Jesse: "Sounds like something's on fire." Sonic: "The whole city's on fire!" Also Jesse: "It sounds urgent, like you're running away from something." Sonic: "THAT TORNADO'S CARRYING A CAR!!!"
I invite you to play 06, at least the fan remake, lol Unless you want to experience the original game, I only recommend a lot of free time and patience xD
Since you asked, both the original and the arranges are by Tomoya Ohtani, who took over from Jun Senoue as lead composer for the series starting with Sonic 06. And Crisis City is one of those tracks that immediately proved his mettle as a composer.
I think he proved himself as a composer when he joined the franchise and the first 2 music tracks he made were Pumpkin Hill and all the Chao race themes in SA2.
Crisis City stage in Sonic the Hedgehog(2006) is separated into four sections, so the music is also separated into four sections. The flames, skyscraper, tornado, and whirlwind. It is unlike other Sonic music because Sonic is in a very rare situation where he is in a huge metropolis which has been completely burned down and the ruins are on fire. And there is a section when a literal fire tornado chases you, so it is very urgent after all. Sonic Generations is the game where some kind of time merge happen and the young sonic(classic) meets the old sonic(modern) and experience past memories together. So you play the stages of same concept as two different sonic, and the music is different too.
If he likes Crisis City this much, someone needs to reccomend him Kingdom Valley once the official track from Shadow Generations comes out, so he can compare the two tracks.
Fyi Sonic Generations is the 20th anniversary game and consists of highlights from Sonic's history. So basically Generations is mostly remixes of existing levels (and usually fan favourites) so unsurprising that Crisis City was chosen to represent Sonic 06
The Sonic 06 version is the original. It's a game whose soundtrack goes as hard as the game is bad. Like, it goes unreasonably hard, and the game is unreasonably bad.
Changing directors and having your team majorly cut down twice mid development, and not being granted a single delay by your publisher will do that to ya.
It's interesting, I love the '06 version and Generations versions for practically opposite reasons; I like how long and spontaneous and loose the original 06 version is, but I also love the Generations versions for taking different parts of it and being kind of concise, tidied up versions of it. And obviously I love the approach they had to different instrumentation between classic and modern.
Before this I never entirely litsened to the 06 original version of Crisis City since I finished the level decently fast and always assumed that was most of it. What I was not expecting was a fake out into a reference to Radical Train sirens.
Sonic '06 story deals with time travel, so Crisis City is a level which takes place in a city which is fully apocalyptic, it's just fire and rubble and demons everywhere. That's why I love the violin in this piece, it feels like it represents Sonic himself, an element which shouldn't be there cutting through all the chaos, serene but still with a huge sense of speed.
I love that violin comment. Sonic has the His world motif constantly played by violins so its only natural for us to think that way when we hear it in crisis city or anywhere really. I genuinely wish they use the motif again with violins and they should add more violins in general because violins just reminds me of sonic now.
Hey I just want to say a huge thank you for making these kinds of videos I really appreciate it. Crisis City from Sonic 06 has always been one of my favorites. I've been listening to it since I was young and for the longest time. I’ve always gravitated towards video game music more than anything else and it’s still the same today. Sometimes after talking with friends and others, I feel like my taste in music is pretty niche. It often makes me feel a bit different or out of place because no one I know shares the same passion for VGM. But seeing you enjoy it as much as I do always brightens my day. And today after watching your reaction video to what is probably my favorite soundtrack ever, it honestly meant so much. Seeing you enjoy and praise it as one of the best you’ve ever heard brought tears to my eyes. It’s not every day I come across someone who shares my love for this iconic song. This really meant the world to me thank you so much for that. I respect you a lot and I’ll keep supporting you however I can.
The album version of the classic rendition mixes in the speed up theme, which is unique for almost every zone. This results in the tempo suddenly ramping up and the guitar shredding like crazy, it's insane 😅 shame that's not the version you listened to
I'm going to be honest, I've listened to the modern version over a hundred times and I've never noticed the piano in the background lmao. If I had to choose my favorite Sonic songs, it would be top 5 easily. Glad you listened to every version because I think it's very necessary to get the full picture, and I'm glad you like it! The 2nd Warning song you mention is from Lobotomy Corporation :p
Tomoya ohtani is the composer, he took up the mantle of lead composer after Jun senoue (the live and learn/open your heart composer). Crisis city is a burned up, post apocalyptic city. The level ends with a fire tornado going down a highway throwing cars at Sonic. Generations is an anniversary game that revisits the highlights of sonic history, along with remixed tracks
Most levels in Sonic 06 have 2 sections, each with their corresponding version of the level music (the most striking example could be Flame Core; Flame Core Volcano and Flame Core Cavern manage to feel like completely different themes). However, the flagship levels, Kingdom Valley and Crisis City, have 4 and FIVE sections respectively, and, rather than merely having multiple versions, those levels get a suite approach to their theme, with separate movements for each section. Crisis City only has 4 movements in its theme, as no character goes through all 5 sections; at most they go through 4 of them, and so all 4 parts of the suite get to play. Evidently, give Kingdom Valley and both Flame Cores a listening!
If you think this is impressive, you should react to Sega Sound Team remixing iconic Mario Songs in the Mario & Sonic Olympic Series. The variety is insane and you only scratched the surface!
this has been a long time coming and I'm so glad you finally heard it!! I love Crisis City so so much, it's just so peak, absolutely iconic I've got nothing meaningful to say so I'll keep my comment simple. I never get tired to hearing this track💙💙and the arrangements in Generations are also great! I'm very fond of the Classic version
I remixed this song YEARS ago back in college (which oh lord college was long enough ago for me to call it years ago). You said it yourself, less is more, and this song does that soooo well
Something that I find cool in the original version of crisis city, after the break of the song, it seem to start playing a leivmotif of Live and Learn, and I don't know if it is on purpose or not.
@@DasaltwarriorIt could be like the Endless Mine/City Escape thing, where Escape from the City sounds a lot like that song but the composers said they had never heard it before.
@@RCDreamsArts Another similar case is Dreams of an Absolution and Green Hill where there are big similarities between the 2 (Especially in the chorus) although the composers have almost certainly heard Green Hill
Fun fact for the first Crisis City. It wasn't 1 song. It was 4 at once. Crisis City was a 4 segment level, and that one song was all 4 segments in 1. And damn does it fit perfectly together!
I remember looking at magazines and trailers for sonic 06 back in the day and being so perplexed by seeing Sonic running in an apocalyptic setting. A City sinking in lava with monsters crawling around, and this song is just chef's kiss. This whole game's OST sounds like a AAA action Rpg, the violins are usually present and its got a fast beat classical feel a lot of times. Levels have different parts of the music track playing for them but when put together like this video it doesnt loop and just has a song that evolves with so much personality. Sonic 2006 is so special to me, even if its not looked at in a good light with its laughable story and glitchy nature. I love the themes and art direction for it. I also keep aquatic base on a playlist of favorite water vibe songs. If you are hungry for more you gotta check out Kingdom Valley's song.
Crisis City was also used in one of the most Iconic Sonic Fan Animations. Having this in the background as Sonic get a Fire Flower and absolutely tears into an entire airship of armored koopas is still one of the most awesome moments in fiction.
i've never heard this song (og version) without being distracted by playing the game. holy moly this is such a complex and interesting piece with some really nice sounding guitar to boot
When playing as Sonic or Shadow for Crisis City, I would race through the level so that 3:58 would sync up with the part where they race around the ledges of the building as the demons jump out before you leap across to the other skyscraper and smash all the windows as you blast through it. The music synced up would make it so epic, especially when you play as Shadow and he says ‘LETS. GET. MOVING’ I tell you it gave me goosebumps every single time 😅😅😅
One of my favourite videos from you, easily. Growing up with this series I kinda forget just how good these songs are but experiencing them once again through your reactions here reminded me why I love Sonic and the music!
Crisis City represents chaos thematically, not only in its setting like others have already explained. We're 200 years into the future, a future destroyed and engulfed by flames. A newcomer called Silver the Hedgehog gets shown by a time traveling God that Sonic is something called the "Iblis Trigger" and is responsible for the world's post-apocalyptic nature and sets off to kill him and change the future's fate. Sonic and Shadow find themselves in this future, Sonic runs through this destroyed city trying to find his way back home and discover the truth, Shadow apprehends the God I mentioned before who tells him humanity will eventually inevitably betray him cause they're afraid of his power and they will kill him. He reveals he's evil and asks Shadow to join him, where Shadow gives him the middle finger and vows to fight for the protection of humanity even if they will eventually betray him. So yeah, all of this + the flame tornado, skiing down falling skyscrapers, fighting Gods, death and destruction, people already explained the levels themselves. Crisis City IS CHAOS INCARNATE in the best way possible. It's one of the highlights of the entire Sonic franchise. The way you described it as urgent and everything at the end was pretty much spot-on.
Tomoya Ohtani's range always impresses me. Dude writes this and Flame Core-The Cavern- for the same game (with similar fire theming). Frontiers has EDM, full orchestra pieces, and metalcore. Then you look him up and he has a lo-fi youtube channel (completely non-gaming related if you wanna check it out!).
Ah yes, the track that made people sit up in 2006 and realise the king of Sonic music Tomoya Ohtani was well and truly in charge now. May he continue forever.
11:21 yeah sonic has a lot of vibes. Like if you do a beach VGM he'd have like 5 separate songs in there. ( a personally favorite is "A new venture" for the grade A beach/summer vibe.)
This is probably not intentional (but considering the context of Sonic Generations it probably is), Crisis City Classic seems to take cues from Sonic CD's "Metallic Madness B Mix". Which makes sense considering Crisis City is literally a bad future but in Sonic's world, not Little Planet.
Secret Answer to the question at the end, spoilers inbound: "The whole city is on fire!" So roughly about 200 years before this stage takes place (rest of the game mostly takes place in the present), a character died and a monster named Iblis was released which wreaked havoc and destruction on the world. Also, Iblis is basically one half of a sun god and is basically the fire half which is why everything is on fire.
There kind of is a fourth and fifth version of this theme actually. In 2021 they performed an orchestral symphony of most Sonic themes for the 30th Anniversary of the franchise (it's called the Sonic Symphony), it opens up the 3D era with the Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 Medley and it begins with Crisis City. Worth checking out. And then there's the Staff Roll (credits) medley for Sonic Generations which features another Crisis City remix, it sounds like a mix of OG and Modern Remix, its amazing.
Sonic Generations is kind of a celebration of the series as a whole, featuring stages (and songs) from all across Sonic's history. What's really cool is that each stage gets a classic (side scrolling) and modern (3D) interpretation, with mixes to match. So older songs are given a modern version, while more recent songs (like this one) basically get 'what if they were released in the 90s" remixes. And that's how you get Crisis City (90s Dance Hall Mix)
Oh I’m so glad you got to hear Crisis City. Literally the most infamous stage from 06. 😂 If you loved this then I hope someday you get around to Radical train and Kingdom Valley, if someone hasn’t voted it in already.
@@fissilewhistle Aquatic Base mentioned, PEAK MENTIONED 🗣️🗣️🗣️ Fr though, as much as I adore Crisis City and Kingdom Valley, Aquatic Base ALWAYS makes me feel something more than those two, the setting/aesthetic mixing with the music is amazing.
This song is accompanied by Sonic snowboarding down a collapsing building on a car door...while the entire place is on fire. Shame the game broke and ran at half speed for most of it. Project 06 made this stage actually feel great.
When I was a kid up until my late teenager years (99 to 10s) people always was so dismissive towards Sonic, I got bullied a lot for liking Sonic, but what ppl didn't understand that I was really obsessed with the soundtracks, they used to tell me I always listened to the same stuff, little did they know... I don't know if it was thanks to the movies, or frontiers or the boom tv series, but I'm glad and grateful that ppl outside the fandom is praising the soundtracks
In Sonic Generations, you play as two different Sonics. Classic Sonic from the Sega Genesis era and Modern Sonic from newer era. Sonic Generations is an anniversary game, and every stage is based on a previous stage from Sonic's 20+ years of gaming history. Classic and Modern Sonic have two complete different gameplay styles, with Classic being a 2D sidescroller and Modern being a 3D fast paced roller coaster. And of course, both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic have different themes for their stages, which is what you're hearing here.
You know, there’s a saying of sorts in the community that even if a Sonic game is bad, you can count on the OST to deliver regardless. Sonic 06 is perhaps the best example of this as it has, in my opinion, one of the greatest OSTs in the series. All of the people that worked on it truly gave it their all and it really is a shame that it has to be attached to one of the worst games in the series.
Somebody needs to donate some big bucks so he can listen to all the cyberspace themes (Including dlc) that'd be lit asf. (Also I'm so glad that he listened to Crisis City tho, it is a BANGER)
first off, THAT TORNADO'S CARRYING A CAR! secondly, there's a reason why I have a 30 minute Crisis City Modern loop on my phone for making any shopping outing rather epic
Im glad you finally listend to Crisis City. Sonic 06 imo has the best soundtrack in the series and Inhope one day you get to listen to Kingdom Valley and Aquatic Base.
I kept forgetting that this was supposed to be fire-themed, because I was getting straight-up wind. 'Urgent' is 100% the correct word, but the strings seem to duel with that urgency, free and unbothered and self-assured that they can _meet_ that urgency because they have a wide-open sky and they're doing kickflips off the airwaves. It sounds like the relief that comes when you leave doubt behind and fly. I'll have to check out your other elemental vids, because I'm super curious how these things are connoted beyond simple association.
I remember listening to this song for hours while doing homework in middle school, and people would call me weird for listening to sonic music. It just hits different especially when you know music
Sorry, buy I'm gonna choose the 2006 ver. The violin, the bass, and everything was so impressive to me. It shows the intense, show how destructing the city was, and show how determination the player is.
No matter how bad the Sonic games were back during his downward spiral, their OSTs just kept getting better and better. I am so glad you finally got to experience Crisis City, makes me excited for you to hear more from Sonic than just the finale/theme songs.
If you've only heard it in-game you probably didn't notice it because that drop is the transition from the 'Whirlwind' version of the track to the 'Tornado' version (there's a different arrangement of each track for each portion of the stage), but the area where Whirlwind plays is usually short enough to not reach that part of the song
@BulldogPCs That makes sense, especially in 06, where almost none of the audio was cut or mixed very well. Still, I guess I just never listened to a version that had all the parts of the song mixed together like this
@@Dasaltwarrior Fun fact: this and Kingdom Valley are actually the only stage in Sonic 06 to have all of its music condensed into a single song. All of the other stages are separated into their distinct sections (for example, Wave Ocean has "The Water's Edge" for the main part of the stage, and "The Inlet" for the Mach Speed section). I'm not sure if it's true for the in-game files, but it's true of the official soundtrack! Edit: I somehow completely missed Kingdom Valley while looking through the soundtrack.
Not only an amazing track, but also one of the coolest Stages in Sonic history. And it's something as basic as a city being on fire. That's pretty powerful. Lol.
This whole comment section has really made my day. Extremely nostalgic memories from middle school and high school are filling my mind while reading many of these. 😌
Sonic Generations (2011) was the series' 20th anniversary, and its whole thing was revisiting stages from a bunch of other games. Crisis City was a stage in Sonic the Hedgehog from 2006 and was an easy pick to be featured in Generations. If you've ever listened to City Escape, that stage was also featured in Generations (the name of the song is technically "Escape From the City." The Classic and Modern versions were because there were two different playable Sonics in Gens, "Classic" Sonic was a 2D side scrolling playstyle like the Genesis games, and "Modern" Sonic was 3D behind the back gameplay like the current games
Reminder that Sonic x Shadow Generations comes out on October 25th on everything, and it'd be a perfect game for you to stream and "come back" to Sonic! =D

Ah yes, the track that made people sit up in 2006 and realise the king of Sonic music Tomoya Ohtani was well and truly in charge now. May he continue forever.
Looking back, the OST was probably a huge part of why I 100%'d the game back on the old 360.
Crisis City Classic makes me wanna shout "MORTAL KOMBAT!" at every breakdown.
11:21 yeah sonic has a lot of vibes. Like if you do a beach VGM he'd have like 5 separate songs in there. ( a personally favorite is "A new venture" for the grade A beach/summer vibe.)
the classic version is my favorite, between the wailing guitar, the bongos, electronic bass and beats, and that background organ aaargh
This is probably not intentional (but considering the context of Sonic Generations it probably is), Crisis City Classic seems to take cues from Sonic CD's "Metallic Madness B Mix".
Which makes sense considering Crisis City is literally a bad future but in Sonic's world, not Little Planet.
Secret Answer to the question at the end, spoilers inbound:
"The whole city is on fire!" So roughly about 200 years before this stage takes place (rest of the game mostly takes place in the present), a character died and a monster named Iblis was released which wreaked havoc and destruction on the world.
I listen to sonic Gen crisis city when I’m at work all the time. Glad you listened to this gem
I just noticed they have the horn from the original at the end of the modern version
Oh I’m so glad you got to hear Crisis City. Literally the most infamous stage from 06. 😂 If you loved this then I hope someday you get around to Radical train and Kingdom Valley, if someone hasn’t voted it in already.
Everybody needs to listen to Aquatic Base and Kingdom Valley at some point in their life.
@@fissilewhistle Aquatic Base mentioned, PEAK MENTIONED 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Fr though, as much as I adore Crisis City and Kingdom Valley, Aquatic Base ALWAYS makes me feel something more than those two, the setting/aesthetic mixing with the music is amazing.
@@HydropacerThe vibes of Aquatic Base are just unmatched. There’s nothing else like it.
This song is accompanied by Sonic snowboarding down a collapsing building on a car door...while the entire place is on fire.
Shame the game broke and ran at half speed for most of it. Project 06 made this stage actually feel great.
Crisis City (the original from 06) is an absolute monster of a song. It's fucking iconic.
That tornado's carrying a car!
The Classic version of Crisis City from Generations is probably my favorite version of the song.
This might be my favorite video of yours
Sonic ‘06 came out in 2006, Sonic Generations came out sometime in the early 2010’s
Generations came out in 2011
And as of today, Sonic x Shadow Generations is out for deluxe digital PS4 buyers 👀
When I think of fire themes, I think of Bower’s Road. Interestingly, the beginning of this song has the exact same progression.
Just a full tone/step up from this, from C minor to D minor.
Somebody needs to donate some big bucks so he can listen to all the cyberspace themes (Including dlc) that'd be lit asf. (Also I'm so glad that he listened to Crisis City tho, it is a BANGER)
it was nice seeing you enjoy yourself this much, i hope people's suggestions keep hitting the nail on the head for you in future
I love sonic OSTs so dayme much like how was I supposed to pay attention to the game when sonic music this good
first off, THAT TORNADO'S CARRYING A CAR!
secondly, there's a reason why I have a 30 minute Crisis City Modern loop on my phone for making any shopping outing rather epic
This video reminded me of how good both generations versions of the song were oh my god...
Im glad you finally listend to Crisis City. Sonic 06 imo has the best soundtrack in the series and Inhope one day you get to listen to Kingdom Valley and Aquatic Base.
I’m so glad sonic music is back. We seriously need lots more of it lol.
A ruined future where there is no hope and a continuously burning world the atmosphere of Crisis City is unforgettable.❤️
Love your reactions to all kind of video game music, bud. keep it up!
btw for me this song always reminded me of Bowser's Road from Super Mario 64
No matter how bad the Sonic games were back during his downward spiral, their OSTs just kept getting better and better. I am so glad you finally got to experience Crisis City, makes me excited for you to hear more from Sonic than just the finale/theme songs.
Good reaction!
Maybe a Sonic Game in the Games Channel? 👀
I'VE NEVER HEARD THE DROP FROM AROUND THE 6:25 MARK, HOLY HELL THAT WAS HAWT
If you've only heard it in-game you probably didn't notice it because that drop is the transition from the 'Whirlwind' version of the track to the 'Tornado' version (there's a different arrangement of each track for each portion of the stage), but the area where Whirlwind plays is usually short enough to not reach that part of the song
@BulldogPCs
That makes sense, especially in 06, where almost none of the audio was cut or mixed very well. Still, I guess I just never listened to a version that had all the parts of the song mixed together like this
SAME BRO! Gotta love this channel for putting me in my place even with games I thought I knew everything about in terms of OST lmaoo
@@MattTOB618 Kingdom valley also does this
Not only an amazing track, but also one of the coolest Stages in Sonic history. And it's something as basic as a city being on fire. That's pretty powerful. Lol.
I 100% agree with you, the Rhodes piano is my most favourite instrument of all time 😭
Thank you for reminding me these songs exist. (Especially Crisis City Classic)
Bro looked like he was about to cry holy this was amazing
This whole comment section has really made my day. Extremely nostalgic memories from middle school and high school are filling my mind while reading many of these. 😌
Sonic Generations (2011) was the series' 20th anniversary, and its whole thing was revisiting stages from a bunch of other games. Crisis City was a stage in Sonic the Hedgehog from 2006 and was an easy pick to be featured in Generations. If you've ever listened to City Escape, that stage was also featured in Generations (the name of the song is technically "Escape From the City."
The Classic and Modern versions were because there were two different playable Sonics in Gens, "Classic" Sonic was a 2D side scrolling playstyle like the Genesis games, and "Modern" Sonic was 3D behind the back gameplay like the current games
Crisis City from Sonic 06 is one of my top 10 favorite Sonic tracks 😊❤
Yeah, there's a reason we all love this song. Absolute masterpiece. So glad that it impacted you so much!!
Truly powerfull music. I'm so happy that, regardelss the quality of the games, the soundtracks never miss
you love drum and bass, youd LOVE system shock 2's ost
Reminder that Sonic x Shadow Generations comes out on October 25th on everything, and it'd be a perfect game for you to stream and "come back" to Sonic! =D
I always go back to this stage when I play generations 🔥
Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 ost was going for a movie style soundtrack
The Soundtrack has a lot of different sounds
