One of my favorite episodes because it was one the few times Screech was serious for a change. He talked about his passion for knowledge and science and it won over Kelly. Its all about confidence. The crazy thing is this can happen to anyone, you don't just have to be a jock to feel you can attract women you feel might be out of your league.
It’s true, I think there are many women who are attracted to brainy, nerdy guys who are not jocks. Screech’s obsession with Lisa prevented him from pursuing other women with whom he had more in common, and who would have treated him with respect.

The latter is true. But not to be that guy, but if you're considered a nerd I think most people won't give you that chance. This isn't to say that nerds can't get with girls out of their league, but most ppl judge by first appearance so I think you won't often get that chance to display that kind of confidence (Though Screech did display confidence by making moves on women like he did in the episode 'senior prom' even then it wasn't much.) Screech got really lucky with Kelly. Imagine if he approached Kelly the way Zack approached other girls (the senior prom). How would Kelly's reaction to Screech be? Actually I'll answer my question, Kelly is one of the few ppl that would give anyone a chance including screech (I don't think we saw an episode where Kelly actively disliked a guy and gave him that chance, Screech and Kelly naturally had alone time via tutor.). Point is you'll probably have to play a huge numbers game, esp if you're a nerd since most ppl don't give u that chance on first impression (and you still think this wouldn't happen today but it does, and I'm not including ppl who got together by chance encounters cuz they're hella different.)
Also I'm gonna put this out there. Confidence alone won't help. The episode at Senior Prom, Screech had enough confidence to go after other girls and he gets rejected right and left, whereas Zack every girl basically responded well to him (It's basically the you have to be a Chad in order to score which I got enough experience to know it's not always true.). But he got depressed right after that many rejections. Kelly's just the 1% of women that do like him for his confidence that could be out of his league. If not Kelly, majority of the girls like her would reject him right on the spot. He also needs abundance mindset, improve his appearance, and a process that allows him to approach women but move on simultaneously (tho he needs to develop at least reading body language and social cues in order to do this.) If he has a nerd reputation at school, then as long as that first impression is set most ppl aren't gonna give u that chance, even after your self-improvement. You gotta go to the malls and talk to strangers for someone like that to give him that chance (basically starting fresh.) so then you gotta consider your environment.
I love the fact that Kelly always treated Screech with respect (to my knowledge).
She did, she would often defend him when other people got down on him.

Ahh NO QUESTION !!!! the other five 😢would degrade him insult him insult his intelligence but Kelly ALWAYS respected as a person Plus they used him often Screech should've disowned them and found a new group of friends. Kelly fell for his personality which was a good start😂

This episode right shows what they could have done with Screech if they really wanted to instead of ruining his character like they did.
That’s true, there was a lot of missed potential. They should have developed his character more, made him mature into a more serious character similar to the way Steve Urkel did.
He just told to act like a goofball and thats what he did.
I have a feeling if they did that, he would’ve been more popular than Zack which is probably what the producers didn’t want. A similar reason why they probably didn’t continue the relationship between screech and violet. Zack and Kelly were the main couple and if screech and Violets relationship continued, the fear would’ve been that they would be more popular.
@@richie9308I think that’s probably true. They wanted to keep the focus on Zack, and didn’t want Screech to become a breakout character. It’s a shame, because Screech was actually a more likeable character than Zack. Screech and Violet’s relationship was iconic, as seen in the Glee Club episode. It was more interesting than Zack and Kelly’s relationship, but apparently they had already decided they wanted the show to be all about Zack and Kelly.
@@nancyhey1012 Especially now when you look back on the show, Screech was so entertaining, even more entertaining than Zack that it was almost like he was carrying the show. There were times when he did something funny, the rest of the cast would almost break character. There were a few scenes he did with Lisa where she almost broke character. He definitely had potential to being something bigger on the show and the final season of the show proved that which I felt was where his character had been somewhat developed. When he became valedictorian, he definitely proved people wrong about him but gave it up to Jesse who would truly be grateful for it. I also think he did it as a way to show her that he wasn't what people thought of him as.

It is no " secret" that Screech was a " genius" any more than it was a " secret" that Steve Urkel was a " genius". It's perfectly normal for geniuses to be socially awkward.

My favorite episode. Kelly could have anyone but she wants Screech bc he's really nice and very smart.
Another reason to go for him: He's not as selfish or as inconsiderate as Zack or Slater. It's confirmed that he is the least selfish among the main cast.

Indeed, I wish that they had dated for more than just one episode. But it was nice that they at least remained good friends after this. Kelly often defended Screech when other people would pick on him.

Saved by the bell could've made nerds cool before it was cool. A lot of kids would've been super stoked to see Screech get Kelly for being a good, smart, decent person, and it's not just about looks or popularity in high school. ZMIT.
That’s true, SBTB really never portrayed nerds as being cool. It took Family Matters with Steve Urkle to do that.
Even though Screech and Kelly didn’t become an item, I think she gained an appreciation for him as a friend after this episode. They always seemed to show a fondness for each other as friends.

I think it would of been better had they let Screech mature through the series. Go from obnoxious geek sidekick to an actual intelligent, sensitive, and thoughtful friend. It would of balanced out the pretty boy and jock dynamics of Zack and Slater.

Exactly. Like I said in another comment-it would have allowed the character to bring more to the table and get the rest of the group to realize there was more to Powers than what they gave him credit for.
@@MMZERO9Yes, that was the problem. The other characters usually just viewed him as a stereotypical nerd without appreciating his positive qualities. He was actually the smartest and most studious kid in the group, and also had the best ethic of loyalty to friends. Zack on the other hand really should have been held up as the example of what kids should NOT be like.

@@SXI96 he did go on a few dates in The College Years, but none that lasted beyond just one episode, so it wasn’t as good as it could have been. I think only in the New Class did he have any long-lasting relationships.

Yes, another missed opportunity. I feel like there must have been a lot of disagreements among scriptwriters as to whether to make Screech a serious and intelligent character or not.
@@nancyhey1012 They had the old mentality of having the golden boy being the center of all attention, its all about Zach. What will Zach do for a date, what will Zach do to get into the concert, to this, to day.
Meanwhile Slater, Screech and Lisa were better characters, and Jessie became a better character as well.
Family Matters understood from the moment they added Steve Urkel that golden boys in sitcoms are boring and that the crazy nerd facing social interactions is way more interesting, just like in real life. The Screech character was treated like garbage for yrs and he is still the most remembered thing of that show. Imagine if they had actually embraced him.
@@andresrojas7924 True, and the funny thing about that is Mark Paul is not even a natural blond, and as for the character of Zack, he was the least admirable or reliable of all of the characters on the show.
@@andresrojas7924 Screech is the most remembered character from the show, because I think contrary to what the show producers expected, more people related to having been an outcast or an underdog in their youth than having been the popular golden boy.

As I posted before I was in collage when SBTB was on so I was a bit out of it's audience age range but it was a guilty pleasure of mine. Was a big fan of Screech & always felt a little bad how the girls would reject him when he was so much kinder & nicer then Zack ( & sometimes Slater.) I use to (fond jokingly ) refer to SBTB as a hangover show. You could be nursing a major hangover & still get the storyline. R.I.P. Dustin just so sad you passed as you were trying to fix your past.
Yes, Zack was jealous, and tried to mess up Screech and Kelly’s relationship. Even though Kelly had not made any commitment to go steady with Zack at that time, so Zack really had no right to be jealous.

I feel like out of all the “nerd” characters in the early 90s shows, the only one who ever got any real character development was Billy Cranston from Power Rangers. And even with his development he didn’t steal the other characters’ thunder, rather he brought even more to the table. If the producers were afraid Sam “Screech” Powers would have overshadowed everyone if he had been given the right kind of development I say they were wrong.
Steve Urkle also got some good character development. If Screech had been given even that much opportunity for character development, he would have been better.
Jessie was smart too. Not sure why she didn't tutor Kelly.

I wouldn’t exactly say “stole”. She had not really make a commitment to Zack. Zack was attracted to her, but she just decided she liked Screech better. In the end, Zack admitted that she would be better off with Screech- they had more interests in common.
They really failed on making screech a tech billionaire in the reboot
The episodes where Screech had a love interest were always the best, and the ones where his character was developed as a serious person. Examples are the one where he dated Kelly, the Violet Bickerstaff episodes, and the college episode where he dated the tennis 🎾 player.
Screech and Kelly would've been really cute together. She genuinely fell for him too. I know Kelly and Zack were always endgame, but I really wish the show had explored some of these other pairings like Screech/Kelly. Zack & Lisa had really good chemistry too, that was a missed opportunity by the show because the audience wasn't ready.
Screech paired with Kelly and Zack with Lisa would definitely have made more sense than vice versa.

Yes, but Lisa was kind of selfish in the early episodes of the show, in my opinion. She didn’t even think about Screech’s feelings. All she cared about was the public image of her friend Kelly, a popular girl, and how she thought that popularity would diminish by dating someone outside of the popular crowd. I noticed that it was not until later in the season that Lisa became more mature, and showed more respect to Screech. Then she would occasionally give him a friendly kiss on the cheek, but not in the early episodes.

Lisa was simply not interested in Screech, and Screech should have got a clue long ago and stop pestering Lisa. Screech is not entitled to have Lisa.
That said, obviously it was played out for comedy; but in reality, life isn't fair and people have boundaries.

But Lisa did not need to put Kelly down just because Kelly was interested in Screech, like telling Kelly she should “get a life”, just because she liked to go to parties at Screech’s place. In fact, Lisa also later on had put-downs of Violet Bickerstaff when Violet was dating Screech.

I always wondered that myself. I did not understand his logic. He broke it off with Kelly because he said they did not have any common interests, yet he continued to pursue Lisa, it’s whom he had even fewer common interests, and who did not even show any attraction to him.

They never did get Screech's character right. They tried to mix a dork and a nerd into one character.
There were a lot of contradictions in his character. He was extremely intelligent on some matters, but also lacked common sense on others.
