    I’ve wondered this, especially since they often live in the night when it would make no sense for there to be a light somewhere

    They've actually recently figured out why they do this for sure just by taking a slow motion video. Insects use light to orientate themselves; tell which way is up and which way is down. They always oriente themselves with the light above them. When they fly past a lamp they turn their bodies so the light is above them relative to them, and they end up flying around in a circle forever, but from their perspective they're just flying in a straight line and they get really confused. Anton Pretrov made a comprehensive video on it, it's interesting, but also kinda sad.
