- Tonight I test out the ultralight Travelbird Skynest All in One Hammock System. This set up is so simple, anyone can do it in around 1 minute.
It is designed to be used as a hammock, with or without insulation, an open hammcok, a ground tent and a tarp on the floor. There are some fantastic design details on this hammock that some larger companies could make a note of but also one major flaw.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this hammock. I love the optimistic title of the video. From what I saw, this is not a hammock I would buy. First off, it looks a little short. Getting a flatter lay in a gathered-end hammock is a function length, width and sag. The shorter the hammock, the harder it will be to get on a diagonal, and therefore a flat lay. Secondly, having the hammock, bugnet and tarp all connected sounds clever in theory because it eliminates a lot of extra mesh material, but comes with a number of limitations. Namely, anything you do to the tarp affects the hammock and viceversa. On very warm nights if you want to pitch the tarp high and spread out wide to allow more ventilation, the hammock won't let you, because as soon as you put your weight in it, the tarp will get pulled down from all sides. Also, I believe this is the reason why you got so much condensation in it, the tarp needs a vent up high somewhere, but the only vent was down around the mesh. On more standard set-ups where the tarp and hammock are separated, condensation has room to escape through either end of the tarp, and even if some droplets do form underneath they can roll off to the sides as long as you don't touch or shake the tarp, which is impossible to avoid when the hammock is connected to the tarp.
I won't say anything about the pad shifting around because I've always thought pads are less than ideal in gathered-end hammocks.
Overall, an interesting design but doesn't seem very functional in real life. Thanks for putting in the time and the effort in producing this video.
Agree with a lot you say there although weather dependant, I generally camp in cold and have the tarp almost fully enclosed around me so apart from that bit the other points yes. I'm 6'4 and could lay diagonal but only just so it's hard to say really without a more average person in it. I think it's a great design overall and they've now updated it after my video and I've just put out an updated version review of this hammock. 👍

Interesting indeed. Many thanks for this one! 👍🏻 I have a hammock without sleeve for a sleeping pad, so I sleep directly on it. A big Agnes rapide sl, that I have dotted with a silicone gun to stop it from sliding.
I've literally just camped out in the new version of this. They've revised it and have the option of a mat that connest inside. Video will be up next week 👍
Some interesting ideas on that. 2 things from me, I think it could do with being a little longer (camera angle maybe) 🤔 Using a sleep pad in a hammock will always cause a few issues I find. My DD XL does the same as this and its a bit of a pain. Only hammock I have used that it works on is the Solognac one, but that has a pocket at the head and foot end to put the ends of the mat in. Simple solution but no other manufactures do it as far as I know. Regards Allan.
Yeah i think they've done well with their first design but like everything it can always be improved. Possibly even and adjustable strap under the hammock to tighten around any mat maybe 🤷🏼♂️🤔👍
…or they could save the excess material used for the mat sleeve by omitting it altogether (saving weight) and making the hammock for underquilt only, and/or possibly making it longer for a flatter lay. Parachute material is more breathable and thus comfortable against the skin, and if you’ve ever slept in a hammock with a good quality and well dialled-in down underquilt you’ll be most unlikely to want to go back to using a mat, much less a mat that moves about under you all night. Brave of you to attempt to sleep in it with a mat, I don’t see how long the hammock is, but the shorter they are the more prone to making for an uncomfortable night, 11 foot is about the minimum for a 6 foot plus person IMHO. 👍🏻🥃
I generally use underquilt in my non flat hammocks like my onetigris but also have pads with the Amok and Haven obviously and both are good but the Amok and Haven are flat lay and way more comfy
Lots of nice features.
The hammock is basically a slippery tube and any mat that goes inside goes for a ride
It’s would be nice to see you use it with an under quilt and see how your sleep quality is

also for the pad if there were a couple snaps on the underside to hold it from sliding would make it better that way you can decide on which way you want to lie. right to left or left to right.

I've had the same "moving mat" issue with several double layered hammocks. If I had the money, etc, I'd invent a 3 panel hammock. Two panels for the sides, and the main panel that you sleep on would essentially be a double layered pocket for a mat. I'd also add a thin zip on/off top quilt along the hammocks edges. This'd be a couple of centimetres below the zipped on bug net. Just a thought.
Good idea but wouldn't there be a gap between the top quilt and the mat leaving a cold spot on the sides?
@NoviceWildCamper true, I suppose a loose top quilt would drape onto you, just another barrier layer. I'd imagine most folk would still use a sleeping bag. I know I'd fill the gap, what with being a bit chunkier than I used to be LOL
Or have the zipper set higher up the quilt material so that when affixed the excess material does fill that gap.

With a mat that has vertical baffles like the Amok Winer lite you probably would have had a flatter lay. I also could not tell from the pocket but was it at a good angle for a flat lay. I do not typically need a pillow in the hammocks I use as it is already comfortable without one.
Because the pocket was full width you could angle it diagonally for a flatter lay but the problem was it didn't stay there. They have since redesigned it and is now sorted on kickstarter.
Tukeke make a great, cheap but very light and long (11’) good quality hammock, weighing around 450gr. That said, I still carry a tarp, guys, straps, top and underquilt (both down), and a half bug net in summer, so the weight creeps up, though not as much as when I tent camp. There’s of course a bit more in the set up than the one you show here, it comes down to what you want, a self-😮testing set-up or a ‘skip the foreplay’ setup! Thanks for the video, subbed 🖐🏻🥃
Cheers buddy. I think for the total weight this is a great set up amd thry are looking at redesigning the hammock to accommodate the pad better and not to move around.
I keep my hammock, straps an under quilt in my sleeping bag sack all rolled up fits snug an sets up in seconds..i need to add the tarp an sleepin bag lol ultra quick release. Be rollin 1 of my finest in minutes

Thanks for the useful review as I am considering the Kickstarter that's currently running for the hammock (which links to your review). I notice the hammock straps have to be at quite a steep angle to allow the Tarp to be high enough above you. I guess that makes it harder to lie flat across the hammock? I know that DD Hammocks advise a 30 degree hang to ensure you can lie across and avoid being forced into a banana shape!
Yes and they have also redesigned the pad section to hold it in place unlike my pre production model 👍
They have to put in a sleeve like the amock have to put the airmat in place. Or a more rubber material to stop it sliding. Great review!

Cannot understand why a see through roof and tarp has not been made .
You get in and cannot see a thing . Ive had deer attacking me one night in a hammock , id lift the tarp and these little eyes glowing . . Getting closer and closer and whistling .

The biggest problem with a hammock is the requirement of two trees. Your trees are way too close to on another in my opinion .
Tree distance is fine and the straps aren't long enough to go much further specially if they were thicker.

I'm not into them , handy for a kayak trip to an island, handy to hold gear up off the ground or sit in during the day .
And handy if there are rats .

I think they have some interesting innovations for an all-in-one solution. My Hennessy hammock came with a similar tarp mount, with prusik loops on the suspension ropes. But my first mod was to swap out the suspension with continuous loops and whoopie slings. 😂
For me, one of the highlights of hammock camping is customizing the setup. I enjoying picking out my own suspension and tarp. So this one isn't going on my short list.
It's good for an all in one and I think has an option for modding to suit. I'd try it again tbh 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper I like a bigger tarp so I can hang my pack under cover and off the ground.
Or I'll leave my tarp in the snake skin and have a nice view of the sky. I suppose that could be done, but then I'd need a separate bug mesh too.
That looks very similar to the NightCat, NightCat have now made theirs a flat lay like the haven.
I have the old NightCat and the Haven I love them both but the Haven is in my opinion unbeatable. I had the DD XL and like Allen said I struggled with the mat moving all over the place.
If they can solve that problem, it looks to be a great Hammock.

DDXL,.......if you know where your Matt needs to be sew on some velcro strips to the base layer and stick them onto your Matt or stitch the two layes together to create a pocket for it.
Swap the velcro for the under layer out and sew a couple of toggles on. I find it better for holding the under layer in place also.........I put toggles on my DD under blanket. I find on the XL the under blanket can slide down so having toggles either side hold it in place better.
I use a exped ergo hammock combi. Good for side sleepers, big tarp. But expensive

Hello, thank you for this video. I have haven hammock and I am happy. But in winter time, you have to use Insulated pad cover. No condensation inside. I have one question. Where can I get the camping table in your video ? Its great. Tomas
I have the Haven too. I don't think the pad is as warm as they state to be honest. I made the table. I make and sell camping tables but I just made the hammock one for myself as I needed a higher one. I'm not going to make them to sell though as I just don't have enough time. Its fairly simple though. An adjustable fishing bank stick and an aluminium sheet cut to size. Drill a hole through the middle and bolt through to the stick. I have a rubber grip surface one side and just metal the other for when I'm using alcohol stoves.

Why do you think that? With the weight of this all in one with fly and bugnet plus the ability to fit a sleep pad or quolt its hard to beat. Although I prefer my haven or Amok but they're much heavier 👌
I still can't get on with hammock camping. And this design hasn't convinced me, although you sold it very well.
Totally agree that they're a heavier setup than other types of camping, especially in the winter.
I get this is designed for it, but I'm not sure why so many people are commenting about putting air beds in other hammocks like the DDXL.. its just not really the done thing but I suppose if you don't own an underblanket then maybe... but it still seems daft to creare a problem for no reason when you can just get an underblanket.
Overall it's a better design than the NightCat, I gave mine away as it has too many issues.
I think I was the only youtuber not to have been sent a njghtcat 😂 this is a decent hammock though. Will work better with the underquilt. I'll maybe try it again with a quilt. 👍
Hennessy Hammocks has a reflective bubble pad that connects with loops in the hammock to keep it from shifting. It's a neat idea, but I agree. Underquilts just somehow feel like they're more faithful to the hammock vibe.

Never tried a hammock, being a side or front sleeper I can’t see it would work for me. I think my back would protest greatly at being bent all night but for younger folk it might well be fine.
I'm a side sleeper. There's a lot of hammocks that work well for side sleepers. Take a look at Haven or amok. Both excellent for side sleepers 👍

@@hypo345 I always wanted to try hammock camping but was concerned about my bad back and sleeping banana style. The Haven and the Amok have honestly given me the best sleeps I've ever had 👍

excellent review. It does have some nice features but I won't be swapping it for my Heldson Hammock. That is a 2 minute set up and perfect lay every time and I can side sleep. But at 2.9kg it is a bit heavy compared to this unit.
Does look good that Helsdon. Not seen it before but seen similar spreader bar hammocks. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper The Helsdon has a ton of storage at the foot and head endss o you can keep your gear inside with you. I have a Haven XL as well but the achilles heel there is the mattress is an intrinsic part of the designa nd if you get apuncture the unit is pretty useless, whereas the Helsdon can use a yoga mat, an inflatable or as I do, a mylar emergency blanket.
Yeah I habe the Haven xl and the first mat failed making it very uncomfortable and cold. I also use the Amok which is a great hammock but the storage although plenty, needs to be inproved.
My first impression is that it looks good.
I would agree that an improvement would be to have a sleeping pad sleeve to create a fixed diagonal flat lay.
Questions for you from the information you have received.
1. How long is the hammock and what is the weight limit i.e. 10 ft, 11ft, or 12ft?
2. Would the Onewind under quilt fit this hammock?
3. Would a sinch buckle/whoopie sling at either end be an improvement?
It's 10ft as far as I'm aware. I think the onewind would fit it. Next time I use it I will try. And yes they'd probably work as it's only a carabiner but you'd need a separate line for the tarp then as it needs to be stretched to something to be taught. 👍

I like the freedom of a tent and not needing "the right kind of tree" lol also I want to get out after an hour or so and move around...
I find hamlclsk give me even more freedom. Its hard to find somewhere you can tent camp stealthy sometimes whereas there's always a little woodland to be found. 👍
That's the beauty of a tarp and hammock, you don't need to lie down, it doubles as a seat. Easier to cook and store stuff.
When the weather is bad they are more sociable or camping with others.

On the topic of moving mats, how slippery is the light tour in a tent? Col recommended it to me a while ago but i had some stuff going on so couldn't get it until now.
I've had no issues with it but you could always add his light af mat. It would never move then 👍

@CuriousGoose so that's not you slipping off it's the mat slipping away. I've not had the issue with this one but might be worthwhile investing in the light af mat as well

The one wind tarp is a good one as well it's the most expensive one on amazon but it's amazing and has doors incase the weather takes a turn for the worst but that set up your reviewing there looks pretty awesome
Yeah I've got it. Used it in loads of my kids in fact I use the one wind tarp on my haven hammock as well as that ones too small 👍

What little table is that and where to get it? Great video!
I made it. Its reversible. Steel one side for when I'm using my alcohol stove as it gets hot on the bottom and rubber coated the other side for grip when using gas or for anything else.
