Ok i have a question 4u so my bedroom has no overhead light but has a lightswitch but idk what its for but my husband installed recessed lights in ceiling and wants to change the old switch to a new dimming light switch but he wants to know how do u wire that new from old switch but not cut off power from outlets in bedroom?
I live in California My toggle switches currently are not grounded...it looks like the box the wires are in is plastic...should I still add a ground? Or is it not necessary?
I am new on channel , liked videos installations electric, I am electrician , am from brazil , congratulations liked channel .
Electrical tape around the terminals is best practice
Can you use a house dimmer on a 12v car like to control a fan
The black cables can be crossed?
hey i like your videos, when i have a dimmer switch do i need a special light bulb or can i use a regular bulb? when i turn on the switch that has a dimmer the light flickers and i will have to move the dimmer to make it stop but in minutes it will flicker again
Some bulbs are not compatible , it will say on the package if they are dimmable.
The black terminal is the line right ?
What wire was the live wire
Have dimmer to install, 14-2 wire, white to white, black to black plus ground, my question is the white wires indicate current with voltage tester, in your Video, no mention of white wires but could see them in box. Also wires from light to switch box, does black wire attach to dimmer and black wire from breaker become second wire on dimmer, if so all white stay connected in box with wire nut, is this the correct method, DONT want to trash $32.00 dimmer THX ERIC
My forum is the best place for these discussions , please post your questions there and we can walk through it. www.house-improvements.com/forums/
I have a dimmer on a fan that does not have a pull chord with the three speeds. Anytime you turn down the fan speed from highest setting with the switch, you can hear the motor on the fan get louder. Is this something I can fix with a different dimmer switch?
Actually I'm not sure you want to run that style of fan that way. Best to ask that question in my forum and the electricians there can maybe give you more insight on that. www.house-improvements.com/forums/
Aside from the 3 way wire, I’ve seen a wire screwed to the backside of the metal shell making it difficult to access and understand what wire goes where. I’m in the USA.
Do you have a more comprehensive electrical video series that covers the various types of setups someone might encounter?

Yes how i try to install a single pole dimmer where a regular switch was install but when i check the wires there's three copper wire plus ground wire. The dimmer purchased has two black wire and ground wire. I try to out it without one of the copper wire and didn't work what did i do wrong?
please post in our forum.www.house-improvements.com/forums/
My box has only one black wire and one white wire. Can I install dimmer switch on? Thanks
Yes, you have a switch leg circuit. One of those wires (likely the black ) is the power feed, the other will take the power to the lights.
What is the name of the dimer company
What l am confused about, is every video says there is two black wires, every time l ever changed out a standard light switch or any electrical outlet, theres always a white and black, obviously l need the white wire for power so where do l hook it up at?
White is not power
Nice one, in the video both the wires look black so how do you know which wire is live.
You can test that with a volt meter or buzz stick when the power is on and the light switch is turned off.
Yes I realise that Shannon, I was mainly asking just in case some of your viewers may not know what to do mate. Hope you dont mind. Keep up the good work..
Russell Swindlehurst can't you just look on the original switch to see which one was the positive?
Which wire is live doesn't matter. Either black can go to either terminal screw. All you're doing with a single pole switch is breaking the circuit when it's off and completing the circuit when it's on. The switch itself doesn't care which screw the live wire is on. Of course, you'll want to turn off your breaker and then check that it's dead with a voltage tester before changing out a switch.
the one coming from the bottom of the box is your hot wire, the other wire from the top to the light is your switch leg
The normal light bulb is easy, try LED bulbs + LED panels (eventually + wifi control + IR remote) :) I am solving several places at my flat and such there are several standards exists it´s really pain to solve that (and 3 wire cables are not enough - you need 4-5 wires in the cable)
When you dimmed the light switch all the way down, that that means that the switch is off or it’s just dimming the light bulb?
The light would usually be receiving a limited amount of power still with most dimmers that also have a separate on/off switch
HouseImprovements Is there a light switch out there that has a built in on/off switch that I could just leave to on switch and use the dimmer switch to dim the light bulb out? I asked bc, I have one outlet in the kitchen that when I turn off the light switch, the outlet is no longer receiving power and I have my water cooler dispenser plugged in to this outlet. Thanks!
The two black wires are both HOT, but one of them comes in from the power supply feed and the other one is outgoing. You didn't mention which of those two wires connect to which of the two poles on the dimmer switch. Because if you reversed them, wouldn't the dimmer work in opposite direction?
No
Are there any risks of the light bulb exploding when they use it for long time???
Which of the two wires is the hot wire? 🤔
In the video it is the black wire coming from the bottom area of the box and attached to the bottom screw on the original switch. In your case with the old switch off check which wire has power with a multi meter tester. That will be your hot.
can you do one for a dimmer on a 3 way
Subscribe and keep watching in late April for that one.

You would have more visits if you speak Spanish and insert subtitles into Spanish. For example, look at Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, Enrique Iglesias or the most popular RUclipsrs, they know that singing in Spanish is more profitable than doing it in English. Your knowledge would help many who do not want to leave our side of the river and we just want to be prepared. regards
