    I am in the same situation with my BC. Murphy. I took puppy classes with him and then the pandemic happened and no one came over and we went no where for about a year, then his brother got ill with cancer and became the focus of my attention (and I had some health issues in there too). When Drift died, Murphy got really weird and reactive. I could not longer go for walks with him because he reacted to every car, every yarded dog, and every person. Walking had lost all the fun. I just wanted a dog whom I could take to the park, to stores, to the trails, and enjoy activities with him--and inevitable, I compared him to Drift (the best off the best). We are working on these things now. Walking is MUCH better, but he is very reactive to other dogs and got kicked out of daycare.

    I am so grateful for your channel. I love our twelve week old BC, and he's doing his best. I just need to bring myself back to center, and your videos help me get there. (Now to keep working on teaching him not to pull down our toddler's pants! 👖)

      Yes, they can sure be a handful! lol Sometimes it helps to set smaller goals and really celebrate them when we achieve them! That's what I'm doing. When I look at the little things Skene has recent achieved I realize they all add up and that he is continually progressing. Keep on keeping on! You will be an awesome team! I love your analogy about the good and bad teachers! Man, oh man I had a couple horrible ones my last year of high school! They really diminished my self confidence.😔 When I say Sally was a "healer"... those teachers were a pretty big reason I needed healing in the first place. Sally came to me a couple years after that and made a huge difference in me. A healing only she could perform. Such a special dog.❤🐶
    Lately, I've been thinking about writing a book about my experiences with her...🤔

    I need advise !! I just recently got a 12 week old border collie pup and he is the sweetest puppy but nipping and biting has been a big problem. We have tried lots of ways to train him to stop but there isn’t much of improving. We have two children at home, 5 year old and 10 year old. We all love to cuddle and play with him but at times he can get a bit overly excited and start nipping our hands and face. My children arent afraid of him but I’m starting to get uncomfortable when they play without me watching. We are starting puppy training classes on Saturday at pet smart. He is veryyyy smart and learn commands very quickly but the nipping is the main behavior that we really want to fix quick. Any advise we be great thank you so much !!!

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  4 года назад +2

      When your pup goes to nip you, give him a toy or a tug right away and direct his attention always to the toy instead of you. If he gets overly excited and if he is wearing a collar you can manage him by holding the collar for a moment and not allowing him to bite. If he won't settle down chances are he is overexcited and then it's a good time to give him a break with something to chew in a contained crate. I hope that helps!

    Hi, I have a gorgeous 5 month old collie who is great fun and been easy to train but I would love some advice about one behaviour please?? As soon as he sees another dog approaching he lays down, stares and won't budge, he then lunges to play when close. I am aware that this is a breed thing but would like to keep him moving!! Treats, commands etc do not work. He is very confident so am pretty sure not a fear based behaviour. Please help, I can't find any videos on it.

      I'm working on a video about puppies biting right now! Stay tuned, should be up in a couple of days. Remember that when pups get really excited like that, they are often overtired and overstimulated, plus they are teething. Often the best thing that you can do is put them in a crate with something to chew and cover the crate. (After you have pottied them, given them access to water etc.)

    Janet, I started with the chasing of birds. Aeon runs at them and as soon as they leave he comes back.
    He’s so damn fast that he actually runs them over. He didn’t hurt them, they looked pretty insulted. I’m not too sure I was pretty busy laughing. I am positive that they were not hurt.
    Moving rabbits has proved to be even more fun. Instead of scaring them he’s friending them. Will I have to take them in as his pets?

    What do you do about overstimulation? My new adopted border tries to lunge at cars on walks, and is also starting to hyperfocus on shadows or lights on my ceiling.

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  4 года назад +1

      Have a look at this video: ruclips.net/video/cYu1_eNWXos/видео.html Also, if the walks are stressful, sometimes doing training games instead of walking is more beneficial for the dog. With some dogs that focus on shadows or lights, having rest time in a crate is really important. You can cover the crate so that your dog doesn't see the distractions. My dog Keegan will fixate on things too and I am doing a lot of boundary games. I'll be doing a video on that at some point but it's basically rewarding them with food to stay on a boundary; could be a raised bed, a dog bed, a mat, really anything. Some dogs really have to be taught to relax.

    • @halobhasker5690
      @halobhasker5690 4 года назад

      The Dog Vlog this is so helpful, thank you! Is there a way to desensitize her to the cars? I’ve been trying to control the lunging by stopping and distracting, but she finds them more interesting than me or treats. I feel that walking is worth the risk because she has so much energy, and running her a little helps with that.
      Additionally, yes her fixation is only in certain rooms where car lights are reflecting in the house, so I will try to limit her time in those areas! (She does sleep in her crate at night, and sometimes during the day when she’s tired.)

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  4 года назад +1

      Boundary games. I will have to do a video on this soon. Reward them to stay on a boundary - could be a raised bed, a dog bed, a couch, a mat. They need to learn to settle because some just can't on their own.

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  4 года назад +1

      When my puppy starts to bite a lot, I know he needs a nap! I give him something to chew - a frozen Toppl (kong), or a hoof with a little wet food inside - and I put him to bed in the crate. I usually have to cover the crate too because he will watch everything going on! Your puppy is probably overtired, they need to sleep a lot more than we sometimes realize.

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  4 года назад +1

      They can be like toddlers on too much sugar! Probably he needs a good, long nap! They go through various teething stages until their adult teeth come in so biting is part of this. Make sure he has lots of safe things to chew - I like hooves filled with tripe that I freeze, you can use bully sticks, canned food in a hoof or Kong or Toppl. You can reuse the hooves several times so they are good value. Good luck!

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  4 года назад +2

      @@tzurtex6336 my little pup is around the same age and he will get overexcited and bite if I let him! My next video will include a game called Toy Switch so watch for it - basically keep him focused on toys instead of your hands or pant legs. But when my little pup starts grabbing at my pant legs I know that is is puppy nap time! They are teething so the biting isn't aggressive but you don't want to encourage them to get over excited or to bite YOU. :)

    I haven't watched your follow up videos yet but I think what you've said in this one has made me realise what I've probably felt but not articulated.
    I've had two rescues; first Meg, a female super aggressive, one person only, no other pets, no kids etc type who just about tolerated me (loved her to bits though) and currently Mij, a total opposite hyper sensitive interactive maniac 😁. They are polar opposites but both - I think - caused me more to look at myself. Changing *my* behaviour and outlook I think was probably 50% of the answer. I can't put my finger on it exactly though.
    As I say, I think that's what you hinted at here. Time for me to watch the others. Thank you!

      In dog training I see a lot of people making quick judgments about both dogs and their owners/trainers. Truthfully every dog is unique and the best approach is the approach that works for that particular dog. Some people who have only had really “easy” dogs can believe they are great trainers, but it is actually the more challenging dogs that teach us training skills. But they can also make us look like terrible trainers! lol And yes I do believe outlook is half the battle. One thing I have realized as well is that training is not a thing that you do for half an hour a day and then it’s over. Training is about every moment of a dog’s life and what they experience. For my dog Skene, he had a lot of restrictions because of his surgery recovery and so it has been really important for him to have fun with me and build up a positive relationship, even though he can be easily distracted and sometimes vocal. Small training steps can make huge differences in how our dogs perceive the world. With dogs that don’t behave as we expect, it’s so easy to label them or blame them. Dogs learn patterns that make sense to them, but sometimes not to us, and we can most often influence and change those patterns. It’s actually pretty exciting how much we can influence a dog’s character once we have a good strategy!
      Good for you sticking it out with dogs that haven’t been so easy! They teach us so much!

    Oh boy! Sometimes I’m too frustrated with attention barking. “Play with me. Let me out. Gimme that!” In my best moments I ignore the behavior I don’t want and then treat at the first opportunity.

    I have a great solution for my Border Collie’s misbehaviour. I tell him I’m going to trade him in for a cat. Sound dumb? Try it. It really frustrates them. Another one I use is that he’s a delicacy in certain countries and I can buy a plane ticket online. (This can backfire if he steals your phone)
    I really never have trouble with Aeon, he’s so damn good it’s almost scary.
