I am Lebanese and recently married an Nigerian, and that was a battle with my family, and yes middle eastern families can be ignorant. So I stood against it and said no there is no such thing as racism in Islam. Bilal May Allah be pleased with him was a black slave who was one of the first to become Muslim and he was given the honour of calling the prayer not an Arab, yes image the beauty of him calling all the Arabs and Muslim to prayer. MashAllah.

as a black Somalian it really did hurt seeing those comments. I ask myself everyday why being black is associated with ugliness. why does it matter what my skin colour is?? I really thought the Muslim community would be somewhat different to mainstream society but I guess I was wrong. being of a religion with so many different ethnicities and backgrounds I would expect we were more open minded but I guess not

how naive people really could be to think that religion supercedes everything rather its race that does.Religion is part and parcel of everything that went wrong in this world whether its colonization where missionaries sent first or slave trade in both the east by arabs and west by europeans. You have to dig into history to find out what role religion played in wars, slave trade, colonization etc. any black who thinks cos they muslim or christian or jewish and will be treated equally as such is downright stupid and deserve to be treated differently.why blind yourself from whats been true for millenia.you believe in what eva religion but being black and debating this today on why your sect treats you differently says a lot about your lack of awareness and/or self denial.and am not saying every black cares about what others think of him/her nor that everyone else in otha races is racist.

Why did you expect them to be different? Humans are humans. We are corrupt. You can interpret any text about Master and Servant in Quran and Hadiths to mean developed being enslaving those who are underdeveloped and thereby meant for servitude. This is human nature, not even Buddhists (the so called most peaceful people) are pure.

I am an African American muslim, and I am still stunned when I pass some middle eastern or Indian muslims who will make full eye contact, and never bother to smile or offer a Salam. This is Sunna, being an American from this generation, we are taught to smile or say hello to anyone we pass and make eye contact with. It just dawned on me recently that these "'muslims," were actually typical racists. Most American muslims try to do what the Quran says, and judge people by their actions, we know to reject any cultural practices that oppose Islam. I met have a friend from Pakistan, who said she only really practiced her culture back home, and it was meeting all different types of muslims here in the U.S. that really taught her true Islam. Habiba, you'd be stunning with purple stripes, those commenters are racists who actually need to sit an read the Quran, not learn it from some old uncle.

They asked why? i said "because im black". It shouldnt have to be that way. You shouldnt feel as if youre too black to be embraced by your muslim brothers and sisters. its hard to find a masjid where you don't get stared at like you dont belong. I completely agree with you, Arabs are racist! I grew up in the Middle East and I know views on certain issues were so backwards and there is so much ego! Everyone is better than everyone else and it makes them feel good about themselves to look down on others. Growing up I was always a lot paler compared to other girls at school. I was constantly getting comments like "You're so lucky, I really envy you!" as if the skin tone I was born with is an accomplishment I should be proud of! There's usually a lot of racism within the countries themselves, if you're not from the same city or the same religious sect then you're not good enough! To be completely honest, I don't think the get the concept of racism and that's why they don't think it's wrong to comment on skin colour or ethnicity.

Somalis have the same issue, some of them discriminate the dark skin Somalis and praise the light skinned ones which is really sad cause in a family you could have some light skinned and some dark skin and yo relatives or even sometimes your own siblings call you by your complexion , (Cadeey) meaning light skinned and madow (dark skinned)

Nasrim Iman You nailed. We Somalis are one the most racist people yet we point fingers at others and call them racist. We need to fix our own backyard and eradicate racism within own community before we call others out for being racist. Somalis call other blacks derogatory terms like Adoon(slave), Jareer (kinky hair) which demonstrates Somalis are apparently more superior because of their soft hair. Wallahi our community is so racist. Thanks for mentioning these points.

I'm really glad you addressed this topic, it's something that needs to be recognized and fixed within the Arab community. I live in California where it is constantly hot, and naturally if I go out in the summer for an hour I'm two shades darker. Whenever this happens my mother gets worried and during the winter she will always compliment me because of how "white" I look. She did immigrate from Yemen when she was younger with my siblings, but regardless I told her to never compliment me with that again, because I honestly don't care what color I am (I don't want any bad tan lines though haha if I could get dark all over my body that would be great actually). Not to mention the fact that many of the men within my family are extremely dark, but I guess it's "acceptable" for them? ALSO I think the way that Arabs call African people "Abeed" instead of "Sood" is also very disrespectful. We are all Abeed to Allah, and that's about it.

I'm glad you made this video. It feels good to know that there are people out there who care. I really look up to you. I'm a Muslima and My parents are from Togo a land next to Ghana. And I used to go to weekend school for quran and Arab lessons where the majority of the children were Morocan/Arab, in fact I was the only black girl there. I got it so bad, I was called names by these kids they made me believe that my dark skin was ugly. It even got to a point where I would ask my parents why I'm not just white, because I felt like things would be so much easier when I was just white. The teachers didn't do anything and one of my teachers once called dark people disguisting and then I started crying the only thing he said was that I was the only one that wasn't disguisting. This whole experience made me not want to learn about the quran anymore. I didn't want to go to weekendschool anymore because I knew I would be bullied again. Sometimes they even would get physical and some random kid would beat me. why? because I'm black. This whole experience made me so depressed. My parents wouldn't let me not go to these classes because they found it important to study the quran. I was so confused because the quran says that you should respect and care for each other no matter what skin complexion you are and yet I wasn't accepted. I never speak about this but when I do I get filled with tears in my eyes. To this day it stil hurts. I was between the age of 8-13 when this happened it kept going on for 4 years I think, then I decided to stop the classes because I couldn't handle it anymore. I'm seventeen now. Thank you for making this video.

Thanks for making this video. I'm Sudanese and you will not believe the amount of racism that I hear directed towards me, my people and other black people from Arabs. I wholeheartedly believe that Arabs are some of the most racist people on the planet. I already see some people in the comments justifying this behaviour, as expected. May Allah bless you Habiba, keep doing you.

I am Nigerian and a non-muslim, and I applaud your courage and forthrightness in the face of these unbelievable ills of the societies in which we find ourselves. Sometimes, it makes me lose hope in entirety and wonder if the whole world shouldn't just be erased and a 'reset' button hit. i dont know why some arabs disagree with the video 😕 it's not like she made up a story , its what happens everyday to black poeple who live in the middle east 😣 and IT NEEDS TO STOP ✋.
as an african who lives in the middle east sometimes my friends take a pic with me and put it as their profile pic on fb then i see a lot of comments like "the pic is shinning from the left side" (if i am standing on the left side) 😑 , sometimes when i walk down the streets i see a lot of children calling me chocolate (in the other hand i lived in europe few years i have never witnessed something like that???), and a lot of stuff like that.
anyway the reason that she talked about this subject is not to make poeple hate arabs (in fact she shows that she's proud 😏 to be arabic in other videos) she only wants to make arabs better poeple and i hope she succees 😃 because there are a lot of poeple all over the who dont know the difference between arabs and muslims , so it will affect islam 😢.
in the end i would like to say
" الحمد لله أني عرفت الإسلام قبل أن أعرف المسلمين" 😅
thank you habiba it really meant a lot that an arabic girl talked about this issue 👏

Racism in the Muslim community is such a big issue. Especially in the arab and asian communities. I'll just casually be scrolling through Twitter and see an arab taking about black people using th term "3abeed" like its nothing. It's so sad how Islam is a religion where every race and everyones differences is all equal in Allah's eyes. And we are learned this in the Quran but society and culture has made it that the darker your skin, the less attractive, less intelligent, and less worthy you are. Like you sad on your instagram post this little run in with the racism you got because of your tan is NOTHING compared to us who were born and will forever have black skin. You still will never completely understand what it is like to BE black in society. So, I appreciate the fact that you took this chance to speak up about an issue that has been going on since forever. Hopefully these racists can learn a lesson.

I feel like apologizing on behalf of my people.. Those comments you got were truly disgusting and UN-islamic. How did it become a part of the middle eastern culture, or whatever you want to call it, to be so racist towards blacks? The prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, himself, picked out Bilal Ibn Rabah (Radiya Allahu 3anhu). Bilal, who used to be a black slave, hand-picked by the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him to be the first muazzin and to later on become one of his loyal companions! Subhana-Llah... our beloved prophet peace be upon him, did indeed cry for this ummah out of concern.
Sorry, I just felt like sharing this beautiful, yet essential feature of Islam that this ummah needs to understand- because we have surely forgotten it.
And thank you so much for the video Habiba, it was super insightful. Using the voice that you have on social media, to promote equality and respect is really refreshing.

+Eternal Apostate Did I ever deny that Arabs enslaved Africans? No.
If you took your time to read my comment, and if you were able to extract the core message from it- you would realize that I was refering to islam. Whether some Arabs call black people "Abeed" or whether some White people call Arab people "terrorists"- You have no right to generalize.
We're all angry and hurt over the torture and murder the black people went through in the past, and the fact that racial discrimination still takes place is even worse.
      Thank you for your comment.

*sigh* This actually makes me sad but.. You didn't seem to understand it the first time, so let me repeat myself. Where in my comments do you find me not acknowledging the genocide commited towards Blacks??
I'm acknowledging it and I'm condemning any kind of genocide towards ANY race.
How do you know we don't address these issues in our mosques?
I've been to several mosques who explicitly condemn ALL of the above mentioned injustice.
20-something Muslim scholars have written a fatwa condemning ISIS and their acts!
And that's just if we were to look at written statements, let alone what is being said by other scholars.
I sincerely hope you'll have a good day, and that you'll try to be a bit more open-minded. We're not enemies.

Habibaaa thank you for this, I relate to this soooo much! I'm so glad you addressed this issue of racism in Islam because it became such a tabo topic that almost no one brings up. I'm Sudanese and tbh there is so much racism towards us in the Arab community, we are seen too dark to be Arab which I think is beyond ridiculous, this 'lighter skin is more beautiful' ideology has become a norm now as people are trying to fit in with the ideal Arab image they have made for themselves and I just don't get how we as Muslims can accept having this mentality. We come in all colours and Islam is what unites us and makes us one Ummah but unfortunately people have started differentiating on stupid, meaningless things like this. I don't understand how the degree of melanin in my skin determines my beauty. I loved the video so much! And I makes me really happy someone is taking the time to acknowledge the problem, you're such an inspiration Habiba!

It's 2015 the fact that we think (Arabs mainly, don't even get me started worth South Asia) light skin is something to be proud of and puts you in a higher position really sickens me to my stomach. I'm From yemen which is a real melting pot of a nation we can range from fair skin and green eyes to dark skin and black hair, people will come up to me with all sorts of comments "your too dark to be Yemeni" "your too light to be Yemeni" since when did a nation come with a shades chart. I'm tired of it who cares, when we're in our graves Allah isn't going to ask us what skin tone we left this world in, is he? Has history taught us nothing? Shackling innocent lives underground and breaking families apart to be sold to Wealthy European countries just because of the color of their skin. Wallah I'm so over this. And for those Arabs who degrade blacks, bilal (RA) was a dark skinned Ethiopian slave and such a prominent figure in the religion of Islam. Ufffff sorry for the essay

+Lena Arabena ISlam is the best religion? Even though those Arabs used the Quran to enslave Millions of Black Africans. Muhammad owned slaves. Even today Arabs refer to Blacks as Abeed a legacy of the Arab slave trade.
Islam is an intrinsically Arab religion, where you have to pray in Arabic, have Arab names, read the Quran in Arabic, revere and venerate an Arab prophet and figures, and make pilgrimage to a Pagan Arab ritual and make Arabs even more rich.
I am a Pakistani former Muslim it's time for these non-Arabs to wake up they don't know shit about Islam. They speak of European colonialism and imperialism but what about Arab imperialism in North Africa, spain, India, etc..

Thank you for addressing this problem. As a makeup artist, I have to just accept the clients request to be 'fairer'. They'd be dark skinned with no imperfections but still want a tonne of makeup on to be light skinned. I hate it. It's awful that darker skin tones is still looked down upon. The Arab/Asian community has been whitewashed by these terrible standards. I know the Indian fashion industry has been pushing for darker skin toned models on the runway, but as long as we have brand like 'fair and lovely' and skin bleaching products - it's still pushes the ideology that being light skinned is more beautiful.

and in the southern region of my country where I'm originally from, the girls that don't
have a lighter skin are considered ugly. I used to have a lighter skin but after getting into
university and being exposed to the sun most of the time my skin color has changed
and the fact that my mother forces me to put more make up in ceremonies and family gatherings so
that I look lighter is really depressing.
I've never felt beautiful and myself esteem has become very low
I'm getting married soon to a man who is not Saudi and has a darker skin than mine

When you addressed this on your snapchat, I didn't think it was going to be such a vulgar matter as you didn't address what had been said. But I'm so glad you made this video, this also happens in some of our Asian culture. Its quite sad really that people are brought up believing that lighter is 'better' or wanting to look lighter. I have a medium colour skin tone and I know so many girls darker then me to be jealous of my skin colour (not saying I have a perfect colour skin tone) and I always would ask why?? It was always coming from one culture which I wont mention and they would tell me lighter is nicer. Wish everyone would understand we were cut from the same cloth, Allah made us all beautiful and there shouldn't be judgement. 2015 or 1915 don't think some people will change but I really do hope this 'stereotype' breaks. Well done on the video habiba x

Habiba you are stunning mashaAllah. You're right, beauty is skin deep and I don't believe skin colour determines beauty! The problem with Us, eastern people, is that we haven't released the shackles of colonialism where the white man was the master and we were slaves. Sad really! I have had the same in Arab countries where as soon as I tell them what race/culture I belong to I get the response "No you can't be, but you're beautiful" and they expect me to take that as a compliment. You'll find a lot of Muslims without Islam, hence why so many of our brothers and sisters are suffering. May Allah guide us all xxx

Wow this is insane. I'm filipino and Philippines is a tropical and a very very hot country so when I use to live there, I was much much darker. I was also not a muslim back then and did not cover and was out in the sun and by the beach all the time so my skin was very tanned. I moved to New Zealand which is a much much colder climate and even when the sun is out it is still cold. After converting and wearing the hijab, I naturally got lighter because the sun would not reach my skin because it was covered. I didn't intentionally and unnaturally get lighter just like how Habiba did not get intentionally and unnaturally darker. People are so uneducated and ridiculous. I pray that Allah will make them realize the error in their ways because the last thing we want is us muslims tearing our own people apart when so many out there are already adamant to make muslims look terrible.

I follow you on instagram and i was kinda hurt when i saw the comments, living in the middle east i can totally agree with the fact that most people here are extremely racist and it makes me sick in my stomach. I feel like nothing is going to change but let's just hope that racism dies. Also, i would appreciate it if you make a video about being a Muslim girl in RUclips because I'm thinking about making videos but I'm kinda scared tbh..love you 😊

I am so glad that you spoke about this topic Habiba. I subscribed to you a while back by just watching random RUclips videos, I watched one of your videos and was immediately captivated by your personality. although I do not know you personally, your beauty shows from within and through your videos. I am not Muslim but as a black woman of Christian faith, I can absolutely connect with this video. Colorism is rooted in every race and hypocrisy is also rooted in every religion, unfortunately. I will not excuse those ignorant people but a lot of their ignorance is influenced from European imperialism, people see western countries as the promise land without realizing that most developed countries were built on racism, mass killings, assimilation and oppression. I see Colorism everywhere, young black girls thinking that they are ugly because of the darkness of their skin, the majority of celebrities that are highly advertised are of light complexion so imagine the psychological message that is being sent. People are use to only seeing Caucasians on television to the point where they reject seeing even their own race on television. The sad part is that I've heard ignorant remarks being made from people of darker complexion which is a direct reflection of how they feel about themselves. I see so many people use the words of our creator to do evil, can you believe that slaves were forced to know about the teaching of Christianity, how sickening to use the teachings of God yet go against his main purpose which is to love your neighbors, regardless of if they look like you or have the same beliefs as you. The ironic thing is, while people of color are discriminating against each other, people of European descent are mimicking our culture and appearance, from tanning their skin to even appropriating our culture; the same culture that we get negatively stereotyped for. It's time to break way from self hatred, the discrimination and hatred from others is already strong so why create hatred and racism in our own community. And I'm also fed up with people using their 'upbringing' to excuse their ignorance, you are an individual created with a mind and body so complex, science can not fully explain, stop being easily influenced by others, if you come from an ignorant family understand that you are of a new generation and end that cycle of ignorance from past generations.
I have always had little faith in humanity but Habiba you have honestly brought hope to my heart, we need more and more people with your mentality to end this cruel cycle of racism in our society. I hope you make more videos like this because you do have the power to influence, so many people look up to you. I wish you many more blessings and love :)

This is such a great video Habiba! I was also really annoyed by those comments. The saddest thing is that these are muslims who are commenting. We as an ummah we must work together and support each other instead of hating because of such banal reasons. Who cares about skin colour? The first man to give the call for prayer was black. Our prophet saw preached on how the skin colour and nationality did't matter. We must take him as an example. There is enough media bashing against muslims (esp. Muslim women) we shouldn't be a part of it!

Being of a darker race I know exactly what you're talking about. Racism in this day and age is not acceptable, it still exists and is so sickening to witness. The fact people judge on skin colour, not soul.. not personality but what is on the outside isn't right. Being societies idea of pretty will get you nowhere later and in the afterlife! InshaAllah things change soon I hope the people contributing to this problem are guided by Allah and find the right path.

Thanks sooo much for talking about this topic... you seriously hit the nail on the head. For a while I seriously lost hope in the arab and middle eastern communities when it comes to racism. Racism has no place in Islam, but it's so prevalent among certain muslims. This type of ignorance needs to stop. I don't get why people find it their right to talk bad about someone's skin color or the way someone looks when we don't have a choice in that matter. It's not like you chose your skin color or earned it or something. If you are insulting someone's skin color, you're essentially criticizing the creation of Allah (sw). Some people talk as if black equates ugly and fair automatically equates beauty. As if it's just a known universal fact or something and whenever I've disagreed about this, I was the one who was looked at as weird. It's seriously the 21'st century, some people need to get with the times and wake up. Black is beautiful, brown is beautiful, fair is beautiful, all shades are beautiful. Just imagine if we were all the same color, it would be boring.

I currently live in the USA but have lived in the UAE before and while living there I have experienced the most anti-blackness/racism/colorism ever. Being dark in the Arab world is so frowned upon for some strange reason and is seen as ugly and I know for sure that all Sudanese/Somali people have been told their skin is "too dark", and so? Black skin is so beautiful, its crazy that its not celebrated like white skin. Racism is so institutionalized in the Arab world, unlearning the theme of black inferiority and white superiority must be done for equal opportunities in the middle east and I'm so happy this video was made, Thank you Habiba!
