- Long lost footage (at least to me) of the version of the Don Ellis Orchestra that preceded the group that recorded the Montreux album. It's from a network TV appearance of the band performing Don's arrangement of "Sweet Georgia Brown", written especially for Shirley Maclaine.
When I was conducting one of Shirley’s opening acts in 1980 and 1981 in Vegas, I would watch this amazingly gifted powerhouse of a woman doing
these dance routines 2 shows a night, for 14 nights in a row. Her dance group would run off stage after the opening song gasping for air while Shirley
calmly approached the microphone to greet her audience. Shirley’s show was by far, the absolute best that Vegas had to offer. I’m not sure if anyone
other than the musicians and dancers, even had a clue just how professional and dedicated she was to giving her audience the best that they could
ever hope for and more. Thanks Shirley, you amazed me and your audience every time you graced the stage.
What a talented artist. Love her! I love watch her as Mrs. Levinson in Down town Abbey. Great performance!
I LOVE YOU SHIRLEY!!!!!
Shirley is an amazing dancer!!!
WOW! WOW! She has had an amazing long life in entertainment. Lovely performance here Shirley. thank you for all your hard work! WOW!
I was (and am) a huge fan of Ellis, so when I heard that he was going to on the Shirley MacLaine variety show, I was ecstatic. Of course, in those pre-VCR/DVR days, it was one-and-done, so I'd given up hope of ever hearing this again. Thank you for proving me wrong!
Shirley was not only the consummate actress but also a fabulous dancer.
I played with the Don Ellis Band in Jan. Feb & March of 1972 On Baritone sax, oboe,Bass Clarinet, soprano sax& Piccolo
Thanks for sharing this Gerry!
Gerry Cappuccio ........That's an experience you'll ALWAYS have with you. Recently I made a list of the gigs I've played (in the days before amplification was standard) and was surprised at the miscellaneous bits that stuck in my mind: the coldest hall, the unison trumpet/alto phrases, a drum solo, a Pebble Beach gig, etc. Sometimes I couldn't remember all the guys/gals in the group; sometimes I remembered bits of conversation during the breaks. I never played with Ellis but I remember the night I heard his Electric Bath album on the car radio and the next day I HAD to buy it. Still have it. And YOU had a unique experience that many of us wish we had.
Shirley Maclaine was always such on "out there" personality - so great!
AND of course NOT to forget the Eminent dancers....music....IT ALL
MARVELLOUS
Miss Maclaine is multi talented. She can dance with perfection she can act perfection all the way around.
David, Thanks for posting. I've never seen this
Now THIS is modern jazz dance...
This was filmed exactly during the time the movie Out on a limb was all about. The part 2 of Out on a limb where she was in Peru happened in 1977. While in Peru, David picked up a news paper and mentions the famous black out in New York which occured in 1977. It's nice to connect the dots.
a magnificent dancer!
Wow! I had no idea she could dance...and wow can she dance!
She is so adorable looking in this dance routine!
She started out her career on stage in 1954 dancing in the musical Pajama Game and appeared in several movie musicals through the 1960s.
Check out Sweet Charity - from 1969
she was a dancer before she was an actress. She had no formal training as an actress, but won an academy award. Was true for many stars in those days.
OMG! Amazing 💞
It's hard to make the case to young'uns these days that the 1970s was a better, healthier time for music than it is now with stuff like this out there!
They're idiots who don't understand how to imagine, dream or dare. They're also pathetically lazy and self-victimized. Outside of this they are a right fine lot.
Wow. I have just discovered a great dancer. I knew her as n actress
OK I’ve BEEN A FAN OF SHIRLEY MCLAIN NOW EVEN MORE !!!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿😁
Cool. Back when they showcased real talent on tv shows.
I think everyone misses the days where there was real talent? Today's garbage is an affront to Cabaret and the performers of the 70's, 80's and early 90s.
Beautiful
Shirley Mclaine is such a tidy hoofer. Walking it through with those great legs I'm thoroughly entertained every time I've watched her dance. At no time does she fail to astound me with her unique majesty of style panache or rhythm. Why would she words fail me just inspirational.. Modesty and beauty in motion.
Shirley Mc Laine....A Masterpiece

Shirley Maclaine is talented as hell. She has been living in teh middle of NOWHERE at Abiqui new Mexico.
+Chris Pritchett, yes, one of the most beautiful and talented women in humankind history, IMHO!
Sedona?
Shirley súper talentosa
Great
Don sounded like Bud Brisbois on that 1 st
solo!
Dave, this is your You Tube channel?
Офигеть!!!
Greatby
I guess so. Must have been a terrifying shock for poor Don.
Must be from 1973 or a short time afterward, following the release of "Connection" since Don has no beard, but still has the sideburns. Not quite as clean-shaven as he was in 1977.
Немного мужиковата, но всегда классная, глаз не оторвать! !
