Tortle Artificer from the story at 11:57 here! Thank you so much for reading mine, I thought you might get a kick out of it regardless! I also wanted to clarify to folks in the notes: GM is NOT mad about what happened, hence my emphasis on the fact that he was laughing along pretty much the entire time, and the whole group's been reading the comments all day. (we're loving the soap puns, and I'm absolutely vouching we call ourselves the Clean-Up Crew after this)
To those who call it 'bad GMing' for letting that happen, or for giving us 2 levels for blowing up a prison with a major boss in it: in a standard game, it MIGHT be. But at our table, there's a lot of Rule of Funny moments, and as stated in the story itself, it's a light-hearted campaign. It isn't even the first time we've derailed it, and he HAS asked for time off to rewrite things before, which has never been a problem because there's strong communication within the group and we've been very understanding. We haven't had a session since (he's still reorganizing plot points and keeping us abreast of the situation) but I have a very strong feeling we're going to reap the consequences of our actions; you don't blow things up with soap and get away scot-free.

It was such a stupidly clever move that I probably would've been happy to reward too it if I was the GM (but taking time to figure out the plot afterwards is obviously necessary) it'll definitely make for a great campaign moment you'll never forget
I will say I tend to enjoy creative solutions more than direct combat a lot of the time (as a player because I've yet to properly run a session) so I'm probably going to be the person that rewards the stupid-cleverness but I'm also strict enough that there are feasible consequences for actions so no one will get away with openly trying to intimidate a store full of people into giving the players all their money without someone calling the local guard (yes that's an example from one of the games I've played in, we were level 5 characters in a town full of retired adventurers and the aarakocra ranger and my bard's half sister a high elf rogue tried to intimidate the townspeople while we were supposed to be getting a gift for the questgiver wizard after we accidentally burnt her ancient monstera in a dungeon, my bard watched the scene start to unfold and then dipped into a store to avoid being implicated, the two of them got thrown in a prison cell and the warlock tried to break them out by pretending to be a guard who left their uniform inside but declined when asked if they wanted to change into the uniform when they were let in so they were inevitably caught by another guard and thrown in the cell too, My bard then got various messages that were all some variations "Northanaaaa come get us", needless to say she got the gift and then the wizard NPC got the prisoners out after turning them into frogs until they were back in the dungeon)

@@devingunnels3251 A very early fight in this campaign involved the party clearing rats out of the cellar of a bakery. This seemed like fairly easy stuff until we realized there were several dozen of them, a few really big ones, a Rat King and a Rat Prince present. We defeated the rats, our Tabaxi bard going so far as to eat the Rat King whole and the Kobold Rogue pulling an Ozzie Osbourne and biting off the head of the Rat Prince as an intimidation tactic.
A few in-game weeks later (after we killed Cleric's dad and were trying to kind of lie low) we receive a summons because our Kobold is being charged with Regicide. We shrink down to attend this rat court a la Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap and proceed to learn there were witnesses in the rafters of the cellar who apparently saw us kill the King and Prince.
Through a hare-brained sequence of events our Cleric managed to effectively gaslight the Rat Queen into modifying her testimony as she kept pointing out that it was riddled with inconsistencies.
We convinced the GM that this society had Double Jeopardy and despite Rogue actually being responsible for the death of the Rat Prince we got the lawsuit thrown out and paved the way for a Badger to instead take over the now unsettled Rat Kingdom.

Depending how strong your acid is, it can take a lot of base to neutralize and it will fizz up and overflow your container if you use too much at once. In addition, the lye in soap is already neutralized with fatty acids, so soap has close to neutral pH, and wouldn't be that useful for neutralizing a strong acid. If soap was strongly basic, like lye, it would cause severe chemical burns, in which it would basically be your skin and fat tissues that would neutralize the lye and be converted into something resembling soap.

I had a similar situation, I was doing a murder mystery set in an elite magic school.
After examining the body, one of the players turned to the principal and was like "hey, do you have a necromancy department?"
I hadn't considered this at all, and while I could have just said "no there's not" (like you could just say "we're out of soap" here), I find it more fun as a DM when players do come up with stuff because it helps give them ownership of what's going on. I'd rather they destroy something I planned in a way we'll all remember and laugh about than not let them try something creative.
When players destroy things like this, it's not actually a problem. Anything that players skip in a session is just content you can use under a reskin for a later session. Prep never goes to waste, it just gets recycled.

The Soap Story for me is like two sides, one side: Cool that they used knowledge to try and break a mechanic to make their dungeon crawling easier.
On yhe other hand, if the DM is asking ya to like still explore. Throw them like the bone and do him a solid, pretty sure they had excitement for the dungeon with the core idea.
Mean I be a little upset as a player too if we like sequence breaked a bit (Also cause I enjoy doing as much as we can whole sale usually. And unlike the video games theirs no “Save and try again for the fun” mechanic.)

Rest assured we spent the first 3 hours of that session exploring the dungeon and finding clues, then the last hour was us trying to neutralize the acid pit and while we kept making sure the GM was going to allow us to go through with it, he did nothing to prevent our shenanigans.
We also operate on a milestone leveling system as well as a secondary Roger Rabbit Rule. My character (Fighter) gained a level in Barbarian several sessions back because he got very angry and later entered a joy-of-battle flavored Rage by getting to help kill the Cleric's dad (with her permission.)

I played the rogue in that story and I'm very much the same way when it comes to exploring and finding all the "content" in a dungeon. Besides the DM, I was probably the only other proponent for at least doing a bit more exploring before leaving it all to go buy soap (something along the lines of "Why leave when they might have soap in the storage room we haven't checked yet?"). Even so, I had to accept that I was outvoted on this one and accepted my role of using my deception expertise to convince the shopkeeper who witnessed what we just did that it was entirely coincidental and that we hadn't just blown up the city's underground prison system.

If he wanted him to not go this road why even let him roll a stealth. The dm just wanted to make an example of him and purposely made it so he had no save against a door creaking, even in this fake scenario no one just to bursts open random doors when already declaring being stealthy. No Roll or save was offered. It’s clear the DM just wanted to make an example out of this player which is just Petty bullshit so the player I’m not shocked spited him. Player was a creep but the dm should have ended it instantly. DM Is no differnt from a bully who gets everyone else to laugh at one person.

Been off and on running games for a couple years. I do not allow anything sexual of any kind. I dont do flirting or anything. If someone wants to go to a brothel i say you go and find a suitable partner or 2 and fade to black. Thats it at most. I will not stand for anything that might be sexual harassment.

I have a bit of online experience and I'll say these sound pretty true for online games. People tend to lose inhibitions when they're hiding behind a screen and really cut loose when they don't personally know the people they're playing with. You also see gross behavior from people who are really new to DND online because they seem to think it's going to be a RP where anything is possible and they can be the main character, completely forgetting it's a game for everyone.
Frankly discord organized DND with strangers is taking your game life in your own hands lol

I've been gaming for 30 years and I can't say I've never seen Behavior like this before, but usually it's when everybody's in person. Being goofy and silly is easier when you know each other, I could see friends of mine doing something like this. But not as a new player when you don't know your audience. I've got a pretty broad sense of humor but when I'm around people I'm not familiar with I play it close to the vest until I get a feel for what wood and would not fly around them. As somebody else here noted, when someone's behind a screen they seem to lose all common sense and dignity. Not just in role-playing, I've seen it at my job. Covid has really done a number on people's social skills

Guy from the first story here’s what really happened yes I did peak and yes the captain of the guard came out but I asked the dm if I could lie saying I accidentally walked into the wrong bath dm said roll for Deception I rolled a 18 dm rolled a 10 dm said as the guard “that makes sense since your new in this town but I’m still gonna attack you” dm then rolled for attack lucky he rolled low. My character was level 5 and the guard was 10 I wasn’t gonna beat him so I tried to dodge but the dm said “ the room is too small for to really dodge so all you rolls to avoid have disAdvantage I tried to flee not wanting to my character to get wrecked but my party blocked the only door taunting me saying I need to pay for what I did. Finally after seeing I had no other option I rolled to attack again because I’m leveled 5 I was beaten very quickly I was fine with this because I thought “well he’ll just beat my character up and then leave” no after knocking me to one hit point the guard slammed into the bath trying to drown my character. When my character could get his head above water he begged for the party to help asking if I deserve being drowned for something stupid the group in game and out of game just laughed not helping at all eventually my character dies and I just left the group not before the party still laughing their asses off threw my character body outside into the mud.

Oh look, the other side of the story that (assuming it actually happened that way) proves the DM in the first story was the REAL a-hole, how shocking... 😐 And even if it happened the way the DM said, DM is STILL the immature, self-righteous a-hole for vindictively punishing the player over "undesirable behavior*" instead of just putting his big-boy pants on and saying; "No, I don't allow that kinda stuff in my games."
*- "Undesirable behavior" that he EXPRESSLY SET THE STAGE FOR by allowing the character concept in the first place, and then "waiting in ambush" for the inevitable "undesirable behavior" instead of wearing his aforementioned big-boy pants and just vetoing the character concept instead. Y'know, like an actual mature, decent human being would do.
