If I've learned one thing about barbershop quartets it's that it's 50% singing 50% puns
Exactly! It's a performance, not just music. Although every great quartet should be able to prove themselves with a completely serious song once in a while, most barbershop is quite lighthearted and humorous.

Holly Shue Oh shit, really?? They both have the same kind of humor.
Observation: Main Street and Newfangled Four are each the best at one of the elements of an entertaining Barbershop Quartet. Even if they aren't the best singers every year, they each have a reason they are the most entertaining quartets. Main Street has the more traditional humor of a quartet whereas Newfangled Four has the physicality and physical humor that makes them really unique.

Yeah. There’s also a running joke where Joey, the guy who could tap dance in TNFF, he always is about to tell an inappropriate joke or do something inappropriate but then the rest of the gang stops him. Take their song Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious for an example, he was about to do something and everybody else said “Hey, woah!” And stopped him from doing it

The superhero landing at the end of his routine really sold it for me.
"There once was a man from nantucket..." is the first line to a classic, old,famous, dirty limerick. It changes due to the various bawdy words that rhyme with nantucket (use your imagination).
I personally think it’s harder to sing on pitch blend and be funny as well than be a straight quartet but it seems to be a setback with the judges

Yeah, I'm proud of myself when I'm funny OR singing well, nowhere near ready to attempt both simultaneously!
I think part of it is, it's tough to do all of those at the same time. When rehearsing/getting coached, it's hard to touch and tweak ALL of those things.
That's why it took Fred so long to win.

This just goes to show how good these guys are and how hard barbershop can be. As soon as they can play off another person and tune their part not only to the other 3, but their own as well, it makes everything super clean and locked-in. Both quartets are amazing apart, but together this is truly ear candy
You know what I like about this?? There's no egos no insults, just a bunch of guys throwing freindly jabs, and genuinely having a good time. I bet they all shared a beer afterwards well done!!
I was there for that. My first Mid-Winter Convention and it was great, very cosy. You could talk and sing with anyone. 1/3 of the attendees were over 60, Seniors Contest, and knew lots of songs like this one I hadn't heard in decades. And 1/3 were teenagers because of the youth chorus show. Preserving and encouraging.
