  • Audacy filed to sell WTSS, along with WLFP in Memphis, Tennessee, to the Educational Media Foundation for $15.5 million in April 2023.
WMSX-FM 96.1, a Townsquare Media-owned station, has rebranded itself as "The New Star 96.1" in order to fill the Adult Contemporary gap in Buffalo.
WTSS-FM is grandfathered as a superpower station, with a 110,000 watt Effective Radiated Power (ERP). WMSX-FM has a 47,000 watt Effective Radiated Power (ERP).

If you have a device capable of tuning HD Radio stations, Star 102.5 is still being broadcast on WLKK-HD2. I’ll be discussing this in a future video.

I always relied on Star for Christmas music. Im one of the few who loves the Nov 1st flip. I have no signal to 96.1 in the car, but 102.5 FM was strong all around the Greater Toronto Area.
Im depressed asf and have no idea what Im gonna do in the car during the first 2-3 weeks of November, the Canadian stations wait til mid-late November to flip to all Christmas music.

Star 102.5 in the day ( 70s/ 80s) known as WBEN FM ROCK 102
    Fully automated
Southwestern Ontario picked it up and DJS like Roger Christian rocked the airwaves of Rock 102
    A great station.
End of an era for 102.5

Actually earlier today at around 7AM they brought the Star 102.5 music back on the audacy app and commercial free. They also announce on the stream that they are on WLKK HD2. I haven't seen any official announcements about it being online. Who knows how long they will have it on though, so enjoy it while it lasts!

Maybe this is a temporary thing... I mean Star is also at 96.1 although it's owned by Townsquare. So now we went from having just one Star to having TWO Stars. Unfortunately for Toronto, they get no Stars since neither station sounds good up there and Audacy is blacked out unless you use a VPN to connect to a US server.

Back in 1972, I would not have envisioned "radio consolidation." The only good local stations are on A.M. now.

Wait... corporate radio station owners are doing things based on the almighty dollar instead of serving the local listeners' interests? That just isn't done!

I miss MAGIC 102. It was better than WKSE.
The owners of WKSE bought it out and changed the format to Q102 (and later Star 102)
They even bought 107.7 to block top 40 from competing with them.
    ALSO
They did the same on the AM side.
They did not like having competition at all, so they also bought WGR News radio 55 and moved sports there so that nothing competes with WBEN.
WGR was the best news source for Buffalo...when News broke out...THEY broke in!!
WBEN could not compete so they bought it and shut it down. WBEN SUX!! I am so glad I am not living in Buffalo NY.
I LOVE my 680 news (Toronto) and various radio listening choices that compete freely with each other.
The good people of Buffalo are nice people, but their radio listening choices SUCK, and it's not their fault...it's all this damn freedom to own everything
Unlike Canadian radio where the restriction is 4 stations in a market not every damn station! (USA radio = 60% of a market, max, actually)

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone tonne honest who has seen the total decline of traditional radio stations
This won’t be the last one
Radio stations world wide are struggling in a society of Sirius xm / streaming and cell phone music. It’s had it’s day but this will continue in other regions and likely worldwide
    Sad yes
    But it’s not a surprise

The same thing happened to WRNR-FM in Annopolis, MD. They were a great locally owned and programmed station that was active in their community and played alternative music. They didn’t do well during COVID (even resorting to a Go Fund Me so they could pay the staff, which I donated a little too) and recently had to sell to a Christian broadcaster so they could duplicate programming from their Baltimore station. It was like a kick in the gut when they flipped. At least that’s semi local unlike your situation, which mirrored K-Love buying Mix 107.3 in DC and WPLJ in NYC from Cumulus in 2019. I tuned around the FM dial and there were over a dozen Christian stations in Northern Maryland.

Do the Christen stations have some kind of financial advantage the commercial stations don't? Is it because the Government doesn't tax them? Or is that only for church physical property, i.e real-estate? Or they just get all kinds of money from listener donations? I don't understand how that would support so many christian stations in one market, let alone nation wide? You see the same thing over the air with low power TV religious stations, tons of them, often repeating the same programming from one station to the next at the exact same time. How does that work?

Hey, what website are you using for the 'coverage maps'? Curious for a URL. BTW, I listened to WTSS and WMJQ for years up in Toronto. Sad to see it go.

I used rabbitears.info. To get a coverage map of an FM station, use this link: www.rabbitears.info/fmq.php?request=list&facid= and add the FM station's facility ID after the last = sign. So for example, WBKV 102.5 is facility ID 34382, so the link would be www.rabbitears.info/fmq.php?request=list&facid=34382

But now, the 102.5 signal into Toronto that did not commercially matter with the now previous owners now does matter with the new programming's universal subject matter., IMHO.

Does the white bar on your Sangean radio display indicate the minimum signal strength required for a radio station broadcasting using HD Radio to be able to achieve a lock on the digital HD radio signal? If so, I saw a radio review by Techmoan for an IP radio that can also receive DAB/DAB+/FM radio, and I believe its signal meter has a very similar segmentation where if the meter bar goes below the displayed threshold, the signal becomes too weak to achieve a lock on the DAB/DAB+ signal.

    • @WNYOverTheAir
      @WNYOverTheAir  Год назад +1

Yes. That white bar indicates the minimum signal quality/SNR needed to achieve a digital lock on a particular HD channel. Keep in mind, it only represents this when the Sangean radio flashes the HD symbol at the top, or if it’s locked onto an HD channel.

    • @scratchpad7954
      @scratchpad7954 Год назад

@WNYOverTheAir So, in a way, it works very much like the signal meter would have on a modern TV just before the switch to digital or in the immediate aftermath (back when there were still analog TV stations on the air), only displaying when tuned to a TV station's digital channels?

Looks like EMF is trying to take over the transmitter by remote control as “quietly” as possible to keep any protest of the new format to a minimum. A similar situation happened where EMF took over 100.3 The Sound (Classic Rock) in LA. The Sound broadcast their finale show (Uncle Joe Benson Morning Show) as a final shindig of their Classic Rock Format and sounded like a Party. Once EMF took over, that new format was badmouthed all over Social Media and the new Owners were furious because they were dependent on donations as a non commercial station.

Probably not going to happen any times soon.. EMF is the largest Christian music radio network. No clue how they get their money other than maybe donations? But it seems they just keep buying up FM's, currently have at least 600 stations with K-Love and over 1000 stations (low and high power) divided among EMF's various music formats in including K-Love, Air1 etc.
