  • Each November, Americans celebrate a mythical version of U.S. history. Thanksgiving Day's portrayal of the experience of Native Americans under the boot of settler-colonialism is one of the Empire's most cherished falsehoods.
    To hear about the true story of native peoples' plight - from genocide to reeducation - Abby Martin interviews Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, renowned indigenous scholar and activist, about her most recent book "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States." multimedia.tele...

    I can remember as a younger man watching a congressional hearing on the topic of violence in gaming. In specific they talked about the game Mortal Kombat how gruesome, brutal and inhumane the fatalities were. When I hear and read Roxanne’s work and study. I’m horrified of the moral high ground the US has brainwashed and killed it’s way to. The depictions of violence shown in MK are fabricated and then played out between fictional characters. What Roxanne is describing ACTUALLY happened amongst men and is the foundation of this country, truly we live in the age of spin and denial.

    Interesting and sad facts.The British practiced their terrorism first in Ireland - scalping or decapitation. The scalping and decapitation was practiced on large scale by the British and then the Americans. Redskins concept comes from that. The Brits/ American even had a business model for this terrorism. Settlers were given money for scalping any native Americans - no matter if children, women, or men. In the US's history classes we are not taught about this practice. Great series, thanks Abbie.

      May I ask if you care to know the fact that the Second Amendment in the USA was historically put in place in American Constitution, mainly to encourage slaughtering indigenous Native American people, in order to take over their homeland. Moreover, the hidden mega genocide of indigenous Native Americans, and their population in Continents of America 500 yrs ago was around 15 millions, while European population in Europe was around 25 millions.Today, Native Americans population at 15 million, while European population, in Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering 'ONE BILLION'! For instance, 200 years ago here in the USA, around 3 million Germans came, and now there are 65 millions German-Americans; while 150 years ago, around 2 millions Irish came, and now there are 45 million Irish-Americans. While 500 years ago there were estimated to be 5 to 6 millions indigenous Native Americans in the USA, before Christopher Columbus arrived, today there are only around 2 million indigenous Native Americans survived.
      Imagine this scenario, if Native American people cross the Atlantic, invade and Colonize Europe, and slaughter most Europeans, and put the remaining populations in tiny reservations, for 500 long years. How would Europeans feel about it? Think about it. All they need is their beloved motherlands back, the lands that their ancestors forebears had lived through thick and thin, endured through hardships and all for generations. Besides, indigenous Native Americans in Colonized lands of Anglo British, Spaniard and others are more of the same. Kill the indigenous Natives and whoever is left, marginalize them and create artificial poverty, once that poverty becomes crime and drinking, the media points to the poor and blames them to continue to stigmatize the 'other' community, scumbags, etc. Amazing fact that Indigenous Natives had built such great civilizations as Mayan, Inca and Aztec without outside help, and all from the scratch, and all on their own, since they had been cut off from the rest of the world for ten of thousand of years. In other words, they actually are great and proud people.
      Imagine what it would be like today if Native Americans had possessed some sort of nuclear weapons to defend themselves, and their beloved motherlands from invaders Colonizers? The answer is they would still have their own beloved motherlands, plus their population comparable to that of European population.
      In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners Native American people. Remember, notorious global cardinal crimes the West has committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is this another notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask?

      We had nothing to do with what people of that time did and most of us find genocide disgusting. The Caucasian race is a wide variety of nationalities, white people were victims just as much as minorities literally 75 years ago 18 million whites were murdered by the nazis in Europe and 20 million Russians were starved by Stalin. And most of Eastern Europe was oppressed because of the ussr’s evil communism. Are you just gonna ignore that?
      stop blaming an entire group of people just because they happen to be white. It’s asshole individuals who committed these atrocities not the entire white race

    European cultures are not the standard for human value. It pisses me off to hear the reach for validation of native way of life by drawing on similarity to europe's agriculture, cities or various other aspects. If people live in trees like birds it is a valuable way of life every bit as valid as living in cities and in terms of sustainibility much more valid.

      @penyarol83 2 года назад

      This! This is exactly what I was going to comment. It surprised me to hear her talk about the agriculture & civilization in the beginning of the video as if it was a good thing. Its news to me to hear about the agriculture existing in the Eastern part of the U.S., although I’d heard that there were civilizations there. As I see it, the more “civilized” a culture is, the more toxic, unequal, slavery-based and warlike it is. There is an article by Peter Gray in Psychology Today called “How Hunter-Gatherers Maintained Their Egalitarian Ways.” He explains that true hunter-gatherers have consistently been found to be/have been peaceful, non-hierarchical, and not warlike. But any group that moved to agriculture became more violent and I assume less sustainable too. I feel the fundamental mistake is viewing “civilization” and agriculture as a good thing. To me, they represent cancer-the destruction of social health and the Earth.
      I was wondering if anyone thought the same. Thank you for your comment!

    The Creator always saves a remnant of his people that's why they weren't all killed. The author of the Wizard of Oz wrote an editorial though and proposed just that, killing every last Indian with hid reasoning; they won't ever forget what we did to them and they will tell their children and pass it along and it will follow us forever. And the white people didn't sneak up on the Native people they knew they were coming, the Wasichu. The Pilgrims claimed Manifest Destiny, the Bible said it a different way, and behold a pale horse and his rider was death and hell followed with him. You don't believe it's with you huh? Of course not.
    Death had come from the beginning of the written tradition and the white people suppose that tradition is more important than the oral tradition of story telling but let's be honest just because you can read it doesn't make you the storyteller and if you're not the storyteller all you have is an opinion of what you think it means.
    So the white man came to conquer carrying his book he didn't know how to read and supposed in his hand it was a weapon not realizing he carried the testimony of his own guilt as he assumed the role of Cain who murdered his brother of the Earth and became cursed while it followed him like a ghost he didn't recognize. Even the wind whispered words that scared him, wave follows wave tribe follows tribe nation follows nation it's the order of Nature and regret is useless. Man didn't weave the web of life he's just a strand in it whatever he does to the web he does to himself. The white man cannot be exempt from the common destiny. We may be brothers after all we shall see.
    And I saw the white soldiers falling off their horses head first into the Indian camp like when a baby is born. You were cast down son of the morning star that's why our women poked your eardrums with a bone awl after you died, so you would hear better in the next world.
    Take a look around you there's nowhere for you to run. Defiant till the end destroying the web and can't see its destroying you back. The drum beat grows stronger and the ancestors voices are singing in unison, we won't let you destroy the Earth it doesnt belong to you.....

Under Ottoman rule (400 years) it was called Palastine. That’s what counts. Now you know that from 637 to 1940 with a short break of the crusades palastine was in muslim hands. Dunno what you don’t understand. Break up the numbers and see how many years arabs lived there.

    We need a TRUE comprehensive non-Whyte history to be taught in American schools. More in-depth Black history, including CRT (which ofc the bigoted Right is enjoying making into their latest football rn) but also a FULL history of all Native cultures here in North America. I remember a fair bit of detail being taught in my history class about the Spanish conquest of South and Central America but interestingly enough not nearly enough about the European takeover of the US and Canadian regions.

    I was aware that plantation economics and the plantation system began in Ireland and was a continuation of the Anglo-Saxon (German) invasion that would have such dreaded consequences for the planet. That head hunting began there is news but not surprising. You have to go deep into European history to see that violence and killing was the only constant resulting in two world wars. My question is why have the Irish (Scots and Irish Catholics) so thoroughly identified with the oppressors instead of seeking common cause with the oppressed?

    • @EdWilde
      @EdWilde 7 лет назад

      Kamal Shariff ......a whole lot of Irish DO find common cause with the oppressed. History is full of Irish soldiers fighting alongside all kinds of peoples and races against the Colonial forces, be they British or French or Spanish.
      It may also be part of the reason the Irish are so welcoming of other races and people. They subconsciously identify with the plight of so many.
      Head hunting, scalping, suppression of language, suppression of religion, suppression of culture all began to be refined in Ireland.
      The Irish were enslaved alongside the African in the Caribbean and treated equally, if not more harshly, by all historic accounts.

    • @penyarol83
      @penyarol83 2 года назад

      Why do you say the Irish thoroughly identify with the oppressors rather than finding common cause with the oppressed? I think you’ll find the Irish rebel spirit popping up in many places if you pay attention. Irish sentiment, from regular citizens to government, tends to side with the Palestinians e.g. Also look up the St. Patrick Battalion in Mexico. But I think it’s hard for cultures to resist becoming colonized under the brute force of such a powerful entity oppressing them. I agree that they, as well as the whole world now, need to find their way back to their wild & free roots. We all need to get back to our indigeneity, just for some it’s more deeply buried under layers & layers of colonization/civilization than for others.

      As I see it, civilization and agriculture are/represent the problem; the more civilized a culture, the more toxic, hierarchical, slavery-based & warlike it is (and unsustainable). Basically civilization is like societal cancer in many respects. See Peter Grey’s article in Psychology a Today: “How Hunter-Gatherers Maintained Their Egalitarian Ways”

      Kyle Prosper actually most people could care less. He was English and at that time the English controlled everyone. His only real claim to fame was that he was connected to the rich and the Crown. He didn't actually do anything remarkable that couldn't have been done by anyone else.
      Having said that I have a huge problem with tearing down statues just to be politically correct. In the early period of contact this area was governed by the Peace and Friendship Treaty and of all treaties this was the best and beneficial to all. I'm not going to allow people to generalize about the history of any area especially because Canada didn't have the same history as the US. Russell Means and other native activists and historians are probably correct that the reason for the American Revolution was the Royal Proclamation of 1763 which is still the basis of many treaties being renegotiated today.
