council tax could change depending what side of the road you live on but the bin men still come on the same day for said street! To add to the confusion, police forces share counties, i'm under Devon & Cornwall constabulary (2 counties) & i have no clue what became of Avon & Somerset constabulary once they got rid of the county of Avon!
Minor local ordinances DO vary from county to county but national law applies to the whole of England. Historically Durham was a county palatine under a Prince-Bishop so its laws were different until the 1850s.
I think on some British tv show they said the weird banana-ham&hollandaise casserole is from the 50s. But I looked up the picture, it's from something called "McCall's Great American Recipe Card Collection" and that was indeed published in the 70s, maybe the recipe is older.
Shire is pronounced the same as the US state of New Hampshire is, no need to over think it!! In the UK, biscuits are dry, snap when they are fresh and soft when they are stale. A cookie is softer when fresh and can go hard when stale (much the same as a cake sponge!!). So that plate was definitely biscuits to us and not a direct translation to cookie either!! 😁
I believe the sole exception are chocolate chip cookies, I don't recall them being described as chocolate chip biscuits - though I'm sure someone will insist.
14:16 ah yes the 70's were the time of Fanny Craddock and here interesting dinners. In the 70's swinger parties became popular and cookbookswere made for such occasions.......this looks like one of those dishes
Hahaha this was a great video I actually learnt something about my home town ( Leicestershire) and also found the hamcheesebananacasserole hilarious 😂 soooo glad it didn't catch on would not want to try that 😄
Hey ladies I'm a Yorkshire lass I would pronounce it York shur. I live just above the sticky outy bit ( East riding of Yorkshire on the map lol) never accepted and they changed it to Humberside, always put Easy Yorkshire on any correspondence. And I'm from Hull which is in East Yorkshire always was always will.
You should take another look at the ghastly building shown immediately before the Banana/Ham/Custard thingy. This is Trellick Tower in west London, designed by a controversial modernist architect, who also annoyed James Bond author Ian Fleming when he designed some unattractive modernist houses close to Fleming's home. Ian Fleming had his revenge by using the architect's name as the villain in a James Bond novel; the character was repulsively ugly, cheated at cards, cheated at golf, maltreated women and was the world's greediest man. The architect's name was Erno Goldfinger.
I think that's Balfron Tower, in East London (E14), by Blackwall Tunnel, same Architect. The stairways and lift shafts are different. I used to walk past i in the late 60's/early 70's A great place when first built.
Loved this 🤣🤣🤣 London/ now Essex here.... proper down South and we say Shuh as in YorkSHUH .... the 'Shire' is definitely pronounced differently across the country depending on regional accents ... some of my family say 'Sheer' but I'm common 🤣🤣🤣 congratulations on 9K ... thats incredible in 3 months x
I was wondering why I thought Humberstone was still a thing because I go by the sign everyday, and I've just discovered it's a town now instead of a county. I've just learnt this and I've lived down the road to Humberstone my whole life lmao.
I used to work for Royal Mail and understand why the counties changed in that respect for the post.. it was all about how far an address is from the nearest mail centre... For example, I used to live near a town called Burton-upon-Trent which is in the county of Staffordshire, but the closest mail centre is actually Derby, not Stafford, so the county is Staffordshire but the postcode is DE (Derby), We have a village called Ashby-de-la-Zouche which is in the county of Leicestershire, but the nearest mail centre is Derby, (not Leicester) so residents of that village are in the county of Leicestershire with a DE postcode.. It was all about logistics , hence why we don't need to name counties on an address, Royal Mail can get your post to you with the first line of address and postcode only ! ....and also yes county borders were changed again in the 1970s for logistics and local council funding etc etc .. The village I lived in, in Leicestershire, used to be in Derbyshire, but borders changed because noone really wanted our villages and town 😂🤷🏽♀️ The sub-counties are mainly to do with local services, schools, waste collection, etc.. again, a logistics thing.. So I have just moved from North West Leicestershire to Hinkley and Bosworth... it's only a few miles apart, same county of Leicestershire, but our bins and waste collection are different , we have to apply for different council tax, different council offices.. Don't forget, we mostly live on top of each other like sardines here in the UK.. a border is literally a road, a sign, and can be nothing more than that, 1 mile is the difference between counties.. I live in the middle of five counties, right in the very centre of England.. Watching your video and recounting all of this has made my head spin, and I live here 😬😳🤣🤣🤣😲😳😂

Æthelstan - nowadays often spelled Athelstan* is considered the first king of England. A lot of people think it was Alfred the Great, be he was only king of Wessex. It's too long to get into here, but before then, England was divided into at least 4 kingdoms, and before that there were the Romans... *Now the th in Æthestan is pronunced with the unvoiced th (as sin south), but at the timee it was written with þ wich was used for both th sounds (as in the, too). However, given the way the name was given in Old Norse (the language of the Vikings) who had both sounds, written þ and ð respectively, it can be argued that it was a voiced th: Aðalsteinn. In the continental Scandinavian languages today the ð evolved into d, the þ into t (Thor, Þórr, has become Tor) pretty much consistently and systematically.
Congratulations on your 9k well i live in the UK and I'm confused great video girls x look forward to your show's every week keep up the good work hugs sue
We eat sliced bananas with hot custard, and that isn't so bad. We also enjoy sliced banana on fresh crusty buttered bread, not the factory doughy stuff. Good fun videos - both yours and theirs. One thing they got wrong, Rutland is not the smallest county; the Isle of Wight is an island off the South Coast and is a county, and when the tide is in it is slightly smaller than Rutland :-)
Hello lovely friends. If you enjoyed the Mapmen doing our counties, then I recommend you find their video on British place names, it's a hoot! FYI, being "ancient" I can actually remember the 70's. "The first episode of Rainbow" refers to a kids TV show (think Sesame Street, but simpler and cheaper). As to the concoction of bananas, ham and cheese sauce, I have no idea although I have had grilled banana with grilled bacon. It's actually way better than it sounds it should be. Confession time now, Natasha. I started to watch your last post about Christmas and all. but had to shut it off quickly. In the 3 months that I've been watching the pair of you, I have become so fond of you both (yes, I know it's dumb) that I truly hate to see either of you so upset. There is quite enough misery in normal life without dredging it up without reason. Love, hugs, kisses etc.....................................the ancient Englishman.
I love you ladies. You are very open minded. Love you guys and your videos and I am a retired widower who lives in Halifax in West Yorkshire. If ever you are in this area of England you are more than welcome to stay at my place.
I laughed for every 25 minutes of this. One day, when the world is opened up again, you should come to my part of England and fall over laughing at our accent and piles of bricks they call "history"
Hello to you both, that was a very entertaining reaction, and quite funny, I love your sense of humour. You can definitely count on me to be with you on Wednesday for Freddies anniversary.
I live in Northamptonshire, which has, only this year, been split into two Unitary Authorities. It's currently a mess, with the two new authorities still working out how to split the old County-wide services like Libraries and Highways between them. I'm in North Northamptonshire but we had a new delivery of books into our local library which said property of West Northamptonshire on them. The government was forced to make some sort of change when the old County Council went bankrupt. They basically sold everything that wasn't nailed down (and some stuff that was) and built a new, no luxury spared, County Hall, which now stands empty.
Fantastic video! Glad you are enjoying our very long and complicated history! My county (Norfolk ) is part of the ancient kingdom of East Anglia. East Anglia is commonly spoken of - even Universities and TV stations are named after it - but you will not see it on any maps!
The bananas wrapped in ham and covered in hollandaise sauce was from an American 1974 publication; Contemporary Cooking 60 : McCall's Great American Recipe Card Collection
I am so proud of you that your saying the Union Flag! Yes the Union Flag was designated to ships only, but nowadays as the Union Jack is no longer used, the Union Flag /Jack are interchangable
Call me old fashioned, but I still seperate the two. The Union Flag in General and the Union Jack when flown from a ship. Might be my boy scout and naval background.
Counties govern certain aspects of day to day life, such as roadworks cleaning, fire dept ambulances, and local taxes but the main law of the land is the same throughout Britain, Wales has its own Government,as does Scotland and part of Ireland, but they still rely on the Parliament of London England for monies towards larger costly exspenditure! It's complex.😳
Hi girls I'm from Kettering in Northamptonshire which is twinned with Kettering Ohio ..which is a town near Dayton ...family indeed ....you girls are great and much love sent to our lovely cousins x
I live in the totally unimaginative county named Tyne and Wear, they lumped bits of Northumberland and Durham together, all that history from the ancient Northumbria and the land of " Prince Bishop's " co Durham from Roman's and Vikings and some how, we ended up sounding like an Estate Agent's.
Don't forget Alison the ancient counties were never abolished, so tell people you live in and are a proud lady of Northumberland or Durham. I always put the traditional county on the envelope when writing to my folks in Tynemouth, it's not necessary but makes me feel better.
@@peterellis1307 Unfortunately I've lived my life in the country of Tyne and Wear, so I can't really say I can claim either of these amazing counties but my family history is a mixture of both Northumberland and co Durham, that's what happens when your born on Tyneside.

Well 1970's cookbooks were a lawless wasteland, and plantain and prosciutto is sort of acceptable. What the Cheez Whizz was doing on there is a mystery. At 06.40 Um, well, the Union Jack thing is an urban myth. Quite a modern one actually which has a lot to say about social media and none of it good. A Jack was a flag flown by a ship. The Union flag flown from a navy ship was a Union Jack. It fell into common useage and back in 1908 the admiralty told the government of the day, in relation to the appropriateness of the Union flag being called the Union Jack by people, "Meh, whatevs bbz xoxox" (I summarize) and ever since it hasn't mattered until, well, y'know Facebook and that thing of telling people things whether they're true or not. Anyway, love the channel.
Shame they only showed people from Yorkshire who Americans will probably never have seen or heard of. They could have mentioned for example Dame Judi Dench, Sir Patrick Stewart.Sir Ben Kingsley, Charles Laughton. Maybe the Bronte's or William Wilberforce. We Yorkshire people don't really care what the authorities do with the map because as far as we are concerned the only map that counts is the first one they showed. In Yorkshire we also have Yorkshire Day on August 1st.

To add to the confusion, police forces share counties, i'm under Devon & Cornwall constabulary (2 counties) & i have no clue what became of Avon & Somerset constabulary once they got rid of the county of Avon!
I know there is an ad at the end of most mapmen vids, but they are just as funny as the main part. Congrats on 9.08K subs.
Another fun video I love love love your chemistry together. Congrats on 9k 👏
We all know the best thing to come out of Yorkshire is the road to Lancashire...🌹
it'd be great if you reacted to The War of the Roses :) 🤔
Ah I love jay foreman videos good choice. And its always a treat when you two upload 😊 Hope you're both doing well and grats on 9k subs
Thanks so much Michael! We stayed up all night getting this video made, so just getting ready to sleep!
a Yorkshire man from South Yorkshire here. i find your reaction to all this hilarious
The county I live in, in Wales, was spilt-up into smaller counties in the 1990s but people still use the old county name on addresses.
lemme guess... Glamorgan?
@@AndrewHalliwell One of the many :-)
North or South Wales is another divide 😏
Where I live is now RCT (Rhondda Cynon Taf) but most people still say Mid Glamorgan.
@@adventussaxonum448 I know, it is mad really. Mid Glamorgan has not existed for about 26 years. May as well write "Silures" on an envelope.
So glad this suggestion worked out so well! Really love your reaction - especially to the banana-ham-cheese casserole!
Minor local ordinances DO vary from county to county but national law applies to the whole of England.
Historically Durham was a county palatine under a Prince-Bishop so its laws were different until the 1850s.
You two ladies are awesome! I love you and your videos! Shout to the boys for a great video!
Provision of local services vary considerably from county to county, as do policing standards, etc
I’m from Cornwall, which is basically the same in all county maps because of our history and position in the far south west of the U.K. :)

Congrats on 9k , I was subscriber no 6 .I,m proud of you both , love your enthusiasm to learn , keep having fun .x.
That was custard?
It looked to me like sausage (photoshopped into bananas), ham/bacon, with melted cheese on top.
Jago Hazzard has a great video on the building (and others of that type)
I think that's Balfron Tower, in East London (E14), by Blackwall Tunnel, same Architect. The stairways and lift shafts are different. I used to walk past i in the late 60's/early 70's
A great place when first built.

I was wondering why I thought Humberstone was still a thing because I go by the sign everyday, and I've just discovered it's a town now instead of a county. I've just learnt this and I've lived down the road to Humberstone my whole life lmao.
Humberside was the county - not Humberstone (a suburb of Leicester, no where near the Humber).
@@wessexdruid5290 oh I'm getting confused with all the humber malarkey sorry
@@wessexdruid5290 meant humberside
I’m from Lincolnshire. It was a big deal when some of our county was taken away for Humberside.
I used to work for Royal Mail and understand why the counties changed in that respect for the post.. it was all about how far an address is from the nearest mail centre...
For example, I used to live near a town called Burton-upon-Trent which is in the county of Staffordshire, but the closest mail centre is actually Derby, not Stafford, so the county is Staffordshire but the postcode is DE (Derby),
We have a village called Ashby-de-la-Zouche which is in the county of Leicestershire, but the nearest mail centre is Derby, (not Leicester) so residents of that village are in the county of Leicestershire with a DE postcode..
It was all about logistics , hence why we don't need to name counties on an address, Royal Mail can get your post to you with the first line of address and postcode only !
....and also yes county borders were changed again in the 1970s for logistics and local council funding etc etc .. The village I lived in, in Leicestershire, used to be in Derbyshire, but borders changed because noone really wanted our villages and town 😂🤷🏽♀️
The sub-counties are mainly to do with local services, schools, waste collection, etc.. again, a logistics thing..
Watching your video and recounting all of this has made my head spin, and I live here 😬😳🤣🤣🤣😲😳😂
There is a Royal Mail centre by Stoke on Trent train station

You have just stumbled upon 2 of the funniest and wittiest and cleverest Guys out there with over 1 Million Subscribers which they have for a very good reason.
Their videos about The London Boroughs ( all 32 of them unlike the 5 Boroughs in New York ) is funny and informative but there are so many Jay Foreman videos especially when he teams with Mark and forms "Map Men". You weren't to know but after the advert, Jay sings a song that he created involving all the County names...:)

Never seen that food item in my life and I grew up in the 1970s. 😂
Whatever it is, I hope it was very quickly detonated in a controlled explosion. What worries me is that the "cheese" looks like custard to me.

We eat sliced bananas with hot custard, and that isn't so bad. We also enjoy sliced banana on fresh crusty buttered bread, not the factory doughy stuff. You ladies will get on here in the UK just fine. You're getting the hang of our humour. You laugh at the ridiculous, and we've got lots of that over here. It's what we are.
It'd be fine washed down with Dr Pepper
Bananas & custard is amazing!

Love bananas and custard, love banana sandwich. Yum. Dad's favourite was bananas sliced up in milk with a bit of sugar sprinkled on ,leave to stand awhile to really flavour the milk.😃
Good fun videos - both yours and theirs. One thing they got wrong, Rutland is not the smallest county; the Isle of Wight is an island off the South Coast and is a county, and when the tide is in it is slightly smaller than Rutland :-)
A Beautiful "Olde Worlde" place that I visited in 1968,1972,1976 and 2017 and I am glad to say it hasn;t changed much :)

What the heck was that banana thing!? Thank god, whatever it is, was left in the 70s 🤣🤣
Hello lovely friends. If you enjoyed the Mapmen doing our counties, then I recommend you find their video on British place names, it's a hoot! FYI, being
"ancient" I can actually remember the 70's. "The first episode of Rainbow" refers to a kids TV show (think Sesame Street, but simpler and cheaper). As to
the concoction of bananas, ham and cheese sauce, I have no idea although I have had grilled banana with grilled bacon. It's actually way better than it
sounds it should be. Confession time now, Natasha. I started to watch your last post about Christmas and all. but had to shut it off quickly. In the 3

There is quite enough misery in normal life without dredging it up without reason. Love, hugs, kisses etc.....................................the ancient Englishman.

People outside Yorkshire do care what county they are from, people are proud of where they are from.
True, it's just that most people outside Yorkshire don't feel contractually obliged to relentlessly bang on about it.

Yay for West Midlands
The bananas wrapped in ham and covered in hollandaise sauce was from an American 1974 publication; Contemporary Cooking 60 : McCall's Great American Recipe Card Collection
I am so proud of you that your saying the Union Flag!
Yes the Union Flag was designated to ships only, but nowadays as the Union Jack is no longer used, the Union Flag /Jack are interchangable
Call me old fashioned, but I still seperate the two. The Union Flag in General and the Union Jack when flown from a ship. Might be my boy scout and naval background.
Good morning natasha and Debbie, looking great 👍
Counties govern certain aspects of day to day life, such as roadworks cleaning, fire dept ambulances, and local taxes but the main law of the land is the same throughout Britain, Wales has its own Government,as does Scotland and part of Ireland, but they still rely on the Parliament of London England for monies towards larger costly exspenditure!
@@peterellis1307 Unfortunately I've lived my life in the country of Tyne and Wear, so I can't really say I can claim either of these amazing counties but my family history is a mixture of both Northumberland and co Durham, that's what happens when your born on Tyneside.
still has more character than... West Midlands!
@@niallrussell7184 Think we both got jipped on our countries names. Funnily enough our Police Force is Northumbria Police, yet the Fire Brigade is Tyne & Wear, just to confuse us.

Love you guys + I'm learning so much (and I live here)
Shame they only showed people from Yorkshire who Americans will probably never have seen or heard of.
Jay Foreman is a RUclips legend and the Map Men videos are brilliantly informative and entertaining. Almost as entertaining as their in video adverts which are a must watch!
