I have the seven inch vinyl sleeve of Nikita signed by Fred Mandel (synthesizers), Dave Mattacks (drummer) and David Paton (fretless bass). I have always loved ❤️ 💙 the song. So that's why I got it signed! Fred Mandel plays the synthesizer part near the end I believe, I spoke to Fred, a very friendly guy and he told me a few things!

I'm portuguese, born in 78. In the 80's there was a time in my country where this videoclip would show a few times a week for a few weeks as a "filler", i guess, in between shows. So this clip is such a vivid part of my childwood, along the whole cold war context. I never liked elton john, but love this song! It was the first "grown up"music i learned in piano classes too.

Never thought I'd hear someone react to 'Nikita' - one of Elton's 80s ballads so often dismissed by curmudgeons. It's from the album 'Ice on Fire' - not perhaps the best album in the world but there are some good songs on there. Try 'This Town' - not a hit but a powerhouse of a song.
The girl playing Nikita is beautiful of course but I'm always surprised to see the male border guard in this - he had a big part as a baddie in my favourite James Bond film, 'The Living Daylights'. (For those who can't remember, he's the one who has the unfortunate experience on the dangling sack of opium, high above the Afghan desert.)
Do listen to the guitar on this track - not one of Elton's usual bandmates, that's the wonderful Nik Kershaw on electric guitar and backing vocals. (Plus, as you say, the unmistakable George Michael.) I point this out because no one ever listens to Nik and he was (and is) such a great musician, singer and songwriter. When I saw Elton at Wembley Arena, must have been touring this album, Nik was the warm-up performer and I was almost as excited to see him as I was to see Elton.
Unfamiliar with Nik Kershaw? Here are five:
    Wouldn't It Be Good
    The Riddle
    Human Racing
    You Might
    Nobody Knows
"Nobody knows what you do to me
    And nobody's past is history
But the thing they should know seems to be
That it's nobody's business at all"

Harry, I love watching your reactions and appreciate your insights and comments. I do have an issue with all the times you've reviewed original songs and are shocked that you thought some cover artist originated the song. It would be nice if you checked, before your reactions, who wrote the song and when it was first released. It really discredits the original artist when you say "I thought this was a Mariah Carey song....." (for example) instead of already knowing that it wasn't. Just some feedback on song origins, original artist, and songwriter. Thanks!

    • @HarriBestReactions

Well,i'll tell you exactly why i dont do that.
When i hear a song for the first time on the radio, car or anywhere,i am not hurrying to find out who wrote the song. Its the initial rush if i liked the song that i am more concerned about.
One of the best feelings i have is doing these songs and going into the unknown.I love finding out things on the spur of the moment and sharing it with you guys.I dont wanna research things before hand. Its too easy and defeats the purpose for me.
Now,this is my style. Some other reactors might prefer to research. It would be boring if we all had the same approach.
So thanks for the feedback and now you know my stance.✌🏾

The actress playing Nikita was the athlete throwing the hammer into the screen in Apple's Macintosh Superbowl commercial. Possibly the most famous commercial of the 1980's.
    Excerpt pulled from Wikipedia:
"Anya Major (born 1966) is an English athlete, actress, model and singer who starred in Apple Computer's "1984" commercial, and in 1985 appeared as "Nikita" in the video to Elton John's song of the same name."

You realise of course that Nikita is a MALE Russian name, so it's boy soldier Elton fancies in the song. Kruskhoff, Soviet leader in the 60's first name was Nikita. It was felt better for the public to have a female Nikita in the video, as it would appeal to a wider public. Elton John was the first major western artist to play a gig in Soviet Russia.

I like this song a lot, and always have. Having said that, it was released in 1985, about 7 years before Elton officially came out as a gay man, so the video at least is hilarious from that perspective. Yes and I am sure he thought twice before he cashed that check. There are many stars that would give anything to have a "slump" like that.
FYI, I was an Airforce SSGT in 1985 when this album was released. It was a tremendous success. We had no issue with the Russian people, just with their government. In WWII the Russians were our allies and with luck will be again. The Russian people are human and need no help from western artists to express their humanity. Tolstoy, Chekhov, Solzhenitsyn, Pushkin, and other Russian Authors have been used to express the human experience in most Western Universities. Take this as an American Cold War Veteran's statement on the Cold War and the humanity of the Russian people. The Russian people are rising to protest in the streets against Putin's war on Ukraine.
Feel free to express your opinion on 1980's music with the expectation of little push back. Blanket comments on the humanity of the Russians or the Cold War are bound to evoke responses.
