This early plunderphonics style from lopatin and a few other artists was always the best version of vaporwave. There is an obscure enigmatic quality to it that just isn't in the stuff it ended up inspiring.

so i did some snooping around, this song is from an album/audio-visual experiment called memory vague by a man named Oneohtrix Point Never who released the album as a limited edition DVD-R and wanted to see what effects the songs would have on it's listeners. this was in june 1st, 2009, aka before vaporwave was a thing. Imagine, you make an experimental song for no reason other than for the fun of it, and suddenly people like this style so much that it became a whole genre.
Btw, eneohtrix point never invented vaporwave, he went by the name chuckperson and released eccojams (the first vaporwave album) he also has done the soundtrack for good time and uncut gems (great films), really cool guy and really cool music

@@SeanStrife Serious question: why the late 90s? The graphics are from '84 and the sample is from '86. I was born in '78, and this absolutely screams 80s.
This reminds me of those late saturday nights when my brother and I would sleepover at my cousin's house or vice versa. We would have pizza and play n64 or ps2 (this was back in like 1999 to the early 2000s) but eventually would try to stay up and watch toonami to adult swim (when they play anime in saturdays) or we would occasionally browse through channels like VH1, Comedy Central, Nick at Nite, and Mtv to see what's on. Those random shows and old Adult Swim bumpers and commercials of restaurants like mcdonalds or movies out at the time combined with the cold breeze from the slightly open window in my cousin's room really felt nice. Now as an adult in my late 20s with responsibilities, there is good merits as an adult but damn it I would give anything to relive at least one more sleepover night in the early 2000s again when I didn't have a care in the world and just enjoyed being a kid. Long post sorry lol but to all the kids here, please enjoy your youth and never take it for granted and create memories that will last a life time, don't rush to grow up.
i've experienced that feeling way too many times. i don't like joining group chats anymore specifically because of that empty, forelorn feeling i get when there hasn't been a message in days.
Im so glad i found this video. It might just be in my mind forever. Summer of '23 i finally got my first job (after getting rejected many times) and i remember those long shifts and the friends i made there that i probably wont ever speak to again, but after this one shift our ac had broken in my house so my sister had lent my Mom a window ac unit, so my brother, my Mom and I all slept downstairs. And that night finding this video, felt like every given second of that night spent watching old cartoons and random free channels while everyone else was dead asleep was special, like that feeling would never be found again.
Glad the algorithm brought me here today. 2009 was a very memorable time for me, whether you're reading this in the past or the future or days between. hello from 2024 ... how I miss 09' era.🤩 - R7

I didn’t realize until recently that the same creator of this video is the same person who runs Oneothrix Point Never. He truly one of most important musicians of the 21th century so far. He basically started Vaporwave and not mentioning he’s other albums like Replica is the best plunder-phonics album created.
"Oneohtrix" Point Never. You know, like a radio station. "106.7". One Oh Six Point Seven. One Oh Trix Point Never. Oneohtrix Point Never. Get it? He took the name from a station in Boston, but made it surreal, something you can't actually dial to except in a dream or beyond the void.
The aesthetic, sound and mix of this is so much like early vaporwave that you could say this is ahead of its time but it by nature it sounds so retro that you could say this is a great throwback loop. 2009 just seems like a very out of place date for this to have been released.
In essence, eccojams and far side virtual are what started the whole vaporwave thing. It's only out of place because it was the first vaporwave to exist (and also the best)
When I was 6/7/8 years old I used to love going to the dentist. I would have to go frequently because SUGAR. My dentist loved to crank the gas up to make his patients shut up and stop squirming, and I would get him to crank it up even more by complaining that it wasn't working. A seven year old brain on that much Nitrous Oxide produces interesting effects. I remember having a few out-of-body type experiences. The pop hits playing through the single tinny speaker in the ceiling created these spinning 80s/90s pop music auditory hallucinations: an experience that can only be described as being INSIDE of a Phil Collins song. Then always on the way home, waiting for the novocaine to wear off, I'd ineffectively attempt to eat a Wendy's chocolate Frosty (because we got Wendy's coupons in our dental hygiene goody bags). AMERICA
Chris Jernigan The other day I got a root canal. They started playing chill out lounge and I loved it, but a few minutes later they started playing the latest top 40 hits and it was a letdown.
Went to the dentist high once and got nitrous. I was unaware of the amazing combination of marijuana and nitrous. They ended up having to put the mouthpiece in to hold my mouth open because I couldn't

Lady in Red was playing in my doctor's office this morning. I wasn't listening, but when I heard him sing "there's nobody here" it shot a bolt through my spine and instantly brought me back here in my head. There's powerful energy in this video.
It's so odd when you hear a sample in its original form just randomly.
My parents love Lady in Red and play it from time to time
when that happens, no matter what i'm doing, i stop and wait for "There's nobody here" part
it feels like entire heavenly light put in this video, all at once surrounds me.
My dad played that song in his car so im watching this right now
It also plays in American Psycho, with the first verse of this line
It just happened to me

This early plunderphonics style from lopatin and a few other artists was always the best version of vaporwave. There is an obscure enigmatic quality to it that just isn't in the stuff it ended up inspiring.

If you’re a fan of vaporwave, this is literally stop #1 on your journey. I’ve never heard anything like it.
I've been traditionally coming back to this video every few months or so and it feels like a checkpoint every time
so i did some snooping around, this song is from an album/audio-visual experiment called memory vague by a man named Oneohtrix Point Never who released the album as a limited edition DVD-R and wanted to see what effects the songs would have on it's listeners. this was in june 1st, 2009, aka before vaporwave was a thing.
Imagine, you make an experimental song for no reason other than for the fun of it, and suddenly people like this style so much that it became a whole genre.
Well that’s cool

This is exactly what staying up too late as a 5 year old in the late 90's felt like.
Shit being a kid at ANY age in the late 90s and staying up too late is what this feels like.
@@SeanStrife Serious question: why the late 90s? The graphics are from '84 and the sample is from '86. I was born in '78, and this absolutely screams 80s.
idk how you described that so accurately
