I don't think it has to do with them being women's cases. While men's issues are not even considered issues. Recently in a suicide case of a man, it was clearly written in his suicide note that he did it because of abuse from his wife and her family. Still no action was taken against her . Infact, the judge said that his freakin suicide note wasn't strong enough to punish her.
Mumbai High court recently stated forced rape by husband is not considered rape, this country needs a lot of progression to do, men had to use 377 section to make assualt seem an actual serious thing and not 'its no big deal' narrative is in itself shameful,, sexual violence should be treated as assualt no matter who it involves

I remember watching Badri Ki Dulhania and being horrified about the way the scene turned out. At the beginning of the scene, I was actually glad that this issue was being showcased. But turns out, it was for comedic purpose. What makes me more sad is that Varun and Alia are from relatively new generation. They should have denied to play a scene like that. Also, about the representation of LGBTQA+ community. Its saddening to see the presentation of gay men as predatory/unnnecessarily feminine. Straight men can be feminine too. As a feminist, I would say, the principle of feminism is based on equality. Men should be just as safe as women in the society, physically or emotionally.

People don't realise that being a part of LGBTQ+ community is a concept of sexuality. It's not everything that shapes how you live. Every gay man isn't going to be walking in a manner that screams he is gay. Similarly, so many people don't even come to in terms of their sexual preference until a certain situation forces them to see it. So this bizarre idea of children being born and being weird is wrong. I hope people understand how problematic it is, as LGBTQ+ community is already so misunderstood and mistreated.

I believe we need to talk about these things when we actually want equality. Crimes against men are always taken in a light hearted way in Bollywood movies and it is truly disgusting because it inculcates the idea that everything is OK if it happens to a man. This is what creates toxic masculinity when even men shame other men if they have gone through harassment. Equality never means bringing the other gender down and women empowerment shouldn't be used as an excuse to cover up such things and blatantly misuse power. Portrayal of gay men in movies has been so disorienting since ages. Dostana was also one of them. I remember watching it when I was a child and genuinely believing that this is how gay men act. Now as an ally of LGBTQIA+ I feel really terrible when I see such bad portrayals. They do deserve better.

True. Indian films from 80s and 90s portrayed women slapping men if they expressed feelings for them. Also the Gillette "Be Better" ad. A male grooming company, telling its customers that the only way of being better men was by being better towards women. It might seem like a fine message in isolation, but you then realize that any attempt of telling women to be "better" or "real" in respect to how they treat men would be called out as patriarchal and sexist. The whole ad was patronizing as f*ck, yet many celebs and media outlets endorsed it.
Topics like these need to be spoken about more often. I've heard both cases among my friends, on how "I'm scared of Gay men because they'll harass me" and also "I was uncomfortable but she said she'll say that I was harassing her if I say something" both instances are so scary to me and I'm glad we as a society are slowly opening up to accepting a change in attitude towards cases like these.
See, this is how sexism, patriarchy and gender roles and stereotypes affect men too, almost as much as it does to women. Everyone is entitled to their emotions as well as nuance in treatment of assault. Great video essay, it was introspective and thought provoking.
Men and women processes emotions differently. A thing can be very intense for a woman but the same thing can be nothing for a man and vise versa. Just like lack of strength means physically weak , the same way lack of emotions means emotionally weak. But the problem is , instead of creating a safe space for a man to express his emotions , they( mainstream) are trying to impose a women's way handling emotions into a men which is against the evolutionary instincts and biology.

It's not just the movies though .Even during public appearances, male actors are expected to be okay with fans kissing and hugging them. I feel so suffocated for them sometimes.
You could easily make a part 2 of the video, because there is simply so much that is left unexplored. For instance, you haven't talked about the physical violence against men used for comedic purposes. I know slapstick is a thing in comedy, but the sheer amount of female characters slapping male characters overhwhelm the vice verca numbers. And not just that - even in drama films, "slapping the guy" remains a comedic trope. I didn't think much about this until we had Kabir Singh and Thappad, which made me realize the blatant double standards. The male characters in those films slapping the female ones were considered such huge deals, but there was no shred of conversation about the opposite scenario.
For a very long time, not only Bollywood, but also Hollywood and many other film industries look down upon LGBTQ community, and used them purely as a comedic relief. Men are shown as the strong beings who do not cry, do not show their emotions, and it takes monumental events to happen, to make then have a emotional breakdown. It affects the society in the most toxic way possible making men almost emotionless and scared of showing their emotions in fear of being called out on it. The film industries have a huge impact on the youth and society, it is their duty to check what impact it had on the masses.

I think the Vogue video was trying to say that men are often told to suppress their emotions since childhood which may make them violent. It is not always the case though obviously.
the correlation was rather flippant in my opinion. The zero to 100 leap it took was rather jarring to me. Of course there are cases which may manifest that way but such a generalised approach just came across as convenient to me

Not just bollywood there are many movies in the west where I also notice the female heroine and her friends are praised for kicking a man in the nuts or for slapping him when he has done no wrong or it was a genuine misunderstanding from both sides and many scenes like this are made and passed as comedy, which is really not funny anymore or is just so outdated.

This is much needed. Harassment against men is always portrayed as meme content idk why. Being a long time follower of Youth Against Rape , we saw ridiculous comments on this fact from few public. Few months ago ,there was a teacher who raped her 13year old student and there were lots of people defending and making fun of the child saying that he got to "enjoy" sex in such a young age...That just disgusts me as a woman as well as a survivor..Again coming to the recent incident...idk how the police took her case when she's clearly guilty. Its very hard to have a gender equal society without breaking gender stereotypes . I have often seen that men in typical heterosexual relationships look at sex as a prize /achievement and women look at it as a kind of favour this along with the shame of being overpowered by a women creates a lot of shame and confusion and further blur the lines of consent.
I had a friend in college who told us that he lost his virginity at the age of 9. We were shocked, he told us it was with his 15 year old baby sitter. When we told him that it would be considered rape he said no because when he told his father he told him it was experience with an older woman. He’s from Latin America. Where masculinity is very important. I couldn’t believe father would say that to his son. Because if it was other way around, it was his 9 year old daughter with 15 year old boy there would have been hell to pay.

Sadder is the fact that whenever such double standards are brought up or conversations regarding male victims are sparked it is labelled as misogynist. I have lots of discussions regarding the same with my friends and every time when I say how men are disregarded in society it suddenly becomes a victim olympics about how women have it worse despite the conversation not being remotely close to the women's sufferings. When there are activists trying to bring up such problems like Deepika Bhardwaj, they are lynched on the internet, their work is constantly disregarded. The entire mainstream education and media is busy teaching young boys to be apologetic for the things they never did and young girls to take revenge for the things they never faced and fight for the things they already have. No I am not saying women don't face any problems. It's actually necessary that more people speak out about the assault against men. The prime example being that of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The fact that she's still in Aquaman 2 and Johnny got kicked out of the POTC franchise and Fantastic beasts is just the reflection of how world treats the male victims when they come forward.
Assault is no joke, whatever the gender! Coming from a girl, women who assault boys and men make me sick. Never hit the opposite gender unless to defend yourself. Also, Display of emotion is not weak. If you are with the right people you will realise you can breakdown anytime you want and they would still support you.
Physical crimes against people (irrespective of the gender) are nothing but wrong..!! It's not something to laugh about, it's not something to be used to further the plot, it's not a turning point to start empowering the female lead..it's just a crime. I love Pop Culture Detective. The Channel also had a brilliant two-part "Sexual Assault of men played for laughs" video. Whether it's India or abroad, society has very problematic perspectives when it comes to the sexual assault of men. The movie tropes about the assault on men are disturbing. We definitely do need to call it out more.

Honestly Anmol, you are very bold and an honest critic, which is why people like me I love watching your channel because you give different perspectives which many critics do not. I remember when the whole CarryMinati’s RUclips vs Tik-tok video came out and went viral, people automatically started to mock gay men and made lewd jokes about them for their appearance and sexual orientation, portraying them as perverted ‘panzie’ men. I remember when the film virgin Bhanupriya had come out in which the main protagonist’s friend says “Tumne kabhi kisi ladke ka rape suna hai?” That whole line pissed me off so bad. Had it been the opposite people would have immediately boycotted the platform itself. I’m so glad that films like Taish came out (Though it had various other problems in the storyline.) it really brought out the topic of male sexual assault and how men are so vulnerable and traumatised too. Though the film could have dug deeper into Rohan Kalra’s (played by Jim Sarbh) story. But one must appreciate the film for bringing out such a topic which is never talked about. Once again I’m very glad from the bottom of my heart that you brought this issue into the mainstream.
I would love to see a compilation of movies and scenes where these issues were dealt with in a mature and sensitive manner, without romanticising or belittling the struggles or the circumstances. This video highlights what Indian cinema has been doing wrong, I think it'd be nice to see the few instances where it did right.
Back in 1995 when I was just a kid going to school, there was a married woman and her family who used to rent our neighbor's house. Her husband was rarely seen in the house. She used to frequent our house although my mom didn't like her much. She used to touch me inappropriately when nobody was around and it made me very uncomfortable and scary. It was really depressing. I was scared to tell this to my parents. So I shared it with my friends and they started teasing me ever since. One friend of mine told this to a senior class guy and he told me that I was lucky. I used to run away even seeing her at a distance. I was put in a boarding school the next academic year for getting low marks and that's how I escaped that toxicity and bullying at at school. Men/boys are told this is good/lucky which is BS. It's not that I am not attracted to women, but that incident made me understand the concept of consent at a very young age.
I can really relate with you here. I too was a victim of sexual abuse growing up. It's funny how adamant people are at double standards. Women go through awful, awful shit on a daily basis, nobody is denying that. But sometimes people fail to realise that men go through similar shit too. I hate the stigma that men should just bottle up their emotions and learn to take it like "men". That's the exact reason why suicide rates are so damn high among men. Toxic masculinity is unfortunately prevalent in pretty much every society, in some way shape or form. While it's relatively subtle in other more developed countries, it's strikingly apparent in places like India and Pakistan. Males being the subject of domestic or sexual abuse is played for laughs. "Marrd ho Bhai, kyoun rohtay ho?" I used to harbinge a similar mentality growing up, but thankfully I grew out of it. I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone. You have value, you have worth and your problems matter. Don't let anyone try to invalidate that. Men can and do Cry.
I don't understand can't just film industries show equality. Like no need to show male domination abusing women or no need to dominating female abusing male for comedy. It was refreshing to see Arya's character cry more than once or twice in Sarpatta Parambarai for various reasons but mainly because his mom is upset...I was scared at least one of the other characters would say "don't cry...you're are man" but of one of them it...its such a subtle but effective portrayal of men's sensitivity

I just want to mention that in some movies I've noticed that women slapping their boyfriend or love without any reason doesn't appear as problematic as Kabir sing slapping...like in dil dharakne do vikrant messy's character was slapped by his opposite female character, priyanka chopra also hit Farhan, but no one raised any issue like kabir sing!
Jammy, I highly recommend you बागी बलिया from Satya Vyas. It is so beautifully written that you feel for the characters from the start. After Chaurasi on which GRAHAN webseries was based, this novel is perfect for adaptation. Do read that novel. It revolves around college politics. Satya Vyas is a genius.
The key too pursuit of equality is that we should uphold the same standards of consent, empathy and respect regardless of gender. And identify the role of power imbalances between people instead of sex/gender differences. I think these underlying issues get lost in the discourse.
The concept of Consent should be from both the partners. But in the movie Good news, during the time when Kareena Kapoor was trying to conceive, if the genders were reversed, I am sure that Akshay Kumar's character would have been called a molestor. I mean did you see his face in Airplane washroom. But that scene was laughed off.

Yesterday I had an argument with a guy on Instagram in the comment section of a meme page where a video of the lucknow girl was posted , and I commented she won't be even punished for all the things she did and the guy asked what did she do and what do you think should be done , so I very sincerely told him of the false accusation of physical assault she laid against the guy , and the physical assault she did to him and all the mental harassment she caused due to the public humiliation and the guy was like so what , its not like she is accusing him of rape , so it's not a case of false accusation, it's just a case of class discrimination and there is no big deal about the whole situation stop crying about it and writing paragraphs in comment sections derived of your emotional overthinking, to tell you I was stunned would be an understatement, like seriously wtf , I tried explaining him it doesn't always have to be rape and false accusation isn't always about sexual assault , accusing the guy of Eve teasing and physical assault when he didn't do anything was also a false accusation and we needed a law against such cases but all he talked about was rape like if its ain't rape I'm not listening to anything you saying, I'm questioning my sanity listening to his arguments 😑

Infact, the judge said that his freakin suicide note wasn't strong enough to punish her.

But turns out, it was for comedic purpose. What makes me more sad is that Varun and Alia are from relatively new generation. They should have denied to play a scene like that.

People don't realise that being a part of LGBTQ+ community is a concept of sexuality. It's not everything that shapes how you live. Every gay man isn't going to be walking in a manner that screams he is gay. Similarly, so many people don't even come to in terms of their sexual preference until a certain situation forces them to see it. So this bizarre idea of children being born and being weird is wrong. I hope people understand how problematic it is, as LGBTQ+ community is already so misunderstood and mistreated.

I believe we need to talk about these things when we actually want equality. Crimes against men are always taken in a light hearted way in Bollywood movies and it is truly disgusting because it inculcates the idea that everything is OK if it happens to a man. This is what creates toxic masculinity when even men shame other men if they have gone through harassment. Equality never means bringing the other gender down and women empowerment shouldn't be used as an excuse to cover up such things and blatantly misuse power.
Portrayal of gay men in movies has been so disorienting since ages. Dostana was also one of them. I remember watching it when I was a child and genuinely believing that this is how gay men act. Now as an ally of LGBTQIA+ I feel really terrible when I see such bad portrayals. They do deserve better.

Men and women processes emotions differently. A thing can be very intense for a woman but the same thing can be nothing for a man and vise versa. Just like lack of strength means physically weak , the same way lack of emotions means emotionally weak. But the problem is , instead of creating a safe space for a man to express his emotions , they( mainstream) are trying to impose a women's way handling emotions into a men which is against the evolutionary instincts and biology.

It's not just the movies though .Even during public appearances, male actors are expected to be okay with fans kissing and hugging them. I feel so suffocated for them sometimes.
You could easily make a part 2 of the video, because there is simply so much that is left unexplored. For instance, you haven't talked about the physical violence against men used for comedic purposes. I know slapstick is a thing in comedy, but the sheer amount of female characters slapping male characters overhwhelm the vice verca numbers. And not just that - even in drama films, "slapping the guy" remains a comedic trope.
I didn't think much about this until we had Kabir Singh and Thappad, which made me realize the blatant double standards. The male characters in those films slapping the female ones were considered such huge deals, but there was no shred of conversation about the opposite scenario.

For a very long time, not only Bollywood, but also Hollywood and many other film industries look down upon LGBTQ community, and used them purely as a comedic relief.
Men are shown as the strong beings who do not cry, do not show their emotions, and it takes monumental events to happen, to make then have a emotional breakdown. It affects the society in the most toxic way possible making men almost emotionless and scared of showing their emotions in fear of being called out on it.

I think the Vogue video was trying to say that men are often told to suppress their emotions since childhood which may make them violent. It is not always the case though obviously.

This is much needed. Harassment against men is always portrayed as meme content idk why. Being a long time follower of Youth Against Rape , we saw ridiculous comments on this fact from few public. Few months ago ,there was a teacher who raped her 13year old student and there were lots of people defending and making fun of the child saying that he got to "enjoy" sex in such a young age...That just disgusts me as a woman as well as a survivor..Again coming to the recent incident...idk how the police took her case when she's clearly guilty. Its very hard to have a gender equal society without breaking gender stereotypes . I had a friend in college who told us that he lost his virginity at the age of 9. We were shocked, he told us it was with his 15 year old baby sitter. Sadder is the fact that whenever such double standards are brought up or conversations regarding male victims are sparked it is labelled as misogynist. I have lots of discussions regarding the same with my friends and every time when I say how men are disregarded in society it suddenly becomes a victim olympics about how women have it worse despite the conversation not being remotely close to the women's sufferings. When there are activists trying to bring up such problems like Deepika Bhardwaj, they are lynched on the internet, their work is constantly disregarded. The entire mainstream education and media is busy teaching young boys to be apologetic for the things they never did and young girls to take revenge for the things they never faced and fight for the things they already have. No I am not saying women don't face any problems. But I want people to be able to discuss problems men face (which women are facing and receiving attention for) without being called sexist or misogynist or any of the plethora of names called to people who disagree with mainstream ideologies. Its extremely saddening.

It's actually necessary that more people speak out about the assault against men. The prime example being that of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The fact that she's still in Aquaman 2 and Johnny got kicked out of the POTC franchise and Fantastic beasts is just the reflection of how world treats the male victims when they come forward.

Assault is no joke, whatever the gender! Coming from a girl, women who assault boys and men make me sick. Never hit the opposite gender unless to defend yourself.
Also, Display of emotion is not weak. If you are with the right people you will realise you can breakdown anytime you want and they would still support you.

I love Pop Culture Detective. The Channel also had a brilliant two-part "Sexual Assault of men played for laughs" video. Whether it's India or abroad, society has very problematic perspectives when it comes to the sexual assault of men. The movie tropes about the assault on men are disturbing. We definitely do need to call it out more.

Honestly Anmol, you are very bold and an honest critic, which is why people like me I love watching your channel because you give different perspectives which many critics do not. I remember when the whole CarryMinati’s RUclips vs Tik-tok video came out and went viral, people automatically started to mock gay men and made lewd jokes about them for their appearance and sexual orientation, portraying them as perverted ‘panzie’ men. I remember when the film virgin Bhanupriya had come out in which the main protagonist’s friend says “Tumne kabhi kisi ladke ka rape suna hai?” That whole line pissed me off so bad. Had it been the opposite people would have immediately boycotted the platform itself. I’m so glad that films like Taish came out (Though it had various other problems in the storyline.) it really brought out the topic of male sexual assault and how men are so vulnerable and traumatised too. Though the film could have dug deeper into Rohan Kalra’s (played by Jim Sarbh) story. But one must appreciate the film for bringing out such a topic which is never talked about. Once again I’m very glad from the bottom of my heart that you brought this issue into the mainstream.
I would love to see a compilation of movies and scenes where these issues were dealt with in a mature and sensitive manner, without romanticising or belittling the struggles or the circumstances.

Back in 1995 when I was just a kid going to school, there was a married woman and her family who used to rent our neighbor's house. Her husband was rarely seen in the house. She used to frequent our house although my mom didn't like her much. She used to touch me inappropriately when nobody was around and it made me very uncomfortable and scary. It was really depressing. I was scared to tell this to my parents. So I shared it with my friends and they started teasing me ever since. One friend of mine told this to a senior class guy and he told me that I was lucky. I used to run away even seeing her at a distance. I was put in a boarding school the next academic year for getting low marks and that's how I escaped that toxicity and bullying at at school. Men/boys are told this is good/lucky which is BS. It's not that I am not attracted to women, but that incident made me understand the concept of consent at a very young age.
I can really relate with you here. I too was a victim of sexual abuse growing up. It's funny how adamant people are at double standards. Women go through awful, awful shit on a daily basis, nobody is denying that. But sometimes people fail to realise that men go through similar shit too. I hate the stigma that men should just bottle up their emotions and learn to take it like "men". That's the exact reason why suicide rates are so damn high among men.
Toxic masculinity is unfortunately prevalent in pretty much every society, in some way shape or form. While it's relatively subtle in other more developed countries, it's strikingly apparent in places like India and Pakistan. Males being the subject of domestic or sexual abuse is played for laughs. "Marrd ho Bhai, kyoun rohtay ho?" I used to harbinge a similar mentality growing up, but thankfully I grew out of it. I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone. You have value, you have worth and your problems matter. Don't let anyone try to invalidate that. Men can and do Cry.
I don't understand can't just film industries show equality. Like no need to show male domination abusing women or no need to dominating female abusing male for comedy.

It is commendable to see a channel which has such balanced views......You are the true epitome of tolerance and wisdom which lacks in our generation.....People try to prove others wrong while trying to prove a point.......You have set a new benchmark as a content creator as well as a human being,who doesn't shy away from accepting his own mistakes......It was really heartbreaking when so many channels just slammed an entire movement(feminism) on the basis of one or two incidents....But the way you have dealt with this topic is praiseworthy......It is important to formulate laws regarding rape of men, harassment,fake allegations and so on.....But at the same time reforms are also required for improvement in the condition of women........Most importantly,the society also needs to be more respectful towards humans in general.......We,as a society,have completely forgotten to respect each other's views and opinions and in are constantly trying to put each other down,to prove our point.....We need to realise that the other person's point of view is as important as ours

It was refreshing to see Arya's character cry more than once or twice in Sarpatta Parambarai for various reasons but mainly because his mom is upset...I was scared at least one of the other characters would say "don't cry...you're are man" but of one of them it...its such a subtle but effective portrayal of men's sensitivity

You missed the point with family man, Shrikant Tiwari did not cry on phone with Shuchi because he was in middle of an anti terrorist operation, and if his wife hears him crying she would go badshit crazy about what mishap makes him cry, do you remember that line "main jhooth isliye bolta hu taki tum log chain se so sako" it's more about keeping his family away from the shadows of troublesome atmosphere that he is in! I do not regard Srikant flawless or godly, he has flaws but not here, as far as that scene in family man is concerned.

I just want to mention that in some movies I've noticed that women slapping their boyfriend or love without any reason doesn't appear as problematic as Kabir sing slapping...like in dil dharakne do vikrant messy's character was slapped by his opposite female character, priyanka chopra also hit Farhan, but no one raised any issue like kabir sing!
Jammy, I highly recommend you बागी बलिया from Satya Vyas. It is so beautifully written that you feel for the characters from the start. After Chaurasi on which GRAHAN webseries was based, this novel is perfect for adaptation. Do read that novel. It revolves around college politics. Satya Vyas is a genius.

The key too pursuit of equality is that we should uphold the same standards of consent, empathy and respect regardless of gender. And identify the role of power imbalances between people instead of sex/gender differences. I think these underlying issues get lost in the discourse.

Yesterday I had an argument with a guy on Instagram in the comment section of a meme page where a video of the lucknow girl was posted , and I commented she won't be even punished for all the things she did and the guy asked what did she do and what do you think should be done , so I very sincerely told him of the false accusation of physical assault she laid against the guy , and the physical assault she did to him and all the mental harassment she caused due to the public humiliation and the guy was like so what , its not like she is accusing him of rape , so it's not a case of false accusation, it's just a case of class discrimination and there is no big deal about the whole situation stop crying about it and writing paragraphs in comment sections derived of your emotional overthinking, to tell you I was stunned would be an understatement, like seriously wtf , I tried explaining him it doesn't always have to be rape and false accusation isn't always about sexual assault , accusing the guy of Eve teasing and physical assault when he didn't do anything was also a false accusation and we needed a law against such cases but all he talked about was rape like if its ain't rape I'm not listening to anything you saying, I'm questioning my sanity listening to his arguments 😑

I remember seeing this ad from Channel V and it was a realisation moment for me to see how that man was conditioned from childhood to not cry and it resulting in him becoming torturingly immune to pain to an extent of being violent towards partner and that really struck me on how much patriarchal things have affected men and that is something no one ever speaks about. Also yes, whenever gay characters are shown in our Indian cinema, they usually have pink shirts worn or pink blushes or pink lipsticks as visual representation and are always behind another men.
