      Their predicesors were rough riders to. Seams quite common with 060t locos if not balanced properly, as they aint exactly built for high speed. 40mph was prob the max they could be expected to run, even if they could go faster, but suspect even at 40 they were quite "bouncy"

      @@pilotbug6100 I’m for a new build to deliver on what the E-2 was meant to provide but couldn’t - a mixed traffic tank engine. I can already imagine the redesign would un ironically mimic the character design by shortening the wheel base, lowering the center of gravity, and enlarging the coal bunker and that’s before boosting the steaming efficiency with additions like a super heater. In hindsight, similar to Henry, the E-2’s were built with far too small coal reserves and janky optimization

    What I'd like to see as a result of the preservation movement is a new-build of an E2, but built to a better specification, so that it is actually viable for passenger use, and so that preserved railways can have a real Thomas to use for accuracy on their Days Out, and to bring more kids (and moolah) in as a result of the "real Thomas the Tank Engine" appearing at X railway. I'm honestly surprised that it hasn't been done yet.

  • @TKSP4449
    @TKSP4449 5 лет назад +1

    You know, when you talked about the issues with the E2s when they were trialed on passenger and freight (goods) trains, that gave me a bit of an idea: could they have done a bit better if they were fitted with well tanks?
    I got this idea from Billinton's L Class 4-6-4 Baltic tank engines, also known as the 'Brighton Baltics'. When the first two were put into service on passenger trains, they were found to be unstable due to the water surging around in the side tanks, but this was later resolved when they were fitted with well tanks (and the water level in their side tanks were lowered) giving them a lower center of gravity and helping them prove to be much successful.
    So maybe if the Billinton E2s were fitted with well tanks as well, it might've helped with their problems with stability as well as increase their water capacity and the class might've been more successful. That's my theory at least.

    • @davidwhiting1761
      @davidwhiting1761 5 лет назад +1

      I understand the theory, but I doubt converting an E2 into a well tank would solve the issues entirely rather than just make more. The main problems with well tanks and why you didn't see many outside certain circles, with many well tanks being converted to saddle tanks, is because the wells were prone to cracking and leaking down beneath the engine being so close to all the moving parts. Sure you might make the E2 a bit more stable, but you'd have to fill the tank more often due to leaking and you'd have to pull it out of service more often in order to repair cracked tanks. Also how big a tank do you think you'd be able to fit down there? The E2s already had a problem with water capacity when first built, and the spacial limitations of building a well underneath an engine would not solve that issue.

    • @wyattnewcomer402
      @wyattnewcomer402 4 года назад

      You'd also need to give the engines external cylinders and motion to accomidate the tank, which means complete replacement of steam chest\smokebox saddle and extreme footplate surgery to accomidate before you even began modifying everything else to suit (which couldn't justify rebuilding a class of 10 obscure shunters already beset with faults outside of just fuel capacity). However, I must admit I find the idea interesting and may mess about with some dimensions, I imagine the result would look simmilar to Bellerophon (preserved on the Foxfield Railway).

    de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preu%C3%9Fische_T_8
    Built in 1906-1909 it was only good for shunting because of his horrible undercarriage and his tendency to slip and lurch. In the 1920 the German Reichsbahn sold all of them but after the war and the nationalisation in East Germany, they had all of them back. Only because of this circumstances they remaind until 1965 with one (89 1004) remaining engine!

      Both projects have embarrassingly ridiculous goals in mind. One to build another “Real Live Thomas” from the wheel up (to paraphrase Simon Martin), and one to break Mallard’s speed record. The biggest problem with the latter being the class of locomotives had way too many wheel slips to even consider the possibility of breaking such a record.

    • @AtkataffTheAlpha
      @AtkataffTheAlpha 5 лет назад

      @@AndrewHager02 the problems are worth bringing back the past from the dead. We brought back a British engine from the dead, we can do it again. • @AndrewHager02
      @AndrewHager02 5 лет назад

      I mean, if you believe a new PRR T1 will be able to break the speed record once the project’s completed, more power to you. I, on the other hand, understand why such a goal isn’t likely to be reached by such a steam engine. But come to think of it, if they, by luck, manage to fix the wheel slip problems with the new T1, I could imagine its haulage capacity being useful for long trains in mix trafficking services.

    • @AtkataffTheAlpha
      @AtkataffTheAlpha 5 лет назад

      @@AndrewHager02 the railfans aren't going for speed nowadays for steam engines even if they're streamed in the US, what we're going for is to just see the engines of the past roll again. It was in Chris's other videos that I learned that the engines both Whiff and Emily were based on were not designed for heavy goods. But unlike the GNR with their problematic at first J23, the LBSCR never invested into working out the kinks (due to Brighton works being where it was). Not in all cases.
      The Australian short film 'A Steam Train Passes' features no dialogue beyond the opening newsreel. The selling point of most railway archive programs is the footage, not the commentary that comes with it. Film and TV took over from radio as entertainment forms largely because of the power of visual media. Pictures are known to paint 1000 words according to different interpretations of them, but the meaning of an audio recording is usually pretty singular.
      So with SLIPs, it's intended to be a mix of everything.
