My toxic d&d trait? Impatience. Not just with the flow of combat or the flow of the campaign, but sometimes I grow impatient with other players. Choosing spells, skills, actions, or have the spotlight shine on their character for story reasons. I don't hijack anyone's spotlight, or try to do anything spontaneous for the sake of "chaotic, random, lol." No, I simply sit seething over how long things are taking.

My "toxic" D&D trait is "it's what my character would do."
Not in a malicious way or anything, but there come times in sessions where I know my character would do something particular, and _I_ , as a player, don't want to do it, buuuut it _IS_ what my character would do, and it's usually something that could have bad consequences for me but not necessarily for others. I'm not going to deny the logical pursuit of roleplay because it might turn out badly for me, I'll deal with the consequences.

My toxic trait is definitely knowing the rules, and speaking up when others don't know them or they're being handled "incorrectly"... even if no one else cares. I find sticking to the established rules (not just RAW, it includes any house rules too!) makes things eaiser (since we can always just reference them again!) instead of coming up with a homebrew on the spot every time someone wants to say, make a jump, or grapple/shove a creature. It also helps me plan what I want my characters to do mechanically and come up with up varied builds that I find fun to play.

I am a bit of a defeatist. When the dice roll bad for me, they roll bad in a streak. Sometimes I just want to just say 'fuck it' and wait for the rest to resolve. I also get extremely annoyed when I keep getting interrupted every time I try to talk, to the point where I will just shut up and not give my input, even if it's something crucial. Because I can never get a word in edgewise.

    • @LaLaBrave
      @LaLaBrave Месяц назад +1

      Ditto
I left my last campaign for pretty much the same reason. Loud players would take over 90% of the session, so i rarely got to do anything, and if I did, the dice would just not work with me. Or if anyone did hear what I'd say, it wouldn't matter because majority rule say we do the stupid thing I don't want to do.

My toxic trait is that I honestly can't contain any secrets or foreshadowing for more than a few days, for example if I have a cool idea for a kaiju or character I will often tease it or subtly hint it, but after a bit my "subtle" hints go down to bunch of red arrows with sparkling lights pointing to the thing because I was just so dang excited to show it. Which than ruined the actual reveal

As a player, I can get too caught up in certain details depending on the situation, which leads to arguing with the DM at times. It has reached the point of annoying the others a little bit.

As a player, I often pressure players into making decisions. I have been in groups that took an entire 3 hour session to choose "go left or right". Pick something, anything, the game moves on. You win some and lose some, and a better story is told. Indecision kills campaigns

We play over Discord. I tend to be very active but I realize that there's other players at the table so I consciously hold back pretty often and IDK what it is but when I try and be quiet, let other players do things, but the group's socially awkward and I'll just let silence hang for a while before starting to do something because nobody else is. And unerringly, the moment I speak up I'm interrupting someone. Sometimes it's even the DM, who will pause for 10 seconds mid description. I can't win and I hate it.

Dm here. Anxiety and over sharing.
I’m always anxious my party isn’t having a good time so I have a tendency of trying to find ways to make sure without asking outright too much.
Also I’m not confined by writers block or burning out and have never really understood not wanting to just keep on world building, so I tend to over share and will lore dump until someone stops me.
So I created a discord where the players can drop their thoughts, ask for more of certain types of encounters or items and ask questions. I also created a separate channel on our discord where I drop all my extra lore and a link to the compendium I’m writing that they can read whenever they feel like, so I don’t drive my players mad with all the lore in my multiverse.

I got two that kinda just roll I to a singular toxic thing. I am a combination of a power gamer and chaos gremlin. I try to optimize what I do within what I do and find that it's usually not enough for numbers alone. The chaos gremlin part of me isnt typically harmful to the party, but I come up with ideas that are way out of left field that it takes someone a good minute or two to figure out what I'm doing if at all. Thus usually come out most when I have terrible ability rolls, I'm talking 10-13 across the stats. Baby times this leads to shenanigry , but most of the time people enjoy it because it's better than the usual "I do the thing, here's my roll"

I at times get so focused on playing my role or solving/out smarting the puzzle, i forget to play the game.
My solution to this has been Darl. He is the character im playing in my most recent dnd game. And he is just a regular guy. He isnt super pursuasive or smart. Its not his job to figure stuff out. He isnt some tragic hero who needs the spotlight. Hes just darl. His backstory is 1 sentence: "43 year old man in search of dad lore."
Playing the simple man character has been extremely relaxing and while at times i scream internally about trying to solve a dm puzzle, i remind myself, hey, thats not darl's job. Just go with it.

My toxic trait is making counter-toxic characters without telling the party beforehand, leading them to think I’m playing a “that guy” character at first.
Example: Brewtol Homicide. A reborn air genasi genie warlock, brought back to life by an eldritch genie who loves a good mystery. With a husky voice and dingy gray, smoky appearance, he swore to solve his own murder and crimes against others in the process (it was a detective/noire campaign). He was an edgelord, glooming in corners and intimidating suspects, constantly talking about his backstory of solving his own murder blah blah blah, telling the party “sorry, I work alone” (I had told the DM my character plan and he was down with it). DM and the party would just move on, not interested in begging this edgelord to come with them and when he saw this, he’d drop the act and come running with an excuse like “I get what you’re saying, working together might just work”, basically being a noire detective tsundere that really did want to be with others and was inadvertently kind to others through actions despite trying his best to sound like a bad cop

    • @Tototoron
      @Tototoron Месяц назад

Oh and all his attacks were smoke based using his smoke pipe genie vessel xD other characters were the Mary sue with imposter syndrome, stupid barbarian that knew he was unintelligent and frustrated by it, constantly trying to improve himself and be more sensitive to others, kender klepto that would typically reverse pickpocket others, seeing that taking peoples things made them upset but when they’d find something they didn’t know they had like an extra gold piece, it would brighten their day so despite thinking others protective nature over personal property was weird, simply adapted to be a kind person.

My toxic DM trait is that I'm kind of...a perfectionist. I do have OCD, so that is a major factor, but other than that, my campaign is my art, and like an artist, I want my art to be perfect, a masterpiece. So, I try too hard and put so much weight on my shoulders, and by the time I realize, plot elements are incoherent and messy. In the end, we as DMs just have to drill into our heads that the party is here to have fun, not to judge a particular piece.

I don't know if it's toxic per se, but I can't help but always optimize my character. I can't really help it, I don't know if it's ADHD or something but if I know there's a flaw in my character I can't help but try and "fix" it. I don't think that in itself is toxic, but I also can't help but point out when another player's turn isn't optimal either. I'm getting better at keeping my mouth shut but sometimes I can't help but say things like "you forgot to do X" or "if you did Y then you would actually do more damage this way". Thankfully my friends are pretty understanding and a lot of them tend to thank me for pointing out a character's strength, but even I know after saying it out loud that it's a bit annoying.

I am a fucking ray of sunshine and my toxic trait is that I am trying way too hard to keep things level, on track, and fun for everyone. Even when I am not even the DM, I try to lead by example and improve any situation that I can without being a backseat DM/main character man/ a Karen. I have spent waaay too much time obsessing over the pitfalls of playing TTRPGs, am painfully aware of anything I can be that might go wrong, and get PISSED (internally) when others miss that and muck things up (leeway for new players under six-ish months, of course, because they don't know what's going on) and when they don't show anywhere near my level of commitment. DOUBLY so if I sense it's because they can't be bothered or when it's on purpose.

On Discord games, I will mute the player or players who either want to argue about lore details in the middle of combats or who will hog all the DM's attention during roleplay segments to pull off a bunch of different acts of sabotage in a town all over the course of a couple of hours. After we've just arrived.
I also get really defeatist if the dice aren't going my way at all. Miss three consecutive atracks? My turn takes ten seconds while I have to listen to the other players do combat and do great? I stop caring at that point.

if you're late or if you cancel even a week in advance i am so dissapointed and annoyed, it sours my mood for a fair bit of time (a bout a week, like hours before next session after a missed game before i feel better)

I use social combat mechanics to the hilt. If I can avoid combat, with no regard to other players or the DM's story, I do. I can't help it. It's who I am. I've ruined several storylines in several systems (not so bad in D&D, but really bad in Vampire, Exalted, Cyberpunk RED, and Star Wars Saga Edition) and it really gives me a thrill to social my way through any and all situations. Needless to say, every character I make must have maxed out Charisma (or system equivalent).

  • @AeronHale

    I have two...
First one is that I know the abilities & stats of the vast majority of monsters because I study D&D lore obsessively for fun. Which means I'm pretty much always meta gaming at least a little even though I make an active effort not to.
I often end up having to be "surprised" in character by something that I very much knew was coming IRL in an effort to avoid doing it.
The second is debatable as a toxic trait but I absolutely will call out the DM if they make a particularly bad call or are abusing their authority as the DM.
I firmly believe it's as much the players job to keep the DM in line as it is for the DM to keep the players in line.
Unfortunately there are quite a lot of DMs or players which disagree with this philosophy so it can be a point of contention.

It's not as bad in D&D as it is in other games, especially since I know that failure in this game can be more fun than success if you roll with it for the sake of the story, but I get super competitive when gaming and take runs of bad luck personally.

I dont think many of the statements in the video are actually toxic. So here is some things that i do. I like to suggest things to the dm on how they could improve the game. I also really hate it when a party member is super indecisive or isnt taking it serious, i hate when the party decides to do something incredibly stupid, which i will ask them why the hell did they do that. And i will occasionally fudge rolls if i think the outcome will be alot more fun or open up better rp opportunities.

I hate when players just declare a skill check they want to make and (usually) they just start rolling. No, tell me what you want to do, and even if i would've agreed with the roll you wanted to make, I will then tell you what to roll. Example:
Bad Player: Perception check! *rolls* 16! What do I see?
Good Player: I'd like to walk around and take in my surroundings. Do I notice anything unusual or out of place?

As a DM I can not make a balanced encounter for the life of me. It's usually always a steam roll in the parties favor. And I get way too into RPing I often forget to add in combat encounters for my players. Also I have a tendency to focus a bit to much on a couple characters at times.
As a player I have to fight the urge to chime in on rules and backseat DM. I am also always paranoid about taking up too much of the spotlight.

Okay, that bard one isn’t really toxic to me. Every character has a gimmick. For a bard to not have any buff spells or healing spells is actually surprising. My dnd ( pathfinder) toxic trait if you could call it toxic is probably my knowledge of combos whether that be card games or ttrpgs. When I see someone using a class that is kinda veering towards a possible combo, I’ll inform them of a class they should dip into / items or feats they can take to really maximize effectiveness. I like making a build really good

I know too much about how my other players' characters function. To the point where I could play their characters better than them.
This ties into the other problem I have: I want combat to be fast. I typically reduce the number of choices I have to make in combat down to a point where I can usually complete my turn in 3 minutes; others, meanwhile, can take thrice as long to perform two attacks, just like I did.
This ultimately boils down to people not knowing the ins and outs of their character, but like. C'mon. We're Lv. 11, and there's been little deviation to your round-to-round since what you've been doing since 5th level.
"Do you optimize?" I optimize in an unorthodox manner, cause I like exploring the rules. My current character (DnD5e) is a Dex-based Str-dump heavy armor user. That sounds dumb, until you realize that Ring Mail has no Str requirement, and that you can use a Natural Armor if it would grant better AC than your worn armor, all while still retaining the benefits of your armor.

Toxic DnD trait. Hmm i dont have one. the closest i ever got to toxic was when my character had a traumatic experience i decided was gonna scar him from then on. The incident was simple. Basic dungeon crawling At level 2 with the whole party present. We came to what was clearly a boss room i had my character which was a ranger run straight to its centor which immediately triggered the boss fight kinda my intention but i clearly didnt think that plan through. it was A large spider and can’t remember how many small spiders. the party got stuck at the entrance fightting all the small spiders while I was up in the bosses face. of course it was my first session so i wasnt fully aware of my role as a ranger i spent my first turn trying to attack barely did anything it then almost downed me. my turn again i cast a binding spelling (can’t remember the name ) and then run to the party. the boss used its turn to immediately brake out of its bindings Im then downed by all the tiny spiders party heals me but oh wait no one else has actually attacked or angered the boss yet it rushed me and downed me again. we did ultimately kill the boss and did so pretty quickly after the rest of the party began to engage it but i made the decision that after such an experience my character would be so traumatized by spiders that it would attack them on sight if ever possible regardless of priar knowledge I did announce this to the the other players and DM however as luck would have it dispite the campaign lasting for a few more sessions that would be my last time ever playing him which sucked to cause he was supposed to get a wolf companion in higher levels siad wolf was a huge part of his background and everything but

I tend to take the lead when someone comes up with a bad idea (like, everyone in the group sees how awful the idea is except for the idea maker, such as wanting to use fireball to make a campfire for some runaway kids we find in the woods).
I also push my opinion when the group is stagnating, I want there to be consensus and I hate railroading fellow players, but past experience tells me no one agrees how to proceed and we’ve been sitting here for half an hour, we need to move on.
