I've been visiting Madrid for many years. It never disappoints me , nor I get tired of coming repeatedly to this cultural paradise. It's a vibrant city that offers everything one looks for, from multiculturalism, history, art, museums, concerts, flamenco, food, nightlife, architecture, educational programs to a peaceful-relaxing vacation outside the city. It's just an amazing place. I highly recommend it.
Thank you for your comment and your passion for Madrid, Fabian!
Fabian : actually you are also madrileño. Thank you brother.
Going tomorrow!
This is the best channel about Spain my wife and I have seen in all youtube. Thanks for making this videos!
Delighted to hear that, Luis!
What is wonderful about your reviews is your honesty. Add to this a great understanding of the neighbourhoods and we naive travellers have some prospect of improving the outcome of our trip with less stress and more wow.Keep going you have more potential yet :) . Thank you
Thank you so much for your kind words, Rodrigo. Delighted to hear we are making a difference. All the best!
I just spent 5 days in Madrid. From 28.02-05.03. I was in Hostal Victoria II in the very heart of Madrid, Sol. During my stay, i had the privilege to visit Royal Palace of Madrid, Mercado de San Miguel, Catedral de la Almudena, Plaza Mayor, Arco de la Victoria, Museo America, Faro de Moncloa, Calle 365 to enjoy a Flamenco show, etc. It was such an enjoyable time ,well spent and I hope to visit again soonest because I am certain there is so much more to be seen and experienced.
Great to hear that, it seems you made the most of your time in Madrid! We were in Madrid during those same dates. All the best!
Hello. How was the hostel? Could you please drop me a link to this hostel. Thanks
@@elmanful1 hi Elman, here's the link to Hostal Victoria in booking.com ➡️ www.booking.com/hotel/es/hostal-victoria-i-y-ii.es.html?aid=359492

Excellent video. Very didactic.
We stayed at the Hotel Europa in the Sol section. We found the area to be exciting, fast, fun, and central to everything. We walked everywhere from our hotel and felt perfectly safe. There was only one protest while we were in Spain and it took place across the street from the Prado Museum. And even that protest was well organized, civil, and over quickly, at which point a crew came in and cleaned up everything in record time. I would stay in Sol again with no problem.
We don't think the Sol area is the most beautiful part of Madrid, far from it, but as you rightly pointed out, the convenience of the location is simply extraordinary. All the best!
So far i surf the net, your posts are by far the BEST. And nothing less than THE best.
👍
We preferred the busses over the underground. They are very simple to use, air-conditioned, have excellent displays and go almost everywhere. AND of course you SEE the city while you drive with them.
Thanks Tony. I've been watching travel video blogs for many years and your series is amongst the very best. Excellent presentation of key information in a clear and logical format.
You can't imagine how happy we feel to hear that!
Hola amigos!
The 2 neighborhoods we prefer are: Las Letras and Chamberi. Las Letras has the great location close to the main locations in the city, excellent hotel we have found at the Room Mate Alba (where you can even stay in a first floor room and not hear anything from the street due to the great soundproofing). Plus it has both the touristy and local places to eat nearby so a wide selection of options. Next, Chamberi lets you live like a local. Hang out in a park (our favorite is Placa de Olivide) and watch the families, the grandparents with the grandkids and the residents just enjoy life.
Thank you for sharing your preferences, Art.
Your videos are so informative and helpful, clear and easily understood. Thanks so much for doing these. Yours are without question the best for needed information! GREAT JOB!
We thank you for your kind words.
Madrid is a very charming city I love it, I hope I can visit again sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!

I visited Madrid last month and have fondly memories of this wonderful city. In a few words, I fell in love with Madrid. Looking forward to go back next year 😊
👏 Great to hear that!
Excellent video. I stayed in Sol and in Gran Via. Both are great; you can walk to many attractions. Lively, Vibrant; just what I like.
Both areas are VERY close to each other.
Agree! Busy, loud, but incredibly handy locations.
Sol is the best!!! I love it there. Gran Via too. Excellent recomendation!

I prefer to stay in the Salamanca district. It's an upscale neighborhood within walking distance to Gran Via and other areas mentioned in this video. No beggars. No junkies. Safe and quiet.
As a blanket recommendation for first-timers, we would avoid it, unless they know well where they are going. The district is large and some areas are nowhere near the Gran Vía. But yes, it’s a nice neighbourhood, and the area around Serrano can be quite convenient.
Thank you so much for this informative video. We'll be going to Madrid this Fall and will start looking for hotels. You video is very helpful.

thank you for your honest and informative video. We are looking forward to again visit Madrid soon this year. This time we are only driving by car or taxi (physical limitation). Can you suggest places to drive/visit within the city. like vistas; parking accessible plaza/parque, or similar interests to flavour the neighborhood and modern culture. please continue to share your trips. driving around spain is a delight,
Hello there. Unfortunately, we haven't got any experience of driving in Madrid, it's the last thing we would think of doing - while we understand you have perfectly valid reasons for doing so. A taxi, in our opinion, would be a much better alternative to the car. Many neighborhoods are best visited on foot, even more so because they are in pedestrian only zones. So, basically, choose the places you want to visit from our list and get there by taxi. The exceptions are the largish Parque del Retiro, where you would obviously need to talk, and many streets in the oldest part of Madrid, where traffic is restricted. Madrid's official tourism website has an entire section dedicated to Accesible Madrid where I'm sure you can find lots of interesting ideas: www.esmadrid.com/en/accessible-madrid Have a great trip!

I will be staying in Calle de Barcelona in Sol soon. Hopefully it will not be too loud at night 😉
The main issue right now is the major construction work going on as the Puerta del Sol is being revamped.

👏👏👏
What is your take on Hotel Regina? Thank you for your dedication. Muchas gracias!
Ana, we've never stayed at the hotel but it has a splendid location for tourism in Madrid. Bear in mind nearby Puerta del Sol is undergoing a huge reform so there's plenty of construction work going on in the area. It will last till spring 2023.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal No wonder I saw a lot of 🚧 🏗 🦺 construction-related materials on the street view in Google maps. Good to know it was not a temporary thing!
Muchísimas gracias otra vez. 🙏🏼
Thanks Tony for the informative and honest video, I will be travelling to Spain for first time . Plan to stay at Double Tree by Hilton - Prada in Madrid. Is the hotel at good location? Thanks
Hi Sharon, your hotel is in the heart of the Barrio de las Letras, one of our favourite neighbourhoods in Madrid. The only down side to its location is that you have to walk a little bit to reach the nearest metro station. Other than that, it's a top choice. All the best!
Thank you for the amazing information. Do you have a video for food tours or recommendations? THANKS!
Thank YOU! 👏👏👏 We haven't got that comment yet, we are only getting started on the channel. But it's on the list of ideas for future videos. Regards!
@MJ M Look for the Spain Reveal Channel, great videos on food, restaurants and bars

We will be in Madrid this May, staying at INNSiDE by Melia on the Madrid Gran Via. It appears to be a very nice hotel with rooftop bar, what are your thoughts Tony? Thank you for all the great information as well!
Your hotel has a brilliant location for tourism in Madrid! All the best!
Very informative video, thank you for sharing. What do you think of the hotel Palacio de los Duques?

Great channel, why don't you make daily menus in for example, Granada, Seville? Any advice about restaurants in mentioned cities? Thanks!
Thank you! It takes time and repeated trips to any city to publish a restaurant guide. So we would have to go for at least two weeks to any of those cities to produce that content. And right now, we don't have the resources to do so. So far, we have only done so for Madrid and Barcelona.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Mil gracias!! 🤗

@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Saludos hasta Zaragoza!
Will be traveling to Madrid next month. Super excited! I will be staying in two neighborhoods the first located in Templo Debod and the 2nd @ Gran Via District. Any suggestions what to expect and what to do at my first stop.
Templo de Debod is not a region as such, rather a monument. It's much easier for us to comment on specific locations. But the region is fine, the closer to Plaza de España, the better. As for Gran Vía, we talk about it on the video. It will all depend on where exactly on the Gran Vía you are going to stay, it is a long avenue.
Tony, you are the best tour guide I have ever known! I am planning my five week holiday in Andalusia through all of your videos!!!!
If I could ask you one question regarding Madrid, I have an offer to stay in the area of San Isidro, on Calle de Alcandón. There seems to be a bus that runs all day with a half an hour ride into town. What would be your thoughts? It does save me almost $1,000 Canadian for the five nights but I am older and travelling alone.
Other than this question, I have watched every one of your videos and I have planned my entire trip through you, so I thank you so so very much!
Hi Carolyn, glad to hear we are being of help! The area is far from the centre, but if the savings are massive and you are absolutely sure about the place where you are about to book, we would not discard it. All the best!
Thank you! Love you both!@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal
Going to Madrid again just my favorite vacation place but always stay at Petit Palace Posada del Piene. What do you think about the hotel. I don’t even check others 😮
To be honest, it doesn't really matter much what we think of the hotel, if you are comfortable with it, it means it is the right choice for you. The Petit Palace hotel chain has very nice hotels. The location is excellent, if you don't mind the crowds.
Awesome content!!
How do I get in touch with you?
You've already done it!
Hi Tony: loved the video on locations to stay in Madrid. We're planning our first trip to Madrid in Sept 2023. Can you give me some advice (good/not good for the following locations). We're semi-retired and want access but don't want loud nightlife/party area. These are all in Madrid City Center
1. Calle de Augusto Figueroa near Chueca station
2. Calle Lope de Vega near Anton Martin station
3. Cuesta Santo Domngo near Santo Domingo station
4. Plaza Segovia Nueva near La Latina station
Also are there any festival/big events in September that we should be aware of before booking our accommodations? Thank you!!
Hi Karen, all your choices are in the core of the centre of Madrid, so you cannot rule out noise in any of them. Among the four, we would go for number 3, in terms of location, proximity to points of interest and transport logistics.
There are no festivals in September we know of, but there can always be an unexpected event that hasn't been scheduled yet. That should not affect your choice of accommodation. Al the best!
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Thank you so much Tony! Which of the 5 neighborhoods in your video is #3 located in? I hope we can meet you and your wife when we come to Madrid.
@@karenjohnson-young8982 it in in Sol, close to Gran Vía. We don't live in Madrid but, who knows, we go there very often! All the best.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Thanks so much!
Hello! I noticed this video was created a few years ago. With all the increase in tourists in 2024, would you say you have changed your mind in regards to recommendations? I am staying a week in Madrid, with 1-2 day trips to Toledo and/or Segovia. We are then proceeding to Granada and Sevilla. Would you recommend Barrio las Letras or Salamanca? In Barrio las letras, I am looking into an airbnb for our family that is very close to the Atocha train station. My other family is staying in Salamanca and say transportation to the center is only 10 minutes away (not sure if they are just saying that to get me to rent closer to them, ha ha). What would your recommendation be?
Hello, we are planning a new video on the topic for the end of the year, but our recommendations are very similar. In the specific case of Salamanca, you have to be extremely careful, as the district is huge. 10 minutes away from the centre is a very generous estimate. It could take you 10 minutes to get to the nearest metro station.
The thumbnail in this video with the bar in the background is beautiful! Where is that location?
That is the Mercado de San Miguel.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal thank you!
Hi Tony. My husband and I are avid followers. We will spend at least 2 weeks in September. From Zaragoza we will ride the train to Madrid. We plan 3 days. We then plan to go to Avila (2 nights), Salamanca 2 nights, and Segovia 1 night (as you suggested). We then plan to stay another 3 nights in Madrid. We hope to do a day trip to Toledo. From Madrid, we go back home via Barajas International Airport.
Can you give us suggestions on where to stay in Madrid considering our plans? Also, can you suggest which airport transportation to use? Our flight leaves at 10:30am on a weekday.
Hello there. The places we suggest on the video would be fine for you. A hotel near Atocha station would be a good idea too. See our video on transportation from Madrid airport here: ruclips.net/video/QRjyWKX_HvU/видео.html All the best!
Another great video with so much information. We are only in Madrid for one day/night for a concert. Staying at the RIU Plaza Espana. I know you suggested four full days but it cannot happen. Is there one landmark to visit that you could suggest as we only have a couple of free hours??
A couple of free hours? Wow. Walk to the Palacio Real, the Cathedral and the Templo de Debod, all near your hotel. All the best.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Yes sadly our itinerary has us squeezing in Valencia, Madrid and Barcelona all in five days!!!! But looking forward to briefly visiting your beautiful cities and your high speed train service which we don’t get in Canada!!!
Thanks for your wonderful video 👍🏻 i am planning to stay at Suites Viena Plaza de España hotel on September , i saw a near metro station . Do you recommend it or no ?
Our pleasure! We haven't stayed at that hotel but it's in a good part of Madrid, near Plaza de España.
Do you have any suggestions on service apartment rentals? I like the idea of Airbnb but the certainty of an established business feels more secure.
Hello, in our recent list of recommendations we include a serviced apartment: ruclips.net/video/mreZmX_wlaE/видео.html
Hi Tony love your videos. We are ending a cruise in Barcelona from Portugal. We thought we would take the train to San Sebastián, for a short stay and then train to Madrid. Then train to in Malaga before flying back to Vancouver Canada. We are traveling May/ June 2024. I tried to book the Renfe train but am assuming I can’t book it until 60 days in advance, is that correct?
Only have 2 days to spend in Madrid, what is your top things to see?
Hi Juddy, on the train issue, see ruclips.net/user/shortswmKDTtNRV8c There is no fixed rule, some times the tickets are made available six months in advance, sometimes 30 days. See the must-sees in Madrid here: ruclips.net/video/7q1qv-NaHv4/видео.html All the best!
Hi. Thank you so much for your informative video. I was looking at an Airbnb in Tetuán district but i fear it may not be safe & a little too far out. Could you please give me your opinion. Thanks for your help. My husband & I are visiting Madrid in September. Thank you
Hi, Tetuán is quite large and yes, it can be far from the core centre - although not unsafe. Proximity of a metro station should be your priority. For an immense list of reasons (among others, having wrecked havoc in the tourist cities of Spain), we avoid staying at AirBnb anywhere in Spain.
Why is it necessary to be next to underground transportation when looking for accommodations.
My wife surprised me with trip to madrid now we are panicking bec it is only 3 weeks away and no accommodations yet.
Thank you for your help.
If you stay close to an underground station, you won't waste time during your stay when it comes to using the public transport system to go places.
Great video and helpful. 9 of us will be in Madrid for 2 days after Christmas. We like to Walk to nearby attractions and Gran Via. Where would you recommend we stay at?
Gran Vía sounds like the perfect location, but our top 3 in the video would be the right choice for you. Hotel Riu is great: www.booking.com/hotel/es/riu-plaza-espana.es.html?aid=359492
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Thank you for the recommendation. That might be a bit out of our budget. We have look at other properties.
What do you think of the Novotel Madrid Centre on Calle O'Donnell? it is in the barrio de Salamanca. Would love to hear your opinion. Gracias.
Nice area but it's a bit far from the tourist centre of Madrid, you will need to take a metro/bus ride on a daily basis.
We’re visiting madrid at the end of March and will be arriving by car. Do you have a hotel with on-site parking recommendations? Thank you.
We don't have any listing ready, but in Booking.com you can search for hotels with on-site parking.
Hola. We are staying at the petit palace savoy en el retiro. Que tu crees.
Great hotel chain and beautiful location in a fine area of Madrid.
Hi Iwe need some insights on the best place to go to watch a flamenco dance in Madrid Barcelona or Granada. Are you able to provide any advice? Please let us know if we can contact you directly. Thanks
So, people, which one should I choose, SOL, Gran via, barrio de austrias? For historical places, I believe barrio de austrias is the best
Elman, the three areas you mention are really close to each other, you can't go wrong. But yes, the Madrid de los Austrias is best for history.
Hi do you have a video about the cost to stay in some of the places listed. From budget/ medium / to expensive.
Hi there, so far, we have this video: ruclips.net/video/fpFyT5w4dgE/видео.html
I'm coming to Madrid in late September and planning road trip to Lisbon. Any advice where to stay in Madrid (parking??) And in which cities to stay while on trip ( Toledo, Sevilla, Granada..?) Gracias!!
Our advice would be to pick up your rental car on the day you leave from Madrid. Parking in the centre of Madrid for free is not an option and renting a car to visit the city is one of the biggest mistakes you could probably make. We intend to set up a consultancy service to help with the design of itineraries through Spain. Until that service is up and running, we hope you can make use of the material we have already published in the channel.
Thank u!! Such a helpful video. May I know your opinion about hotel; location in Plaza Espana? I see its close to Grand Via but on a quite street. Is it close or? Thank u
Plaza de España is on one end of the Gran Vía. Good location.
Very helpful vlog! Also, how does one find a long term stay accommodation? Where do I go, and who do I go to? Thank you in advance for any response!
Hello there, we're specialists on tourist trips to Spain but that falls beyond our realm of expertise. We have no experience whatsoever.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal I see...thanks just the same.
Madrilenos make Madrid the best city in the world
I live in NY. I don't know if you've ever been but if so, can you give a comparison to which neighborhoods malasana and la latina in NY?
We've been a few times to New York but find it incredibly difficult to establish comparisons. You could find some similarities between, for instance, Williamsburg and Malasaña, but the differences are soooo huge! Madrid has little to do with New York.
Hi! I’ll be in Madrid on March 23. Which hotel would you recommend? Traveling with a teenager.
We don't do blank hotel recommendations, but if you find one that suits your budget, let us know and we will tell you what we think.
We will have 2 nights in Madrid, I am confused why you said to avoid it if driving a car? There has to be parking garage somewhere??
Avoid using a car to move within Madrid. Explained in more detail here: ruclips.net/video/lTu3jLq0gPk/видео.html
It’s my first time and I wanted to be in the middle as well enjoy the cheap food the locals eat, I don’t want to overpay on food. What’s the best area for me? I’ll be going in sept 2024
Any of the areas mentioned in the video will do.
Thanks again Tony,
Such informative videos...
I will be in Madrid for four nights in mid April next year, flying in and after my stay catching a bus to Pamplona from where I will join the Camino Frances pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. I am intending to book the Hotel Agumar (Paseo de la R. Cristina, 7, 28014 Madrid, Spain) and am wondering if you have any feedback about the hotel or its location. I intend to visit the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía but have nothing else planned.
Many thanks
John
Hi again, John! We have actually stayed once at the hotel. It's a comfortable hotel, but it's not a design hotel by any means. Within a walkable distance from Atocha station (and the Reina Sofía museum). All the best!
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Thanks Tony, I presume it is not a top end hotel ('not a design hotel') and appreciate your restraint in commenting, can you suggest one location that may be preferable to the region where the Hotel Agumar is located? I will be catching the bus to Pamplona so proximity to Atocha is not required, Many thanks for your excellent content
Have looked at some in Sol including Chic & Basic Dot, is construction in Puerta de Sol likely to be an issue in April...so many questions :)
@@johnturnbull2146 John, in the video we talk about our preferred locations in Madrid.
@@johnturnbull2146 construction work is due to finish in the first quarter of 2023. Chic & Basic Dot has a brilliant location.
What is your opinion of staying near Atocha/Reina Sofía?
It's not mega central but it's an area we like because of the convenience of staying near the station. The area is also extremely well connected to other parts of Madrid.
I plan to stay at the Hostal Triana, is this hostal a good place to stay or is there any other hostal or place to stay on a budget?
The location is excellent. See other recommendations here: ruclips.net/video/fpFyT5w4dgE/видео.html
What about the area near the Atocha station, 2-3km from the fast train station?
There are two high-speed train stations in Madrid, Atocha is the most important one. Plenty of hotels nearby, not a bad choice if you are planning to use the station often.
can you recommend a AIRBNB for a retired cuople that is safe and close to everything?
We never recommend AirBnb accommodation in Spain for very many reasons. In a nutshell, AirBnb has caused havoc for the lives of local residents in most tourists cities in Spain.
Thank you for this. It was very helpful. I noticed you didnt' mention La Latina. I was considering that neighborhood. How is that in comparison to Chueca and Malasana? Is it as close to the city center as those neighborhoods and what is the vibe?
Hi Vielka, La Latina is not bad at all, doesn't make our top 5 but it's not a bad choice for as long as you don't go too far from the center and stay close to the metro station. Malasaña is hipster central, Chueca is the GLS district of Madrid and La Latina is a bit of a run-down area when you compare them with those two.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Good info. thank you. It was a toss up between Malasana and La Latina but I think I've narrowed it down now. I appreciate the info. 👍🙂
@@vielkameurer7418 that sounds great!
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal So now I'm thinking maybe SOL. 😅 We are also heading to Sevilla, Malaga and Lisbon. You maybe hearing from me again. 🤭☺ Thanks again!
Hola Tony,
next week I'm going to Madrid by car and unfortunately, the hotel does not have parking.
Do you have any tips/suggestions to keep the car safe for 3 days?
Thanks for the awesome video!
Hi Márcia, where exactly is your hotel? Knowing where you are going to be based makes it easier to think of alternatives for your stay. Let us know!
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Hi, thank you very much for your answer!
it is very close to Gran Via :)
@@marciamacieira5979 olá de novo, Márcia. For us it's much easier to help if we know your address. The Gran Via is huge and is served by several metro lines. One address or another along the avenue can make a huge difference. In any case, you will be in the centre of Madrid, where on street free parking is rare (or nearly non-existent). You will probably have to park on a public car park. 24-hour rates tend to be better value than by-the-hour rates. The alternative are "parking disuasorios" on the outskirts of the city. Most of them are free. You can see a list here: www.esmadrid.com/aparcamientos-disuasorios-madrid
