Thank you so much for these videos Jelena! They have been incredibly helpful to me. I was diagnosed Sept 2020 and am almost recovered from my reversal. Go me!!! My physical well-being seems to be ok, but I know my thinking isn't totally rational right now. I definitely have some of that carpe diem stuff happening (planning a trip to Harry Potter World, Vegas and working on my passport), but I also find myself getting really irritated with people when they complain about birthdays or the fact that they are getting older. I want to scream at them that getting old is gosh darn privilege, I hope to god I live long enough to get wrinkles and age spots! My question is, does this fade? Does it get better with time?
Way to go on making it through treatment and the reversal! 💪🏼 As far as not being as irritated about the complaining, it takes time and some work. You’re still pretty close to ground zero of facing death and knowing how precious life is. There will always be complainers, so you’ll just eventually learn that their complaints aren’t worth your time and start tuning them out and surrounding yourself with more people that appreciate the privilege of growing older.
hi Sarah, I've also joined 'this family' and Jelena is my new best friend. I haven't had any treatment yet: I still have a long way to go. But the part of the complaints I have had my share, too. A colleague I know had the audacity to complain to me (after knowing my case) that she had to have an endoscopy for self-provoked vomiting! And they complain to me of the very same things you mention. God bless you and I hope you are fully recovered.
I was diagnosed with Stage 1 rectal cancer in September of 2022 weeks after I turned 71. What triggered my diagnoses was an incident where I passed a lot of blood in a bowel movement. I went to Emergency and was scheduled an urgent colonoscopy the next day. The doctor found 2 polyps and a mass in my rectum which was cancer. Scans showed it had not spread beyond the rectum. I went through 28 radiation treatments with chemo. In mid December a PICC line was installed for me to receive FOLFOX chemo via IV. I had 8 cycles and finished in mid April 2023. Since then my scans have shown me to be cancer free. I chose to forgo surgery and do “ Wait and watch”. I am still dealing with many of the issues that you talk about. Thank for sharing your experiences . I have found it helpful as I have gone through my journey with cancer.
You are so right about what goes on behind the scenes after your cancer treatment is finished. I share many of the same issues you deal with. My soon to be ex-wife thought once my LAR surgery was successfully completed I was good to go. And due to the nature of colorectal surgery she didn’t really want to hear any of the physiological issues I was dealing with. So it’s even more challenging when you don’t have someone to share all the details of life’s challenges after treatment is completed. Neuropathy in my feet is one of my most challenging issues to deal with on a daily basis. My cancer stage was lllc, almost stage lV. I feel incredibly lucky to have had a very positive outcome from my treatments. Given the severity of my tumor I could have easily had a very different and far worse outcome. I feel blessed to be where I’m at.
I’m so sorry that your wife just didn’t understand or want to deal with the aftermath of your treatment. Unfortunately, you aren’t alone and many marriages don’t survive a cancer diagnosis. Don’t hesitate to reach out to other survivors to make connections with others going through similar miseries. It’s made a world of a difference for me.
@@SurvivorJelena Jelena, your channel has been very helpful to me. I’m grateful that you’ve invested your time and emotions in putting this together. It’s been a wonderful resource. I’ve made a few cancer “survivor” connections. Even one from Norway. Unfortunately two of them have passed away. But it was so nice to have known them, virtually, and it was helpful to me to have those connections. I guess that’s the reality of having cancer. Survivorship can be a tenuous proposition. Thanks again for all that you do and your positivity!!
Yeah, ultimately losing some of them is the only downside to making friends that have also been diagnosed with cancer. It’s tough even when they’re “just” internet friends.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. You come thru as such a strong positive person, you are a great example for what a positive attitude looks like! I also am fighting cancer, diagnosed in 2014, it is Multiple Myeloma, a bone marrow cancer. I am taking notes as you speak!
I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Rectal Cancer July 2020, I did not have to have chemo thank the Lord, I have digestive issues, and feel so guilty when I have a pity party for myself when I have bad stomach days which is most days. My ileostomy was removed November 2020, I just recently had to go back in and have my colon reopened because it had almost closed. I can relate with so much that you're talking about! It does change you in so many ways! Loved the video!
Congrats 🎈🍾🎊 again! So awesome you are c-free over five years now. Way to go! Hoping for same result after having undergone similar treatment to you. Stage 2 but complete response after surgery so very good news. Anyway, Keep it up. Your videos are inspiring and a salve for fellow survivors. Alex
That’s great news you had a full response from treatment! I hope you get to celebrate your 5 years too 🤞🏼💙 Happy to be here to help out fellow survivors 😀
Thank you so much. It made me feel less alone. I feel each of those now that I am 4 month days out of chemo. These are things that you never consider when going through it.
Hey Jelena, as always this was helpful. I recognize some of the things that you mentioned here.. one of the things that I'm dealing with is neuropathy in my hands and feet. I'm on medication for it now which seems to be helping. I do have a question for you, how long after your last chemo treatment was your port removed? I'm waiting for my Oncologist to give me the green light on that. Anyway thanks again for sharing 🙂
I’m glad to hear the medication is helping with your neuropathy. I had my port removed when I had my ileostomy reversed, but a lot of people will wait a little longer than that before they want it removed.
Mam 2 months completed robotic lar but patient still can't walk and sit..and he has sever leg and leg finger pain.we saw this the doctor also but he said give good food.u have in idea in this condition
Thank you for this most informative video! Hearing the symptoms you’ve goner through makes me feel a bit better. I had a PET scan this morning. Waiting for the results. But I am having gas issues after my reversal surgery. Gas-X not helping much. And the peripheral neuropathy in my finger tips and feet are now an issue. But just to hear that I’m not alone with my symptoms is the best medicine. And I do love the blue hair.
My Dad suggested I try Bean-o to see if that helps my has but I haven’t had a chance to get to the store to buy any yet. Perhaps that may help? Keeping my fingers crossed for you on your PET scan results 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼💙
@@SurvivorJelena PET scan was good. But a CAT I just had showed something of interest in one of my lungs. I’ll need another scan in 2 months. Guess I’ll have the scan done down south.😊👍 I can never win.
You've healed well, no keloids scars. Battle scars are a badge of honor for the fight, you won. I know we see the good stuff, not the utter fear and depression you must have suffered.
Love your videos, I was wandering now that your at 5yrs cancer free do you worry any more that the cancer will come back? I was stage 2 and I'm at 2and a half years and I get scared , I hope it gets better with more time 😔
I was definitely still scared at 2.5 years. I’m not too worried now, especially since my blood work and scans have shown nothing at all for 5 years. I will still be getting colonoscopies, going to my primary doctor every year, and paying close attention to my body. If anything doesn’t seem right they’ll welcome be back and run a slew of tests to see what’s going on.
Thanks so much for this most informative video. Frankly speaking you "were born again" .That's how I see it. I especially like the parts on anxiety and mental health. You are a role model for everyone. You are the epitome of bravery. My greetings and love from Spain.❤️

But it sounds like most of the damage you have is mostly from the treatment not from the tumor or cancer
Yes, most of the damage is from the treatment, but without the treatment I would be dead by now.
