This was the very first DVD box set I ever owned. Got it as a Christmas gift when I was 19... Still own it to this day. When I saw the awful Bluray set I said "Oh hell no. I'll stick with my DVDs" Amazing that a set this old holds up so well.
I am 42 and bought this when I was 20 working on an ugh factory before college later on life. One of my favorite sets.
Dude, this brings back memories! I still remember being the happiest guy in the world when I got this DVD box set as a Christmas gift back in '03, especially considering its high pricing at the time. As for that Blu-Ray set, I heard that the majority of its special features were imported from the DVD box set, so I saw no need in picking it up for my collection. FYI: even though this box set was incredibly expensive to own, it still beat the standalone discs, which, outside of trailers and commentaries for the first and last films, were all bare bones releases. Also, if I'm not mistaken, this set's edition of Freddy's Dead was the first ever 3D disc released in the history of DVD.
At least the series got the best horror documentary ive seen Never Sleep Again would be hard to beat
Thank you for going through everything I think you did a great job. I just got this same set at my local flea market and I did not know what the 3D glasses was for and you thankfully explained it.
Very nice job on the video. I believe i still have that DVD set and it's a good one.
Matt I rember seeing ads th third set in dnd catalogs tjt czme eith copies of Excalibur and th excorsist
the transfers on the bluray set are absolutely incredible and a huge upgrade from the dvd set. that alone makes the bluray set way better. however as far as packaging and presentation, the dvd set is the clear winner. if i had to pick one, i'd easily pick the bluray set. luckily i dont have to as i own both. also, brand new copies of this set have popped up at FYE's all over the country recently. which i just find odd as hell considering how old it is.
I agreed! last week I watched Nightmare 1 and it looks amazing on bluray
some of the best transfers out there, that nightmare bluray set.
Can't beat the old school dvd set! My preferred way to enjoy the series without question.
It’s not all amazing. Dream Warriors transfer bothers me. The Will killer wheelchair scene, the transfer is to damn dark on the bluray. When will zaps the chair and it explodes, the look on Freddy’s face is priceless. He has this shocked oh shit face. The Blu-ray on that close up his face is now all black. That moment is lost. All the other transfers for the other films is great. But 3 they went overboard. I’ve got both, but I can only watch Dream Warriors on my old DVD set.
@@RynMyers The Dream Master was way too dark as well.
I still have this box set. it's fun to see someone talk about it.
Orginal VHS covers on the casses of 1-6 love it!!!
Thanks. Nice comprehensive review of the set. I've been on the fence about getting the blu-ray set for a while...thinking it was the better option. You just helped me decide 👍🏼
People forget this came with a DVD point and click game. I liked it. I still HAVE that one.
I found this on Ebay for $100 sealed 👌 and original packaging 👌
Mine is still sealed too. Debating on opening it but it's worth will drop to 50. lol
When will Scream Factory get thier fingers out and get a decent Blu Ray collection on separate discs and cases?
Cool. I got this for my dad because he was a huge horror movie fan but I ended up enjoying it more myself! He ended up letting me keep it lol...
I got it for Christmas in 1999, it was a 130 bucks. I got that and a DVD player for Christmas and it was the best Christmas I remember as a child. I was 12 and spent all of Christmas Day going threw the nightmare encyclopedia. Still my favorite movie box set I’ve ever gotten.
Ps. My parents were really awesome!
Excellent review, very detailed. Thank you. Have you done a review of the films or ranking?
I literally agree with EVERYTHING you said about how much better the set is than the Blu-ray. I love the cover of the Blu-ray but it would’ve been awesome for each disc to have its own case at least
I used to have this exactly same set I found out by reading the book that it came out the day after I was born and I liked what it said about Freddy Krueger being up there to Darth Vader as in an iconic character
I currently own two of those. One to watch, and the other I have each dvd signed by cast members. I had Robert Englund sign the box.
Something that's become super rare nowadays is actually using the proper artwork for the films in home video. The DVD set has it, albeit with a huge black border.
I actually enjoy the cardboard flipper cases. They just seem sturdier and feel nicer in my hands.
It seemed like the studios were cutting costs using the cardboard flipper cases. They do feel pretty sturdy, but they wear out over time much quicker than the plastic cases.
You just have to be extra careful with the cardboard cases.
Awesome video, I too own this set.... I love it, flipper cases and all❤️💚❤️💚
Do the dvd & the blu ray's have the same run time? Are they uncut....I know the vhs versions are uncut. That's how I watch them now, especially part 5
Give it another four years, I’m sure Scream Factory will release a bluray box set for the 40th anniversary like they did with the Halloween franchise and are also doing with the Friday the 13th franchise in October!
One of the best box sets ever. My only gripe is I could do without the labyrinth feature. It made it very annoying to see all the features. I'm not good at puzzles lol.
Talking Freddy dolls scared children?! I got one from Toys R Us as a small child with the rubber fedora and the partially exposed brain, apparently in reference to part 2, which I hadn't seen then, and still haven't seen in its entirety.
Blu Ray set now comes in a box with 4 different cases housings the discs, not all in one case. Guess someone listened. I just got it from Amazon.
I gotta say, I don’t mind the flipper cases, I’ve got no problem with em at all.
this has to be the best nightmare box set i love my copy
Still waiting for that Scream Factory bluray box set
I like more blu ray than dvd actually, i collecting mainly blu rays, no dvds so much anymore.
I agree about the set. Seems like they just slapped the blu-ray set together.
The Blu Ray set looks really cheap ass to me. Not impressed at all.
Its funny before i saw this video i had intended to get the nightmare box set on DVD on the basis,
That it had a little more art work, its the 2011 nightmare collection.the cover sleeve looks the same
as the Blu ray, but i hope each movie has its own disc.
A buddy of mine gave me the BoxSet & it's way Cool!
I hope scream factory does a bluray box set soon
That is a sick shirt 🔥🔥
Hallo pizowell! Please copy the disk to your computer the nightmare series encyclopedia and please post it somewhere on Yandex disk or on the file exchanger very much Thank you in advance!
While I agree that the blu ray set is nowhere near as dressed up as the dvd set package wise the film transfers blow the dvd set away.
Every dvd release of the films had a horrible contrast boost to them while the blu ray retains the correct brightness level. A perfect scene to compare is when the camera pans up to a silouetted and freshly resurrected freddy in part 4.
As far as the special features in the nightmare encyclopedia they are all preserved on the blu ray set although not presented in the same fashion but all of the content is their either as part of a film's special features or on the bonus dvd
The dvd set is by far superior and my preferred way to enjoy this series.
@@chadmiller4601 it's only superior on presentation. The films look much better on blu ray.
My Top 3
A Nightmare on Elm Street
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Thats why DVD is better. + DVD screen is darker and more mysterios
I got the othere dvd box sets 4 films on 4 discs first set 1 to 4 next set 5 to Freddy VS Jason but I made my set have 1 more movie so it has the Adventures of Ford Fairlane.
I bought it when it first came out and it was 99.99 retail, back when it was first release
They should put the ‘Scream Queen’ doc on Part 2!
I still have this set.
I use to have this boxset got it for 20 bucks at best buy about ten years ago on clearance unfortunately it got stolen
Wow didn't know saving shelf space was an insult
Shaun Holthof UP THE IRONS!
+ pizowell
Really enjoyed your review, but aren't the bonus features transferred over to the Blu-Ray Set cause I seeing comments that pertain to it.
I myself own the Blu-Ray Set as I hadn't owned them before, I wanted to get into Classic Horror so this was an essential piece to that.
I've only seen the first 4 and I didn't mind the look of the films, as I wanted to enjoy the films for the first time, (this was 2014-ish) but your points are so on point that it's quite inferior to the DVD set, but for me personally I'd prefer slimmer package to save space as I use a cabinet for my movie collection and it looks good along with the Friday the 13th, Halloween, Chucky Box Sets, but that's just me.
Anyways Pizo great video very thorough analysis from a man who understands what the fans deserve, again great work cya next time.
Thanks, Dante. I heard that the bonus features from the DVD set were on the Blu-ray set, but it doesn't include the whole labyrinth set-up.
I downloaded the screen saver to my pc at the time and it would come on abruptly, playing the score with the bouncing. It startled me a few times when I left the volume turned up from earlier.
What a way to cover up the real truth with that the pull string doll scared kids.
I have the dvd set as well as the vhs set.I dont own the bluray set but the picture quality is better on the blurays. So I might get them any way just to have the better picture.I have the Tv series freddys Nightmares on burnt disks im gonna get a 3d bluray player an 3d tv so I can better watch the Freddys Dead ending in 3d.I think the other set includes the remake.
It feels good to tuch Fredy:D:D
I am getting it this Wednesday I know I will luv it
Blue Nightmare me, too
@ 7:14 The 4th one is The Dream Master not Dream Warriors
Very disappointed in the blu ray set myself. I actually found many of the video transfers to be sub-par, except for parts 1, 2 and 6. Many of the transfers suffered from black crush, boosted contrast and a slightly hazy soft appearance. Maybe they had issues with licensing, but the entire Freddys Nightmares series was severely absent from the set. Having individual blu rays for each film would have benefited, all with original artwork.
Yeah I agree the bluray is just not up to standard...I prefer the superior dvd collection set by far.
I llike fliper cases.
Almost 5 years later and... no proper blu-ray set :(
Rosskindragen It’s In A Nightmare On Elm Street Collection
Are you gonna show us that interactive little Freddy? lol
Haha! I actually considered installing it just to see if it still works, but I decided against it.
Blu ray in general has always been a disappointment when it comes to bonus features and packaging and menus.
Great video Piz, I hope you are doing great. I did a video on my channel about this very set. I got mine from a Walmart though. I really like the time and effort they put into this collection. They though of the fans. You going to see Robert Englund at Scarefest 10? I would but I am afraid he will charge 100.00 for signature. Keep up the great videos, I love them, your friend Steve & Andrew.
Thanks! Yeah, I'm planning on attending Scarefest and meeting Robert Englund. However, I'm fully expecting to pay upwards of 100 bucks for a picture with and an autograph.
those flipper cases are the worst cases ever made for DVD
i hate them with a passion lol
DVD is ok but blu ray is better it save you space
I agree 100% Plus Blu ray is far superior the dvd sets only better for boxart and special features, i own both sets but I've abandoned DVD because it sucks compared to HD anyways.
which movie is it 3d for ?
Freddys Dead
The DVD set is first class(looks like Scream Factory made it lol), the blu ray set looks generic as fuck and there was just no care put into the blu ray set whatsoever. You don't even get the 3D glasses in the blu set......rip off. The only reason to get the blu ray set is to have the films in HD but I've read mixed reviews about that as well. The blu ray set is just a quick cash grab by Warner.
I still have mine in good condition and I agree every bosett released now I'm recent years.. compared to this major newline cinema mega nightmare on elm street dvd boxsett released in 1999 certainly is a down fall from this good well done in super good quality fan content of a horror fanchise.. the ones now just like the studios or company choose to go the poor man quality to releasing a huge franchise on a smaller scale content they just throw in very short documentary with a notbwo much extra features due to i guess money and time I'm guessing they don't decorate the cases or covers like this dvd boxsett does nor have any care to include any extra rare vintage documentary footage of the making of these movies like that only care about just releasing the same basic standard full movies no extra content which is not fun for us fans that truly love these classic historical horror franchises that deserve more attention in talking time n pride to release these franchise s in a boxsett like this nightmare sett of 1999.. did.. they made it fun entertaining for the audience viewer fans to also explore knowledge behind the films for fun
Not even 5.1 surround sound, its just stereo sound
Dvd box set is very good and also is that, blu ray box set, blu ray box set is way better, i have both, so i can say straight!
I’m glad P2 has garnered attention, but it looks like garbage, and I can’t imagine the aesthetics of the picture will ever see praise...
All movies are way better on blu ray.
You like american horror story
I watched the first couple of seasons, but tuned out after that.
No, it's not, blu ray is way better dude.
Sucking of the teeth WAY too much
Cynthia Gibson go to Amazon its really cheap there less than 20.00 for the entire set. I bought mine today and will get it here soon. Piz helped me decide that this box set is better than the blu ray set.
baseball fan 72 ive had that same box set for ten years now i want that blu ray to see it in awesome hd
Cynthia Gibson same here I want most of all my dvds on blu ray here lately as well. Love the HD.
Okay so, can we please band together to get some kind of social media push for a good box set? I have tried doing this myself but I don't really have much time or followers to start this up. We need someone with enough pull to get this going. I was trying to get #justiceforelmstreetfans to catch on but I don't have enough followers or the time to get really get this going. Let's do this! We need to show Warner/New Line that Elm Street fans won't take no. Let's get this going on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, ext....
