The making of a medieval kirtle

- In July 2018, it was finally time for me to sew the medieval kirtle I had been dreaming of for years. The problem was, I had less than four weeks to make it and at the same time, I wanted to do everything right. Four weeks of panic sewing resulted in a nice dress in the end, and now, some months later, I am still really proud of it, but It was not at all as easy as I thought it would be...
The result was a tight green kirtle, suited for late 14th - late 15th century. This year, It will work as a under kirtle for my mid 15th century costume.

I appreciate you showing how to pattern it on yourself... because not only does my family think my historical sewing is SUPER weird (and thus won't help me), I am way too cheap for a dressform!

i keep forgetting that the dresses that look unflattering in medieval paintings are tight fitted, which translates to them having the shape of well, a female body, which will always be an attractive look
I am SO IMPRESSED that you sewed this by hand! Its beautiful! I desperately want to make one, but haven't broken into medieval reenacting yet, so have no where to wear one yet

You can always try looking up your local Society for Creative Anachronisms group (www.sca.org). The group covers anything pre 17th century but the main focus is on the Middle Ages.
You could always wear it at home. Not only would you get a proper feel for what it's like as everyday wear, but it would already have that well-worn, lived-in appearance when it debuts at your first reenactment.
I'm in the same boat! Maybe we should make our own :P
Im strange because i plan this stuff to be what i wear daily as im becoming off grid and also reanactments

I'm glad to see young people into historical clothing. I thought it was going to be a lost art when my (old lady) generation passed on. Since things are opening up after Covid we're going to be having more reenacting events so I'm going to make a new pattern for this dress because I'm totally inspired by this video. I have a lovely dark green wool that will be perfect for the dress and almost 3 meters so it should work.
I just found your channel I absolutely love the way you make your video's with the music and the comments on screen. I have some trouble being able to read It because of my eyesight that's the only thing I wish was different. But even without being able to read what's on screen very well I just subscribed your channel is wonderful and wherever you film it's Breathtaking.But

What I love about this type of kirtle is that it in itself is a supportive garment. They even support larger busts comfortably.

Lola Montez I’m a 44G. I’ve had had better luck with them and bodices then modern bras. It’s all about grain lines, cut and fabric.

Wondering if we may be distantly related. I had a DNA match with a John Abrahamson in his 60’s. My grandfather came to America from Sweden. His name was Carl Gustav Dahlin.
Its gorgeous. This kirtle could be worn in any age, I remember making a dress very like this in the 70s to mid calf length. Do you get a chance to wear it. I love the colour too

Just gorgeous. How do you get the bodice shaping without darts and such? Surely it is not stretch knit fabric....
Wool is an amazing fabric! The tight fitting comes through shaping of the side seam and at the front were the lacingholes are. This means that darts isn't neccerary. However, this means that it's important to get the pattern just right. I know that Morgan Donner for example has done a video about this!

Damn, you live in an absolutely beautiful place to sew outside (when the weather permits ofc)! That's one of the things I love the most about sewing by hand - I'm not tied to one place.
It might also be my sewing machine, but I've found that my hand stitches are just better quality than the machine stitches. The clothing doesn't tend to fall apart, you know?
Where did you find your fabric? I'm looking in the US and it's really expensive.

I’m absolutely in love with your beautiful kirtle. I have been trying so hard to find the perfect kirtle pattern and I am absolutely stunned by your video! Do you have any specific or general medieval pattern that you based your kirtle pattern off of, if so what style?
The basic idea is based on those contemorary finds we see. Examples from Sweden is the bocksten mans kirtle, "Söderköpingskjorteln" och queen Margaretas kirtle among much else. It's a simple construction that seems to have been the go to cut during almost thousand years.

all that hand sewing !! oh my goodness ! Its beautiful and so are you in that dress ! So jealous of your gorgeous surroundings as well! PSA a lucet makes for easy sturdy cord and takes less time to produce said cord ! I can make 3 yards of cord in 15 min . do you have one on your smock/shift that goes underneath ? I'm making one but the neck is a bit to wide and was wondering if anyone could tell me if I can use pintucking or fancy top stitching details to close the gap a bit . undergarments are hard to find details on for me ..
Aw thank you!💕 I used a normal braid just because it was the fastest solution and also because they were founded among the london findings. But thank you for the tip! I can't give you a good solution on the shift-matter though, I know smocking became popular in the late 15th century on shifts, but I don't now of any other embellishments than that. Good luck with it! I'm sure it will turn out beautifully😊

Hi! i have this project garment where my topic is early middle ages. i have to make one garment about my topic. so i choose your kirtle for my project garment. it's easy to understand by looking at how you made it. but, i have one question. in video at 4:37 , what is your meaning by stripes of linen where cutted out? and where did you sew it? may i know? ^_^
I cut out linen stripes to make the edges where the eyelets is stronger. So before i sewed the eyelets I sewed the stripes on wich where around 3cm wide. Good luck with your project!😊

Beautiful!! It looks perfect! I have been made several mock-ups for the bodice myself, but just can’t get the fit right. I am quite a bit curvier than you and dealing with an F-cup. It just keeps gaping at the top or squishing my breasts in two or other variations of unflattering puckering. A few darts would be so helpful! But your video inspired me to give it another go!
I can't give you a good solution since I'm not dealing with the same problem as you. I would however look at some bust supporting shifts. There are a few paintings that shows that some kind of shift with support did exist during the 14th and 15th century. Thats my tip, and also to never give up on your mockups! The kirtle will turn out beautiful. I'm sure!😊
