Anybody remember back in the early 2000s when the folks working on MPEG compression claimed that the next generation of audio compression was going to be the development of some magic algorithm that could deconstruct the parts of a song and recompose them in a sort of sequenced, sheet music form ala MIDI format to produce the most concise informational representation of a given audio recording? And isn’t it weird that now that we have that magic algorithm (check out newer suno continuations that can preserve the original instrument set almost exactly), nobody seems to remember to finish that particular challenge? Like even as a proof of concept showing how an ai kernel of some fixed size trained on all the worlds music up to that point can improve upon the best known compression strategies from a file size perspective
