyone knows not to mix light and dark or to drink water or not to drink on an empty stomach. If we approached smoking in the same light and made it REALLY normal and not taboo I feel like we could all use it a bit more effectively

I’m glad for this law, because weed being illegal while alcohol is, is just pure nonsense and VERY illogical. BUT that being said… it’s REALLY messed up some aspects of healthcare in states that aren’t legal.
Please allow me to explain, not just from my experience - but horrifically enough, many other disabled folks I have met have encountered the same situation. I live near a state where it’s recreationally legal - my state doesn’t even allow it medically. My entire life I’ve had severe chronic pain, and it was a struggle to get help AT ALL in the first place (as a disabled chick, let me tell you, the corruption in the healthcare industry is BONKERS). When I was visiting a doctor in my state, we were discussing something I could do to help my pain.
This DOCTOR instructed me to smuggle THC into the state. His finisher? “Just don’t get caught.”
If I DID “get caught”, I’d be charged with a felony, but hey, so long as it’s not their ass carted off to prison, right?
Doctors are backing out of prescribing LEGAL medications to those who need them (pain killers for Chronic Pain Patients (CPPs), barbiturates for PTSD/Anxiety, ADHD medications such as Adderall, Vyvanse, etc.) and are instructing them to do something that could land their patients behind bars. Mostly this is because of the DEA, breathing down the necks of doctors and putting a national limit on how many prescriptions of each medications are ALLOWED to be filled out (which, reminder - the DEA has ZERO medical professionals on staff and as such should have ZERO interference between a doctor and their patient!)
This a good start, but we have a lot of work to do to complete the puzzle and fix things up around here!

Several reasons.
I’m an ex grower and ex smoker. And legality or not, weed is a negative on society and most individuals. I have absolutely no doubt that on average, it will demotivate, depress, and cause several negative effects on people.
People’s drives and ambition are suppressed in my opinion when they become addicted and smoke on a regular basis. No matter how many individual examples you show me of people who smoke and are successful, I believe that they would do even better without, on average.
While I have equally anecdotal examples that support your claims, I really think it comes down to dosage, intent, setting, and habit. Strain and how it was grown also has an impact, although that might be getting too granular for a wider discussion. If I do anything every day, and have no restraint when I do it (which is how a lot of users treat weed) it will destroy my life no matter what it is I'm doing.
I'll give you a hypothetical. In a world where cheeseburgers are criminalized, if I go to back alley McDonalds with a friend at 11PM and am like, "Dude, I have a hookup on burgs." then we eat 20 each, and we do this almost every night, our health and wellbeing is going to rapidly decline. This is how most users view and use marijuana. They go balls to the wall almost every night, and turn into little dope fiends constantly chasing a numb.
If it was as common and unstigmatized a drug as beer, weed culture would be much much different. We would have sayings like, "Beer before liqour never been sicker." our parents would tell us stories about the one crazy night they greened out and how much they regret going that far. We would talk about reasonable limits.
I’ve had a similar experience. I also now have canibinoid hypermesis syndrome, and have a lot of perspective on both sides. Moderation is key, and that can be challenging when it’s so abundant, available, and potent.

Laws, not rules. It's the way the United States came about and is 100% by design and intentional. States rights (local laws) are extremely important because the founding fathers were intelligent enough to realize that local government can do a far better job serving its people and communities than federal government can.

California legalized it for "medicinal purposes" in 1996 (Prop 215) and it was so lax that basically anyone could get a medical card. This had the paradoxical effect of delaying full ("recreational") legalization until after Colorado, Washington and Oregon had already done it. On the other hand, this also gave California the benefit it lacked in 1996 - that of being able to look at how other states did their legalization laws & seeing what aspects worked well & what didn't.

It is illegal to do any valid scientific studies since cannabis is illegal on a federal level. Is the psychosis truly from cannabis or pesticides that may have been sprayed on it? Pesticides and mercury amalgams can cause mental illnesses, so were those ruled out as the cause?
Anecdotal testimonies are not acceptable "science". Anecdotal testimonies are not allowed with alternative therapies, either. I let everyone know THC has self-treated my DVT and kept it from recurring for the last 10 years without rat poison (Coumadin), but that can't be accepted as a medical treatment for others.

@@masondipple2650 it is exactly for those reasons I like to consume CBD dominant strains with just the smallest amount of THC. it relaxes me, one of the very few things in this world that does however super paranoia can be a thing when you smoke, you're totally correct on that. it took me a few experiments (lack of a better word) but I figured out dominant CBD strains had no paranoia or depressive effect on me.
So I lived in Colorado during the beginning and was a nurse. The incidents in pneumonia skyrocketed. Since then I moved to Oregon, then they started. The amount of kids smoking and eating it in Oregon is crazy. They use the dab pens in the classrooms, smoke it on the bus and 3rd graders are bringing it to school. Of those kids their anxiety has increased to the point they need to smoke it everyday to participate in society. That doesn't mean going to college or anything, that means getting out of bed. The cases of marijuana caused hyperemesis has increased at the hospital too.
We will soon find out the risks and repercussions associated with frequent use of marijuana. Just another way to keep us addicted, distracted, ignorant and in debt.

I completely agree that it should be decriminalized. I'm not sure that it should be _normalized_ though. While it's mostly harmless for most people, it can certainly become a problem for some. Indeed, it's actually quite dangerous for people predisposed to certain psychiatric conditions. It can cause them to present at a younger age, which statistically makes lifetime outcomes (including life expectancy itself) much worse. We also don't really understand the effects on growing brains, but they probably aren't good...and those same brains are by far the most likely to try the stuff.
Old propaganda like "Just say no" and "DARE" were very misguided in wildly over-stating the risks. "Gateway drug" and all that BS. The problem is that the pendulum has now swung too far in the other direction, such that people seem to think it's _completely_ safe. Not so.
I'm not entirely sure what my "ideal policy" would be, but for one thing I don't think dispensaries should be able to advertise the way that they do. Tobacco can hardly advertise at all, alcohol is heavily restricted, and both must include legally-mandated warnings. Yet I drive by half a dozen dispensary billboards every day. I think closer parity is in order there.
I'm an EMT in Colorado and I've transported patients who were reported on "cannabis psychosis". I have seen that weed can exacerbate symptoms during a psychotic episode (the clinical term, not just saying it), but every patient I've seen that was diagnosed had a history of the same symptoms before they started smoking.
Agreed, I'm thinking more research into the long-term effects is truly needed before any big moves in either direction happen.

South Park had the best take on weed in my opinion. It’s not gonna kill you, and if you’re not operating heavy machinery or have prior mental illness or psychosis, it’s not even gonna hurt you. But it can make you okay with doing nothing, and not being productive, so if you get too comfortable using it too much at a young age, you might look around one day and realize you haven’t done as much with your life so far as you might’ve wanted.
I am thrilled that it’s legal in most places now; it’s undoubtedly safer than alcohol and tobacco (in most of the forms in which tobacco is commonly available), and nobody should have to spend time in prison or face fines simply for consuming it. But, I think it needs to be regulated more in similar ways to alcohol and tobacco, and honestly I’m sure it will. 10 years seems like a long time but most legal states decriminalized far more recently and it took way longer than 10 years for the tobacco industry to be properly regulated. Given time, I think it’ll feel like just another legal drug.

In many legal states, the illegal pot market still outsells the legal one, and because of decriminalized possession, there are many loopholes being used to sell weed, such as club donation systems and gift systems, like “join this club, donate the exact amount that this weed would cost, and we’ll give you exactly that much weed as a thank-you” or “but this $40 bic lighter and it’ll come with a free eighth.” It’s way too easy right now for dealers to keep doing exactly what they were doing when pot was illegal, which sort of defeats the purpose of legalization in the first place, since those people aren’t selling regulated product and they’re not contributing any tax revenue to the states. Alcohol and tobacco regulations also faced similar problems at first, but eventually everything was shored up, and now it’s even rare to be able to get a loosie in most places. That’s all I’m saying. Pot regulations need time to catch up before that industry is gonna feel as ‘legitimate’ (for lack of a better word) as alcohol and tobacco do.

There are many reasons why that isn’t the case. First, since it’s been decriminalized on the state level and not on the federal level, those things you stated are not consistently true across all of the states in which pot is legal. Second, we’re talking about a completely different industry in terms of production and distribution, where different states have different laws about who is allowed to be a farmer, who is allowed to be a vendor, and whether someone is allowed to be both. Which creates a litany of problems, like in New York for example, where regulated vendor infrastructure is miles behind production infrastructure, so you have barely any state-approved dispensaries, and loads of state-approved farmers whose stock is just sitting around (New York is not the only state where this has happened but it’s the best example). This is a big issue when you’ve decriminalized possession and use, because naturally people are going to want to try it, and people who’ve been doing it are going to keep doing it, through the already-established illegal infrastructure that they’ve been using for years. So then you have situations where storefronts like delis or headshops are using legal loopholes to sell pot, like “buy this $40 bic lighter and get a free 8th” or “become a member of our club, donate $40, and we’ll give you a free 8th,” type stuff. Which means that people are getting their pot, so they’re not at all worried about the state-approved vendor shortage, and by extension they’re not worried about the predicament that state-approved farmers are facing. And at the end of the day, when someone gets their pot like that, the product still isn’t regulated to be ‘safe’ by government standards, and the state isn’t seeing any tax revenue, which is the entire purpose of legalization in the first place. These are just examples of some of the legal loopholes that need to be fixed, there are plenty more.
Some states have dealt with these issues better than others have, but the fact of the matter is that there is waaaaaay more illicit and black-market activity happening with cannabis than there is with tobacco or alcohol, even in states like Colorado that have been legal for a long time now. I feel like when you saw the word ‘regulation’ your mind went to use and purchase, but that’s a very small part of regulating a substance industry. When I say that in time it’ll feel like another legal drug, I mean that eventually we’ll get sorted as a country, and it will be as you described it, where anyone 21+ can buy government-regulated cannabis from a government-approved vendor, and pretty much nowhere else. That just isn’t reality right now.

I was just in Colorado not long ago. for a state with so much tax revenue, it was a dump and there were homeless everywhere. Also this video failed to mention that Colorado spends nearly 4 times the amount of tax revenue they make, on drug related and caused issues.
You should talk about the increase in homelessness and drug addiction in Colorado. Maybe also talk about the increase in traffic violations.
Homelessness could be caused by many other factors, I doubt weed is the cause of it.
Not to mention what *kind* of drugs are people becoming addicted to. Marijuana itself isn't physically addicting in the way that other drugs are. Homelessness is caused by Colorados massively inflated housing costs. A home costing me 200k where I live is easily over 500k in Colorado. Saying "weed is causing homelessness" is f*cking stupid. Sure, there are definitely some cases here and there where people have ruined their lives over it, just like ANY substance that produces psychoactive effect.

Having grown up in Colorado, my personal view of marijuana has grown to be overwhelmingly negative. I believe marijuana should be allowed for medical use, it's something my grandfather relies on for his chronic pain. Although I'm against recreational.
Yes the state made a lot of money off the marijuana, although I strongly disbelieve it goes back to the people. The state has become significantly unsafe, there's more homeless people, Boulder and Denver has became a craphole of a city, and the money definitely does not go towards public infrastructure or the police. And yes, I contribute a main reason of that to be because of marijuana.
Why hire more police, it would create problems, have you ever had a civil conversation with a person who is high? They wouldn’t care what police say, and that would escalate very fast.

I’ve lived in Colorado my whole life and the last ten years have made it especially horrible in my city. I’m pretty sure there’s more pot shops than restaurants at this point. The roads are terrible, the hospitals are overwhelmed, and the homeless problem is worse than it was before by a lot so yeah we’re doing real great 😀
What does all the other things have to do with cannabis? You act like the homeless crisis is caused by it, when its caused by wage inequity and lack of an actual Healthcare system, and that is the dame issue in every major city regardless of politics or legal weed.

I personally will never smoke, my brain would not like it. But I'd more prefer someone smoke weed than drink alcohol. Kinda strange to think it's only been 10 years. The effects of marijuana are very tame compared to heavy alcohol consumption.

Each time you drink alcohol you lose about 200-2000 brain cells. Set tabacco and alcohol to the same level as marihuana or set marihuana to the same level as alcohol and tabacco.

Except if you smoke anything, you are forcing people nearby to smell the toxins. Alcohol doesn't emit anything. No matter the drug, people need to deal with your altered state of mind. Public drunkenness gets you arrested, if you smell like alcohol you will get a fine, at that point you're causing problems for everyone else with the smell same as noise pollution. However you can walk through the streets smelling like pot and that's fine. Fine vs fine. Even though weed smells worse and you can die from second hand smoke.
