Each track of the two has a different composer: Cool Edge Day: Tomoya Ohtani Cool Edge Night: Fumie Kumatani (she's not at SEGA anymore, but in her time she made some of the most incredible, memorable tracks for Sonic/SEGA)
I absolutely love her songs, her jazz songs were just brilliant, and one of my personal favorites by her was, funnily enough, Shadow's White Jungle stage music
Little known fact but Fumie Kumatani quit SEGA after marrying Kenichi Tokoi, presumably returning to a more private life raising their kids and all that. Tokoi is also a SEGA Sound Team member that has done a ton of music for Sonic, most notably in Sonic Colors (Planet Wisp, Terminal Velocity, etc) and he did always sorta share some of her stylistic traits when it comes to his music so it's a neat little thing that ended up happening.
The night themes in this game are something else. The only issue is there's a battle theme for when enemies show up and while it's good it's SO loud and obtrusive it has a very negative connotation in the fandom
if SEGA ever re-releases this game they need to give us an option to toggle the battle music off. I don't mind if it plays for the miniboss sections where you're locked in and have to fight enemies though.
@@VelvetAuraA more elegant solution would be that the song only was played at events where enemies block your path, and the rest of enemies encounters just kept playing the stage theme. I really like the battle song but having it start and stop every 15 seconds is what's makes it annoying

Thanks so much for checking out Cool Edge, Jesse! I absolutely love the contrast between the day and night themes in this game. I haven't heard many snowy themes that sound like Cool Edge Night, but whenever I hear the song I can see myself standing out in the snowy arctic, with this sense of mysticism and beauty but also extreme danger. It might sound a little cheesy, but typing that out just made my hairs stand up on end, lol.
Honestly the best part about Sonic music is how well each OST distinguishes themselves from the others. I hadn't even heard Cool Edge Day until about a month ago at most and yet somehow I just knew it was from Unleashed. The power of strong composing!
I don't know if you knew this, but all the locations in this game are based of real world locations. Cool Edge is based of Alaska and Rooftop Run is based of Europe (mainly Italy)
Yes! I've been waiting for this one! Cool Edge is such a great representation of the Unleashed OST and how diverse it is, even between day and night themes. To address the point of it feeling not quite "wintery" or "snowy," I think some important context is how this stage looks visually. It's not like the classic snow level with pine trees, overcast clouds, and light snow. (The day stage) Is more of a bright and sunny stage, filled with flat glaciers that are surrounded by the ocean, while transparent icy structures reflect the sunshine. Musically, I think the sustained guitar and synth notes mimic this vibe of "reflective ice in the sunshine" quite nicely, as opposed to the excessive use of sleigh bells commonly associated with classic snow stages that are blanketed with white snow. I can't wait for you to hopefully hear more from this OST. It's one of my personal faves. And you haven't even heard some of the more "cultural" tracks yet! Another HUGE aspect of this OST is the celebration of different cultures and sounds around the world. Each stage is set in a different continent/country inspired by real world countries. For instance, Rooftop Run takes place in the equivalent of Spain/Italy, which is why the night theme heavily features accordion. The different styles and instrumentation reflect the locations well. There's stages inspired by New York City (musically giving a big band/jazz vibe), Africa (tribal percussion and woodwind heavy vibe) and more!
Tomoya Ohtani is the GOAT. I love his Sonic music. Additional Note: Most of the themes represent the area Sonic is in. Sonic Unleased is called Sonic World Adventure in Japan. So you have Sonic and co. run around different regions based on irl places and the music reflects it. Rooftop Run that you have reacted before is essentially the "theme" of Europe (Spain, France, etc) while Cool Edge here represents the icy regions/countries irl.
Unironically my favorite sonic game. The real world locations, the aesthetic, the story, the gameplay. It just nailed every checkbox for me. Something fun about the day time song is I swear it’s partly a remix of a song in Ristar for Genesis. And this game introduces the werehog which platforms by grabbing things with his stretchy arms, which is also what Ristar did. But cool edge night just invades my ears. Absolutely love the dark somber music themes of the werehog levels. Some are upbeat but others sound almost sad.
It wouldn't be the first time an old Sega game's music gets a little motif revival. The most unexpected one for me is one of the Phantasy Star III's ending themes being a key part of Skies of Arcadia's final boss.

Unleashed has one of my favorite OSTS in gaming. It’s so good and such a diverse soundtrack. Also making a dark ice theme,How? It’s beautiful and I haven’t seen it much before.
In a meta, out of story way, the reason that the night levels (also known as Werehog sections) exist is most likely because since Sonic Unleashed was the first game to use what the fans refer to as "the boost formula", Sega was afraid of all the time and effort they put into making the assets and designs for maps going to waste as the players just zoom past them in the blink of an eye (especially with how gorgeous the game looks) and also didn't want the game to be finished really quickly. So creating a slower-paced half of the game experience where players take their times in what is essentially a God of War clone not only fixed both of those issues and added a hook for the story, but also tapped into the growing market of GOW clones at the time.

Cool edge day sounds very 2000s sonic to almost a boring degree imo, but when I was a kid at the start of every game session I would replay the levels with this song because the beat would put me into the sonic the hedgehog gaming flow state
I love when games have vastly different soundtracks for different times of the day. Lightning Returns is another one that does that, it really helps sell the fact that a city during the day is a different experience from a city at night, for example.
Yoooo i was just thinking i would u to react to this stage for both day and night. Listening to both side by side give u a better idra of how thr music changes form day and night stages, its such a cool thing to hear
Im an old man at 27 here and i am starting to feel this highlights the absolute difference in quality a lot of the rock music has in sonic from the more experimental stuff that for instance kawatami was always doing. Jun senoue was their number one rock song writer and crush 40 and all the other featured artists in the adventure games did the best job as well, but even he started to feel routine after a while especially when he came back for the black knight. And nobody else could write a driving rock level theme like he could. All the day level themes pale in comparison in this to the night themes which were way more experimental and reliant on real exciting melodies written for instrument sections that didnt take the lead in rock music. Also good i guess that japan is sexist and decided to never burden and overwork Kawatami with writing so that her compositions continue to stand out among the rest. And theres always all the shadow themes with everett bradley, all the rouge themes, and the chao themes in sa2 which again, as an old man, are just so much cooler than the rest of the soundtrack today. :)
By the way, every country (aka Town) has both a day and night song, as you know; Buut there's also diferent tracks for when you're in a stage or just walking around in the country! So there's 2 night and 2 day songs for every country! (There's like 7 or 8 I think) btw btw no, the stage themes don't change mid-stage, you either start a day or a night stage, there's only one (which is the last one) where it does change when you transform back and forth from Hedgehog to Werehog althought it always starts from the start BTW BTW BTW, the town music for Cool Edge (the town itself is called Holoska, all towns have a different stage name) is very much more christmas-sy
Sonic Unleashed Is probably one of my favorite games for music. So much diversity. It all fucking jams. It gives me goosebumps. In the game you go all across the world, in different fictional continents based on the ones we actually have. So the music is inspired from all those different cultures, but it's still fast paced, still sonic.
Glad to see you liked it, I always get so hype seeing you upload a Sonic reaction My personal favourite level theme from the whole Sonic franchise is Jungle Joyride Night, As a whole the night themes are super underrated
Tomoya Ohtani is a genius. I just went to Sonic Symphony live last night and he was there - by complete surprise. I screamed so loudly when he showed up that I probably blew everyone's eardrums out around me.
To be fair , Sonic has been very eclectic as far as music goes due to many different composers representing different eras that was popular at the time. Early 90s focused more on Hip Hop House, New Jack Swing, late 90s focused more on Techo and Europop, Early 2000s leaned more into Metal and DnB and today they're doing pretty much everything So I don't think Sonic really has a distinct sound because it all depends on the artist interpretation of Sonic.
1997-2008 is basically Sonic's Jazz/Funk Rock era. And my favorite. Which has nothing to do with all my favorite Sonic games also being from this era as well, I swear. The music can get pretty cheesy at times but Sonic probably taught me to appreciate jazz and funk sounds (I was already a lover of rock and metal).
When you did that one snow song from team sonic racing, part of that song was a remix of cool edge day (you even said these were both a little Christmas-y)
Cool edge day and night are 1 of my favorite snow/ ice themes my favorite being Magical Snow Day from Sonic Runners a mobile game with an amazing OST also Sonic unleashed is one of my favorite Sonic games.
Sonic Unleashed was the first Sonic game that introduced the 'boost formula' where you build a boost meter with rings that you use to reach insane speeds, these are the day stages. The night stages he turns into a 'werehog' and you have slower combat and platforming gameplay akin to God of War. Also please for the love of god look up the opening cinematic to this game, it is one of the best opening cutscenes in gaming period. (or react to it if you are okay with watching videos)
100% watch the intro cutscene for this game its amazing. was just thinking the other day "i hope he does cool edge night" sonic unleashed night themes are so good. this game actually had 2 versions, one for ps3/360 and one for ps2/wii. ps2/wii versions were shorter and technically missing a lot of content but were fun all the same, downside is these games were too powerful for their consoles and some levels lagged hard.
It’s a shame werehog was so hated i thought it was fun and for it’s time it exceeded many expectations. There’s different versions of the game and was probably one of the most famous games and one of the last games that was on like 4+platforms. Ps2 and wii was standard version. PS3,Xbox was the HD versions. Graphics and some levels were changed but somethings in the SD version was better despite being called the inferior version. People hated the werehog gameplay but it was fun and it was made in a time when beat ‘em ups were very popular.
Werehog was well designed for what it was. It got hated the way it did because the main criticism was “why I go slow in Sonic Game?” Which the irony is the more you unlock with the Werehog & better you get with the move set, the faster you can get through the levels. Werehog was great but was subject to the Sonic hate bandwagon at the time.
I think the big problem with the Werehog was that the combat got really old really quick, there wasn't that much variety despite the game having a level up system and halfway through the game you were most likely just doing the same 4-hit combo on everyone because it was the fastest and best way to beat enemies. The platforming I think was really fun but you'd spend 80% of a stage during battles so that's where most of the complaints came from, barring the medal collecting.
Sonic Unleashed is interesting in that a the time of release it got mostly polarizing reviews exactly because of the werehog. People really liked the day stages but not so much the night ones because of the slower pace and more emphasis on combat. In Recent years tho people have gone back and looked at Unleashed with a new glance and it's now one of the most liked Sonic games.
Unleashed's soundtrack is like top 5 of all time from Sonic. You honestly might be better off just binging entire OSTs at once from gaming giants like Sonic, Mario, Mega Man, Kirby, etc. because you are missing OUT. Like, I wanna say 80 or 90% of Unleashed's soundtrack all goes as hard as the two stages you've listened to. Even the hub world themes are great in their own way.
Sonic unleashed is one of my favorite games Of all time you should listen to the night boss theme it’s really cool boss music that no one ever talks about
Sonic Unleashed was the first big Sonic game to come out after the disaster that was Sonic '06 (let's gloss over the Wii exclusive Black Knight for argument's sake). And while, yes, people had issues with the night stages, the daytime stages were pretty much unanimously agreed to be a fantastic return to form and gave the series a fresh new feeling of potential for the future (and was followed by banger after banger with Colours, Generations, Racing Transformed)...right up until it all fell apart again with Sonic Boom. With the mostly positive reception to Frontiers, we're in a similar position now back to where we were after Unleashed : a step in the right direction, hopeful for what's to come in the future!
Hopefully one of the Bravely Defaults make it for the winter theme, both having different vibes (1 having a melancholic feeling as this land has suffered many calamities, from the plague and corrupt organisations with a lot of influence, and 2 being more churchlike, boasting separate issues, but also sharing a common theme with one of the protagonists! Very short summary trying to avoid spoilers) And they both are composed by Revo, and both sound outstanding!
Admittedly, I avoided listening to the night themes from this game, as I preferred listening to the day ones. I can definitely understand why people like the night themes more, but I think I still prefer listening to the day ones. Cool Edge Day is one in particular I like to listen to a lot, but I think most of them are pretty good. The other one I listen to a lot is Dragon Road Day, which is the sonic stage based on china. This isn't a particularly strong request, but is more my own personal preference with this game, but I would recommend checking out Perfect Dark Gaia (sometimes referred to as Dark Gaia Phase 2) and its companion song, Endless Possibility (Credits theme). They're my favorites in the series as a whole, though I know my music tastes don't really align well with others, especially in the sonic fandom. (Frontiers did not appeal to me much while many people call it the best of the series) But I'm glad you checked out Cool Edge Day, that's pretty much good enough for me
Sonic unleashed released in 2008, it was the game right after sonic 06, which you've done plenty of reactions too. And for both games you are just scratching the surface Unleashed, 06, and adventure 2 are the best soundtracks in the franchise
You should start looking up videos with some gameplay in the background in my opinion. Actually watching the setting and set pieces enhances the music immensely most times.
If the whole game was just Werehog, I would've preferred it but I still think the wii version is far better including level design where there I do prefer the day stages.

(There's like 7 or 8 I think)
btw btw no, the stage themes don't change mid-stage, you either start a day or a night stage, there's only one (which is the last one) where it does change when you transform back and forth from Hedgehog to Werehog althought it always starts from the start
BTW BTW BTW, the town music for Cool Edge (the town itself is called Holoska, all towns have a different stage name) is very much more christmas-sy
Yess the town themes. Shamar (Night) lives in my mind rent free. God that song slaps for no reason
Glad to see you liked it, I always get so hype seeing you upload a Sonic reaction
My personal favourite level theme from the whole Sonic franchise is Jungle Joyride Night, As a whole the night themes are super underrated
The entire sonic unleashed ost is so good
I love catching your sonic vids
Sonic music is always something special. Sticks with you for years
Tomoya Ohtani is a genius.
Early 90s focused more on Hip Hop House, New Jack Swing, late 90s focused more on Techo and Europop, Early 2000s leaned more into Metal and DnB
and today they're doing pretty much everything
So I don't think Sonic really has a distinct sound because it all depends on the artist interpretation of Sonic.
SONIC UNLEASHED YESSSS
When you did that one snow song from team sonic racing, part of that song was a remix of cool edge day (you even said these were both a little Christmas-y)
Cool edge day and night are 1 of my favorite snow/ ice themes my favorite being Magical Snow Day from Sonic Runners a mobile game with an amazing OST also Sonic unleashed is one of my favorite Sonic games.
I hope you do the rest of Sonic Unleashed requests you have, the night themes are so good, so jazzy.
Sonic Unleashed is actually my favorite Sonic game and has a killer soundtrack.
Please more Sonic Unleashed
ngl you gotta listen to endless possibility its the one everyone associates sonic unleased with
The cool edging is crazy
Yep I pretty much thought that the night version was too short as well. I was vibing then it just ended 😂
Cool Edge day is “Cold” while Cool Edge night is “Frigid”
You should listen to Windmill Isle and Jungle Joyride from sonic unleashed
Cool Edge - Night might be my favourite track from Unleashed. Jungle Joyride - Night is also amazing though.
Oh Ristar has good ice themes. 2 in fact! Ring Rink and Ice Scream. Also, some snowboard kids would do well here!!!
Let's go, we got glasses !!
You mentioned that cool edge night sounds similar to Street Fighter EX. You gotta listen to more songs from that series.
I LOVE Cool Edge (night), YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS.
That is all.
Looking forward to the cool vibes video.
The Night Battle music is still peak
YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO JUNGLE JOYRIDE NIGHT
Sonic Unleashed is a great game with a great ost to pair it with.
It's still a crime this track wasn't called 'Cool Runnings'
Unleashed's soundtrack is like top 5 of all time from Sonic. You honestly might be better off just binging entire OSTs at once from gaming giants like Sonic, Mario, Mega Man, Kirby, etc. because you are missing OUT.
Like, I wanna say 80 or 90% of Unleashed's soundtrack all goes as hard as the two stages you've listened to. Even the hub world themes are great in their own way.
Please react to end of the world from sonic 06.
Sonic unleashed is one of my favorite games Of all time you should listen to the night boss theme it’s really cool boss music that no one ever talks about
night reminds me of pkmn Gold & Silver's Ice Cave.
also if anyone's itching for more Ohtani and Kumatani jams, give Billy Hatcher's ost a listen
Every 3D sonic game before colours (2010) except heroes is heavily story based
I hope you'll explore more of Sonic Unleashed osts, the entire album is probably one of the best contender for Modern/Adventure Best Sonic Album
What's the song playing in the background during the intro of this video? It's so groovy!
(And yeah, Sonic Unleashed's soundtrack is flawless 🤩)
Very short summary trying to avoid spoilers)
And they both are composed by Revo, and both sound outstanding!
please do more Sonic Unleashed Day & Night songs! they’re so good!!
i think purely in terms of the instrumentals unleashed is my favourite, they're so good lol
Might i suggest jungle joyride daytime from sonic unleashed as well?
(Frontiers did not appeal to me much while many people call it the best of the series)
But I'm glad you checked out Cool Edge Day, that's pretty much good enough for me
Sonic unleashed released in 2008, it was the game right after sonic 06, which you've done plenty of reactions too. And for both games you are just scratching the surface Unleashed, 06, and adventure 2 are the best soundtracks in the franchise
out of all the songs i’m so surprised you still haven’t listened to Dragon Road Day
Unleashed has some of the best music in the series, next to Adventure 1 and Frontiers
You should start looking up videos with some gameplay in the background in my opinion. Actually watching the setting and set pieces enhances the music immensely most times.
If the whole game was just Werehog, I would've preferred it but I still think the wii version is far better including level design where there I do prefer the day stages.
Cold?
Then we also need him to react to ice cap from sonic 3, since he never went over second stage of sonic 3 he need to listen to that one song for sure, then listen to the new ice cap song that they exchanged it for sadly u_u
I prefer the Day mode of this song more, but both are just such massive vibes

You didn't put in Classic City Escape when it wasn't requested though
Yessir
Yeah, my favorite sonic game from the 3d ones. Ohtani was on fire writting this soundtrack and the sense of adventure to me is unmatched in video games in general. Love almost everything on this game and the few problems i have are easily fixed with small mods, but the core experience is just great. I would also recommend eventually listenning to the hub musics for these stages, which also have day and night versions (Holoska night, which is the hub for cool edge, is specially my fav of the hub themes).
